Hi guys,
Wanted to know if there any apps or workarounds which switch off data automatically. I know there are apps which turn off data when the screen is locked and such, but what I need is something more specific. I read quite a few "articles" and news snippets which are fairly long, which might take around 2-3mins to completely read. Is there an app or a floating widget which can disable the data during this period and enable it back when required? I am fine with some sort of "floating" button which hovers over and I can manually disable the data.
Thanks!

So, I have noticed that when I use widgetsoid to enable/disable data connection (have to do that when using Market due to the market trying to use data instead of WiFi), it works to disable the data connection. Then if I leave it and let's say next day at work enable it, the indicator turns green again but the "arrows" for H+ never show up.
The only way then is for me to restart the phone.
Any ideas, maybe some widgetsoid settings I need to change to make this work properly?
data connection
There are a few threads on this. Data connection can be BROKEN by using some of the power widgets. That is what happened to me anyway. i had to reset the phone to get my data working again and now i only use the built in power widgets which are ugly but work fine. If you uninstall the power widget and everything works again you may want to consider leaving it that way.
people who have "Widgetsoid alternative icons", and can share the apk? thanks
hi there
i wanted to know what is the real reason for we have to use an app such as clocksync (great by the way).
for instance, my old 10 years nokia doesn't need "resync" and keeps the right timing while my smartphone now needs to have the time corrected otherwise it will drift away plenty of minutes.
and also, in order to sync with clock sync, i need a data connection, but if i travel overseas and i keep my data roaming disabled, i will never be able to do that, correct?
thanks
gabrio
Who says you have to use the app? I use it mainly on my touchpad because the clock gets reset sometimes and the market doesn't work because of it, unless this happens on your phone you don't need to use it. Yes you need a data connection for it, or wifi.
It is hardly ever really out on time but I like to be precise so even since the days of WM have used applications similar to clock sync and clock sync therefore is essential to me...
Sent from the valley of the shadows....
I'm ClockSync developer, your question is answered in the application FAQ:
Q: Why would I need ClockSync, Android already has Automatic setting for Date & time?
Not all the mobile operators support automatic time synchronization mechanism called Network Identity and Time Zone (NITZ), therefore this setting may have no effect at all. Even if your provider supports NITZ, the information it sends may be inaccurate. There are also devices without SIM card, especially tablets that have no access to the network time. If Android Automatic mode works fine for you, then you are lucky and probably don't need ClockSync, otherwise it's recommended to disable it to avoid conflicts and getting incorrect time, see also a question about wrong time after synchronization below.
Hey guys! I recently purchased my galaxy from Telus and I must say it's a lovely device. Just a few cons for me is that it's a bit big and the volume rocker button is pretty loose. Other than that everything is just perfect
I just have a few questions if people could take their spare time to help out
1) How do you disable data usage? I tried pulling down the notification bar but there is no data off/on switch, only wifi.
2) If say I have data and wifi simultaneity on, what will exactly happen? Will wifi take over and automatically shut off the data?
3) Is there a way to automatically stop the use of data by having a restriction set up so for example once I hit 980mb, I won't be able to use the data unless I override and make it possible to continue using it. (Is watchdog a perfect app for this?)
4) The wifi/data icon on the status bar, what does the orange arrow going down mean and the other arrow facing up? The arrow facing downwards for my wifi keeps blinking orange/hang and goes back to grey. (Does it mean there something downloading in the background?)
5) What are some ways to improve the battery life of the phone?
6) Is there a way to remove "ME" on the contact list?
7) When I charge the phone through my laptop, it doesn't heat up but through the wall, the charging brick is rather hot. Is this safe?
8) To open the back cover, do you just put your nail/finger tip through the back hole and just use brute force to rip it off or is there something else? I feel like I'm gonna break the cover or the little edge/dimples on the sides of the cover where it fits into the back :l
9) Is there any way to change the brightness through maybe the status bar (moving fingers from right to left increases brightness and vise versa for left to right?) or maybe through notification bar?
10) Also should I have the sync icon on at all times in the notification bar?
11) Also is samsung kies needed? Whats the benefit of having it?
12) I really appreciate the help guys, and last not but least, what are some useful/"needed/essential" apps to help or make life easier for the phone?
This is my first smartphone as I've been using my old lg chocolate for some time now and it just incredible how diverse the android os is but at the same time confusing and stressful to add what and such. I have so many things I want to do with the phone atm but stressful to figure out what to do in order lol.
I'm planning on rooting the phone after I save the contacts to my google.
Thanks everyone!

Make sure you read what I wrote at the bottom too...
1) Disable by going into settings>mobile networks>data enabled (check or uncheck)
2) Disable data usage for a set limit under settings>more>set data limit. This will turn off mobile data when the limit you set is reached.
3) Answered in 2.
4) Wifi turned on and connected means your data is only going across wifi network, cell data no being used.
5) Improved battery life is really achieved through a new rom and kernel. Anything else is really a gimmick, except screen brightness.
6) Not that I'm aware of.
7) The wall charger charges at a higher rate/higher rating so that will always make sense. It's fine.
8) Yes
9) Not on stock unless you have a custom theme or locker app. Just root and use a different rom (Task650's is always the best IMO).
10) You probably have a sync error. Go to settings>Accounts and Sync and look through your account to see what is going on. THere may be one item checked that needs to be unchecked and rechecked.
11) Kies will install the proper drivers but depending on what you need now, it's not really a necessity. More info.
12) Swype Beta
YOU ARE REALLY NEW TO ALL THIS SO MY RECOMMENDATION IS TO READ FOR A MONTH BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO ROOT ANYTHING. THE QUESTIONS YOU HAVE ASKED ARE SO BASIC I'M WORRIED YOU'RE REALLY GOING TO BRICK YOUR DEVICE. YOU NEED TO SPEND A LOT MORE TIME READING. USE THE SEARCH BUTTON... ALL THE ANSWERS I GAVE YOU ARE EXPLAINED BUT YOU HAVE TO READ AND FIND THEM. These guys will chew you up Noob if you're not careful. Read read read.
With time you'll get to root and flash all day, but until you have the basics down, spend your time on here reading. That's what I did and ever day I learn something new.

Well for better battery life try turning off the motion activated actions within the settings. I found that I can easily add about another hour of total usage once disabling these. Turn off smart stay as well. Also if your going to use google chrome, going into the settings and turn off enable tilt scrolling
Let me know when I am at the wrong spot here, but since I'm a very happy user of FroyoPro, and believe the experts are here, so I thought to ask my question here. (if inappropriate I'll remove it)
Usually I have my mobile network settings set for lowest power usage. So no data, no 3g etc.
For the spare moments I need internet or navigation, I turn those on, but it takes quite some steps to do that, and the same amount of steps to turn them off again.
Is there an option to create and select profiles for such?
I searched but can't find something like this?

Search in Play Store for a data toggle, there are plenty out there that are widgets you just drop on home screen and your golden.
Hello
I'm sorry to ask all those questions in a single post, but I would otherwise have had to post in several forums. I'll be grateful if you can answer even some of those questions.
I'm very happy with my Samsung Google Nexus, but there are things I need:
1. Ad blocker: For web browsing, I generally use Dolphin, and use Chrome when I need to start an incognito tab. Are there ad blockers for those browsers to avoid those heavy web pages?
2. Since 3G uses more battery, is there a way to tell Android to switch back to 2G automatically after Xmn of no web browsing (2G seems good enough for the few times I use GPS)?
3. I'd like to have the following shortcuts on the screen:
- Switch to 3G or 2G
- Enable/disable Airplane mode
- Enable/disable wifi
I currently use the "2G-3G OnOff" application, but as the name implies, it only handles the first item.
4. Is it possible to change my MAC address as a work-around to those pesty public access points that limit users to 20mn? There are several utilies for Windows that do this, but is there one for Android?
5. Is there a way to tell Android to go through a proxy when browsing in 3G? The Proxy Settings application only works for wifi
6. Is there a way for the phone to vibrate when receiving text messages?
7. Can the ring volume rise or go down depending on the surrounding noise? When on the street, I often miss calls because I can't hear the phone even with its volume pumped up to the maximum... which I must remember to lower back to a reasonable level when going back inside.
8. When using my phone as a GPS receiver while biking around on week-ends, I'd like to switch off data mode to save battery: Does GPS require a data connection, or can it work offline?
9. I generally find Android's default calendar nice to use, but there are a couple of things that bother me:
- it can't be squeezed vertically, wasting a lot of screen real estate, and making it possible to see appointments below a certain hour: Is there a way to squeeze/inflate the calendar through multi-touching? Here's a screenshot.
- it always displays a "Attending?" question, even though I don't use a shared calendar (I do attend my own appointments): Can this section be removed? Here's a screenshot.
Thanks for any help.
