[Q] Help with custom ROM installation - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My device is a HTC inspire 4G and I have been having issues with installing a new rom. Here are the multiple steps I have taken and retried over 3 times. 1.) Wiped SD card and made it a goldcard thingie. (not very knowing about how gold cards work) 2.) formatted system, data, cache, and anything else that everybody says needs to be formatted to be able to install a custom rom. I um am a dumbass and decided not to backup anything so I am kinda ****ed on that. I have rooted my phone and unlocked my bootloader. But I didnt get s-off and im not sure if thats whats causing it. Whenever I go to my recovery area it pops up a "clockworkmod" and stuff where I can install and format etc. my custom rom, gapps, and inspiremod. I have rebooted right after installing those and waited for about 20 minutes and it just stays as the "HTC" white logo screen. Any ideas on why its doing this? Do I need s-off? If so is there a way I can take my OTHER HTC inspire 4G and transfer the stock rom and stuff from that one and copy it over to the one I am having issues with.

[Q] HTC Unlock and flashing roms that require sd partitions.

Hi everyone,
Before I ask my question I want to thank everyone for their constant hard work in bringing us roms, kernels, rooting software, and everything else that you guys do. We appreciate all your work.
I recently got an Evo 3D from ebay as a replacement for my Evo 4g. Unfortunately it came with Hboot 1.50. I'm not new to flashing and rooting but there a few things I'm stumped with now that this method is a little more complicated that it was on the 4g.
A few hours ago I unlocked my bootloader using the Htc method, successfully flashed TWRP, made a nandroid, and flashed a nighty of Synergy.
I was glad to hear through this guide <http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239821> that there would be no problem flashing roms with different kernels as long as it was through fastboot then recovery.
Now everything would be fine except for the fact that in order to get the most out of these roms you need to partition your sd card. (is that right?)
TWRP doesn't allow you the option to format your sd card, so I am just confused at the steps I need to take.
Do I need to find a .img of Amon Ra 2.3 and push it through adb (like I did the first time with TWRP), format my sd card, and then replace the TWRP? or is there another method I should use?
Every time you use adb to put the phone in recovery to flash roms it needs to load the .img of the recovery. If I rename the Amon Ra and TWRP files can I just use them interchangeably? I can find the flashable zips but not the .img files that I'm going to need.
I just want to be sure before I screw anything up.
Lastly I looked around but am still confused about the best settings and tweaks to use for the sd card partitioning. Seems like there are a ton. I'm just wondering what other people are using and how they like it.
Thanks for any help.
Isn't Amon Ra only for Evo 4G?
Also, I did not know that about the partitions. It could be why I am unsuccessful in flashing any ROM (except synergy, which was the first). I have formated the system/ data/ cache/ and Dalvik cache 3x each, yet every other rom (viper, clean, etc) I try to flash get's stuck at the white screen. Luckily, I made a nandroid backup.

Phone won't boot past HTC Screen

Hi all,
So my phone won't boot past the white HTC screen. I'm able to boot into recovery, but that's it. I'll go into recovery and try to flash an assortment of ROMs, but it never gets past the HTC screen. It gets to the HTC screen, stays there for 15 seconds or so, then reboots back into the screen.
I'm 1.4 S-OFF. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Twist: When I boot it with the SD card in, it doesn't work.
When I boot it with the SD card out, it doesn't work.
BUT When I boot it with the SD card out, then slide in the SD card while the white HTC screen is on, then it boots. Wtf. Anyone have any ideas?
first thought, did you wipe cache/dalvik/data?
second, GSM or CDMA?
if all else fails just run a RUU to get things back to a functional state

I've tried wiping everything, flashing AOSP ROMs, Sense, all of them. I'm CDMA.
Something else: When I install 4EXT recovery, I can't boot into recovery. It gives me white screen reboots like in the OP. But when I'm on Clockworkmod, I can boot into recovery.
Gonna try a RUU when I get home :\
Did you do anything just before this started happening? For instance, did this problem start immediately after you tried to flash a new rom?
I'd be really interested as to why you were able to get it to boot by putting the SD card in mid-boot. I honestly have no idea if an SD card is required for an android phone to boot (never had a need to try). Are the connections on your SD card, or that port, somehow degraded or dirty?
the card is not needed, all boot relevant info is in the phone itself.
it's unlikely that the problem is in the card slot, I would have to assume that the problem is software related, maybe it's trying to read some data it doesn't have access to? mind you it still wouldn't hurt to try and check the card for errors (an external card reader would come in handy)
ok, just out of curiosity, when you go into CWM and clear: cache then dalvik then cache and data, do u get an error after it's done?
how'd the RUU go?

[Q] Evo LTE black screen possible brick?

I am a relative noob at flashing roms and rooting phones, but last night I ran into an issue. My phone was having all sorts of problems so I was going to put it back to factory, then start from scratch. I then decided to just flash a different rom. here is what happened.
I deleted SuperSU - this was done as part of the process to unroot and put back to factory, after this step I decided to flash a different rom
Put new ROM on phones internal memory as well as SD card
Wipe data
wipe cache and delvic cache
install new rom
Black screen
In an attempt to unbrick I relocked my bootloader.
Now, my phone can power on (Give white screen and HTC logo), then go black, and I can access Recovery mode. That is all.
I have plugged the phone to my computer and tried running the RUU, but the RUU will not recognize the phone.
I am not sure what to do to unbrick my phone and get it working again. Any and all help would be most appreciated!
Sorry I can't be more eloquent with my words, but I'm at work. I will be responding throughout the day, though.
thanks again so much to anyone that can help!
Try running it straight from bootloader
I loaded into Bootloader, selected Fastboot(USB), ran the .exe and it still won't recognize the phone. However, I did get recovery unlocked again. So I can get into recovery mode, flash all the ROMs I want, mount and unmount, yet still everytime I flash a new ROM it still boots to a black screen. Am I doing this right?
Try a Rom with kernel installer
Thanks! Since I am still a little new could you tell me how I would spot a ROM with kernel installer or could you point me to any one that could work? From then, it's the same process as flashing any other ROM? Do I need to do something with the kernel?
Meanbean and stock with goodies are the 2 that I'm certain of. Meanbean needs to be flashed twice the first time
Thanks so much for your help, I will post my results soon!
Failed
Here's what it says. Sorry for the blurry picture. I followed directions closely.
What version of recovery are you using? You may need to update it. Assuming you have a pc, try mounting the internal memory to pc through twrp. Windows will automatically tell you to format if its damaged
2.1 Updating now
omg it finally worked! Updated TWRP using fastboot and flashed MeanBean. Thank you so much!!!

I think I'm About to Brick This...

Trying to install MeanBean...I updated the Firmware to the latest, have the phone unlocked and rooted (it says TAMPERED and UNLOCKED in the recovery screen) and did a factory reset. I have TWRP installed and can still get to the TEAMWIN RECOVERY project interface...
I was installing MeanBean and it just stuck on about 75% and stayed there. I waited for about ten minutes and figured something must have gone wrong so I didn't really have a choice but to shut it down. After starting back up when I tried to install again it said "FAILED" in red letters. I decided to re-download the ROM but now when I mount the SD CARD from within the recovery menu (to transfer the new file) my computer says that I must format the drive before I can use it and won't let me see the contents of the sd-card. I didn't want to do that for fear of bricking...so I don't really know what to do from here. I should add that I don't have a backup made in TWRP (I got the phone yesterday and hadn't installed or done anything to the OS)
Anyone know what should be done at this point?
thx
I'm updating this for anyone else who runs into issues like this: I went ahead and formatted the SD card from within windows, then relocked the phone, reinstalled the RUU and I'm back in a workable mode

I had the exact same problem. I just reformatted the internal storage and that fixed a lot of my issues. I can't however get the RUU to work. Can't seem to find my phone, neither can HTC Sync. Is this just a problem caused by MeanBean? I use to run MeanBean but then switched to CM10 for a few months and was going to switch back. Never had an issue like this before.

[HELP] HTC Hero GSM not booting when SDCard is in

So I got an HTC Hero. I rooted, flashed custom ROMS, had much fun, but trouble started when I wanted to try out BEASTsense. Prepaired SDCard with EXT, flashed, all went fine. Like the fool I am, I removed the sdcard while ROM was working, so all apps disappeared. In order to fix that I rebooted. And then it started:
- Phone bootloops (not even reaching bootscreen) when the sdcard is in (yes, I tried another sdcard, yes, they had no EXT partition).
- Phone boots just right when sdcard is not in, and when I install it it doesn't detect it.
- RUU'd to stock, same problem
- HEROIMG'd to stock, same problem.
I would say it's hardware, but the bootloader/HBOOT reads and installs the HEROIMG from SD just fine. Help. Please.
(sorry for my relatively poor English)
EDIT: Before using RUU or HEROIMG, I tried booting into recovery and wiping everything, but the recovery itself wouldn't recognise my SD, so I could not flash another ROM or use my precious NANDroid backups. Just so you know
help!
Got the same issue, hero keeps rebooting, cant reach any menu, think i got it bricket.
Anyone has any idee, tryed hard reset.
With or without sdcard, same story
Try to wipe sd-ext in recovery... (it will delete your apps)
thanks
