[Q] ZU GPE - No Recovery, But have access to OS and Fastboot - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hi guys,
Was trying to load custom recovery on the phone. Its 4.4.4 GPE Z Ultra I unlocked bootloader by Sony's website, and then thinking it will be like other GPE phones, I ran the command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery philz_touch_6.12.8-togari.img
I got an OK and when I tried to enter recovery, I get a black screen. I am able to get into OS, and into fastboot, but not recovery.
Next I loaded doomkernel v02 for GPE, and flashed boot.img as per the thread
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Rebooted the phone and i still can NOT get into recovery. The phone does display DoomKernel logo.
How do I get customer recovery on it? TWRP, CWM, or PHILZ doesn't matter! I am trying to downgrade to 4.4.2.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide?!

Bump!

[Q] Grey screen after flashing boot.img on sola

Hi all,
I was frustrated with the performance of stock ROM on my xperia sola and tried to flash it with custom ROM (CyanogenMod 11). Something went wrong. And now I can't boot device This is my firts try, so probably I did something wrong during the process.
What I did
In general I followed this procedure and did not managed to get to their step 12.
Details:
1. At first I unlocked bootloader (using official Sony procedure)
2. Then I iInstalled RecoverX from Play.
3. Then rooted the device.
4. Then downloaded stable CyanogenMod 11 (cm11.0-0-pepper.zip), copied it to SD card. I've also extracted boot.img and flashed it using fastboot (with no errors).
The problem
After the steps above the device does not boot. I see "sony xperia ste" screen, then it disappears and screen is grey.
I've tried to enter the recovery mode (by holding volume down button), but the result is the same - grey screen.
What I tried (and it did not worked)
I'm still able to enter fastboot mode. So I tried the step 4. with latest nightly build (cm11.0-14-pepper.zip). I've flashed boot.img successfully, but the result is the same (grey screen).
Any ideas what can be done to reanimate the device?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for suggestion!
I've already tried it and it does not help
1) Have you unlocked the bootloader?
2) In the terminal could you try issuing a "reboot recovery" command?
OR
Hold the back button while booting..
Same problem
I have exactly the same problem, also with Cyanogenmod 11.
I'm not able to get in android or recovery, maybe there is a way to fix this in fastboot? (That's the only solution I can think of)
Thanks for your suggestions!

Back is "software" button on sola. Nevertheless, I tried holding it but this did not helped.

Unfortunatelly adb is not able to connect to the device. Probably that's because the device does not not reach "far enough" in boot process.
Solution
What you've done wrong is to flash the boot image before the rom. As now the new boot images contain TWRP recovery, it loades after the rom is booted and the rom wont boot because of boot image mismatch. The solution is to use an older boot image which contains the CWM recovery which loads before the rom has even booted. Try THIS rom's boot image then flash the rom and then your new boot image.
HIt like if it helps :fingers-crossed: :highfive:

Thank you!
Using AOSX boot.img I was able to get into TWRP recovery. I did not flashed CM11 yet, it's late night right now here.
Another solution is to flash experimental v12 kernel (ensure your version of android matches it!). For me it was 4.0.
This solution was proposed by @pippoaacc here. So, all credits go to him. Also he was very nice to explain me more details regarding the solution (which were not obvious to me).
Using this one I'm able to boot my stock android and use it. However I can't flash any ROM doe to CWM recovery errors.
Anyway. There are at least 2 ways to resolve original problem (gray screen after flashing boot.img from CM11).
So, I believe this thead is solved.

My device is rooted and I can install all apps which need root acces.
I now installed Flashify and when I click on "Recovery image" or "Boot image" it says "Partition not found".
And since I cannot boot into recovery I cant install anything via zip files...
Would be nice if someone could help me.

use another method to boot into recovery
like ADB commands
Code:
adb reboot recovery
:good:
If your bootloader is locked, simply use [NUT]'s dual recovery.
If your bootloader is unlocked, install any 4.4.4 based kernel what has recovery built into it. I'm using AndroPlus as I'm running a 4.4.4 ROM as my main ROM.
Well there are severel apps which makes your device boot into recovery. None worked and I think the use the same method?

I'm assuming you are using [NUT]'s dual recovery? Did you install busybox before running the recovery installer? If not, install it, then run the recovery installer again. You will see the green LED when the device is showing the SONY logo before the waves bootlogo.

[Q] How to force a Z2 running CM12 into recovery mode if ROM wont boot?

I can't seem to be able to boot into recovery by continuously tapping the volume keys as instructed? Can someone help? How do I do it if my ROM wont boot (can't access reboot > recovery menu)

Thanks! couldn't find it, been googling for hours. I knew about the fastboot/adb but wanted hardware combo. Didn't have any idea about Camera button. I had tried the repeatedly tapping vol +/- when notification light goes on but wasn't working.

My understanding is that Z2 (and other Sony phones) are different from other devices in that there is no Recovery partition. So if you flash a custom kernel or a ROM that doesn't bundle recovery in the kernel you must flash the recovery again. Recovery lives on the BOOT partition along with the kernel? I am not 100% sure. But it seems its impossible to have a persistent recovery on Z2, it is lost every time you flash a new ROM or Kernel.

To gain a persistent recovery, one needs to flash a recovery to the fota partition as explained here: TWRP install details
I figured that it was an error with Infected's CM12 nightlies. I flashed the latest boot.img and I was sorted.

Don't use install img option on twrp it may not work always
Instead of that you can flash recovery using fastboot with "fastboot flash recovery (the name of recovery).img) command

I solved it, I first must install Repack boot with "fastboot flash boot ...img"
After install recovery with "Fastboot flash recovery ...img"
My error Because I should read this first...

Note that the Z2, like most other Sony devices does not have a proper bootable recovery. As such you have to install a kernel that includes a recovery with it. For a time I will try to continue to supply updated stock kernels repacked with TWRP in them. If you are running one of my kernels or have a custom ROM like OmniROM installed, you can install TWRP in the FOTAKernel partition to stay on the latest version of TWRP.

To install a stock kernel, boot the device into fastboot mode and then from your computer: fastboot flash boot path/to/filename.img

However is it true? With latest updates there was bootloader update which brings (or at least should as Sony said) /recovery partition (or more gives access to it, coz partitions was probably always there).
However how it exactly works? I always thought that onee flashed update with newest bootloader will leave new bootloader and this partition forever. But I got Z2 with .291, downgraded it to 4.4.2 for Root and TA backup and than tried to flash recovery to recovery partition, but got error: FAILED (data transfer failure (Unknown error)).
Does it mean that only on latest update(s) there is possibility to use this partition?
Never tried it on my ZU before. I just started form latest 5.1.1.
EDIT: OK, so what i assumed was right - on 6.0.1 I was able to flash the recovery to it's partition.
Now the problem is with booting into it. How? With Power + Vol- it still stright to boots to OS...
EDIT2: adb reboot recovery boots to different bootloader screen (Power+Vol- gives SONY screen and adb gives SONY + XPERIA screen.
However it still boots strght to Android...
Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I have 23.5.A.1.291 + unlocked bootloader + TWRP 3.0.2-0 (official) flashed with fastboot flash recovery img.
I'm 100% sure that SONY screen (w/o XPERIA) is the right one as I have identical one on my ZU when booting into bootloader-recovery mode. But why here it don't boot TWRP, but OS?
HELPPPP
Pleaseeeee tell me how did you flash twrp 3.0? I have tried almost everything it now seems impossible for me... Pleaseee helpp me T_T ... Thankk youuu
