First of all apologies if I am listing this new thread in the wrong place, I am fairly new to the forum!
Secondly, I have read that many people do not much like the Chinese phones, but I was looking for a decent spec, cheap phone for my 13 year old son, so that I would not care too much when he stands on it while playing sports at school, or it get 'misplaced'/lost/stolen by some other 13 year old, or if he simply abuses it to hell and so this iBOLD X-U 4.7" (1280x720) quad core phone just fitted the bill.
So I bought one and out of the box it looks and operates as expected, other than... the dreaded Chinese apps! Most of the apps are English/in English, but it has some in Chinese, one of which I believe is something to do with the rooting of the phone (does "com.mgyun.shua.su" mean anything to anyone?). I am also unable to find a custom ROM for it, or any instructions on how to get round to do this...
The main question is, how do I get to a UK/English only ROM/Software/Setup/Menus & Messages for this phone please, to at least get to Google store only apps? Am I asking too much and is this possible (on a Chinese phone) please? If I can flash it up from the 4.2.2 version it reports to be loaded with, to something like KitKat it would be brilliant!
Apologies for the relative inexperience, I do build normal PC's and write some code, just never not got round to changing anything on an Android phone (or worked with Linux type software!) as yet, so any help/advice welcome!

Assuming you are rooted and have a custom recovery, otherwise this is not possible via recovery.
If that's the case, extract your zip and make sure you install the proper DPI, all that is done automatically if you can flash a zip.

i know i know, any hi! i'm new thread deserves beatings, and whilst i'm fully aware i'm tempting the wrath of you all by doing this....... but i don't know where else to look.
i got a htc hero 24hrs ago on orange (uk). upgrade from a sony k850i so i have never had a smartphone before. i have no idea what i'm doing with it.
i've looked but not found a RTFM page yet, or i am that retarded that i can't even find it. what i can find contradicts what i've previously read so i though i'd ask you lot....
anyway - grovelling apologies aside:
1) rooting - is there one simple way to do this, so far i have found 4 processes and don't know which ones to trust.
2) ROM's - finally found out how to get software for the phone-(shouldn't there have been a disk with the phone?) and have installed active sync. i have just downloaded:
RUU_Herrange_UK_2.73.61.5_release_signed_NoDriver
is that the best/most recent ROM? if not, what is?
i guess i dont know enough about the phone to know the differences and therefore where to start. does rooting your phone allow you to get access to other apps like cydia and icy for the iphone do for example? whats the point, apart from to enable read/write access on the SD card (whats the biggest SD Card a Hero will take by the way?)
3) radios? what difference does it make if i'm listening to queen or queens of the stone age lol. seriously, whats the score here and where do i look for noob info?
help me. people with iphones are telling me i did a bad thing getting a hero. make me wise in the ways of the droid.

I am no expert as I have only had my Hero a week and have come from winmo. But I have rooted my phone and installed a rom and it was dead easy.
1. Follow this video - http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/27/how-to-root-your-htc-hero-in-one-click/ where he says to unzip or extract the cm-hero-recovery.img file all he means is find it on your pc and just copy that file to the SDCard.
I would also recommend doing a backup after rooting your phone from that video. To do this turn ur phone off, then hold the home and power button together and that will get you into the recovery area, then just select the nandroid backup option.
2. I have used the Modaco rom and have had no problems at all with it, not sure if its better than the orange one though sorry.
3. When people talk about the radio file for the Hero they are talking about a file that enables the phone to recieve the mobile phone signal, it also enables the phone to recieve a wi fi signal etc. I even think it does GPS, basically these can be tweaked to get better reception, thus you can update them. I really hope that made sense lol and hope you get what i mean.

is there a list of available ROM's for the hero anywhere and a list of what they do? ie benefits rather than a bunch of files names that have tweeked - they make no sence to me.
i dont know how you'd weigh one ROM up against another, to me it's like comparing chinese and japanese when you speak neither !
also is there an alternative marketplace, i know apple iphone has icy and cydia. i dont want warez just wondering if there's an alt. community as apple have out there (i'm thinking you guys are 'it' lol)
Don't think there is a list of ROM's as tbh the only good one around is the Modaco one. There is an Orange one out but I think people still rate the Modaco one as better, but I could be wrong in that. If you go for the Modaco one though you won't regret it.
As far as I know there is no other marketplace.
If you get into any problems in rooting and putting a ROM on ur Hero just pm me.
Sharp has made a pretty nice Keitai-style Android phone: sh7218u , but has crippled the OS only to run chinese apps. (They call it DimSim)
What would be the best way on approaching a potential "uncrippling" of this software.. and installing a full blown Andorid on it ?
All suggestions welcome, (I don't wanna hear any "buy a HTC instead" replys) 'cause they don't make clamshell androids)

Now, I don't really know how to read Chinese well so Ive gotten all this info from lurking Chinese forums searching for keywords or just finding these because of others. So, if anyone can help me out with translating this link I'm about to give, ALOT of helpful things will result since it's basically a thread on SH7218U optimization.

Also, if you check out this vid, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmTf300BhpI ,this guys SH7218U is modded so the notification and virtual android buttons have a different look to them. I asked the guy and this is what he said, "It is similar to how to modify the status bar is other android phone (which you can search from google or XDA forum), but the tricky part is instead of modify the frame-res.apk. you do the modification on dianxinos-res.apk". Now that seems simple enough but I can't find any guide on HOW to do this, and him not replying any further didn't help me out.. SO yeh, if anyone can read/write Chinese lets look up on how to mess with the SH7218Us framework.apk and dianxinos-res.apk, as for now Ide rather not mess with those important files without a clear English guide.
So let's try and get something going here possibly maybe perhaps?

Re-root with IOROOT after reset (STUMP, IOROOT, BUMP, TRWP)

Rooted with STUMP initially just fine. Then had to factory reset due to a malfunctioning app.
Stump does not (yet) support re-root after reset unless you flash back to stock.

I am the noobest noob around when it comes to android based phones (hoping to climb the mountain of knowledge to start developing during this winter if I have the time!).
The first thing I want to say is a clear "thank you" to those of you who are sharing knowledge - all searches "root my G3" led here to this site and it appears that there are some very talented people here - I am here to learn, experiment and share... Right now I am very much in the learning mode with regards to these topics.
So...I just got this LG G3 (Verizon)/VS985. I've had it for 3 days and I am really not a fan of all this bloatware they put on it. I just want it off.
Apparently, removing all these Amazon, football, etc. apps can only be done by rooting the phone.
Now here are the questions:
1. There seem to be many ways now (at least 3, maybe 4) to root these phones. Which is the best? Does it matter?
1(a). Someone mentioned that "they" (not sure if its verizon or LG) might discover the "exploit" that (I assumed) was used to root their phones and then change it - would this affect any phones that have been rooted previously or just phones that would be rooted using that specific exploit?
2. Assuming I am able to successfully root this phone, at that time can I remove the apps I do not want on the phone with the current apps or do I need new apps to accomplish this?
3. Will most play store apps work properly on rooted phones?
4. I do not understand nearly any technical jargon with these unit as of yet. I see people are maybe changing the bios (?) of the unit and software of the unit? Is this correct? If so, where does one obtain different bios or software?
5. This may sound petty, but I dislike the circular shape of "folders" when you combine apps together on this phone - and I wondered - is there a way to change this style to a traditional rectangular file folder or make other cosmetic changes to this phone so it is completely customized? For example, what if I want a small element that shows the weather using the national weather service website instead of what was built in? Do I have to figure out how to produce that or are there already such things out there?
6. I continually note the warnings that are stated when websites give links to root phones - are the risks overplayed or are there really some issues with this (other than "voiding the warranty")?
7. Once I root my phone, can I remove the bloatware and then go on using the phone and useful apps essentially as it was previously?
8. This is a bit off topic, but assuming I have some basic computing and electronic skills, is it possible to learn enough about the foundations of how these units work at the code level and produce an "app" that does specific tasks of which current apps do not within a few months perhaps?

You're in the same ballpark as me! I just bought my Lg G3 from Verizon yesterday as well, however I'm going to wait a little while to root it. I'm running Nova Launcher and just made all of those apps hidden. But let me answer some of your questions from my past root experience!
1. As for ROMS, I would stick to the Verizon section for now, but that's just me. You can try the other 'variants,' but that's up to you if you want to get your feet wet over there. It won't ruin your phone, just some of the things won't work (probably, I don't know). Looks like Jasmine is your best bet so far, and there's another one MIUI that is pretty popular, but that's your selection as of right now and people seem to be enjoying them the best!
2. Absolutely . If you can't delete them manually, you can download Titanium Backup (what I use) to delete those horrible Verizon apps and Amazon, etc. Now, these will be deleted from your phone for good until you unroot your phone and reflash the official, orginal firmware provided here on xda.
3. All Play Store apps should work. Well...MOST should work. I've been rooting for over 2 years and I've never had an app say, "nope! too bad, so sad." So you should be good Download away.
4. These are new concepts for me too...I would just do some homework. Like every flasher out there would say, "Read read read! Oh. And READ BEFORE ROOTING!"
5. I would assume this is just based on the Launcher that you're using. You can use the stock software which is pretty nice, actually, but I prefer Nova launcher in my personal liking. There's also GEL that is pretty and fluent. In the settings of these apps, you can (usually) change the folder icons.
6. If you have a warrenty, yes, it's "Voided," unless you unroot . Make sure you read up on that, but there is nothing wrong with it. I've had Verizon reps actually tell me that what I did was a good thing, haha. But if you plan on returning the phone, make sure you unroot it and discard of any "suspicions!" Again, just do your reading about root/unroot and you should be solid. :good:
7. Yes.
8. Just read the general LG g3 forums of rooting, unrooting, bumping (this is new), and read what others are saying about the ROM to see what kind of issues there may or may not be with it. And have fun! Also, once you get the hang of rooting, it will be easy as pie. If it's something new, there's a ton of information out there already with our phone where you can fix it! There's a unbrick solution on here, too, just not sure where in the threads.

I have rooted my lg g3 d855 eur e10 few days ago. Now my play-store keeps saying that i don't have working network connections with 3g and wifi. I factory reseted it today and now i can't log in to my google play account. It says " Can't establish a reliable connection to server. This could be temporary problem or your android device may not be provisisioned for data services".

I just got my LG g3, from Verizon since it's new it's automatically updated to 12b is there a way to root, unlocked and install recovery and everything. I just came to LG from my s3 which was locked out (thanks knox) so I'm out of the flashing loop so any and all help is appreciated

First off, let me start off by saying that I am a complete android noob when it comes to messing around with rooting and flashing. So pardon if some of the things I say come across as foolish.:angel:
My girlfriend bought me what she thought was an original iphone 5s on her recent trip to China where she was teaching English. Little did she know that she got fooled into buying what I now found out is a Goophone i5s MF353zp/a. Since I want to keep the phone since she did get it for me as a nice gesture, I am trying to get it to run a regular android 4.2.2 jelly bean or better, without all the iphone icons and iphone crap. Also the phone did not come with play store so I cannot download apps that I would use on a regular basis. :crying:Also most of the stuff is in Chinese and I just want to be able to use it as a regular android phone. I read up on roms, and rooting and flashing, but if someone could tell me the best way to go about getting a regular android version on the phone along with google play store, It would be much appreciated. If I'm not mistaken, the processor is a MT6572.

So, I have a Toshiba AT200 tablet that uses android 4.0.3 and I'm disabled currently jumping through all the hoops for SSI. In the meantime I been using the usertesting app to make enough money to cover my rent & internet barely. Trouble is, they just discontinued support for android versions older than 5.0 so I need to upgrade it to android 5 or 6. Since I have no real clue how to do much of anything on android other than install and run stuff from the play store, I called Toshiba for help and was told that they don't offer a manufacturer update to higher android versions but that I could easily google an unofficial one that is completely legal.
Well, after the last 5 hours of trying, 3 system crashes, 21 removals of trojans by windows defender and malwarebytes, and I-have-no-idea how many 'surveys' & 'offers' completions trying to unlock downloads; I STILL don't have a working upgrade.
PLEASE help me! I need this done to continue earning enough money to pay my rent & internet.

that's a copy that I posted two weeks ago in the assist forums and never got a response till today telling me to put it here. I've done more searching since first posting, but still haven't found anything working (and ended up with some gomail.ru hijacker thing which I've tried repeatedly to remove but can't seem to fully get rid of it) so please help ASAP! two weeks is way too long to not make any income... I'm prolly gonna be late for internet this month.

Why won't anyone help me? Is it unclear what device it is? AT200 is what it lists in the 'about' section in the tablet settings menu, but what it shows up as when I put the serial number into the Toshiba website is Excite AT205-T16I

What? I'm sorry but I don't understand what you tried to say. The Toshiba rep told me to google 'toshiba at200 custom rom lollipop' though I really don't know what that means... and I've tried multiple times but always end up with either a bunch of malware to get rid of or one of those 'complete survey or offer to unlock download' things which never work. I found a site with pretty understandable instructions on how to complete the upgrade and got some kinda rooting tool, but it doesn't help me without having this 'apk rom' that it talks about and doesn't give any links on the instruction page.
Regrettably, there aren't any options to update your device. There are 2 ways to upgrade, either via updates put out by the manufacturer, or via a custom version of android (referred to as a "rom") that is compiled from a source code such as the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) or CyanogenMod (CM). For devices that didn't sell well or weren't of significant interest to the developer community, custom updates aren't usually an option as it takes a considerable amount of time and skill to update a device beyond what the manufacturer puts out due to differences in the system as well as drivers on newer versions of android.
