[Q] HD2 WinMo 6.5: All Certificates stopped working - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

From yesterday to today, all Certificates stopped working on my HTC HD2 running Windows Mobile 6.5 EnergyRom. I don't know what happened. If I start Opera Mobile 10, almost every page with SSL comes up with several warnings, that the Certificate may not be trusted or is not working correctly. I checked under System Settings - Certificates and they are still there. Uninstalled and reinstalled Opera Mobile 10, but still happening. Also reinstalled .NET Compact Framework 3.5, but nothing changed. Also, my time is correctly set up to the second. I synchronized it several times.
What may cause this problem? I never had it before. I was using EnergyROM For over 4 years now without any problems. Is it possible its a Windows Mobile 6.5 Virus, which somehow messes with my SSL connections? Somehow, I can't imagine that, because WinMo is so old and who would bother developing viruses for it..
Thanks for any help.

I just checked, and I do not have the problem if I use Opera 9.7. So maybe Opera Mobile 10 is broken. Unfortunately, reinstalling it doesn't help.

Probably certs expired with Opera 10 version you using. I would look for ninja ducks Opera 10 release for a test.

Mister B, it worked! Didn't expect such a good answer so fast.
After uninstalling the previous installation, however, I had to rename "Opera Mobile 10" Folder (with the old profile information) to "Opera Mobile 10_old" on my Storage Card. Only then the Certficate-Problem would disappear.
I will try re-importing some of my old profile information back to the Ninja installation. Nevertheless, this solved my biggest problem. Thanks a lot!
Here's what I did, for others experiencing the same problem:
1) Go to Application/Remove Programs
2) Remove Opera 10 Mobile
3) Restart Device
4) Rename or Delete "Opera Mobile 10" Folder in Program Files (either Storage Card or Main Memory)
5) Install Ninja Duck Opera 10
6) Restart Device
7) Certificate Problem gone.

Good good good, keep enjoying that WM6.5 & opera10 mr gromhelm

Bump for this topic, because the problem seems to be bigger than that.
It seems that email support is also broken in the past month. I tried it with wifi, with cell data, with gmail, with outlook, with yahoo. The email client simply stalls and it says it's unable
to retrieve emails. I also tried hard resetting, it didn't work either. I think it has to do with certificates gone bad. (Opera is irrelevant here). I think the device's certificates have somehow "expired"
Omega 30 ROM here, I will try it also with stock.
Any thoughts?

Sorry thecon, I don't use Email on my HD2. Only thing I can report here is that Certificates of my Opera installation still work. Still very happy with my HD2.

Email working for me on my HD2 WM rom in my signature
I use gmail mainly (daily) but hotmail also working fine .
I do get certificate expired message at times but you can dismiss that warning to continue, also should be able update certificates ...

no problem here with gmail

Hotmail/outlook for 6.1/6.5 uses 'older' SSL. This should only affect sending emails, but you should be able to receive. Gmail and others use a newer SSL certs or TLS or STARTTLS. Also Microsoft dropped SHA for the newer SHA2. So unless the 6.1/6.5 OS are rebuilt with any newer WEH builds, I would start to see a few more issues occur.
Poyensa: thanks for your latest build

HTC Hero trouble synchronizing with PC? Read this...

Hi Heroes
Did you ever have trouble syncing your Hero with your PC? No connection with HTC sync? Only usb connection and access to the SD card? Maybe you got no connection at all? HTC sync couldn't find the driver... Or you actually used to be able to sync, but you can't anymore?
Well, I know how annoying this can be There are a few things you might wanna try. They worked for me...
a) Get HTC sync and install the drivers.
Windows 7 users (like me) will get an additional challenge, but it is doable IF you read this this thread (entirely!)
Remember the HTC Hero sync tab in the notification area trick (mentioned by #19 Magnus in the above thread).
Also remember #7 Daniel Kruschinski comment on restarting the phone.
b) Now, why create my own topic if every answer can be found in this thread? Simple: I DON'T WANT TO RESTART MY PHONE EACH TIME I HAVE TO SYNC!
Question:
Sync works after phone restart (if drivers are installed properly), but stops working after a while... why?Answer:
Because the HTC sync app (called "PC synchronization" or similar) ON THE PHONE stopped working.Question:
Why did the application stop working?Answer:
Because a) it shut down on its own (bug or whatever), or because b) you killed it with a app like Advanced Task Killer (ATK) in order to try to free some memory because your phone was being sluggish...Question:
Why not simply restart that app by going to "Menu" - "Settings" - "Synchronization" - "Sync with PC", since this IS the app?Answer:
...because it doesn't work! You can restart the app after it died, and it will show on ATK, but the syncing WILL NOT work. Weird, but that's the way it is...Question:
So what do I do?Answer:
Don't kill it! Oh, and by the way, if you use ATK, unchecking HTC sync in the program WILL NOT BE GOOD ENOUGH!: ATK will still kill it (!).
You HAVE TO add it to the "Ignore List" in ATK in order to keep it running (long press on the app in the list, then choose "ignore"). Strange, but true... This only applies to HTC sync, as far as I can tell. Don't ask...
A few more things, while we're at it:
- If the events of the calendar OF THE PHONE don't transfer to your Outlook calendar or your Google calendar , read this thread to know why (jr2408 's post).
why, WHY did they do that? Why can't you merge the calendars? Why can't you change the event's calendars after having entered them? At least, the phone remembers your calendar event settings... Uff!
- Here are a few apps you might want to install. They are free, and they are really usefull:
Advanced Task Killer free:
Allows to free memory by shutting down unused background apps. Removes sluggishness - awesome! Remember to use the ignore list for apps like HTC sync and TouchFLO
Quick Uninstaller:
Makes uninstalling apps a one-click operation. Cool!
Y5 - Battery saver:
Fantastic! Turns off the phone's wifi when you're not close to your (or a chosen) Access point. Remembers location by GPS tracking and thus saves you A LOT of battery energy. Try it, really...
3G Watchdog:
Keeps you informed of your Data connection rate (on 3G network, not wifi) and warns you when you reach a certain value. Very useful for those who don't have free unlimited transfer...
aTrackDog:
Keeps your software updated, even if it doesn't come from Android Market.
ASTRO:
An explorer which lets you manage your files.
Barcode Scanner:
Obvious...
Shazam:
Recognizes songs by listening and finds info on the Web. Impressive!
Wifi Analyzer:
Helps you spot the most appropriate Access point if several are in the area...
Sky map:
Helps you identify stars in the sky. Powerful!
AND:
Robo Defense (addictive!); Mario Simulator (laughing guaranteed); OI Flashlight (a "where is the #@! keyhole"-killer); Metal detector (eat that, I-phone braggers!)
If you got cash, don't forget CoPilot for GPS navigation, which allows to DOWNLOAD entire maps and store them on your SD card.
Et voilà! Comments welcome, recommended apps, advices... You tell me!
Questions are welcome, but answers are even more. Share!
Very useful post
very nice thanks!!!!!
My Hero doesnt detect the HTC sync on my Vista. I have never been able to sync with PC. I dont want to sync with PC as sync everything with google. But I need to sync with HTC sync for ROM upgrade. I have tried everything. I tried disablling the antivirus and firewall, put the program on teh Firewall exception list but nothing happnes. says that phone cannot detect HTC sync on computer. I hav downloaded the latest HTC sync from the HTC site. Any suggestions?
Hi all,
This is a little hello from me to you all. Like you all I've had problems with HTC Sync, unable to connect my HTC Hero, which I've only had for three weeks, but it seemly like a long time due to the problems I've had with HTC Sync and time I spend getting it to work with Outlook...
Anyway, I've read a lot of information here and externally i.e. google.com searches. I'm glad to say I've managed to HTC Sync to work..
This is what I did....Oh! I have a Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit, I GUESS this might work with any other installation of Windows, but not sure about Windows 7. If this works, please post here so people have one place to go to find the answer.... cheers.... and good luck!
1) Downloaded Andriod SDK, this was to allow debug USB connection. You can find it here.. http://dl.google.com/android/android-sdk_r05-windows.zip
2) Downloaded HTC sync version 2.0.33 (http://www.htc.com/www/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=283&cat=3&dl_id=933)
3) As I use my Ipod to sync music, I found Apple also installed Mobile device software, I uninstalled this.
4) Reviewed all software that related to USB and mobile devices and there were a few.... including my trusty HTC Diamond..., UN-installed them all...
5) Rebooted my laptop.
6) Installed SDK to C:\ASDK, then set-up Environment Variable to point to ;C:\ASDK\android-sdk-windows\tools, this is thanks to someone who posted this information on the web...sorry I can't find the reference, but here is my Kudos to you!
I rebooted my laptop...
7) I then installaed HTC Sync, but prior to the install, I stopped Anti-virus software (AVG), disabled my firewall.
8) Did another reboot.
9) Once my laptop was up and running.. ensured my firewall was disabled and disabled AVG, connected my Hero (baby) noticed Windows installed the USB drivers
10) Once the installed was completed, HTC Sync, did not see the phone, now I was pretty pissed at this point, however I wasn't going to give...
11) Whilst my phone was still connected, I decided to power it off and left it off for about 20 seconds.
12) Powered my Hero back on... and then that was it.... Windows found the phone not just USB, HTC Sync, noticed the Hero was connected and started the installation of the drivers, this took a bit of time... do be cool and wait...
12) HTC Sycn, status, conected baby, yeah!....
I setup what I wanted to sych, Contacts, calendar etc. and clicked on sync on the PC....
And it was great seeing this happen....
I hope this bit of information help someONE or someTWO at least... I know how much time I spent on this and if I can help save someONE or TWO save sometime - WoW It make me feel goooood....
Please post if it helps or if it don't...
Cheers and good luck to all
Right click "START". i was having troubles for hours even after all this reading get fed up. Press right click to delete HTC SYNC seen "START" and it went str8 to installation. let tha root begin!!

I am trying to use your method... but I don't quite grasp the meaning of point 6 (sorry for being such a noob, but I am at point of tears as I bough the Hero a few days ago as my first smartphone and now everything that can go wrong during freeing it into better phone, is going just wrooong).
So were do I set this C:\ASDK\android-sdk-windows\tools at? my PC? My SD card? How exactly I do it?
Thanks people for all the post, really... just at the beginning is quite overwhelming
Agnes
Thanks for the post.
I have a question for you guys that it is bugging me... why do you need sync? i've never used it so i don't get its purpose.
Thanks!

To be honest I don't know, but apparently it's necessary for installing ROM (following the steps from THE guide). I want to make sure it's working so that I won't get stuck with this problem in the middle of ROMing...
but later today I found my software is not up to date, but for some reason my phone errors with the phone+red triangle screen on, so I cannot update, without it I cannot properly root (even though the Universal Androot says it's rooted), and can't do anything. I am stuck at the moment, and plan to visit some store that claims they can do it for me... I feel disappointed and angry.:crying:

Spyware, and how to figure out what installed it.

Ok, maybe I'm in the wrong place. But here goes.
My phone is trying to send text to paid numbers behind my back. I'm using prepaid so it doesn't work. I get a "You have insufficient funds to send this text" message daily, at random times.
I have no pirated apps. Everything on my phone came straight from the market. However, I've not installed a single one of the apps that was on the recent list all over tech sites.
I'm planning on reflashing with a different rom and changing all the passwords that were stored on my phone.
BUT.
Before I do this, I want to find out which app is causing this behavior. Any Ideas on how to find out what is sending random text from my phone (they don't show up in the messaging app)

Install a android antivirus and firewall like Lookout.
Sent from my GingerBread Eris using XDA App
lookout finds nothing. All the other AV software fails to install. "Unknown error -18"
i have plenty of free space.
viogrep,
I wrote a novel, but then thought I should just ask a few preliminary questions:
Q1) does the error message contain any useful "hints", such as the destination number ?
Q2) if you use a logcat - capturing app, does anything show up in the logcat right around the time the message is generated which might provide some further clues?
There's a lot of different techniques you can use, but they require a bit of effort - not only to perform, but to explain, too.
Q3) Are you willing to post up the output of the "ps" command to a pastebin?
Q4) What apps on your phone request "SEND_SMS" privileges? You can find out with
Code:
strings /data/system/packages.xml > /sdcard/strings-pkgs-xml.txt
and then poking through the "strings-pkgs-xml.txt" file. When you see (for instance)
name="android.permission.SEND_SMS"
the immediately prior package is what requested it. Either that or you can do something tricky like
Code:
strings /data/system/packages.xml | awk '/<package name/{pkg=$2;}; /_SMS/{print pkg, $2;}'
bftb0
1. No destination number in the error. Sorry.
2. Also, no clues in logcat from what I've seen.
3. PS > http://pastebin.com/iUAfP9Yb
4. Besides the default gapps, the only other app with SEND_SMS priv. is Koxx Pure Messenger. (Purchased from the market, Have had for awhile, the sms sending is new)
Going to try to call my provider and see if I can get the number that's been denied because of funds.
*edit* No luck with provider.
I'd really like to know whats doing it so I don't install the same app once I flash. Luckily I keep nothing important on my phone. Its gmail account is actually a duplicate with my original forwarding to it. I'm a tiny bit overprotective over my email(address). :x

I know that it isn't necessarily this simple, but if that really is the only other app besides the GAPPs with SMS priveledges, especially coupled with the knowledge that the SMS capability is new, I think you have your answer.
If you tried a new ROM and restored all but that one app, and the problem never happens again then you can be 95% sure. Only way to be 100% sure is that after a certain length of time without a problem (a week?) you reinstall Koxx and then if the problem starts happening again.
I looked through your "ps" listing.
Didn't see anything too obvious sticking out at me; there were a couple of non-market apps running though. I know that there is no theoretical reason why non-market apps would be malicious - on the other hand, I sort of wonder why they are not on the market... you know what I mean? What is stopping them? (In the case of Tubemate - which was actually kicked off of Google's market, my suspicions are even higher. I realize it was not kicked off because of malware; but still...)
These were the only processes that were either not on my phone, or I didn't really recognize.
Code:
com.dylan.tube = [Non-Market App] Tubemate
com.gau.golauncherex.notification = GO Launcher EX (READ SMS)
com.levelup.beautifulwidgets = Beautiful Widgets (LevelUp)?
com.revsodev.volumecontrol = [Non-Market App] Volume Control (Cyrket?)
com.swype.android.inputmethod = Swype?
com.tencent.research.drop = QQPlayer (no perms req'd?)
net.bajawa.battery = BattStatt (no perms req'd?)
org.sipdroid.sipua = Sipdroid VoIP + video
The Road Warrior has an idea which is sort of useful; but I'll modify it to use binary division.
Start with a freshly installed, clean ROM, and only install half of your apps. (I would put all of your most frequently used apps in the first half, and delay any non-market apps as long as possible). Here's how this goes:
- if the "half" you put on the phone is trouble-free (long enough to know the SMS popup thing is not going on), then, install half of the remaining apps, and wait again to see if there is a problem.
- if the "half" you put on the phone develops trouble, then you know that the problem app is in that group. Wipe the phone and re-install all prior "halves" (that caused no trouble), but split the current half (the group containing the suspect app) in half, and only install that. Proceed in this fashion until you are down to the app which causes the trouble.
If you have 128 apps on your phone, and you wait 1 day between installations, it will take 7 days to find the malicious app. (And if you don't get a failure within the first two days, your phone will have 3/4s of it's apps installed - that's not too bad).
The thing is though, even if you had an app compromise your phone, it might not be an "app" that is doing the dirty work any longer. For example, the most recently discovered malware ran rooting exploits against the device, and once successful, downloaded and installed "other stuff". That "other stuff" could be native binaries. So, examining permissions in the system manifest doesn't necessarily guarantee that you have exhaustively looked at your phone, or discovered all possible means of interacting with the SMS system.
It might be "just an app", though - and if it were me, the first ones that I would suspect are non-Market apps, or apps that *cough* got downloaded from "freeware" sites.
Thanks for the responses. I actually did a fresh flash last night. First thing I installed was tubemate (running through non market apps) and it did it. Ironically I added some money to my account to see if I could get the number it was trying to text. Apparently it still couldn't go through.

I'm always amazed when something I suggested actually works. LOL. It's just that I'm used to things being more complicated than I hope.
Glad you figured out the trouble!
Thanks bt and RW for the help.
As far as the gmail thing... I use a different gmail address on my phone with email forwarded (different pass)...
If it gets taken I just stop the forwarding and make a new one. Makes things a more simple. Sure, they can see past emails, but they cant request passes/info from other sites... (I also monitor the login IPs in gmail, religiously. Just a habbit.)

You're welcome. You could just change your password from the web if your phone gets stolen.
Especially since it's the gmail address you use on your phone that everything is sync'd to, not the one that's forwarding to it. So if you got another Android phone you'd lose all your contact info and bought and installed apps info, calendar and such. Unless you sync them manually which is so much harder in my experience.
Or you could use one of the many free apps out there that would let you remotely do many things to your phone. Turn the GPS on, triangulate your phone, make your phone scream, do a factory reset to erase everything...
Just a suggestion.

Absolute System Tools - Broken(ish) WiFi

So, this is one of those problems where I just can't figure it out. I used Absolute System Tools to change my ro.product.model to GT-I9100 and ro.product.brand to samsung so I could play Modern Combat 3 on CM7 3.5. The next day I tried logging into Feedly and my device wouldn't load my Google Reader info and I couldn't access any of the feeds. It synced some header information regarding my "Tech" feed, but no individual feeds loaded. My first attempt to fix the problem was to change my model back to Touchpad and brand to HP, but that didn't work.
I was curious if it was my internet in general, so I logged on Dolphin HD and I connected just fine, I was able to browse any site no problem (No, it wasn't cache). I then noticed that in the bottom right hand corner my WiFi network was reading at "0%" with none of the bars filled. So I reset my router and still couldn't get Feedly to work. I then tried going to the market to redownload Feedly and noticed that the Market wouldn't connect either. I also tested Facebook and it doesn't connect. I tried toggling the Adblocker in Absolute System Tools and that didn't fix the problem.
So the prognosis; I can connect to WiFi, but applications such as Facebook, Feedly, and the Android Market won't recognize my connection. Browsers such as Dolphin HD and the default Android Browser will connect and so will Sync. My info from Absolute System Tools is set back to stock, but something isn't working properly concerning WiFi.
If anyone could post a backup of their build.prop, that might help (Although I haven't been able to properly load a backup save file from AST). I honestly don't know where the save file is, as I'm pretty new to AST, so a little info on that might be helpful.
I'm one step away from using Titanium Backup and formatting to a stock CM7 3.5, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

[Q] How to get rid of - adsmatte.com Adware

Hi,
Few days back, I start experiencing some Adware issues in my windows machine and windows phone. I have a blog which server Google Ads. Now, If I load my blog or any blogpost and then starts click randomly anywhere, it open a popup to ad.adsmatte.com/rot.aspx?and_some_parameters. I noticed that, I can experience the same problem in any website that servers Google Ads. I suspect this to be an Adware. But, I'm not sure how this creeps into my machine as well as in my windows phone. All the software that I use are genuine and no pirated copies are there in my machine.
But, the most surprising this I noticed is, my Windows Phone is also affected by the same problem. Since, IE in Windows Phone don't allow extensions and has proper sandboxing architecture, then how come IE in windows phone could be affected? I tried resetting my browser in both desktop as well as mobile, but didn't helped at all. Also, I launched the browser in InPrivate mode, which has the same problem too. . I even tried loading the same in FireFox (with AdBlock installed), but has the same problem.
I searched the internet for a solution and came across these 2 links - http://forums.androidcentral.com/moto-g-2014/528571-adware-redirects-most-websites.html, http://www.asus.com/zentalk/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=8189. And, I'm surprised by the timing of these issue. Is this a new Adware out-break? Is spreads to all machines connected in the same router, if I got it right.
Is there any fix? How can I get rid of this?
All machines connected to my wifi have gotten Infected with this admatte.com . Condition of my phone is worse , I cannot open any site from any browser as I get instantly directed to this site. It does look like an outbreak , because it has been reported on internet since yesterday only and no solution is working. No anti virus is able to detect this adware. So we really need help.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks.
Ad-matte
I am facing the same issue. It infected my PC, iphone and my android. I tried malwarebytes with no luck. The attack is so bad that I am unable to open any article in NDTV app. Did anyone find a solution?
adsmatte
All this started just a few days ago. And yes it infects all the devices connected to the same router. What i observed was if you just try the link ad.adsmatte.com it redirects to google ad services, i dont know what to make out of it though. I have been using adguard extension in chrome and havent faced the problem since the installation. I would recommen you guys to do the same.
enjoy this

best solution worked for me
Got this virus on Firefox days ago, I had tried many means to delete it but did not help. I followed the guides here
removebrowserhijacker.com/remove-ads-by-ad-adsmatte-com-pop-up-how-to-get-rid-of-ad-adsmatte-com-adware
, reset browser setting and remove add-ons, then restart. It did help something.
For Chrome go to Settings--> Advanced --> Do not Track
Start the Do not Track option. This works for chrome browser in android mobile phones
ad.adsmatte prob solved..
I have been searching the prob all over the internet but at last my own intellect got me the solution... Its simple solution for android phones ..just go to wifi menu.. Long press ur wifi id and select modify settings.. In there change DHCP to static Ip and fill in the details as per shown there already.. In DNS type 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and save it.. Its done..No more rubbish admatte ...Such a headache i ve been through for a month
wat prashu posted sounds dandy except that I WI settings on my android - but Save button I not highlighted, and no use anyway
practically, my internet on hone is disabled because of the redirector.
If anyone is having any problems with the advertisement.just move to the router settings and head off to LAN and unselected dns automatically.. Select the dns manually and enter Primary dns- 8.8.8.8 Secondary dns- 8.8.4.4

Lastpass Cannot Login

I have tested both 64 and 32 bit versions of RemixOS 3.0.206 and 3.0.207 and Lastpass consistently fails to sign in. It will start the app, but the moment credentials are entered, it simply closes. I thought it might have to do with 2FA being enabled, but tested with it disabled and no luck.
I've searched Lastpass' forums and these forums with virtually no results. Has anybody run into this issue? Any thoughts? Without it, I'm pretty much dead in the water.
Yep, same here. What I'm doing as a workaround is copying the username & password from LastPass on my phone, Join automatically shares my clipboard and I paste them into the app / website in Remix OS.
Hmm, interesting idea... I wouldn't consider it except for the E2E encryption offered through Join. Thanks buddy!
I just hope a full solution gets released soon...
I was loving Remix OS until I tried to use LastPass and came across the same issue. Will use Join as an interim workaround. Thanks!

I see this is an old thread, but thought this might be of value. New to REMIX. Installed it to a flash drive and booting off that to a Dell Laptop. Have a Lastpass icon on Desktop and when I click on it, it also opens for a few seconds then closes. I have the Lastpass Chrome extension. Its icon appears on the NEW TAB of Chrome. Click on it, and Lastpass login presents. I can log into Lastpass there and then see my vault. I leave that tab open and launch a website from it. That opens a new tab to that login page, but nothing fills and I see no way to command a fill. Seems like it wants to work ... comes close, no cigar on this toss.
