First a bit of background: I bought a refurbished Nexus 7 2012 to increase my knowledge of the Android OS. I have unlocked the bootloader, rooted it, and installed SuperSU. I experimented with both the CWM and TWRP custom recoveries. I've settled on the TWRP platform and have installed TWRP Manager.
The next step I want to embark on is flashing custom ROMs. Here I'm in a quandary. There are so many choices and when I try to read up on them I find so many acronyms and argot that I can't sift through the information. So here is my question, what ROM do you recommend for a starting place and why do you think it's a good choice?

Ultimately I would say that the best ROM is the one your most satisfied with, so try them all and see what you like. Heck if you like a bunch use MultiROM to have several ROM's you can choose between. For actually starting out I would recommend trying a well known ROM such as CM12 or Paranoid Android as these are feature packed yet good for people of all experience levels including a beginner such as yourself. But don't be afraid to experiment with other ROM's for your device and find out what you like. If you go wrong you can always restore your stock ROM backup in TWRP (Do make a stock ROM backup before flashing any ROM's). And if you really go wrong you can always flash a stock Nexus factory image to easily restore your device back to working order. Overall, read about the ROM's, read the flashing instructions, re-read the flashing instructions, and mostly importantly have fun and enjoy the community. If you want to stay close to stock as possible you should go with the CF-root method. Its pretty easy too.
Clockwork recovery is a custom recovery for your phone that enables you to do restoration, maintenance, installation, upgrades operations that your default recovery can't.
You should go for CyanogenMod 7.1 ROM and check it out as it seems to be the most stable mod around , plus it's updated regularly... Altough I would suggest you get a little bit more accustomed to your phone first...
i came across the Cyanogen Mod but it's just that with so much custom ROMs options i couldn't decide which is best

Once you flash your first custom ROM, you'll probably find yourself using it for about 2 or 3 hours then decide to flash an another one cuz you don't like it Just try a few of them and see which one suits you best. There are really some good ones out there , plus its fairly easy and fast to flash them. Good luck

Please excuse the particular noob nature of this post. I have been doing a lot of digging and I just want to make sure I know what I'm doing before I launch into this amazing world of custom software and updates.
I very luckily won myself a Galaxy Tab 10.1 3g wifi (no idea exact model until it comes, as it appears there are a few....)
I have a galaxy nexus, but I've not mucked around with it at all really. A free galaxy tab though, is too much of a temptation not to.
So, in what order should I be doing stuff? From what I can gather it would be:
Root
Download ROM Manager
Install Clockworkmod Recovery
Make a NANDROID backup
From here, I'd like to use an AOKP rom, so I guess I flash that next, then install GAPP's.
Can you change kernel's when you like, or do they have to be done before the custom ROM, or after? Do they effect the custom ROM much?
Once both are on, make another NANDROID if stable?
There's a lot of guides on each step which I'm reading through at the moment, but the overall order isn't discussed that much. Hopefully I have a good jist of whats going on, and I apologise for bringing up such a basic issue yet again.
If it saves me bricking my new toy though, hopefully it will have been worth it.
I also currently use Widgetlocker and ADW launcher on my nexus. Will these work on ROMs? Are they needed? I notice that people post themes up so is there a seperate way of theming when on custom roms?
There's a lot of questions there, so I apologise for spamming. As long as I have the right order of doing things to start with, I'm sure I'll pick up ther rest on the way.

once you have the Clockworkmod Recovery. Make a backup and install any custom rom you like. Yes, you can change kernel's after installing custom rom. Good Luck

So my question is all based on this, and after a lot of reading I found both answers but both were old so not sure which one to trust.
I am currently rooted, unlocked, running joker's CWM & Joker's CM10, and have a nandroid backup from back when I was running stock.
Is step one really to roll back to stock base, re-root my phone, re-unlock my bootloader, and make a new nandroid backup? Or are these instructions assuming we are not already rooted/unlocked?
Can I skip step one and just flash the new radio and then Joker's GSM CM10?
(Long time lurker, first time poster, 9 different phones hacked to bits and this is my first question ever, if this has been asked before no combination of GSM/Stock/SBF found it.)

This might help a bit, ask if you want anything clarified. Their ROMS definition is a little not perfect, A Rom as it is normally used here is a zip file containing all the bits that makes an android install, A custom rom is a bundle of the kernel and android version, tweaks, themes, fixes, modifications, basically everything you use on a system as tailored by the ROM builders.

Hey I have just rooted my transformer Prime and installed NVflash and TWRP. Now I want to install a different type of ROM but with the stock apps. I currently have CM9 installed but I don't like it, it didn't come with the stock apps that I like. So what is a good custom ROM that I can install .
Currently run android 4.0.4
Custom ROM: CyanogenMod 9
Bootloader is unlocked
People here don't like when newbies ask for best ROMs, sorry
Where is the fun in just using what someone recommends anyway? Everyone has different features they think are more important than others.
Try them all out and then go back to the one you like best.
But you should read and follow the threads on enabling nvflash before you go crazy.
Hi all, I'm enjoying reading lots in this forum in order to learn how to unleash my S3. One massive thank you to all who make this community such a great and rich resource. Thanks!
After reading a bunch, I took the XDA plunge. Here's what I've recently done (maybe this will help someone who's considering taking the plunge too. I was surprised at how easy everything was). I rooted my i9300 by flashing CF-AutoRoot via Odin. I then downloaded GooManager from the Market. It installed an open recovery script for me, TWRP. Next, I rebooted to TWRP recovery mode and did a backup and then a factory reset. I flashed temasek's build (v20) of Android 4.3/10.2 with the latest gapps zip (20130813). Then came the moment of truth. I was nervous when my phone took a bit longer to boot. The sweet Cyanogenmod logo just kept swirling. Finally, it booted and I was in love.
I have just a few questions about my phone now.
First, is the TWRP backup I did adequate to get me out of serious trouble if something goes wrong flashing updates? The backup ended up being over 2gb!
Secondly, have I done anything to the kernel? If not, should I?
Thirdly, have I done all that rooting and custom roms have to offer? Do I now just update my rom when new builds come out and continue enjoying my phone? If so, that's great. Just wondering what if anything I could do next, apart from trying other custom roms.
Lastly, what's the proper way to get help troubleshooting glitches/bug with the custom rom I'm using since I'm not yet able to post in its development forum thread? For example, my bluetooth won't turn off and in some apps the screen flickers or doesn't seem to render the window properly.

1. A backup is always adequate on almost all situations and that size is acceptable since most of my backups are around 1.41 gb but I recommend that you also backup your efs since it's one of the most important things to backup on our devices. 2. As far as I know any cyanogenmod based firmware installs it's own custom kernel however this is highly reversible as soon as you flash a stock firmware again.
3. Well the possibility of having a rooted phone are endless. In xda you'll find vast amount of tweaks, roms, kernels etc that you can flash on your device. Even I still keep on flashing things (with precautions of course) whenever i find something interesting.
4. Until you can post that thread just keep posting your question here in the Q & A but search the topic you have in mind first since it's most likely been asked before, just to keep the forum clean as much as possible.

No its not It has note backed up EFS .
Secondly, have I done anything to the kernel? If not, should I?
Your choice .

Thanks for the replies. I booted into recovery and used TWRP to do an EFS backup. Super easy.
