Hi folks, can anyone point me in the right direction for a stock uk o2 rom?
I have been asked to look at my brother in law's S740 but am beginning to think something is corrupt. I have a thread in the general section if anyone wants a look.
If one is not available, is there a generic english ROM around?
Many thanks.
EDIT: I did find on, linked to from this board but unavailable. I found the same file elsewhere, but it told me it was the wrong one when I tried to flash it.
Hey,
Odd it won't install if you really have an Orange. I tried it on my 'Asia' S740 and it gave me the same error but now that HardSPL is available thanks to jocky2001 I was able to install the Orange S740 rom! I thought update had failed because it stuck at a generic 'Operator' boot screen FOREVER but eventually it did finish booting & initial setup. Bad news is that although the rom seems to work I can't get a signal. Perhaps the radio has been highly customized for Orange, not sure. The odd thing is everywhere I've looked says the Orange S740 is Quad band & even shows 850/1900 on spec pages but those are not even options in band selector.. Anyhow, if you want to give the Orange ROM a shot, try jocky2001's hardspl (worked for me) and maybe you'll at least get it installed.
Bill
Thanks Bill.
To be honest, I don't know what operator it was on before I was asked to look at it, as it was found discarded in the box with all the bits - in a bin!!!
Maybe thats why.
Are the orange ones branded as such? This has no branding apart from the HTC emblem.
Wow lucky you! Hey I think I lost my S740 near that bin.. You might install jocky2001's hardspl then at least try the Orange UK & Asia ROM's. Both roms refused to install on my S740 (HTC told me it originated in Singapore but even Asia ROM refused to intall) but after hardspl I can install either rom.
As far as branding, I've not seen an Orange S740 & the Orange site shows no logos or such but I will tell you the Orange logos display on bootup after installing the Orange ROM vs just HTC logos with the Asia ROM. They do seem to have different apps installed by default but didn't dig too deep to determine which. Pretty sure the Asia ROM auto-configured data settings for me but the Orange one required connection wizard cab although it didn't help much without a signal.
Btw mine says ROSE100 FCC ID:NM8RSV P/N: 99HFB012-00 behind battery if that helps
So does yours even boot or stuck at bootloader or what does it do to make you think the flashed rom is corrupt? Did you try a hard reset to clear settings? Often that works if someone did/installed something that mucked it up.
Bill
Ps. Here is the link to the ROM's I used. The Asia rom has English (is default actually) & seems to be true Quad band enabled vs the Orange which seems to be just dual band since it doesn't show 850 band & although 1900 is listed it won't connect to it for me even though I know AT&T has 850 & 1900 in my area: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=599520
EDIT: OK seems it does support 1900 but only if you manually select 1900 from band list. I tested with both TMobile & ATT SIM's and get a signal. The ATT signal is weaker than normal though because normally the 850 band is a lot stronger in my area than 1900. Field test confirms it's running on PCS/1900 band not 850. So far I found no way to get 850 to work but odds are there is a way since the radio supports it. (Works with Asia ROM on same phone)
It wasnt the ROM file that I thought was corrupt, it was more a case of trying to refresh / reload the various rom sections back onto the phone as there is nothing in the way of phone signal.
There is an image of the problem in this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=648169 - if you haven't already seen it.
I'll give it another go, but when I tried to flash an asia rom both before and after jocky's SPL it just throws up the "invalid vendor ID" error.
Yeah I assumed you meant the ROM on the phone was bad not the file.
No I hadn't looked at your other thread, I had just posted on this one because it was about the ROM. I get that symbol when I put in a bad/disabled SIM. I think it just means there's no service but emergency calls can still be made if there is a signal. The symbol is different if there is no SIM. Does it give you a 'locked' error indicating it's SIM locked to a carrier? Maybe the SIM slot is bad.. Or maybe the phone was reported stolen so the carrier is blocking it.. Have tried to run fieldtest.exe with a SIM in to see if it is indeed connected to a tower? Not sure what band it'd show for you but for me it is either 850 or PCS even if bad/disabled SIM is installed indicating it does have a signal for at least 911/emergency calls. Anyway, I'd hope you at least did a hard reset clear storage at least already & next do hardspl & install either original orange or Asia rom. I can confirm both posted on xda work on my S740 (aside from lack of 850 band on Orange rom) after installing the hardunlock where they did not work at all (same ID error) before the unlock..
Ok, here's the results of my testing, without having to install Jockey's SPL.
Both ROM's you refer to flashed ok. Obviously I didn't try to hard with the Orange ROM as I dont have an Orange sim to try.
I flashed the Asia ROM with success but still have the problem of no service.
HOWEVER, after having a play with the band and network selection settings, it now asks me to select a network, but the only one listed is T-Mobile.
Again, I only have an o2 sim to try as this is the preferred operator my bro wants.
This now leads me to believe that T-Mobile is the only one listed because it is locked to that carrier.
My assumption may be totally incorrect as my knowledge of phones is pretty much zero, but if this is the case, would you or anyone else know of a way to unlock it pretty much for free, lol, especially now the HardSPL is available.
Sorry, I meant to answer you other questions at the same time.
It could be the slot is bad, and I'm pretty sure it's not been blocked by the carrier as it was found by a cleaner working in an office.
In the bin were the box, phone, CD's, headphones and USB cable.
Even the little square pages of literature were there.
Its almost like it has stopped working and the owner has just taken his / sim out and binned it. !!
There hasnt been any locked error either.
I'll try that fieldtest next.
EDIT: I put the phone down for 10 minutes while typing this and getting fieldtest, only to pick the phone up and now have Orange on the "choose network" screen. I'm going to leave it overnight and see if it can get o2, lol.
Cool you got the roms to install but very strange it would let you without hardspl.. Btw, Orange ROM does not mean you have to use Orange SIM. Note that the Orange ROM has a newer radio which is worth a try too. For testing I'd leave the band stuff on auto unless you're sure you know what you're doing because it's easy to set it to wrong band & assume you get no signal. lol And I'm sure you want O2 but worth trying any valid SIM you can find just to see. But yeah the network select trick is helpful too just to see what is available but it can show different results depending on what SIM is in it, status of that SIM etc. If your phone was locked to a carrier it should tell you so when you 1st boot up with a SIM from a different carrier in it. And after searching I see nowhere that TMobile has ever had branded S740 so doubt seeing just TMobile in list is an indicator of being locked to Tmo.
Sounds like a SIM issue since it is doing the same as when I put a deactivated SIM in. I'd say either the SIM socket/contacts are bad, SIM isn't inserted properly, incompatible SIM (maybe they are super old?) or possibly the phone had damage to either antenna or water damage that ruined something. The more SIM's you try the better to narrow it down, especially if you were able to get your hands on an active Orange SIM.
Of course it's possible the phone's IMEI has been blacklisted as stolen & that is causing your phone to not be able to register on a network with SIM installed. From everything I've read when a phone is blacklisted it'll either say an error about not being able to register with network or simply show no signal as if a deactivated SIM was installed. I'd say if that is the case they'll come knocking on your door since they'll trace it back to your account. hehe US carriers don't seems to partake in the blacklist system so feel free to ship it to me & I'll test it here for you.
Well, just to close this thread.
I tried various ROM's available from this site and none worked.
I did have limited success as posted above but overall, nothing. The phone has now gone back to the person who asked me to look into it and to my knowledge he is going to sell it to one of these phone reclaim companies.
I did check and one place, I think throught the post office, is offering £80 ish so not bad I suppose.
Anyway, thank you to all who have made suggestions and wotnot. Personally I'm still happy with an old Nokia 6300 and my Wizard (Mini-S)
Thanks folks.
Ill be moving to japan by years end and was wondering what network could I use to work with the Atrix? And if anyone has any experiance living in japan, how does billing work?
From everything I've heard Japan has domestic market phones that make the Atrix look like old news. You might be better off getting a phone/plan locally when you get there.
...I beg to differ on that one.
Here in Japan, there are some good Android phones, but they're almost always locked down. For example my SH005. great phone except the battery won't last a whole day.
I picked up an Atrix I plan on unlocking and using that over here.
anything that has the 2100 band (pretty much all 3G phones in the US) will work on Softbank. if you're going there permanently, then if your phone is unlocked you can probably just drop the SIM in. if you're going temporarily then you will probably need to grab a prepaid SIM but it should still work in the phone. you pay for all minutes used, incoming calls are free, and softbank has a good deal on unlimited mail for prepaid (300 yen per month) plans.
shadowfalx had issues with softbank in JP.. he tried 2 Atrix handsets and couldn't get either of them to work with data..
It had to be his APN settings. I've used dozens of non-softbank phones over here, starting with my GSM WinMo Treo 750, and as long as the APN settings were correct, it worked on data fine. There's one other person with an Atrix I know here in Tokyo; He's a Google employee here. So I know it'll work.

Like what?
Japan is behind the times these days, still loving flip phones, blackberries and just joining the iphone love.
Symbian is alive and well in Japan. That should tell you everything.

Have you ever heard of people getting extremely high charges for data? I read about that on another forum (gaijinpot, search for "softbank bill" on the title, I can't link to it). They say softbank will usually not allow you to use a cell phone they didn't sell on their data network if you ask them directly. The thread is 3 or so moths old, I don't think too much has changed since then.
Again, it's all in the plan/APN settings you start off with beforehand, along with checking My.softbank.ne.jp to see if you're getting ridiculous charges...
Some people go into the store, get a prepaid phone, then just swap the SIMs. No prepaid phone here comes with data!
Others are moving from a featurephone to a smartphone. Those have data, but are tied to a specific APN. When pulling down more data than allowed from that APN, they charge exorbitant fees. Hence plan changing is a good thing.
Finally, some people go from iPhone to another Android. iPhones here have totally different APNs they attach to.
It's all in the name controlling the plans for their customers, that's all. Connect to the one you're paying for, then you shouldn't have any problem.
Again, I used an AT&T treo 750, HTC Tilt, HTC Tilt 2, from T-mobile, and an out-the-box unlocked iPhone 3GS from Singapore with no issues. Of course you NEVER tell them that you're using a different phone from the one that's on their system. But as long as you're connected properly, they generally don't care.
That being said, theres another option called B:mobile here. They're an MVNO and use DoCoMo's network. They just sell you a prepaid SIM card. I may try them out, just to see what kind of service is there and if it could save me some ¥. This guy is test one right now actually:

Wow, that was really informative starrwulfe. I was looking for this kind of info because I just got an Atrix off of ebay and I plan to use it with a Dell Streak's SIM which I got from softbank on the 2-year contract. You're saying that if I backup my APN settings from the Streak I should have no problems on the Atrix, correct?
For the record, I pay about 9,000 yen per month. That includes ~6,000 for the unlimited data plan, ~1800 for the phone, and all the crap you have to sign in when you make the contract.
OP, If you are going to stay in Japan long enough and you intend to use a lot of data on the Atrix you may want to consider getting a basic android smartphone from softbank on an unlimited data plan and swapping SIMs.
Exactly.
I have a Sharp Galapagos SH005 here now, but like you, I'm switching to an Atrix too (in fact it should be here before Saturday) and that's exactly what I plan to do.
Easy way to tell what APN you should connect to is to check the color of the SIM cards. Black ones are iPhone only cards, gray ones with green bands specifically say "SMARTPHONE" on them-- they go into the Android phones here. Feature phones have a regular gray card.
You can find the APN info and password easily by googling a little... But if you can back up your APN info, can you share it with me? mine is locked (current phone can't be rooted)
Ok, now I'm having trouble here with getting my Atrix set up on the Softbank network.
Phone calls and SMS work, but data doesn't.
Seems they have some unpublished APNs now with the new android phones. My Galapagos plugs into some other APN than what the normal silver cards did. Unfortunately I can't see what my APN is now on my current phone since they've locked that part out.
What I'm also afraid of is that they may have also started using things like imei checking and user agent binding as well. Great, now what can I do?
Sent from my SBM005SH using XDA App
Just so you know, I have this with sim card out of my iPhone and my atrix works on the softbank network. So it was see if only thing stopping me for connecting to softbank is apn info.
again if anybody has sharp galapogos APN information for softbank I would happily pay pal a donation

It was APNs....sort of. Motorola Atrix requires you to add your Username and Password to a file in '/system/etc/ppp/peers/pppd-ril.options'. With out this you can call and use wi-fi but can not use mobile data.
and for APN's this site is helpful:
http://android.modaco.com/content/a...internet-mms-apk-for-softbank-users-in-japan/
Just remember is you want tethering and aGPS add them to the list in APN Type. So it should read default, supl, mms, agps, dun, tether remember NO spaces
Starrwulf do you have root on you Galappagos phone? if so you can look at the APNs.....Let me make a guide quickly and I will update this post.
Required:
SQLite editor
Root
1) Open SQLite editor and accept the root permissions.
2) Go to Dialer storage.
3) telephony.db
4) carriers
This opens a database file with all the APNs preloaded on the phone. You should be able to look for the one that has a 'Yes' in the current field.
I assume this is the same or similar on the Galapagos (I don't have one specifically though)
Thanx _Dennis_ for being so helpful!
Unfortunately, this thing has no root-- or rather may have temporary root, but not full root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054132

If I could gain just enough access to that file, then maybe theres a good chance it's in there.
I don't think SuperOneClick works... any suggestions?
maybe try gingerbreak? it may gain you root but you may not be able to change anything, which would be ok.
Or even better do you have adb access? if so I will find the correct .db file.
--edit: correct file is /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db

You, another friend of mine here on Gtalk, and I found that MoDaCo thread all at the same time!
Those settings did the trick actually! So now I'm good to go. Now I need to figure out how to push that other mms.apk thru ADB to get my useragent changed...
BTW I'm new to the Android Mod scene. I started messing with WinMo back in the States, then moved here and had a very hacked Tilt 2 on softbank... when it gave up the ghost, I went into the iPhone jailbreak scene. Now I'm here! So I'll accept any and all advice you can give me, sensei/senpai!
You don't really need the mms app Download 'Handcent' from the market and change the UA in settings. Also I suggest getting 'market enabler' requires root but it allows you to fake a US sim card in the market and get US only apps.
I have Hancent... But I don't see anywhere to change the UA in the settings.... Am I missing something?
I originally posted this to WPcentral but no one seems to care... I find it quite compelling and I thought I'd share...
I have read a lot of different forums that The Lumia 920 from Roger has a hard time working with other carriers when unlocked. Specifically, internet Sharing seems to be broken.
Some have speculated that the phone is supposed to "detect" or "read" the settings right off the sim card but all the Rogers phone owner have reported that this is not happening.
I like evidence, not speculation. So I went ahead and downloaded the RM820_1232.2109.1242.1002_RETAIL_nam_canada_200_02_100347_prd_signed ROM off nokia's web site using NaviFirm+ 1.7. then I hex-edited the rom itself...
Boy is that stuff interesting. I found a section written in XML called "OEMCustomizationPackage". That sounded too good to be true... so I dug up the xml and found a bunch of interesting settings like custom ring tones, initial tile placement BUT...
I also found this...
<Component ComponentName="ConnectivityCustomizations">
<SettingsGroup>
<Setting Name="ADC path set" Value=""/>
<Setting Name="ADC enabled" Value="0"/>
</SettingsGroup>
Call me crazy but ADC in WP8 parlance stands for "automatic data configuration" and unless I'm dumb as a rock, the setting sure seems to me like it's disabled!!!
Now of course If only there was another line that said <Modified by your carrier to make your life miserable = 1> but sadly there aren't.
So it begs the question... was the setting disabled by Nokia?, Rogers? or worst... Microsoft?
I don't expect I'll have an answer to this but I have a support call in with Nokia that got bumped to Level 2 support... the conversation will get interesting
[Update]
I looked at the OEMCustomizationPackage XML for the ATT firmware and ADC is disabled (tested on RM820_1232.2109.1242.1001_RETAIL_nam_usa_100_01_95122)
did the same for a random European firmware... settled on the France firmware (RM821_1232.2109.1242.1001_RETAIL_eu_france_267_01_95741 ) and the setting is NOT IN the OEMCustomizationPackage XML
Now I'm not gonna waste any more bandwidth testing other firmwares but this is evidence enough to prove there was a deliberate effort to cripple the North American firmware by ATT and Rogers. I cannot wait to talk to the support rep from Nokia and hear what he has to say... Best case scenario, they let me have a generic Firmware and I'm home free... but most likely, they'll release an app just like they did with the lumia 900. It was called "Nokia Network setup"
[Update]
Hmmm, that's an interesting find! Keep us updated if Nokia comes back to you with anything.
I’m stuck over in the UAE right now. I have a brand new 920 from AT&T that I can’t use because no one can sim unlock them yet. Would it be possible to flash this thing with another ROM and get it sim unlocked so I can use it over here?
Thanks,
Dave
I remember buying the samsung focus and windows breaking the device to change registry settings. This was the same issue that the Focus had...unfortunately i don't remember the explaination that was given but it was Samsung saying that automatic data configuration, for whatever reason, frequently configured the device wrong or just wouldn't work so they disabled the setting. I think it a BS excuse considering they have the registry entry why would you disable it and why wouldn't it work in the first place....just my 2 cents. But, I don't believe it too much to be a conspiracy theory going on lol.
Flashing ROMs normally does not change the status of the SIM lock, so no for you over at UAE.
Considering the OEM customizations: yes, branded phones run the same software as unbranded devices but there might be settings to allow or disallow certain functionality. Also the Apps loaded by default on a hard reset are different (OEM Apps can be included).
So while the update package to get your 920 and my 920 to the Apollo+/Portico Update most likely will include the same binaries that does not mean that you have the same functionality available (some carriers who only operate on 3G for example removed the possibility to switch their devices into 2G only mode). Internet Connection Sharing was another feature that was disabled on some branded devices although drivers, etc. are deployed onto those devices as well.

Thank you!
most carrier branded wp phones have adc turned off since wp7 days. That is nothing new and certainly expected. typically, you can turn it back on once you sim unlocked your phone and you are lucky enough to find network setup app from the manufacturer,
The network setting app is here!!
As an update to my adventures, I did find the Nokia network setup app... it's called "access point". I tried to do a marketplace search but no results... but a guy over at WPCentral just dropped the marketplace link
I'm apparently too new to post outside links so PM me and I'll get you the link...
I just browsed to the link on my phone and was able to install the app. It add an "access point" item to the setting menu just like the Dev ATT phone they handed out prior to launch
My phone is still locked to Rogers so I have no idea if the app will help me overcome the tethering issues once I get there. on Dec 19th my "30 days on contract" are up so the nasty Rogers people will run out of excuse to deny my unlocking so I'll buy the thing and get as far away from this carrier as I can and hopefully I can get functional Internet Sharing going.
To any Canadian who's lucky to have an unlocked 920 with internet tethering problems... can you confirm this is working?
Thanks.

Wow great news !! Can you confirm a few things for me...
1- Can you confirm you are getting stable and long lasting internet sharing... a lot of people report success but then they write back to report that is stops working...
2- What is your batch number? (mine is 44/2012 it's in the sticker on your box where the IMEI number is )
3- What firmware are you running? (mine is 1232.2109.1242.1001)
4- Did you get the phone unlocked by Rogers or a web site?
Thanks for the feedback! I too want to switch to Telus but with so many users reporting problems with internet sharing, I was getting desperate.

For sjeffrey's sake...
cao0215:did you have to input Telus's APNs, or did the app just pull the data from the SIM card like it's supposed to?
And sjeffrey: please provide your batch number and firmware version so we can document this and try to help you out!

I had set APN to regular sp.telus.com and set access to point Telus. That didn't work.
Just for the hell of it I switched the manual APN entry to isp.telus.com and switched the access point to Koodoo and back to Telus to force it to refresh.
I was able to turn on tethering but I lost data. So it's basically same behavior as before.
Hopefully I can get tethering to work. I'm jealous some of you are getting it to work and I don't :S

Thanks.

Amazing find! I can confirm that this works for me. Unlocked Rogers Lumia 920 on the Telus network.
Here is the link from the WPC post:

edit 1: Never mind, it doesn't work any more.
edit 2: It's hit and miss. Working again a day later after switching from isp.telus.com to sp.telus.com and back.

I created this account just to say thank you! This internet sharing issue has been bugging me for weeks. I can confirm it's working on an unlocked rogers Nokia 920 on Wind. I just installed the access point app, deleted the APN I had manually entered, ran the app and selected Wind as my operator and now everything works including internet sharing.
New to this, but I'll try to explain the best I can.
I've talked to tech support from my old carrier, my new carrier, and Samsung for about 15 hours total. I'm getting absolutely no where.
I purchased a Samsung Galaxy A20 from Spectrum mobile 3 months ago. I ended my service with them and switched to Red Pocket mobile when they had their black friday / cyber monday sim kit deal.
When I activated and ported my number over to Red Pocket I thought there was an issue with the number port.
But going back and forth with customer service they couldn't figure out what was wrong, as my account was activated and they confirmed that they now owned my phone number.
Eventually I realized my device was still locked with Spectrum. They provided me with an unlock code which did not work. They suggested using the unfreeze code which worked, my device said accepted/unlocked.
Phone works, can make calls and send text messages. However,I cannot access data.
My network operator still says Spectrum, and my Access Point name says charter (Spectrum's APN).
I cannot select the Add button, or the Reset to Default button in Access Point Names.
I took this to mean that my device was still locked since the unlock code did not work.
I thought the unfreeze code was specifically for if you attempt too many unlock codes and it locks you out of making more attempts.
That was my understanding, that the purpose of the unfreeze code is to enable you to make more attempts with the unlock code.
Again, I'm not really sure.
But regardless, Spectrum insists that despite it saying that my device is still locked according to their information, that the only way for it to say unlocked on their end is if i actually connect to my new provider, but that they have done everything on their end and that my device is unlocked and I should be able to connect to my new provider.
FUNNY right... in their records it says my device is still locked, but that that's not really accurate, and that it should be unlocked.
However, I have Red Pocket's SIM in my phone. And I can place and receive calls/texts. Spectrum and Red Pocket both use CDMA, so that makes sense to me. But since I am routing through Spectrum still, and I am unable to Add Red Pocket's Access Point Name in my phone, I cannot connect to Data / LTE.
From what I've explained here, do you all feel like my device is truly unlocked?
What is the best way for me to bypass this? How do I get my phone to switch from Spectrum's Access Point Name to Red Pocket's Access Point Name so that I can access Data/LTE ??
Thank you for taking the time to read my plight, and I appreciate any assistance anyone can give me with this.
I am not sure if attempting to root my phone or messing around with those kinds of settings will fix anything. I am not familiar with how to do that, but I will try anything at this point.
I have the A20 under MetroPCS still locked to their network. I can add APN's to it. So not sure why you are having this problem.

My thoughts exactly. Very strange why I am not able to add APNs.
I talked to a Samsung representative who suggested that it is probably either a software issue or the firmware installed by Spectrum.
When I told the Samsung representative that they assured me that my phone is unlocked (although I don't believe they even know what they're talking about since it is listed as locked in their system), he even went as far as to say that my device may be SIM unlocked, but they may have installed some sort of firmware on their phone that locks the Access Point Name to their server forcing the user to stay with them. Thus the phone will be able to take a new SIM, but it won't do the user any good since the firmware installed on the phone will not allow the user to connect to any other provider's Access Point.
I asked the Samsung representative if it was even legal for them to do that? He said it wouldn't surprise him as corporate giants such as Charter try to monopolize markets. He then went on to tell me that Charter took over as the internet provider in his area about a year ago and no longer has any other internet service providers in his area to choose from.
But again, I don't know if this is actually the case. But does anyone have any thoughts about what is going on or any suggestions as to what other things I can try to do to get connected to my new provider?
A quick update in case anyone in the future is wondering about my issue.
So after talking with another Spectrum customer service representative I have discovered that although my device was SIM unlocked over 2 weeks ago, my device is still carrier locked. They put an initial request for a carrier unlock over 2 weeks ago. Then after calling technical support a few days after that they had put in another request for the carrier unlock. A couple of days ago the representative I talked to went through all of the previous activity logs with my phone and discovered that the carrier unlock kept getting stuck on the end process of unlocking. He opened up another case for me (this will be the fifth ticket created for my account), but I expressed my concerns and doubts with him that it will accomplish anything.
I explained to him that if the issue can not be resolved on their end that I am pretty much out of luck. Since I have discovered on several forums that the Samsung A20 US version cannot be rooted, so there is no way to unlock the bootloader and install Samsung factory firmware to bypass the carrier locked APN on my own. I explained to him that if there was a way for me to do it I wouldn't even be calling, and I would have fixed the issue myself. However, since I am pretty much out of ideas to get my phone to work with my new carrier on my own and Spectrum can't seem to figure out how to carrier unlock my device even though they are LEGALLY REQUIRED to do so, that I am pretty much just about to give up and sell this device as a carrier locked phone on Swappa. He said yeah that's probably what I would do too at this point..
I said LOL, yeah but the problem there is I spent over $200 on this phone that I was only able to use for 2 months, and if I go that route I will likely only be able to get $50 for it.
He said yeah I can understand that that's frustrating, but I really don't see any other options you really have.
They also refuse to provide me with any sort of compensation even though clearly the mistake is on their end.
Bottom line.
NEVER BUY A PHONE FROM CHARTER / SPECTRUM.
Considering their business practices I would never buy phone service / internet service / any service they offer in the future, and would highly advise everyone else from ever purchasing anything from them in the future.
I plan to keep updating this XDA forum thread with what I find out about this problem, potential solutions, and hopefully what solves it. Hopefully this will be useful to those with the same or similar problem.
Please excuse typos...
The Solution
The reality is, prevention is the best solution here, do a bunch of research to make sure you don't encounter this problem. Read the rest of the post to better understand.

Thank you in advance for reading this and helping me. (I also posted this in r/LGG8X, and am posting it here because some people don't have accounts with both. The more people that see it, the better, if by chance someone has ideas, wants to help, and has time to post the ideas)
It seems like a lot of people are having this issue, so maybe someone might have an idea.
I bought this phone to replace my Xiaomi Mi 9 (which was on the fritz, turning itself off randomly), about 1.5 weeks ago. I did my research and reasonably concluded that this phone has LTE band 12 and VoLTE; also it would be foolish of LG to not to have that. I could not find the VoLTE or Wifi Calling switches anywhere in the settings app, or in the phone app. I then dialed " *#*#4636#*#* " which opened up the "Testing Settings" (as usual). I click on the "Phone Information" tab, scroll down and find both the VoLTE and Wifi Calling switches, which are, to my dismay, greyed out.
I called Ting and they said, (after getting the IMEI), that this doesn't have LTE band 12, therefore no VoLTE. That confused me, because like I said, my research before buying had already concluded that it has band 12. The Ting rep said that's all he could do for me, so we ended the call. I did another 30 mins of research, again concluded it has band 12 with VoLTE. I also called LG themselves, and the rep there confirmed that this phone has band 12 with VoLTE, they also said "we would be more than happy to verify that the phone works with you carrier through phone conferencing". I asked the rep about about the previously mentioned VoLTE and Wifi Calling switches being greyed out, and they said that's because the phone has those 2 capabilities, but the carrier has to enable them.
I really love this phone, especially in comparison to the Mi 9 (even tho the Mi 9 is a good phone). I love the software better (even with the weird quirks that it has), and the value proposition is quite good. I really don't want to have to get a 3rd new phone in one year. If anyone has any ideas/help that would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
[Edit]: P.S. I think this is partly a problem with LG, and partly with the carriers. I suspect that LG messed up with the IMEI/etc and other important identifiers as to what the device is, what exact version (i.e. LM-G850UM, etc) of a particular model (i.e. LG G8X Thinq Dual Screen, etc). This leads to the cell carrier's infrastructure seeing this phone as incompatible (doesn't see LTE Band 12, when it really is. The cell carriers, (from my own experience with 2 Ting Reps, and from what others have said on other forum threads), can't or won't solve this problem, even tho it may be solvable. From what I have seen on other forums, some got it solved by the cell carrier entering codes on the phone and doing something on their side. If LG and the all the networks would talk to each about this problem and get it solved if possible that would be awesome...
Update - 11/04/2020:
It seems I unintentionally bought a G8X with the Canadian rom LMG850UM20e. I am doubtful, but is the hardware the same or similar enough to flash the USA unlocked rom LMG850QM? Or is there something else I can do to make the Ting network allow VoLTE? As far as I can tell, the Canadian model still supports VoLTE LTE Band 12, but correct me if I'm wrong.
Update - 11/05/2020:
Ting says that my phone has LTE Band 12 and therefore VoLTE, but that will only work on ATT. A bit confusing because (like I said) the particular rom on my phone is Canadian (LMG850UM20e), so why ATT? The explanation for that, it seems is that ATT, (and Sprint), and the unlocked Canadian version have the same sub-model: LMG850UM. The USA unlocked version has a different sub-model (LMG850QM), the rest of the world has yet another sub-model (LMQ850EMW). There are around 15 different versions it seems; see this reddit post on the different models: (can't post the link yet) title: "Hey G8X owner, what is the submodel number and regional code of your unit? And where did you buy it from? I am trying to complete this list, also relating to timing of security updates and Android 10 release." posted in r/LG G8X
It seems like all the versions (LMG850......) have the same hardware, the only difference are the roms, which seem artificially disable certain capabilities of the phone. I am pretty sure my phone would do VoLTE just fine on Ting (or most other carriers). The thing wrong here, I think, is that the IMEI and other specific identifiers of the phone artificially show that the phone does not have the functionality, so the networks don't enable it. It also seems like LG made an agreement or something with ATT as well as Sprint (separately), to release carrier-specific version (as most brands seem to do), and that the phone would fully work on their respective networks and MVNOs, at least the versions in the LMG850UM sub model group, and the USA unlocked sub-model group. LG and T-Mobile seem to have come to no such *official* agreement, unfortunately. I am wondering any of the versions work with T-Mobile and it's MVNOs out of the box, some *modifications* may have to be done in order to get it working on TM towers. There may also be unintentional bugs in some or all roms that are possibly causing, or more likely, adding on to the problem.
Obviously, I am still trying to find my around this problem. I'm considering flashing a USA unlocked rom (LMG850QM sub-model), though not sure if that's possible, or if it'll change what the IMEI and the other specific identifiers tell the cell carrier about compatibility. I also wonder if carriers have the ability to override the artificial restrictions. There is also one report of T-Mobile supposedly fixing the same/similar problem with Sprint for a customer, see u/Veshtarii's comments on this reddit post: (can't post link yet) title: "LG G8X unlocked models having issues with US carriers." Posted in r/LGG8X. Another reddit user used a cheap Tracfone sim card to make his phone work on T-Mobile: (can't post link yet) title: "Tutorial: How to Update eBay Unlocked ATT / AT&T LG G8x" Posted in r/LGG8X. I am unsure if he also has VoLTE working.
Update - 11/06/2020
I'm done with this... It is pretty much impossible. I commented on the "Tutorial: How to Update eBay Unlocked ATT / AT&T LG G8x" post, and the OP responded and said he can't get VoLTE working, even with doing that update. The only thing that could possibly work, is flashing the USA unlocked sub-model onto it. However I probably don't know enough to do it right, but the bigger reason is that it'll probably brick it. I've realized, and should realized when I was doing the research for a new phone, that ATT and TMO's VoLTE/Wifi Calling work differently. They both use propriety coding, which they license to each brand to use in the models they both come to agreement on, and a similar agreement with each MVNO under their towers. LG and TMO seem to have made no such agreement for the G8X, therefore in all practicality, no G8X will work on any of their towers. Also, I called H2O Wireless just to see if my phone works with them, but they said my IMEI is not compatible; so I'm not the Canadian model that I have works in the US at all, that makes me think that not even the versions inside each sub-model aren't even compatible with each other. There is that one situation I mentioned, where the person who was having problems with Sprint before the merger, took it to TMO after the merger and the TMO tech fixed it for him. But I think he must've been having a different problem, because his phone is probably still technically running on Sprint towers. Sprint made the agreement with LG, so VoLTE would work in that instance. Flashing is practically not a solution for most people.
I should've done more research than I did before buying the phone. That is the moral of this story; make sure you do all your "homework" before buying any phone anywhere but the shop of the carrier you are using (or plan to use). That leads me to my number one complaint with phone brands and especially cell carriers as whole: they make it incredibly annoying, often difficult, and confusing to find a compatible phone that isn't on the carrier store. And the problem with that is that everything in any carriers' stores is everything is stupidly overpriced, and then they get you hooked with pricey deals you don't want. If you're reading this, you're most likely like me, you know better than to spend more than you have to on a phone and plan in the carrier store, you know (or at least kinda know) how to get past that. I get that cell carriers want to make money, but I tell you, this is too far. Anyways, the point is, there is no immediate solution, in other words, your only worthwhile solution is prevention, doing a bunch of research. I'm done with this... I'm returning this phone and getting the vanilla G8...
I have the LMG850QM. It has no VOLTE icons while in call even if on band 12. It uses HD+ and that will be shown in dialer during call. Internet does work while in call so believe that it is working. The switches are on like yours but greyed out. Wi-fi calling does work. By turning on airplane mode and then turning back on wifi the dialer will show that calls are being made over Wifi. The OnePlus 6T has VoWifi icons in status bar and this phone doesn't. I will say that this phone gets service in buildings where neither of my 6t's would have service.
