hot spot and vpn - Ubuntu Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i see there is already ssh server available if you copy a key back into the device
but i can see good features like VPN and Hotspot are missing
i can see that vpn could be hard if not in RW mode
and hot spot just needs ap-hotspot installing
is there a way of seeing what apps are going to be available ?
a lot of handy tools on the droid which are missing from here that could be added and probably already available
nmap
virt-manager
to name a few, but handy for system admins to work on remote servers etc ...

What do you mean by "what apps are going to be available"? You'll never know what 3rd party devs will do.
However, these things won't be doable by 3rd party apps due to Ubuntu's apparmor security policies. These would have to be implemented in the system settings or as some system service as well.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/ReleaseNotes :good:
The following network features are not yet included in the Developer Preview:
Advanced Settings (e.g. Hidden SSIDs, Manual IP, VPN…)
Hot Spot/Tethering

@Geeks Empire Those release notes are quite outdates. Hidden SSIDs, for example, have been there for ages now.

Sprint Users - Remotely access your PC using LogMeIn

I know there is another guy here who managed to get it working via WinMo Remote Desktop.
For those of you who would like to be able to remotely access your PC via the Sprint Touch Pro, you can do so very easily using LogMeIn.
To get it to work:
1.) Sign up for an account at http://www.logmein.com if you haven't already done so.
2.) From the LogMeIn website, go to "My Computers", and set up all the comptuers you would like to access remotely.
Note: Each PC you want to access must be running the LogMeIn client software.
3.) From your Touch Pro, go to https://www.logmein.com/pda via POCKET INTERNET EXPLORER.
Note: What I found was attempting to configure the mobile LogMeIn via Opera was keeping me in an infinite loop of having to install the mobile client.
4.) Log in with the same account you use at the regular LogMeIn site.
5.) It's gonna prompt you to install a file. Click the link to install the little app onto your phone.
6.) Once that's done, click on the "Continue" link.
7.) Voila! Free and easy remote access to your PC via the Touch Pro.
Personally I bought a copy of rdm+. Logmein is a great company though.
Good info, thanks.
I have not looked into this yet, but I am guessing the best part about this software is that you don't have to open up ports on your firewall to allow RDP through? The software takes care of tunneling that for ya?
If so thats sweet.
A bit off topic but I use GoToAssist https://express.gotoassist.com/ and really like it. Don't have to worry about opening ports to control users desktops...sure beats trying to walk someone through simple fixes.

As the client is web based, it uses port 80 (http) for traffic, so you don't have to mess around with your router.
...warning -- as it is client based you have a running app on your host PC that is potentially a backdoor to your computer controlled by a third party.
Remote Desktop is your own locally controlled app where you are left in sole control. Just a fair warning.

LogMeIn has a number of security features...you can have a separate login password for each computer you access, as well as a number of other little things you can do for your personal comfort.
LogMeIn is a proven app that's been around forever. Alot of people use it.
Just provided a fair warning -- a third party (beyond your control) ultimately controls the remote desktop access to your computer. I'm not knocking them -- just stating non-opinionated reality. It's up to users to trust that company and its security.
Now for my opinion: personally, I much prefer using a free DNS service to have an easy link to my home IP and then personally configure my own router and Remote Desktop app. It's then only me and the OS that open up security threats. Taking easier routes such as Logmein do increase threats. Cost and balance. It's up to each-their-own to decide.
...beyond that, why the Sprint specific title for this thread?
Any internet enabled WM device can use logmein.
There are many others carriers than just Sprint who have released the CDMA Raphael

I did it as a step-by-step for the Sprint Touch Pro users out there. There weren't any threads in the Raphael forum explaining how to get it done.

Again, you posted nothing that is Sprint nor CDMA Raphael specific.
Except for the Opera issues -- common to all Diamond and Raphaels -- nothing you presented excludes other carriers and WM phones. So, if you're presenting info, why limit it to only your carrier?

By posting it here, those that are in this forum could search for it. It's not Sprint-specific per-se, but it is available here for those searching the Raphael CDMA forum for remote access.
Keystone, you're threadjacking at this point. If you have nothing of value to add to this thread, then stay away and move on.
Because one may only be familiar with their carrier it's silly to initiate discussion just to that carrier when there is no reason to do so. Doing so just adds to potential confusion -- particularly to those doing a forum search and glancing at thread titles. Too often I see replies in such threads with the likes of 'must I be on Sprint?' and 'will this work for me'? Or people will just skip over your thread and assume that it's nothing to do with them. It's just best to keep things simple and accurate and avoid going out of the way to exclude others.
The value that I added to this thread was to correctly ellaborate that this software is applicable to all users and carriers rather than your implication that it's for those on Sprint -- as retained in your thread title.
mycuilito, I am sorry that I have offended you -- it was not my intention.

[SUGGESTIONS][CHEFS] To chefs offering adblock for /etc/hosts

I was debugging on the phone, and all of a sudden I saw something that caught my eye:
Code:
D/FlurryAgent( 5172): Sending report to: http://data.flurry.com/aar.do
D/FlurryAgent( 5172): Report successful
I've checked the list of applications that I have installed (rename .apk to .zip and then use Total Commander to search for FlurryAgent within the archives) and I was almost shocked to see how many are containing a reference to the agent (within their classes.dex file).
I suspect that it wasn't put there for nothing ...
User britoso has provided a workaround here: you need to add three lines to /etc/hosts.
Chefs, please make sure your updates are including those three lines
PS: None of the applications asked if its ok to send usage data to analytics company flurry.com ...

There are *.flurry entries in the Adfree hosts file.
Ok, they said Flurry Analytics is to improve their apps. But, location? Is that really necessary? Glad I have Adfree installed.
Yea BC someone trying to steal/gain malicious information from u would go through the effort/be stupid enough to put evidence of it on logcat lol... come on ppl think. I mean I understand why this posted n more power to u. But if your THAT worried u need to be watching the traffic that doesn't broadcast it to yourself, not the traffic that does lol.
My 2 cents, take it for w/e its worth lol.

In my Adblock list I only found www.flurry.com, I'm still using V3.6 from wolf.
I guess I need a kernel with droid wall - and I will only allow certain applications to pass through.
And if some app requires internet connection and it doesn't tell me why beforehand, tough luck.

i recommend LBE Privacy Guard as well. It needs ONLY root and it allows you to totally take control over your apps' permissions

Maybe you head me thinking loud 6 weeks after starting this app: "i will release today, if there are still error, i'll fix them later"
Am I correct in assuming this is not open source?
I got a question about incoming/outgoing connections, maybe somone else want to know:
Incoming connections are used by less than 1% of all apps. This is used if the app is a "server", like BubbleUPnP. So most time incoming conections could be blocked, i think for mobile network 100%.
An outgoing connection is like a phone call: You call someone (outgoing connection), and can talk (send "data") and hear (receive "data")
Wifi Internet and Network:
If you want to control eg your local tv-receiver, xbmc device or avm router (with FreetzMobil), only connections to the local network are required. This prevents app to send data to the internet.
The "local network" are all "private" IPv4 and IPv6, they will not be forwarded by internet routers. Additionally, if you use "public" IPs they are local if it is in the same subnet as a ip of your device. Uncommon for IPv4 usage, but public IPv6 are the common usage (public IPv6 for every device)

I took this mod for a quick test drive, a little feedback:
-Is it not possible to restrict kernel?
-Could it be that apps that use native libraries to connect to the internet cannot be restricted? Firefox and Mega (both use native libraries) were able to connect even when completely restricted.
Also a little cosmetic issue com.android.process.gapps showed completely green at all times. However restrictions were applied properly

Yes, see OP: "Limitiation: ... no native binaries." This is because the design of Xposed
Isn't it "com.google.process.gapps"? Onyl this one app has the wrong colors? Has it a green dot for "trusted app"? What did you configured for it?
Yes I meant com.google....
I set it from template to custom, blocked everything, however in the app overview it still showed as all green. When it was restricted GCM was blocked and the log showed blocked connections to mtalk.google.com:5228. Then I unrestricted outgoing mobile and wifi and GCM was available and the log correctly showed allowed connections but the colors in the app overview didn't change

Also 1 more questions. Do you see any problem running this along side AFWall?
The bug affects any app that starts end ends with <>. <android.media> and <org.mozilla.firefox.sharedid> also always revert back to displaying completely green once the app is reloaded

No, should work without problems. The one created iptables rules other hooks the connection methods - if one fails, the other does it

The "<>" entries are not real apps (.apks) with a package name, they are uids. At app start i load all installed apps with internet-permission and hide apps which are no more installed / have not any longer the permissions -> the uid items are not in the list of installed apps (obviously)
Will be fixed in next release
EDIT: Uploaded
This is awesome ?
A few questions:
- is there a way to edit template? I couldn't find it anywhere in settings- am I missing something?
- Can you add multiple selection? For example, someone has lots of apps and wants to block roaming to them etc. etc. without having to change it manually for each app.
- filtering or sorting apps? perhaps something simple like the way afwall , or a more thorough filter like XPrivacy has?

Nice feature !
I dry tested this app (i.e. not checked in the Xposed module on my device) and already saw that the VPN was missing. Now I use AFWall+ which is good and has more profiles. I block all Google apps with it with a 'limited internet' profile and every time I download something from Play, I load another profile which allows 'Google Play services' and 'Google Play store' internet connection and after download/update I revert to 'Limited internet'.
On my Mac I have 'Little Snitch' firewall which has the ability to let it prompt for certain apps which I don't want to be connected permanently (such as the Mac App Store), but only when I do e.g. an OSX update. In that case I let it prompt and say 'only this time'.
A similar approach on LightingWall should be very welcome. E.g. a notification that the Play store wants to connect with internet and when one wants to download / update an app, say 'only this time' and not permanently.

Xprivacy implements a similar thing, allowing the user to be informed when one of the restrictions are asking for access of that permission, including internet permissions(no distiction between lan or vpn), i would also welcome an on demand prompt feature for this app, its one faeture i wished afwall had, but believe it cant because of the nature of iptables i believe,
Saying that im also kinda worried that this might conflict, two apps essentially fighting for control to "pause" the system, hope im wrong, maybe if the two devs of the two respective apps co-orporated in implementation,it might be resolved, if there is an issue, i dont know........... but im getting ahead of myself here, defim has not even stated that he'll implement this, still, no harm in discussing possibilities, slim or not
@banderos101 @mermaidkillerIf you want to be informed if an app is allowed or denied to access some hosts, you could get it with Tasker. Just with a simple message box or more enhanced things Tasker can do. It should not be a problem using this app wiht Xprivacy, AFwal etc. If you block a connection with one app, it could be that the others can't see/log it. This depends on the order of the apps, An iptables firewall should be the last the connection is passing.
A per host filter is not planned, if you want to stop connection to some (tracking, malwar, adware) hosts a hosts file filter could be used, like my UnbelovedHosts

Too big a risk to take for security software like this. Post your work up on Github under a reasonable license.
I'm not seeing a big advantage over the GPL AFWall+ anyway.

I would be very interested for osx compatibility.
Thanks. Been waiting for an app like this. My Norton also said it was a virus. On the other hand, I have multiple network cards because I use virtual machines and the program obtains the ip of those vm network, is there a way to change this?
Looks similar to pushbullet.
This does seem better for android emulation as copy paste is very clunky at the best of times.
it is a false positve virus guys that is the way it was just simply put it on the exclusion list

Would love to see Os x integration, left windows 2 years ago and haven't looked back since. Sounds like a great module.
I always get same page, regardless of what i open in Chrome/Youtube.
These are steps i took:
- enabled module in Xposed Installer and restarted
- installed and started PC app
- typed IP and saved in Android app
- alowed both .exe files through firewall
- started service on PC
Im using N9005 Note 3 with TouchWiz. Page i get on double click is page i open frequently on phone. Devices are on same WiFi.

Wonderful idea! However I'm on OSX so I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer to see if it's worthwhile. Meanwhile I can test things for you during my free time.

What are your must-have/can't live without apps?

Aside from games, which apps can you not live without on your phone/tablet? I have numerous apps I use every day without fail...Some before I even get out of bed.
First port of call is always Gmail, quickly followed by a scan of Google+, Facebook and Twitter
Facebook, Twitter, and in China WeChat is the most popular, Sina Weibo is similar to Twitter (would be daily, but I'm not such an addict that I can't wait to get to my PC)
My favorite todo list manager is AnyDO and I use both the Android app and Chrome extension to manage my deadlines
Chrome, obviously The big daily apps for me...
There are several others that I frequently use, but are not quite daily for me.
Infrequently used, but occasionally invaluable
Quora for Q&A, read millions of fascinating answers about every subject
italki for language learning, communicate with people all around the world and learning by the way
I love having an Android phone. I would feel lost without it. So.... What are your must-have/can't live without apps?

Adguard, Lastpass and Outlook. For me these are the top three most important app right now.
NoRoot Data Firewall. Its ability to block hosts, block IP, block apps, set DNS, and block image sistem wide in one VPN service is unmatched yet. That's important because Android can activate only one VPN. Need update though.

I found Lastpass on Google Play, it is really an amazing app, thanks for your recommendation:highfive:
The Adguard is the exact app name? I cannot search it on GP... The Ads always annoy me, I think I need one this app

No problem
And yea, Adguard is the exact name. But the one you'll find on play store isn't the best version.
Download it from their official website.... https://adguard.com/en/adguard-android/install.html
You can also find it here on xda... http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/adguard-ad-blocker-doesnt-require-root-t2958895/
Lastpass also has a desktop chrome extension. And your data is synced for free. So any login details you save on your phone will be available on your computer and vice versa.
Adguard too is available for your computer (if you're interested).
And since you use fb, g+ and twitter, give reddit a try, if you haven't already. You can directly visit their website @ reddit.com or you can just use their app (named Reddit on play store). At first it might seem overwhelming but trust me, you're going to get addicted.
APP2SD for low internal memory problems and xposed module PREVENT RUNNING..and AMPLIFY for battery save.

\^o^/ I got it and had a try, really a great job! And are you using any office apps for Android, to edit some office documents on the phone such as word/excel/pdf? This is my urgent need
Exposed modules:
Android n-ify
Sudo hide
X blasttools
Gravity box
Apm+
Brightness tweak
Apart from these modules are my daily use apps like whatsapp, facebook, instagram, hike and ucbrowser
My other favourite apps are
Tapet- for custom wallpaper
Camscanner- to improve document picture quality
Chromma keyboard- best keyboard according to me
Live boot- for boot animation
Tunnel bear- best vpn of my choice
Regards milkyway3

:highfive: The developer of Prevent Running comes from China, I used to use it very often, and the Greenify is also awesome.
It seems that the 2SD is also available to hide apps, is an app manager, NICE!

The xposed modules you recommended are also my frequently used...
The Camscanner is just the exactly what I am searching for, thanks a lot!
I should have a try on Tunnel bear, several VPN apps I used almost have the bad connection...

Yep. I use Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Powerpoint for that. I've never tried anything else. Microsoft products worked really well for me. And so I stuck with them.
Btw I sent you a PM. Do check it
