I am planning to buy a GadgetShieldz complete body protection. The question is does Z U need it? And if I put a screen protector will the pencil write properly on the screen?

Old topic here on the forum. Yes you probably should think about buying a screenprotector if you going to use a pen. Its an ordinary plastic sheet on the screen molded on and it will get scratched VERY easy. Also the oleofobic coating will wear off with time. In about three months you are going to notice the sheet getting more of a rough texture where you push and swipe your fingers often.
I would say that the stock screen protector has very a low quality in terms of its lifetime and ability to resist scratches.

Edit: Oh yeah I forgot. No a screen protector will for the most not disturb the ability to discover pen input. And If you do notice that input skips now and then you can always modify the sensitivity of the touch panel by editing a text file

Thanks a ton friend. Firstly, I have been using GadgetShieldz for about 5 years now. On different phones, it has performed beyond my expectations. However, my question was simply this, that will I need a screen protector, to which I've got my reply, Yes.
And secondly, will using a protector hinder in use of a pen. To which you said, No. But would like if someone using GadgetShieldz replies with their feedback.

I have no experience with the gadgetsheildz so can not comment but i have the Mocolo glass protector (from Superusers link above) on both the front and back of my ZU. My ZU already had a few tiny scratches on the original ASF which have now all but vanished with the mocolo glass in place.
However after testing with both pen and pencil and a coin to test the screenwrite input ability (All worked well and recognition was pretty smooth) the mocolo appears to have picked up a few micro scratches around the area i tested. I Cant be sure what caused it to scratch but i decided to not to use anything other than my finger for input and the write/text input isnt a feature i use much.
Other things i noticed are that although the ZU is huge and can be rather awkward to hold on occasion, i found with the front and back glass applied it has become "more" awkward as it now feels so slippy when holding and it definately moves around the table top a bit too freely for my liking...
Also consider the weight. With both sheets of glass in place there is a definite increase in the overall weight of the device. Many will say the increase is negligible but i find coupled with slippy hand feel, the slightly heavier package just adds to the overall awkwardness of the device.
However there is peace of mind knowing the original glass underneath is well protected :fingers-crossed:
I'm sure these issues could be rectified with the use of a gel case on back which i am considering as my ZU looks amazing and the above glass protector fits like a glove but the phone feels more fragile/vulnerable than before.
My backside has cracked. And I like it. Because it shows that my mocolo did the job it was designed to. :good: I might buy a new set later on. It has not affect my user experience because there are no sharp ends or pieces of glass that can hurt me.
What I like about it is that it makes the z ultra rigid and more durable. Without the sheets I can easily bend my device so I just find it positive to have the sheets. And I just love the extra weight and feeling of glass

When you say the back has cracked do you mean the glass underneath the protector has cracked, or has the mocolo glass cracked?
The worry is the front underside glass cracking which from all accounts renders the device non functional to any touch.

a question about screen
Hello everyone,
This is my first post here. I have ordered Z Ultra which will be delivered most probably tomorrow. After ordering i read so many complaints about the screen self breaking problem in Xperia Z series and Sony is not covering it in warranty. I am confuse whether to keep the phone or should i return it. Or is there any way to save or protect the screen. Will applying tempered glass protector solve the problem. People has complained screen cracks even after few days of purchase. I am worried about it, dont want to waste my hard earned money
Please suggest guys about the protector.

If you keep it out of your trousers pockets and not placing it where it can be bent (Yes the Z ultra can be bent very easy) .i.e. for example between your doorkeys and heavy books in your bag or tight pockets in your skinny jeans. Or subjecting your device to fast temperature changes for example from direct sunlight indoors to minus degrees winter outdoors and vice versa. Keep it in your pocket to ease the temperature change etc.
Think about the phone like its a glass oven baking dish because it has two safety glass sheets and addition to that it has air trapped inside it because the Z ultra is waterproof or at some level at least (1meter/30min?)
If you are careful where you put it then you don't have to worry that the screen might self crack. I hope I did not scare you now.. :silly:

I put an illumishield screen protector over the stock screen, because of what I read about scratches. So screen protectors are from and back.
Getting the DSC-QX10 lens, so I got the adapter SPA-ACX3 for XZ. Lens locks onto the back of mobile ? Phone .
Plus, I wrap my XZ in a microfiber cloth , and carry in my messenger bag, with NFC Bluetooth headphones .

I am using it since 4 days with all possible precautions. I havnt put it in my jeans pocket yet. Carrying it in shirt's pocket all the time

I wish I didn't listen to the people that told me I didn't need on for the i9100. I had to live with that scratch for nearly 15 months.
Got one from day one with this, and will do for all future phones until I can trust there won't be a single scratch over the life of the phone.

yes.. you need that... i would prevent you screen from scratches.. z ultra is not protected by corning gorilla glass or something.. its just a shatter proof glass.. so its better to buy a screen protector

That's because you're supposed to cover the anti-shatter sheet (which is not a screen protector just anti-shatter) with a screen protector that you can easily replace.
I just posted a thread in this same forum section about official Sony ones I got from Japan. But remember they are not the same as your anti-shatter sheet, you're supposed to put them on top of the anti-shatter sheet.
In terms of what they cover, they are the closest to the anti-shatter sheet as they cover all the sensors, the Sony ones just don't cover the camera and the earpiece.
If you order the Sony potector, you have two choices. You can either put it on top of the anti-shatter sheetand hope you wont be able to see the scratch anymore through this one or you can remove the anti-shatter sheet and place this one down alone. Its up to you.
I've already removed the sheet. It's now completely free of protection as I screwed up putting on the screen protector.
It's more sensitive dust and fingermarks now, but overall I'm happy. Will be placing a screen protector on it soon again when I get around to it.
Took mine off today. I seriously, repeat, seriously doubt that sheet can do ANYTHING. It peels off like regular screen protector, does not glue to the glass at all. Once you have a corner up it lasts less than a second to peel it off.
For some of you repeating what SONY want you to believe, carry on.

I have Scractched My Sony Xperia S , and it kinds of irritates when there is more White ,, I heard and read that the factory applied screen Protector can be removed, the Question is , is it a screen Protector or a shatter Protector..
In the case i do remove it how do i clean the glass if there is any residue gum and will it affect the screen in any way... Should i Put on a New screen Protector Once i Remove the original Factory fitted one.

Yes it is a shatter protector thick layer, I damaged mine too (Xperia P), I removed it and then applied a good quality screen protector, no residue no marks are left when the shatter protection is removed, hope this helps.

I had no idea the provided protectors had to go on top of the already applied one. Is it written in the manual/instructions?
Anyway, what is a good screen protector that can replace the shatter one to a good enough standard? I have scratches on mine, a rather large scuff over the front camera, making it unusable. So I suppose I could remove it and replace it with a protector?

Yeah if I put my face up to the screen during direct sunlight I can just make out tiny scratches. Some of them are not permanent and some clearly are. The screen has been very good vs heavy scratches, but still gets light scratches like every other phone screen I have had. If you were to put a screen protector on you wouldnt even notice the scratches. Light scratches will always happen and it doesnt really bother me unless I can see them.
Edit: I did receive a free Spigen screen protector so I will try it out and see if I like it or not just for the hell of it. Generally though I prefer the naked screen and even my old hero with gorilla glass 1 came through just fine except for the minute almost imperceptible scraches.
Folks, Gorilla Glass is a marketing ploy. It doesn't offer any real scratch resistance over normal glass, but the compound it's made of makes it less likely to shatter (two different things). When it comes to scratch resistance, you're looking at the Mohs scale.

You may be more familiar with this than you think. Diamond is a 10, the hardest substance known to man. Diamond can only be scratched by another diamond or a laser.
Glass has a rating of 6-7, depending on the hardness of the glass. Plastic is a 3-4.
If you take your keys over a glass screen (or a glass window), touch it to the surface, and rub with a little pressure (just enough to gain a degree of resistance), you WILL NOT scratch the glass. I've even scared the crap out of someone by hacking at my Zune HD's screen with a carbon-steel steak knife, and not a scratch.
So what will cause you to scratch your glass screen? Two things;
-a softer material (like metal) and force, not resistance. Yes, if you slam something into the screen, it may very well get a small crack, small enough that we see it as a scratch. Because, while glass is very scratch resistant, it easily shatters. It's force that gives us those small "scratches."
-dirt/sand - Sand (quartz sand, specifically) is an active ingredient in glass. If you get small particles of sand or other types of dirt on the screen and then wipe it off with your shirt (or even a microfiber cloth), you can develop small scratches in your screen. The most annoying is those who wipe with a circular motion, as it leaves rings in the screen. Want to avoid this? Take a SMALL amount of Endust for Electronics and a paper towel and gently wipe off the screen. The liquid will act as a buffer between the screen and the dirt. Then, take a microfiber cloth (those little eyeglass cleaning cloths that come with screen protectors) and wipe off the residue left by the Endust and any pieces of the paper towel.
When you use a quality screen protector (SGP, Clarivu, Martin Fields), you're putting a plastic overlay over the phone. While this will scratch more easily than the glass screen, if applied correctly, it acts as a shock absorber, thus making it harder for the screen to shatter. It protects from scratches by taking the scratches itself, and it protects from shattering by absorbing the force of the blow.
The wet applications like the Invisible Shield are so thin that they don't noticeably increase shatter resistance. They'll just keep the screen together when shattered. The Invisible Shield is harder to scratch though, making it so that you don't have to replace it as often (it looks nicer longer than a normal plastic screen protector). Basically, it protects from scratches by deflecting them, but doesn't offer any real shock absorption.
Gorilla glass claims a hardness of 9 on Mohs scale which is utter bs. It realistically has a hardness of about 7-7.5 max. Normal glass can range from 6-7.2 depending on the type. Diamond is 10 and Sapphire is 9 which is what the make high end watch faces out of but is damn expensive. If Gorilla Glass was a 9 then they would use it for the watch faces since it is much much cheaper. I have a Citizen watch that has sapphire and the face is scratched as **** because I have had it for 12 years.
Remember as long as the scratches are the insanely small type caused by sand grains and such, you can easily get some special polish and buff those right out. The one nice thing about our screens not having oleophobic coating is you dont have to worry about damaging the coating when you polish it.
The best way for a manufacturer to reduce scratches is to put a chin on the phone like the Hero had. This way the phone screen never touches the ground.
When I got the phone I thought that the phone had one screen protector installed and that the other one in the packge was spare. How wrong I was. Now the shatter-resistant protector is full of small scrathes, even tough I haven't had keys or anything else on the same pocket. I've had the phone for about three months now.
I ordered Martin Shields few days ago, and I'm going to replave the shatter-resistant protector with that.
I had Wrapsol on my Galaxy Note and was pretty satisfied with it, but unfortunately they don't make one for P. My wife has Zagg on her Galaxy S, but it's bit too stick for my taste.
I put a screen protector on today to test it with one and it was on for all of 30 seconds before I tore it off. I just cant stand the things. Perfect thing for me would be a fold over case but as I use my left hand for the phone, they all fold the wrong way.
The phone was completely unusable for me after removing the shatter protection. The glass itself is a sticky mess, even after wiping of the goo left from the shatter protection, fingerprints and dust stick like crazy and is a real chore to clean.
I bought a Steinhall crystal clear film and the phone is now smooooooth as butter. I absolutely love it.

It gets better after a while. Mine is nice and smooth. I got a free spigen clear with my case but it didn't feel as good as bare glass.

So I've read that a few people on this forum have removed their Factory ASF, though I haven't read much feedback on how this affected the device:
- was the sensitivity of the screen altered?
- did the screen quality change?
- is there sticky residue left after removal?
- if so, does the residue come off after a few weeks of removal?
I've watched several videos where the ASF is removed off of the Xperia Z, but I have yet to come across videos for the Xperia TABLET Z.
(Just Search "Xperia Z anti shatter film removal" on Youtube)
So far, the feedback is good for removing the ASK off the Xperia Z, but is it really safe for the Xperia Tablet Z?
Should I :
a) Remove the ASF and leave it as so

I recklessly went ahead and removed the ASF with a box cutter and peeled of the film and I am satisfied with the results!

The SONY logo is still on, but after washing the surface with a cloth and water, most of the adhesive is gone and it has a much better feel to it than the default film!
With that said, I plan on purchasing a Screen Protector anyways and have just bought the Poetic Slimline Case.
So far, I like the change because there is:
>Less Friction (After washing the tablet)
>Bettter Responsiveness
>Scratch resistance that eclipses the ASF
>A more premium feel to the screen
This DOES void your warranty so be wary of that, but in my opinion this was a worthwhile change!

It actually is resistant to scratches, I have absolutely no idea why Sony decided to apply a scratchable film on top of their scratch resistant screen, it really seems like nonsense. Plus, the glass surface seems smother after washing it, so I definitely recommend doing it, I doubt it affects shatter resistance, if you drop your tablets from 1 meter/3ft, it's screen is likely to break either way.
I ordered the Poetic Slimline Case, so that'll add protection to the tablet too; it theoretically renders the ASF's "purpose" useless since it offers shock redistribution. The screen remains a fingerprint magnet, though, but it's not as bad as having the film on.

A: Yes, The screen feels more responsive. An overall improvement. +1

A: The screen is definitely clearer and fingerprints are less prominent An overall improvement. +1

A: Yes, but a cloth and water or a screen washing solution removes it after a bit of rubbing, not much effort is needed.

I removed the shatterproof film on mine within a week of getting the tablet. I hate the feel of screen protectors and like to leave all my devices unprotected!
Anyway, I'd highly recommend anyone thinking of it to go ahead and remove it. YES, it does improve touch sensitivity and its so much better to touch real glass than a plastic film. I didn't notice much change in the display quality and would love to see a kernel which will let me change some of the gamma settings (way too warm for me now and blacks aren't dark enough).
Removing the film is not that easy and there will be some residue left behind but it comes off with a days use.
I also removed the film.
Now I find the color reproduction better, picture seems brighter, touch sensitivity unchanged.
And indeed the feeling of touching glass is better!
Only thing is, now the rim is a bit higher than the screen glass (just the amount that equals the thickness of the Sony screen protector which is surprisingly thick), which doesn't feel as smooth to the fingers when holding the device.
You can adjust the white balance by rooting the tablet and installing the white balance from the Xperia ZL. There is a thread somewhere (Xperia ZL white balance ported to Xperia Z or so) with instructions how to install. Works flawlessly here. For removing the yellowish/greenish tint, you have to increase the saturation of blue/violet tones (complementary color).

You have to cautiously lift one corner of the film with a very thin blade, for instance a carpet knife. Then you can grab the film and peel it off.
I am using Poetic Slim Case. It perfectly fits with luxury look and feel.
I bought Sony case and returned within an hour after walked out of the store. Ridiculous expensive but feel cheapo.

I didn't notice much change in the display quality and would love to see a kernel which will let me change some of the gamma settings (way too warm for me now and blacks aren't dark enough).
Removing the film is not that easy and there will be some residue left behind but it comes off with a days use.

I am still rocking the shipping plastic screen which goes over the ASF. lol.
I'd just like to point out the "purpose" of the shatterproof screen protector is to prevent shattering (key word being shatter meaning shards of glass coming Off the screen the screen) which the protector does its job and keeps the shards on the device thus making it shatterproof. It does not make it crack proof. And replacing with another screen protector Will retain the original shatterproof ability. I am happy to have stumbled across this thread as I was unaware there was a protector and was mad that it scratched so easily. Now I have a way to remove those scratches.
I have to be entirely honest here, i got my XTZ 4 months ago and i just now realised it even has an antishatter film
i was directed here by another kind member, after noticing my EasyAcc case was causing scratches on the screen.
I am glad that the screen itself has not been scratched, but instead the ASF. Was effing annoyed when I saw the scratches!
Now that I know it is just the ASF I am going to keep it on and allow it to take more punishment before I take it off! Then i'll decide whether to buy another protector or leave the screen naked.
Was considering getting the Official Sony case, but feedback from people here is not good, so I guess the seach continues for an alternative case.
I'd recommend against buying the Sony case. It's too expensive for the design and quality. My first one was damaged within 2 months of normal use.... Luckily they replaced it.

removing ASF from my tablet Z is the best thing I have done..... sharper and more responsive with my stylus.... and more ....

I just removed mine almost two years after I bought the tablet. Brilliant. You can imagine the level of scratching on the tablet by now!!!! Now, let's get lollipop and it'll feel like that I got a brand new tablet for nothing!
Removed mine after many years with this tablet and sadly regret:
- Glass is uncoated so feels worse to touch, has higher friction, and picks up oily marks. Refraction from fingerprints is now visible when the display is on; oleophobic coating normally prevents this
- Screen appearance is identical, no change in colours/contrast/etc. I'm a nerd when it comes to monitor calibration so I don't say this lightly!
- Most importantly: touch input is degraded. I have verified with the developer tools that swipes misbehave - either registering as a tap, or as a swipe that jumps to the corner of the screen. Scrolling feels broken now - often fails to continue momentum scrolling after removing finger due to the corner jump
Overall would not recommend, the digitiser is calibrated for the ASF to be present. The only positive is fewer scratches.

* I believe touch sensitivity is improved. Finicky DPI sliders in Paranoid Android setups give me no trouble now - before jumping 239,243,241 when I really want 240 dpi exactly. Pencil also works perfectly as a stylus.
* I believe screen brightness and clarity are improved. Subjective and probably due to removal of the ASF (and its invisible tiny scratches)
* Extra glass makes the phone a bit thicker but also much stiffer and I liked this. I also have a Z1 and I miss how solid that phone felt in my hand. Ultra always felt a bit too flimsy (bendy). I also had to widen the slot on my DK30 (sandpaper glued to a flat stick aka big emory board)
* Getting alignment correct is tricky - glass-M slightly smaller than the phone screen edges. Mine went on crooked but I can live with that.
* No dust or bubbles in mine. Used the shower trick of old school film photographers. Long hot steamy shower will effectively clean the room of even tiny dust particles.
* Removing the ASF is a truly harrowing experience (see the other thread). Halfway through you *will* have an "Oh God what have I done" moment. Still totally worth it.

I'm getting to the point where I'm looking for a high quality, preferably tempered glass, screen protector. My ASF is getting more and more ****ed up day by day (I'm starting to see how bad it really is). I've done some research and found the screen protectors that appear early on in google's search results and through various XDA threads, but I'm curious what other people are using/have used.
I've decided to put this thread together so there can be a repository for screen protector information. This way people who want to protect their ZU from day 1 or those who are going to remove the ASF and cover the phone with something else can have a centralized place to get the information they need.
If you don't mind, please reply to this thread with information regarding the screen protector you are currently using or have used, what kind it is (PET, tempered glass, other), price, the link to purchase it, pictures (if possible), and what you thought of it/if you recommend it.
I'll update the thread (post 2) with the information as it comes in. Hopefully this can help everyone.

As you can see, I'm trying to build this thread. There's not really much info yet.
I've got a Skinomi protector for XZU, haven't applied it yet ... not sure what the advantages or downsides are of removing the ASF ATM. I'll prolly apply it tomorrow though.

I'd personally remove the ASF, I don't like it. But then again, I haven't removed mine yet cuz it's a PITA. Let me know what you think of the protector, post some pics, etc.

How can you tell if you would prefer to not have the ASF if you haven't removed it? Given the seemingly widespread issue of XZU breaking I'd be pretty leery of removing the ASF unless a very sturdy case was going on. I was tempted to try out a product from Armorz which I think was called Tech R(?) - it's 2 tempered glass pieces for back and front - but Iwasn't sure how much support this would give against twisting.
I'm intending to put on the Skinomi Techskin tonight before I go to bed as it's recommended to leave it for 5 hours or so to dry.

I know I'd prefer the ASF removed because of how it looks. It's beat up and scratched, and I've babied this thing. Plus, it's plastic. Glass > Plastic. It's not going to be any less sturdy without the ASF. It's not like a tiny 0.4 mm piece of plastic is going to provide any sturdiness. All it does is contain the glass fragments from flying anywhere if the screen were to break.Underneath the ASF is normal smartphone glass (don't know if it's Gorilla Glass or another brand).
Putting a tempered glass protector on it would definitely make it more sturdy. That's the point, it's tempered.

Atfolix is pretty decent quality. Just switched today.from.anti reflex to crystal clear. Anti reflex is nice when being outside in the sun, but it really weakens the quality of the screen,it looks quite blurry. And what is most annoying... Using pens and stuff on the anti reflex protector will basically lead to drawing on the screen protector.
Crystal clear is perfect.wouldn't notice it's there at all.
I've used atfolix on all of my phones and never had any problems. Very easy to apply, very scratch resistant.

Impressions were thus: Applying the protector is simply a matter of misting the adhesive side of the film (liquid is supplied, I believe it's just water and surfactant), applying it to the device and waiting.
As far as optics goes I could not tell the difference between viewing the screen with it off or on the device after it had "cured" (Skinomi's word). Touching it felt like touching a layer of soft rubber that had a tiny bit of grip. I found it didn't impede me in any way but I prefer the feel of other screen protectors and of course no screen protector.
I had to remove it in any case as I got a speck of something underneath it that I couldn't remove but I think I would've removed it in any case due to the feel of it.

I'm weary of E-bay and all it's anonymous vendors - but MIME/Ghost was out of stock and Bodyguardz doesn't have a glass protector for our device so E-bay it was!

I applied Glass-M screen protectors on both the front and back of my phone yesterday, and have been very happy with it so far. It's added a little weight, but it feels sturdier and more premium than before, and looks better than the plastic screen protector I had previously. The touch is also a lot smoother than the plastic one, which was a bit rubbery. I installed mine on top of the ASF, both front and back, since I didn't want the "harrowing" experience of removing it. I feel like it's protected well enough to do without a case, though I may get a slim one to cover the edges of the phone as well. Highly recommended. :good:

I haven't changed my mind, and also got a Muvit Bimat case, which has been a perfect combination. It still looks new.
So i have read rants on the Z1 having self breaking glass, and alittle on the ultra. Most of the threads on the ultra though have been, slight to moderate abuse (sat on)(backpack of stuff) causing breaks. Not the classic Z1 of "took phone out of front pocket". My normal routine is only having the phone in my front pocket when going from my desk to the car. Other than that its on my desk or left in my car (i hate walking around with a phone in my pants).
Mines coming this week and i kinda want to take some preventive steps, and wondering if sony really is replacing "not blown to bits" screens under warranty in at least the USA.
I hear it comes with a factory "screen protector" that you should leave on, and put another screen protector on top of it. Is that true or is the factory protector just the stock "tabbed" film that should be removed right after opening the box? I have a front/back screen protector coming, but wanted to know if i should peel off the factory one first.

one year in, and no glass breaking

screen protector, i have one on top of the anti shatter film provided with the phone, both front and back, and both scratched to hell, but too lazy to replace
Definitely put a aftermarket screen protector over the anti shatter film. The ASF is too soft, but is a pain in the arse to remove by all accounts
I've had my ZU for about 9 months now and have dropped it 3 times onto concrete, once without any screen proctor or case, the other two times has been with a wallet/flip case. The last time I dropped it the case even broke - still the screen is intact.
I too thought it wont happen to mine, till it really did, of course it's not self breaking glass for no reason, but more likely the most logical reason I could think of is, the stress accumulated from the daily use, a bit of pressure while in pocket, or backpack, along with the heat / cold temperature, whatever other bull crap from regular use, over a period of time, that stress cause the glass to be broken.
I pretty much babied my Z Ultra, have back casing, Glass M on the front, Skinomi on the back, never dropped, all in like new condition. Then last Sunday I was on my bike ride, put it inside my backpack, along with my wallet, then couple hours later, took it out from my backpack only to find the glass, under the M Glass screen protector, under the original ASF, has a hairline crack, and pretty much as good as brick, since it wont register any touch, I can see a call coming in, but cant answer it since the display doesnt work.
OP said it happens with Z1, I read that it happens with Z2, and it happens with my Z Ultra, so I think it's just something on their glass quality along with their full glass design, it is impacting a small number of them, not all, just small number, but still the problem indeed does exists.
But I still buy another Z Ultra in a heart beat without much thinking, as a matter of fact already got another one from expensys, with the price is so cheap now, the smoothness, the crisp display, the waterproofness, it still worth every penny.
Mine broke in the pocket, and so did others.
It can break. But with that said, the risk yours will break in the pocket with no abuse is small.
Sony aren't very consistent in handling these cases. Sometimes they get it fixed on warranty, sometimes they're not. But if you get a first negative answer just send in a complaint and they might turn around (as in my case).
I just got mine back. I had the asf removed on the previous one, I'm not taking it off now. And I'm doubling up with tempered glass protectors.
i personally recommend removal of the anti shater layer, if you live in humid climates, as it can cause the residual moisture and oils from your fingers to cause key presses. i had a bad issue with this till i spend an hour with a razor blade removing it.
some people also claim that removing the layer voids your warranty, but i had the phone replaced about a month back with my extended warranty and had no issues with replacement regardless of having the film removed.

i live right on the equator, and have not had any problems with this (i also use a screen protector on top of the antishatter film). do you mean to say by removing the anti-shatter film, the glass doesn't pick up any fingerprints and oil? a screen can only be oleophobic for so long.
To those who have had the screen crack in their pockets: were you using a hard case to provide rigidity to the device?
I also just received a Z Ultra and read through the massive threads on Sony's forums on these problems. It just seems the device is so thin it has too much flex in the pocket. I'm even hesitant to use the leather flipstyle case if it doesn'tt provide enough rigidity.
I'm thinking maybe the aluminum bumper case with GlassM protectors on both sides would work nicely together. Hopefully the aluminum won't degrade the signal quality too harshly.

Those hair thin aluminum bumper cases wont do squat, the thick glassM m shields wont do squat. The device is just too long and think. Your best bet is to treat it like a full size tablet. Dont sit with it in your pocket, dont put it in your bag without being in a separate compartment. The poor thing is like 1/4" thick and made out of aluminum and glass. I still dont know why they choose this glass. I can take my droid incredible with gorilla glass and pound the screen on the corner of a desk over and over, no scratches. This sony phone just doesnt have any flex for the glass.

But if flex is the issue then wouldn't a solid metal frame that doesn't bend around the perimeter of the phone rectify such concern?

Yes but the aluminum bumper case is very flimsy stamped aluminum. You would need something with zero give like aircraft grade. An aluminum or plastic shell would be the way to go, but That bumper case is just to prevent chiping of the sides, and give a mm lip when laying the phone on its front/back.
I just use a rubber back cover and THAT'S IT. No problems for me. And yes i keep it in my jeans' pocket most of the time. It does hinder my movement a little though

The better way to deal with the size is not to put in jeans pocket. In winter, jacket pockets I guess are ok. In summer, I guess the best way would be to buy a camera bag or something for this. I think that would solve this problem.
I just got the phone and I am kinda surprised to see how thin it is. Definitely not a phone you should stress too much.

Sure it's safe as long as you don't mind the eventual tiny scratches or never drop the phone where the display hits a surface hard enough to crack. I use a screen protector mainly to avoid the inevitable tiny scratches (never completely rely on Gorilla glass) and on the off chance it helps in a direct display hit.
Its all up to you but I never fully trust a bare display as I've gotten burned by the tiny scratches on previous devices. Plus a non-scratched display helps with resale value.
Depends on the case you use, if you use no case then no, if you use a case with a decent lip protection then yeah.
I wouldn't recommend it. I removed the SP on mine because i felt like it was getting too many scratches and losing sensibility and Gorilla Glass 5 was fine for normal usage. I totally regret it because now i have a lot of small scratches and one very noticeable on the bottom, and I take good care of my phone, the worst thing now is to find a good and cheap screen protector, not even the plastic one come close to the one installed.
Yeah remove it.... The quality of the screen protector is crap. Here using a OnePlus 5 without case and without screen protector. Not a single scratch. Day one user.
Remember to put the phone alone in your pocket. And select the type of pocket you put it in.

Apparently the GG5 is not as strong in scratch resistance as GG2. The op5 will scratch easier if you were coming from a oneplus one.
Every phone I've had got scratches eventually except for the Nexus one lol. I haven't gotten any on my oneplus 5 yet. I had three screen protector on all but maybe a few days total. Because I'm always shoving my phone into the dirty chest pocket of my florescent work vest, there is going to be sand and dirt occasionally getting on the screen and that will likely scratch it eventually.
