just another question. I tried to update my phone via the RUU file that i thought was the correct one on the HTC website. Long story short it said that the RUU was the wrong type and never continued. I was hoping to update the software from 1.29.161.2 to something higher - think the ruu contained software level 3+ How do i go about this? The phone is an A3UL if that helps?

Toward the bottom of the first post it'll give a link for a ruu. You need to relock your phone by putting it in fastboot then enter the command given. The rest is pretty easy, just run the ruu, follow directions and let it finish.
This wipes it so make a backup. Now you need to unlock it again and root. Just use the same unlock token you got from HTC.

[Q] Unable to return Rezound to stock using RUU

Hi everyone,
I've found the information in these forums to be very helpful and have never posted on anything before, but I have a question that I'm not finding a good answer for.
I successfully unlocked my bootloader and rooted last night and am now running scrosler's CleanROM. However I want to return to stock using the RUU from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1338916
When I run the RUU I am getting stuck at the HTC recovery screen, and the windows installer tells me that the RUU is not compatible. I tried extracting the rom.zip, renamed it to PH98IMG.zip, copied it to the SDcard and load it in HBOOT, but it won't work either.
Any ideas? I mainly just want to make sure I have a working method to return to stock just in case I accidentally brick the phone at some point, but otherwise I'm good for now.
You run the ruu from your pc if it's like other htcs

You need to have a recovery backup. Then you can always go back.

Neither of these answers attempt to address the issue of why the RUU doesn't work.
Have you tried both?

Here's a more specific account of what happens when I run the RUU.
I get the progress bar that says "Sending......." but then after a few seconds I get the following error:
Error [155] unknown error
The ROM Update Utility cannot update your Android phone
Please get the correct ROM Update Utility and try again
I've spent the last hour Googling this error and have found that it is a known error with other HTC devices but can't find any info on the Rezound.
Found this helpful thread for a similar issue with the Desire:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029401
Tried starting the RUU with the phone already in fastboot but that didn't change anything.
What does it do when you copy the zip to the sd card and run it?

I get the little progress bar in the upper right corner of HBOOT that shows it is reading the file, however it doesn't present me with the option to flash it. Instead it just skips to the HBOOT menu.

Interesting, I wonder if anyone has ran it this ruu successfully
Solved
Figured it out. On a hunch I re-locked the bootloader and tried running the RUU using the Windows installer and it worked. It must be some sort of security check thing. I'll just unlock the bootloader again after it's done flashing. It might be good for someone with more seniority on the forum to make this information more visible in case anyone else runs into this issue.

Any idea on how to get the phone to relock if "fastboot oem lock" goes to "waiting for device" without responding?
I'm in a similar situation, but I cannot seem to get my phone to relock.
Nevermind. I forgot to get into bootloader mode via adb.

Similar thing happened to me. I have hboot 1.15. I relocked the the phone ran the RUU. Phone booted up normal with the everything stock. I then took the OTA and when it rebooted it was updating then it rebooted and the phone never turned on again. I sent it to HTC for warranty. They will get it tuesday. I'll see how this goes.
Okay guys... Enough with the flaming. If you can help, post! If not, don't. Grow up. It was posted in the wrong section. Use the report button in the upper-right corner of the post and report it.
Now, let me see if I can actually help you.
You're getting this error because you're trying to flash an older RUU on the phone than what's already on there. You'll need to flash the same RUU version or higher. If you took the latest OTA update, there may not be one available yet. I'd suggest you go through the HTCDev unlock again until that RUU makes it to the internet.
Team Nocturnal posted a couple of the older RUU versions.

Hi there jrgalioto. Can you do me a favor, and boot into your bootloader for me? I'd like you to check the green text.
What Radio version does it say you have?
Also, if you can connect the phone up to your computer and run the fastboot command (in FASTBOOT USB mode):
Code:
fastboot getvar mainver
What number comes back? (If you can't run the command, don't worry about it)
---
If I might ask, why did you relock the phone?
---
I'm looking into trying to get you a link to a current RUU. One has been posted, but I can't access it because of Filefactory's restrictions. Hopefully somebody will post a mirror to the download soon.

I relocked because I needed to bring it back to Sprint for service, so I needed to unroot it, because I wasn't receiving data to it. But I got it figured out now. I was able to unlock the bootloader again and my recovery was still there. So i reflashed a custom ROM, so I at least had something on my phone. When I called Sprint, I told them it was not a phone issue, they updated my username in the system, then I was able to ##72786# to get the hands free activation to complete without error 1012. So I am now back in business. However, If I ever do have to unroot again, I will be in the same boat.

I even gave instructions on what they need to do should they completely ruin the file tree, when have you seen anyone completely destroy the internal memory lol

My phone won't respond to the volume down and power button either.

[Q] HELP! I can't figure out how to get back to a stock ROM!

I should never have flashed my Evo 3D. I had no experience, but a buddy of mine talked me into it. It worked fine for a good while, but now...it just reboots itself randomly, and then freezes during the boot screen. I have to pull the battery to reset. I also can't use TONS of apps that I'd really like to have. Smart Glass, My Xbox 360, Bad Piggies, etc...
Anyway, I don't even know what H-Boot is, or what version I'm on. This is all the info I have...
Android Version: 2,3,4
HTC Sense Version: 3.0
Software Number: 2.08.651.2
MOD Version: InfectedROM_Synergy-3dvo_RLS-1 (NIGHTLY)
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.13-ck3+
All I want to do is go back to a stock Sprint ROM. I'd like to get the latest OTA if possible. I tried that as well, but it just searches forever. I let it go overnight once, and woke up 9 hrs later, and the thingy was still spinning.
Anyway... Any help would be MUCH APPRECIATED! This thing is driving me crazy. I'll be getting a Note II soon, but I can't take this ROM anymore,
-B
EDIT: Almost forgot... It isn't that I haven't tried anything. I grabbed a Stock ROM off of PPCGeeks, and connected my 3vo to my laptop. I ran the .exe, but it said it failed. I also got a different ROM, put it on the ROOT of my SD Card, navigated to the .zip in Recovery, and initiated a flash. Every attempt ended with the phone rebooting with the same old Synergy ROM. Once booted, I got a bunch of pop-up messages saying that various programs weren't able to run, or something like that. However, these programs included Sense, Phone, etc...

Follow this guide through Step1 and you will be 100% stock on the current Sprint ICS ROM. If any of the apps you want to run require root then you can complete Step2 as well. Since Step3 is for gaining S-OFF I doubt that you would need to do that in your situation.

THANKS! I'll give it a shot, and report back. I REALLY appreciate the help, good sir.
UPDATE: Yup...this is exactly what I did last night. All that happens is that it tells me it failed, and then reboots back to how it was. I just read a troubleshooting section, and it says to check if the bootloader is unlocked, and that if it is (via HTCDev) that it will stop this method from working. I'm pretty sure this is what's messing this up for me. However, they give no explanation as to how someone can change this. I don't even know where to look to make sure it's locked...

I just tried reading a tut, but it doesn't even say how to do this, and it also says that if it isn't done correctly, it will brick my phone. He says there is never a reason to go back to 'stock'. Not sure what all that is about. Do I need to download another file for this?

Well, the thing is... I understand everything but re-locking this boot loader. That's all I have to do for this to work, but I just don't understand that thread at all. It's just gibberish to me. You need to download the rootevo3dnew.zip attached in the link you posted above. Then extract it somewhere. If you are using win xp open cmd and navigate to that folder in cmd. If you are using newer version of windows then hold shift and right click the folder which you just extracted and click "open command window here." and then connect phone in fastboot mode and type the "fastboot oem lock". Then reboot the bootloader, you will re locked instead of unlocked at the top. Now you can run the ruu.
Or hit me up on gtalk when you have 20-30 mins time, i will guide you.

Okay so i downloaded and unzipped, The instructions on the thread are very vague
So I think i need to use a backdoor or something cause I can't get my phone to boot into android
Quote:
Q: But what if I can't get into Android?? Surely there is something I can do!?
A: Yes, I designed a "backdoor" to allow you into VipeRUU. However, BE CAREFUL! This skips important checks that VipeRUU does when it start (most importantly, if your phone really is an EVO 4G LTE!) but it will allow you to do this procedure from the bootloader. All you have to do is create a text file in the "files" folder called "bypass.txt" and then start the program. You'll be alerted with a few warnings when doing this.
Also do I need to have the phone plugged into the computer or something. I am so sorry but I am very lost

I've never done this process myself, but I'll do my best to help you.
First: reboot into your bootloader, Hold down power key with volume down key until it reboots into the screen where you listed all that information. It should have a white bacground.
Second: Naviagte to fastboot and hit the pwoerkey
Third: Connect computer to phone with usb
Fourth: create a blank bypass.txt file and place into the file named "file" from the zip you downloaded.
Fifth: Run ViperRUU and select whichever option you need.

I'm sure I do since i'm the administrator, I have no idea about the drivers. The ones in the files folder I installed those I think
I am so sorry for all the trouble I really appreciate your help
Here is the link to the latest RUU I wouldn't mess with VipeRUU if you are not sure what you are doing.

Do what BD619 says. I had hoped ViperRUU would work, but the stock HTC one is much easier to use and operate. Also I usually use Ubuntu in these situations due to how much easier it is to work things in Terminal than it is to use Window's command prompt. Just a thought in case you ever need to do something fastboot related in the future.

VipeRUU will work fine but he's still new this kind of stuff it can be confusing. It took me a couple tries to get it to work the first time I used it.

No matter what it's a bad sign if you need to RUU. Definitely something I never want to do. Means something major screwed up lol. Yeah I was gonna give him the regular HTC one until I read all the paranoid stuff the ViperRUU posted in his thread.

After the RUU finishes you will be 100% stock except for S-OFF...which I would leave in case you catch the bug and wanna start modding your phone in the future

Help recover my Evo 4G LTE

I would like to start out with saying that I am not new to rooting/roms but a lot has changed since I went to iOS. I have TWRP accessible and I can push files to my /sdcard/
I have tried several rooms but all of them fail to install.
Can someone please tell me the steps I need to take to go back to either stock or have another ROM working? (RUU fails as well, however it does detect the phone)
Any help is appreciated and trust me I spent hours reading threads so not just posting this for an easy way out.

First, this should probably be in the Q&A section
Second, gonna need WAY more info about your phone. I assume you're rooted? S-off or S-on? What hboot version are you on? What version of TWRP are you currently using? What ROM are you on now? What RUU are you trying to use? Gonna have to give a little bit for us to work with.
Edit: Your signature also says you have the Evo Shift? Are you on the write forum?

I apologize for posting this in the wrong forum, like I was saying I haven't been here in a while and signature is outdated by about 6 years
Heres the info
TWRP v2.7.1.0
S-ON
HBOOT-2.10.0000
RADIO-1.13.11.1105
I had the last leaked RUU installed before I attempted flashing a custom ROM
Thank you for your reply!

Is your goal to flash another ROM or to go back to stock?
If you're going to be trying to flash another ROM I'd highly recommend running rumrunner and getting s-off. Otherwise there are a lot of hoops you'll need to jump through in order to flash ROMs (for starters, you'll need to flash the kernel separately).

Whichever one is faster, I just want the phone up and running again.
So it's not running at all now? I'm assuming you can boot into bootloader and recovery but nothing else, right? You can run an RUU while in fastboot if I recall, which will give you at least a usable phone. That's also probably the fastest thing to do.
After that I'd highly recommend using rumrunner to get s-off. Otherwise flashing new ROMs will be a bear.

RUU fails with errors and it gets stuck at "HTC" screen
Do you have HTC Sync installed on your computer?

Ah, I think something else made me delete it.
That'll do it. You need to have HTC Sync and all of the necessary drivers to run the RUU

D'oh! I bet your bootloader is still unlocked. It needs to be relocked before running the RUU.
Fastboot command 'fastboot oem lock' ought to do the trick.
