Sometimes you are away from a charger and want to conserve what you have left, or are trying to run a resource heavy app without glitches (satnav) or trying to get a big update/download faster.
I thought we could post tips that either help with speed of the device or with saving battery - particularly if you know of apps or settings that slow the running down or eat battery.
I know these are quite obvious but I'll list some anyway to get us started
Turn these off for extra speed and batt :
Wireless General
GPS (you can leave location by network on for most stuff like weather apps)
Wifi - turning it off while you're out and about saves lots o batt. I also keep network notification off completely unless I'm in a new location looking for a wifi fix.
Bluetooth - set for off and undiscoverable
Mobile network - Set it to 2G for a big boost in battery life (and I've found, if the 3G is rubbish - I know, obvious, but I recently spent 20 mins moaning of no signal at all to send a tx at a gig, then realised I could flick to 2G and was away!!)
Data Sync
Google - You can turn of Auto sync and just sync manually when you choose
Background Data - Turning this off gives a huge battery boost, but gmail won't arrive in real time, so if you're expecting important mail don't turn it off.
On the sync option, if you know contacts and calendar are not changing that often you can uncheck these and sync manually every now and then
Apps that use Data Sync
Weather - check how often the app refreshes and set it to a longer time - some weather apps are by default set to refresh every 30 mins and this might not be needed most of the time.
Twitter and Facebook widgets and apps - again check the refresh periods, also notifications will Use batt more than no notifications.
Same probably applies for Exchange Sync but I don't use it.
Sound/Display - these things will save batt when you need it.
I think having Ring AND vibe will be more batt intensive, so maybe knock off the vibrate when you want to save battery
Keep Brightness low and lower screen timeout.
Turn off Auto rotation and animations and Notification Flash
Turning keypad tones off etc will save a bit too. It all adds up.
Turning Off TouchFLO
When running CoPilot, it helps to turn off wifi and some have reported that if you can toggle the Sense UI to the ordinary Android 3 screen home this helps too (Tho I've personally not had problems) To turn off Sense UI or Touchflo 7Screen home, you need to first go to settings-applications-manage applications and look for TouchFLO then clear defaults. After this, when you go to home, you'll be offered a choice of home or TouchFlo. To toggle back to Touchflo, press the home button again. To return it to default, just check the Use by default for this action, and then make your choice.

Is there a widget to switch from 3G to 2G?
no, that is not a setting that can be done on a widget. all the ones that are around and claim to do it just jump you straight into mobile settings so you can toggle it yourself in two clicks instead of four....
But there is the Mobile Network one - HTC built in - when that is turned off, you can still get calls, and send txts. I use this toggle to do that - also can you not set a shortcut to do 3g to 2g only using bettercut? I'm sure you can, because you have that option in settings and bettercut can make a shortcut to any settings toggle.

Edit - Bettercut doesn't work with Hero Well, certainly not for creating and adding a shortcut to a system setting - will let the devs know...
Is it my imagination or does having the people widget on a home screen makes the device a little sluggish?
Is anyone else using touchdown? Not sure if that is slowing my device down and using battery a lot too?
Toggle Settings is a good app for controlling Daisys suggestions above, taskiller or Advanced Task Manager are essential for closing unwanted apps.
Couple of notes about apps that close stuff down like Taskiller and Task Manager - they can slow your fone down immediately after an end all, as the apps that need to run like TouchFlo have to restart - which they do, all by themselves - but it makes the fone prone to laggyness and force closing if you try to open stuff straight after.
If you get one that allows exclusions (I know advanced Task Manager does but dunno on others) then exclude TouchFLO and you'll get less proba after close all.
Also there were reports that one of the Taskiller apps messed with the long press home functions. Not sure on this tho...

With Taskkiller you also have the option to exclude programs. It also has a widget you can tap to close all (except the ignored programs) The free version only allows two apps to be ignored. Exclude TouchFlo is a good suggestion.

Try TaskPanel, it's free and doesn't seem to have any restrictions in its exclude list. You can also add a memory threshold when TaskPanel should automatically kill applications (configured through a separate list). And finally, it registers itself as an ongoing task and starts up automatically.
TaskPanel ist great... Thanks for that Tip. Have it running in the Background and now it Kills processes that are not in my Exclude List everytime the RAM goes below 50Meg.

Surely that disables all the sync services etc which is really what the phone is all about!
Also the Market won't work unless background data is enabled... It will save battery but a said, many services won't work unless you update manually.
I switched this off when in France so I didn't eat up my roaming data bundle.

Ive also noticed this also with the people widget after i removed it as well as the Clock # 8 it severely reduced the lagginess of my Hero

If you're looking for a good way to save battery power without having to turn wifi on and off manually, check out "Y5 battery saver"
Y5 - Battery Saver is an AndroidTM application which saves your battery by turning the Wifi off in locations where you have never been connected before. The application turns Wifi back on when you are back to known location. It will remember the locations automatically. All you have to do is turn the Wifi on and connect to the known Wifi network for the first time
Really cool, and works like a charm. Ok, you need to have your GPS turned on, but at least that one is useful everywhere you are (except inside buildings, fair enough)... whereas wifi isn't. Furthermore, wifi uses up more battery than GPS.
Concerning Advanced Task Killer (awesome!), you might want to check out this thread if you're sick of having to restart your phone each time you have to sync. In a few words: always put HTC sync in the Ignore list of the program. Unchecking it won't do.

Stop using Peep (set it all to manual update), remove the widget and start using Twidroid.
As well as a huge reduction in battery draw, you'll find your Hero is far more responsive than is ever was before.
The last few days my Hero has not been sluggish and the battery life has increased dramatically. Set to 30 mins update just like Peep was.
Here's my tip, that works really well, for me. I've tried a myriad of task managers, but finally settled for TaskPanel. It doesn't really matter what you use, I suppose, but I found it to be one of the clearest. Furthermore, advanced task killer's and taskillers "kill all" commands seemed to randomly kill the TouchFlo process as well, even though it was "ignored"...
I've come to the conclusion that cpu load rarely is a problem on this phone (in terms of finding a reason to possible lag), unless you are watching videos (which you probably won't, since it appears to be impossible to encode videos so they don't at least slow down a bit every five seconds) or listening to music.
Instead it's the amount of memory you have free for apps to use. I have no idea why, since I also live by the credo "memory free is memory wasted", so ideally my phone would have 5 megs of ram free and everything would work great. Now for some reason, my Hero desktop starts to lag substantially (as well as other gui-elements, such as long scrolling lists) whenever my memory goes below 40 megs.
I always hated the "favourite people" widget by Htc, so I closed it day one. Maybe that's why my htc experience has been pretty positive. I also closed the desktop widgets for SMS-messages and Mail, since they can't show MMS:es or HTML-mail and since they are both ridiculously slow at flicking from one message to the next. I also threw away the novelty clocks by Htc, since they animate too often and that slows down the interface while they are moving. Instead I opted for the iPhone-like clock "digital clock widget". Just don't force kill it, since it will stop updating and you will be stuck with a beautiful clock that shows the right time once every day.
So basically, my formula for a fluid hero experience is:
* Check your free memory with TaskPanel every now and then. If it goes below 50, prepare for slowdown. If it goes below 40, go on a killingspree.
* Register TaskPanel as an "ongoing service", so it shows up in your notification drawer. Now, if you can see your notification drawer (which you can't in the browser), then instead of clicking home to close stuff, open TaskPanel (or whatever) and kill the app you are about to stop using.
* With multitasking comes responsibility. Odds are, if you ever owned an iPhone, this is something you were *****in and moanin about. "Gimme multitasking, gimme!". Well now you've got it and so, learn to use it. Everything that is slow, badly programmed or a resource hog has gotta go, unless you really really need it. Beautiful clock animating slowly? Too bad! Ditch it.
Somebody said Android wold be very good at managing resources by itself and that sounds reasonable. However, I read numerous comments about people finding this to not be the case. Maybe in version 2.0. But for now I'm stuck killing of processes myself. It works for me and makes my UI snappy. And I can keep 3-5 apps running at the same time (that are my own choices, not mandatory apps that come with the UI) without problem. I regularly have babbler, androidirc, taskpanel, market, ebuddy, redditisfun running at the same time without problem. Just kill off apps you are not going to use for a long time.
Ok, sorry to be rambling, but this is my take on the situation. It might get resolved with the Hero update or with the 2.0 version of Android. Don't know, but until then, we need some tools and wild speculation won't solve anything. If you made it through the whole message, I would appreciate your comments - especially any positive experiences you have from "letting Android do its own cleaning". It sounds a little fishy that it would be bad a first, but after about a week, things will get really snappy? What if I boot my phone? Will I have to wait a week again for things to become fast?

turning off allmost every things,then what reson to have a smart phone and spend 600$ for the device better, turn off your hero and keep in the pocket and turn it back on to use...keep in pocket with power off till next use.this is not the sulution .turning off everythings ........rether go with motorola razer v3.
I still don't see the point of using task managers and killing tasks. I just let the OS manage everything for me.
My Hero run very well indeed since I worked out that Peep was a real battery and resource hog.
I've just been for a 4 mile walk and used My Tracks to track the walk, Twidroid, Browser hot linked from tweets in Twidroid, answered a phone call and responded to a number of texts.
Looked at My Tracks a number of times to see what it was doing and to look at the satellite map. I like to point out things on the phone screen to the kids that they can see in real life - geeky but they think its cool.
Kept checking on how fast we were walking etc...
So screen was active quite a bit.
All over the space of 1hr 15mins with the GPS running all the time.
Hero never lagged once, battery used was around 10% (at a guess, maybe 12%).
Overall very impressed.

newbee here. I have acquire a sansung galaxy S2, and have a lot of fun with it.
trouble started when it rebooted at night. I figured out that some update or application crashes were the cause of it.
I think i rid of most of the issues, and got it pretty stable.
To avoid future complication, I even rid of the startup sound, but I can not rid off the vibration (especially the one when shutting down....)
I think it is part of the basic settings, and I did a lot of researches... no luck
Apps like Silent boot would not work either....
Do anyone know if it's even possible ?
If impossible, is ICS having the same issue, or can this be tuned ?
(i just can't believe no one thought of making that optional ...)

I'm on ICS and don't have that. It is part of system settings - sound. It usually is affected by the mode you have your phone set to (like if you have sound set to Sound and Vibrate or just Vibrate, etc). Try changing to just sound and see if that stops it from vibrating (or just silent mode with no vibrate).
Can also try to untick Vibrate on screen tap.
ICS is sweet... can't go back to GB... what you waiting for?!

note: Official Samsung ICS for Unlocked Phones will come soon... unless there is a safe ROM and method to install it. For now I would concentrate on my Vibration issue.
Firstly, be patient. People will try to help you, doesn't mean the first answer fixes your problem.
As I stated... ICS does not have this problem. Phone makes no sound and no vibrate, if you set it that way on ICS.
How about give us more information. You said you're rooted but on GB. Are you using any different type of kernel other than stock? Like Siyah 2.xx?
As the filesystem where you can doodle with removing vibrations... I will leave someone with more experience to deal with that (even if I know the path)... in case I advise you something that can screw things up after.
*you might want to reset the phone - as the system notification/vibration settings should have done the trick.

I upgraded to 4 versions of ICS.
Each one of them did not correct the issue : it still vibrate when shutting down the phone. (darkyrom, OCA, Pure and a "4.0.4" version having a clever 3 way option to launch (Nova, TW and Apex)).
I did not reset the settings yet but I will give it a go.

That's a very strange bug then. The settings to control that though, is not with the launchers but with System Settings.
Maybe try this:
System Settings - Volume <inside there you have 4 settings. Try changing System to very low or all the way off. Then go to the whatever mode you have it set to (like Silent Mode or whatever)... and select Mute.
Then the lower categories of System... uncheck all of them: Keytones, Touch sounds, Screen lock sound, Vibrate on screen tap.
See if that works. If it does, then can narrow it down to one of those settings.

The simplest things are not always obvious to the common....
It works, the vibration disappeared when /SOUNDS/VIBRATION SETTINGS/Vibrate on touch was set to the lowest. Meantime, the little vibration at startup disappeared as well. Now the phone can crash, update and reboot at night without waking me up ! .. a good logcat reader (just in case) running in background will help cleaning up when some error occurs....

I have chinese copy of Nexus One phone, android 2.2.1 and I don`t have VIBRATION SETTINGS tab in my menu, I can only turn vibrate on and off,
and I don`t have SOUNDS on SETINGS, I enter in AUDIO PROFILES to menage vibration,
how to turn off vibration on power on and off?
I am currently running rooted MJ7 (Verizon Galaxy S4) and have window animation scale, transition animation scale, and animation duration scale all turned off in developer options. I hoped that this would reduce screen and lock screen lag, however, I am getting pretty pissed about waking my phone and have to wait for 10-15 seconds for any touch response. This happens about once or twice an hour. It also occurs every so often once the screen unlocks and I will wait 10-15 seconds for anything but the wallpaper to load... I have hard reset multiple times hoping to clear the issue. I use zero widgets to avoid load time (however the hardware in this phone should be able to handle pretty damn much anything), and I manually clear cache and kill apps regularly....Nothing has helped... Any ideas or anyone else experiencing this?

Do you have lock screen effects turned off (light and water)? Turning those off really helped with the stutter I used to get when unlocking. It wasn't nearly as bad as what you're describing though... are you running any performance tweaks? Any 3rd party apps that change system behavior? I would freeze any non-stock apps and mods for a day and see if you still get it.

Haha, I actually feel quite noob at this point. Immediately after creating this post I went through my running applications in rom toolbox and noticed one little thing... There was a system cleanup tool running a total clean at every system lock, thus killing all running/background apps. The lag was simply the phone restarting the necessary applications... After eliminating this procedure I no longer experience the severity of lag. Whoops.

Got the OTA update to L on my 6833. Yes, it has made the already smooth animation slightly smoother but otherwise what is there? The power widgets are gone, I had to install third party Power Toggles app. The new notification swipe down is annoying, having to swipe up when waking device is annoying. The status bar colors are inconsistent. The menus look childish looking.
Without being dramatic, did Sony take all this time to make sure it ran without crashing? Because I notice very few changes (not even improvements, just any changes) on the UI. I must be missing something.

animations are fluid, but the functionality isn't. My opinion is, if the device has extra power that it can use to make things animate, slide and fade all over the place, better to put that extra power into making the device perform faster. Anyone here who prefers prettier animations instead of faster functionality?
low resolution screenshots in the recents screen. wat. Seriously... wat? Also, the way they've made it it is faster to just go to the apps screen and open whatever app i want, instead of waiting for the recents screen to load and then scroll awkwardly through the programs... Also, you can only see three recent apps. On a device with 6" of screen. three. think about it.
Also... what is the point of having screenshots, anyway? icons are faster, easier to distinguish, take fewer resources and smaller area on screen.
I agree fully on the recent apps screenshots. The blurry images are embarrassing and don't at all go with the clean/sharp theme of everything else. I don't understand why they've made it low res, can't be for performance given no restraint or need anywhere else. Bizarre!
There is over-prettying. For example, the stupid screen swipe up to unlock (after hitting the power button already), the sparkles are just so unnecessary, it is one of the few places the phone actually seems to struggle pulling off the effect.
At the moment my biggest problem is with Yahoo Mail. The account does not seem to auto-sync despite all the settings being correct and even when I force the sync manually the notifications don't show. I've uninstalled and reinstalled, most likely Yahoo to blame, their webmail is always breaking but never ever had a single issue before with KK. This is problematic because it is effectively no longer push email, I have to manually check 50 times a day.
My biggest annoyance is the inability to reclaim the Google search bar area in the Home Screen. I don't want that search button, why can't I use that space, and why a stupid dot to represent the pages of the Homescreen when I only have 1.
Is there actually anything different/new on the backend? My issues aren't severe enough to go back to KK (yet) but seeing what I see, I would have no problem whatsoever buying an Xperia Sony will not upgrade beyond KK.

I agree with you about small changes. I even face some strange problems in my WiFi. the mac address haven't change, but I can't connect to my work WiFi protected network. Sometimes it connects in limited status. One of my friends which updated his Ultra has this problem too.I could connect it to my laptop adhoc wifi netwrok, but for one time. it even can't connect to that network anymore. I rolled back to my stock 14.4.A.0.133 backup. and a'm waiting to fixes from sony.
Agree with you guys. And that stock greenish blueish greyish statusbar color pisses me off! Anybody knows how to change that color?

This will be a Thread for collecting all the kinds of bugs and other issues you might have encountered.
I talked to the german FB group and talked about them sending them a collection of bugs etc from the community. They gave me an email address (from the communication team) where i can send it to once everything is done.
They will then proceed to send the information to the people developing for axon 7 (A2017G in this case). Of course it's not guaranteed that they will definitely fix all the issues. But it's worth a shot imo.
So at first it's important that bugs have the most importance in this thread since those have to be fixed in order to get an enjoyable oreo experience.
BUT you can also post any features you want to have back (examples are daydream, screen color calibration)
To get things finally started, here are the issues that i gathered so far from this thread:
-SD card mounting issues (SD card doesn't stay mounted after reboot)
-Increased battery drain (mixed opinion, some say it's worse, some say it's the same as nougat)
-Preinstalled apps which are uninstallable (like Accuweather, WPS Office) reinstall themselves after reboot
-Events set in Google calendar don't show a notification
-Bluetooth audio developer options (LDAC, 32bit, 96khz, etc) do not stick
-screencast not working on some miracast devices
-Panorama has lower vertical resolution (approximately 1900px while Nougat had 2800px)
-Charging sound file is missing (now it uses error sound file when connecting/disconnecting USB which sounds really annoying)
Missing Features that you wish to come back or added:
-Screen Color Calibration
-Daydream (which might come back since how they worded it to be temporarily disabled)
-Camera2 api not yet fully implemented
-Vulkan API (was present in Nougat, now removed in Oreo for unknown reason)
-Screen lock app (shortcut in quick settings to lock the device)
-Option to remove Carrier name in status bar
-Dark Mode option (preferably true black background for the while UI like quicksettings menu, settings menu etc for max SOT.)
-More sorting options for stock music player (by title number etc instead of by alphabetical order)
-ZTE Toolbox app
I'm sure there is more. But this is what i have found so far as of now. If there is any more issues you encountered, please post them so i can add them to the list.
Also if i missed any additional info for the issues above, please feel free to tell me.
- Dark mode option
- further dimming option (lowest brightness still too bright)
- screen off toggle/widget
1. Screen cast still won't work well, I never get it connected to miracast since nougat and they didnt fix it on oreo, all my other devices work so good with the same miracast.
2. Battery drain faster than nougat or I think this even worse than oreo beta build B01.
Feature:
- The alphabetical order on music folder for stock music is still annoying. No one hopes listening music from A to Z based on title.

I don't know if it's just me, but I have a bug where the download manager won't download anything for a long time despite having stable internet connection. This affects Play Store app downloads and downloads other than Chrome (since Chrome has its own download manager it seems). Basically, if I want to quickly download an app or update them, the initialisation starts but it keeps waiting for stuff to download. It won't abort with an error, it just sticks to the spinning circle. In the notification bar you won't see the download arrow animation, which should be there actually. But if I lay down my phone for a while and then pick it up, it may start downloading normally. It's very annoying, you can imagine m

I know what you mean. But it's not a bug from oreo. I had this too on nougat. Sometimes it still happens. But not as often as it used to be. Dunno what fixes it sadly, but thats probably an issue of play services messing up something since the axon 7 isn't alone. Many other devices have this problem as well sometimes. It comes and goes randomly.
And as you said, chrome and other apps with their own download manager don't seem to have these issues. Again, it's probably play services doing something wrong. Not sure tho, just a guess as play services had many problems in their history

What do you mean with dark mode? Like amoled substratum themes? Or like night light?
Poor wifi and 4g reception. This has been my main problem with this rom.

Quick settings, status bar and system settings are all unbearably white. Due to Google's safety measures you can't even use a third party filter anymore.
On Nougat you could change the quick settings to gray at least and use a third party filter for all the rest. On Oreo, no chance at all. What a bad user experience!
So why even bother with a system update, if it doesn't let you adjust the display brightness to your liking anymore?! And I haven't even mentioned the usefulness of an all white UI on an AMOLED screen (Battery!?).

Hd calls work with incoming but call does not connect for outgoing
Band switching issue band keeps switching thats the main reason for battery drain on 4g
My network is Jio 4g in India
It works in band 3 5 and 40
3 and 5 bands work together but they wont work well with 40 that is they keep switching from one to other with internet connecting and disconnecting
So i switched off band 40 using network signal guru app with magisk root permissions and everything works fine except slow internet speed and persistent hd call issue
Can anyone make solution for band issue
If there is a possiblity to reduce the heat generated during simple tasks.
I had most of those issues: significantly worse battery life, camera freeze when using RAW capture, when I reseted the phone, everything is back to normal, maybe battery is like 5-10% worse than nougat but not sure. Can't say anything about the missing features. I want them too, but most of wanted a Stock + UI and now we complain ? vanilla Android lacks many features like it or not. Hope they release some future firmware update to fix any issues and update the security bulletin.

You had most of these because i used the same thread your post was in as well about the freezing raw capture with stock cam.
But you are the first and only one who had this happen with the camera. So far nobody else reported having the same issue.

I never ever wanted Stock Android. Stock is the least customizable iteration of Android. So who could want this kind of user experience? People who think Google knows what's best for you? Ridiculous!

You can't downgrade with the official update.zip
Also this is the wrong thread to post this. This thread is for bugs found in oreo.
I appear to be having poor quality sound when playing audio though the main speakers. There's a hissing sound.

I disagree on both of your statements. here is why:
1. It is possible to downgrade, but not with all official update.zip that exist (I succeeded in the meantime!)
2. It is a bug in the Oreo rom that the device type is not set, preventing majority of old update.zip to run since they check the device type
I am missing the stock Nougat 'lock screen' option in the Quick options menu. I am using an app to soft lock the screen at the moment which works but am not sure at all why they removed it in first place.
I am also missing the Messaging and Phone customization options available in Nougat, including the different message bubbles types and the background change settings. It is now simply white and blue and you couldn't change it.
I have had a hard time fixing the Notification problem Oreo brought to many apps, including system, resulting in oversleeping for alarm clock app not working at all. This may not be a particular problem of ZTE directly since apparently it is an Oreo issue but I still don't understand why so many notifications have been forced to the swipe-down menu without default option to disable them. Like "this and this process running in the background" and using default notification tone for every single thing happening to the phone. Adjusting settings in Android System notification modes solved some problems but delayed or not showed at all certain notifications like SMS messages or alarm clock not working - even though these were specifically made to pop and make sound.
Battery life for me varies. It may be up to 10-12 hours if I don't do almost anything and just keep it in stand-by to 3-4-5 hours if I use the screen, some browsing and listening to music. Screen-on-Time in general is up to 2-3 hours in best case scenario. Also sometimes for no apparent reason I see the battery percentage going down like every few seconds by 1 percent and with no use of anything special, just the screen. Overall I could rate it (a little) worse than Nougat considering that I've now gone through all Power settings and disabling anything I don't need per app.
I can only congratulate ZTE for making Dolby Atmos now working on both earphones and front speakers at all times, including with custom player equalizer running at the same time as Dolby Atmos. It never worked for me and was also accompanied with various bugs on all 6, 6.1, 7 and 7.1.
The "choose what your SD card should do" on every restart is pretty bad and I strongly prefer the Nougat behavior when it simply worked. Maybe adding a Setting - "do not ask again" or an option in the System Settings where you can change the status of the SD card on the go would work better than unmounting it every time. This causes many issues with file managers, players and different other apps with files located on the SD card. I hope they re-work it.
Finally, I noticed that Ultra Power Saver works in a much worse way than it did on Nougat. It kind of goes into another OS mode upon return from which it does not start apps that are set to auto-start upon reboot. The Nougat style of simply black-and-whit-ening the screen and turning off any data was so much better and didn't return the phone in a half-functioning state when connected to the charger. Also at 15% as I adjusted it, the middle power saving function (Power Saver or so) does not seem to be at least visibly working so the battery keeps draining as fast as if it was not on.
So, in short - dark(er) Quick Menu, getting back Nougat default app customization options, fixing the SD card message upon every reboot, not forcing TouchPal to be default keyboard or in use even if another keyboard is chosen, or disabling both, and possibly working on better battery life would be all amazing. I still think ZTE did a great job with 8.0 and am happy they finally released it to us.
The phone was frozen and restarted several times.
After that, fingerprint doesn't work and I had to reconfigure fingerprint record.
