Wrong Google+ profile associated with personal contact - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I've been experiencing a particularly annoying bug lately with Google+, namely the wrong Google+ profile being associated with my personal contact. I've attached screenshots of my problem below. You'll see that I am clearly logged in with my own account "Adrien", yet when I "Keep contacts up to date" under Settings, my personal contact is somehow randomly associated with "David"'s Google+ profile.
I wasn't experiencing this problem up until a few days ago; before that, things worked fine. All of a sudden, my profile picture in Quick Settings disappeared, so I decided to switch "Keep contacts up to date" off and on again to reinitiate the sync. When I turned it back on, the bug was born. I also switched to PACMAN ROM recently, but I'm inclined to believe that it isn't a problem with the ROM as it was working for a bit while I was using it and I don't think I did anything that would have initiated such a problem as I essentially only use Google+ to backup photos.
I tried my other Google+ account and the same thing happens, albeit with a different random profile of someone in my circles. It is always the same profile for each respective account, however.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I wasn't able to find anything similar to this anywhere.
Thanks!
EDIT: Moving the person to a different circle just makes it link to another random person in my circle's profile. I assume deleting people will also yield the same result.

BUMP
I'm having the exact same issue here. Definitely seems to be on Google's side and not user error. Still haven't been able to fix it. Wiping Google+/contact sync/contacs/contact storage data does nothing. As soon as you open the Contacts app, it happens all over again. The only option is to deselect the "keep contacts up to date" within Google+ and then clear data in those apps I mentioned. I'm left with the default blue profile avatar, but it's better than a picture of someone else's kid!

Exchange Corporate email settings problem solution [JB 4.1.1]

I recently solved a real pain of an email issue I was having, and wanted to pass along the experience. I had tried searching these forums for several days, but didn't quite find my problem, and didn't find the solution all in one place. With that in mind, I'm hoping this information helps someone, even if a bit of it may be covered in other threads (sorry if so).
I had upgraded recently to JB 4.1.1, and was having a lot of problems getting my corporate/exchange email account to work. The calendar and contacts would work sometimes, and the email never got past the "waiting for sync" screen. Anytime the calendar and contacts would work, they would break after a reboot of the phone.
I also found that sometimes exchange account would stick around after it stopped working, and other times it would disappear (from the Android settings > accounts list) completely. I had set the accounts up both through the stock email app, and through a third - party email app (Enhanced Email, a good app).
I tried deleting and recreating the accounts, with varying settings (port numbers, accepting all security certificates, etc.). Later on, I went to my company's online web access for Exchange, and deleted all the mobile connections so that it would create a new connection for my current phone and ROM. I recreated the account (for what seemed like the 50th time) after that. Still no good.
The thing that made the difference: I finally read a tip somewhere to force stop the (stock) email client, and clear its cache and data. After that, the email app needed to be set up again, but email synched for the first time since I installed this ROM, and my calendar and contacts work reliably. It's been several days and reboots, and no further problems have come up.
I hope this helps someone, and again, apologies if the information is duplicative. I couldn't find it all in one place, and was really beating my head against the wall trying to find a fix.

Hi there, I think im glad i found this thread although not sure it will help with my corporate mail problem. My problem exists only with contacts not syncing from my corporate exchange account. My mail and calendar is ok just no contacts sync.
You mention to force stop the stock email client, can you advise the steps and exact name of the process? Do you mean in manage apps - All - Email ? I cant seem to stop that process its all greyed out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, due to my role i really need my exchange contacts to sync.
Cheers,
Hi guys,
My experience is different.
If you have problems to sync your email you need to clear all previous mobile connections from outlook (via outlook web access) and set up your account from zero on the device.
Quick question why do you use a third party email client? Do you have Samsung device? Got the same problem and had to move to a asop (CM10)
Samsung email client and exchange doesn't work well since the original Galaxy.

solution for me
For me what solved was a solution I found in another post here in the forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774978&page=2
In summary:
"Settings --> Data Usage --> Menu --> and check Auto Sync Data
Try setting up Exchange account again and you'll see the prompt to activate a Device Administrator this time. "

[Q] Updated 4.3, loosing contact pic in text messages

I just updated my HTC One to 4.3 today, things seem to work fine except that when I get a new text message, the contact picture for that user or sometimes all users of current texts disappears for a while than magically comes back. If I go into contacts, the person's picture is always there. Also, it is not consistent, sometimes it happens and sometimes not. Anyone else experience this after the update/any solutions? I did notice that during the update it said updatinig contact database.

Same is happening to me. It's not really a problem for me, I just close the app from the recent apps list and open it again and it's back to normal. Annoying but I can deal.
I'm having this same issue and it seems it's affecting all HTC One's running 4.3, not just T-Mobile. Any thoughts as to possible causes of this problem? I hope HTC becomes aware of it so they can fix it.
This is weird. It's happening to my friend too. I don't have this problem though. I told my friend to clear data on s few apps like contacts, people, dialer, phone and messages. She said it was good for a day but today is back to the same problem. I wonder why some people have this problem and some don't.
Are you guys having problems with all contacts or just some? Maybe it's happening to the contacts that aren't backed up with google?

It's happening randomly on pretty much all contacts (and all my contacts are Google contacts). The only unique thing I have is that my contact photos are synced to my phone using HaxSync. For those of you also with this issue, do you use HaxSync?
I can't figure out what could be the cause of the issue. I contacted HTC and they just told me to clear the cache.
Others have been experiencing the problem here as well: http://forums.androidcentral.com/htc-one/319268-sms-contact-picture-4-3-a.html
Some even performed a factory reset and the issue was still present so clearing the cache wouldn't be a fix.
For me, it does not matter if the picture is from my gallery (google pic) or sync'd to Facebook. It gives the same result. I have tried turning off Facebook sync but it does not make a difference. Given a little time, the picture always returns or I can go into open apps and "close messaging" and when I reopen all pictures are there.
After doing some research, I went into recovery mode and cleared system cache after a couple places suggested this after an update. Unfortunately, this made no difference. I was going to try a factory reset and let all my contacts resync, etc but don't want to do all that work if it is not a sure solution. This all worked just fine for me prior to the update. Hopefully, this will get the attention of HTC. Also, I have read in the last couple days that HTC is preparing another update that is hitting other countries first to move all HTC One's to Sense 5.5. It looks like as big a file as this past update so maybe a fix may be there?
I have it too. HTC screwed up here. They'll have to address this in a next update. Lets all email HTC and let them know

Hopefully they send us an update just as fast as they did with the HDR camera mode screw up, they latterly fixed it the next day.

OK, so I've been Tweeting with @TmobileHelp and I advised that the contact pictures were from sync sources, they say that the pictures we have associated with the contact should be on the devices and this problem should go away. Though it makes sense, at the same time it doesn't make any sense to me.
If we have contact sync's and the phone lets you replicate that kind of data from whats stored on other servers, why should I have a local copy of the pics for it to work?... can anyone help me confirm the local pics thing?
Thanks!

What do you use to sync your pictures? I use HaxSync. Not sure if everyone having issues is also using that or not. But either way, syncing photos is much more convenient than having to store individual photos for everyone on the device and it worked fine prior to the update so we shouldn't have to lose that ability. What's odd is how the photos are sometimes there and sometimes not. Maybe it has something to do with the linked accounts on those contacts? All of my contacts with photos have a Google contact and a HaxSync account linked together.

Do you use the HaxSync Jelly Bean Workaround ??? I haven't tried that software, it says that its for 4.1, doesn't mention anything for 4.3.

That's only for 4.1. 4.2 and above don't need it. I just tweaked something and my contacts photos seem to working so far. Not sure if it'll last but some of you may want to try it out.
In my contacts app, click up top left in the "Phonebook" dropdown. Unselect HaxSync and just leave Google checked. All of my contacts that are already linked are still showing their photos, and the issue in the messaging apps seems to be fixed (at least for the past 25 minutes).
Let me know if this helps anyone else.
My hypothesis is that those of us having issues with the blank contact photos in the messaging app have multiple items checked in the Phonebook dropdown.
EDIT: Nevermind.... the issue is back. I can't figure it out. It's gotta be a bug that needs to be patched.
Megabiteg: I have a few contacts that do not use Facebook so their pictures I take from things in my photo gallery. I have replaced them multiple times and it makes no difference. I think that was just the quick and easy "answer" from Tmo support.
Jpzsports: I tried your idea and only have Google checked in contacts app and I still have the issue. I am anxious to hear if this continues to work for you!
I have even gone so far to look at other apps that have permission to look at/modify contact information and disabling them or have them not interface with contacts and it has no effect.

That's interesting to hear that the issue still occurs even with photos from the gallery. That removes the idea that it's purely a synced photos problem.
And sadly my idea failed to work so it looks like this is definitely a bug that needs to be patched.

Thanks a lot for the follow up. I agree, I know that Tmo-support was pulling a fast one, initially they actually suggested me to pull the battery of the phone out and replace... (lol)
I think that this issue is connected to a contacts database corruption, I've always notice the the contact phone sync (regardless of the source) its kind of flaky, it must of gotten worse while upgrading. Funny because I chose to delete all the txt msg I had prior to upgrading (because I read this thread before hand) hoping this would minimize my chance of getting the issue but no.... it didn't work.
I'm going to keep on trying to figure out what else can I do to make this better until Tmo and HTC decides to fix it.
I hope that these posts don't seem unnecessary but I want to post what I have tried so others don't feel the need. I was playing with the contacts app and suddenly under phonebooks available (upper left corner pulldown) the sim card showed up, where it had not prior and the three contacts listed where the 3 contacts Tmo uses for you to check minutes, balance, whatever ( I never use these) I know I did not put anything to the sim so I deleted these and unchecked sim....no difference. I now have gone back and added sim to phonebooks (tho empty) to see if any difference.
Megabiteg: I agree with you saying about a change in the contacts database and I specifically remember during the update a message saying something to the effect of "updating/reformating contacts database".
Just another text, no change, it appears it does not matter what phonebooks are/are not used; the problem still exists. I am reluctantly coming to the conclusion that this is something HTC will have to remedy.
Did I just post that I would try not to post as much? LOL My experience got me to wonder if maybe the system was going out and checking the sim phonebook first (I would guess most people do not use it) and not finding an image and then after some lag going to contacts? So: I shut the phone down, took out the sim, powered up and went into contacts app and sms app (everything there), powered down and replaced the sim and rebooted.
Well, absolutely no difference. I am all out of ideas other than waiting for a patch...damn.
Is it just me or does the missing photo seem to affect the most recent person you text? (top of the messaging app)
I have a theory that it is related to the Link Contact service. It doesnt seem to effect contacts who have photos on every linked account.

[Q] KitKat issue syncing contacts on an exchange server

My understanding is that this is a known issue, I'm looking for a workaround or resolution.
Using KitKat, and the standard AOSP email client, I setup my corporate email account in the usual way. Everything works the way it is supposed to except for syncing contacts.
Normally I have fewer than 100 contacts, but with KitKat I end up with over 600. From my research into this issue it is because KitKat is syncing the "suggested contacts" from exchange, not just the contacts listed in my address book. I'm not sure who made the decision to do that, but it doesn't sound like the best idea to me.
I see this problem on my tablet which is running the CM 11.0 nightlies, but I do not see it on my HTC One running AndroidNow, even though Android Now is at 4.4. That is what tells me that the problem is in Exchange Services for the standard AOSP client. I confirmed this by finding this site:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/1...4-4-with-gmail-style-ui-and-a-slide-out-menu/
I downloaded the appropriate files and installed the apks on my HTC One. When I setup my corporate email there I started seeing the same issue.
Does anyone have any news or recommendations on this issue? By the way, I'm not looking for "install such-and-such email client, it's better" type recommendations. I've tried the majority of them already.
Thanks
It is interesting to me that no one has anything to say on this issue. Perhaps no one saw my post?
At any rate, I found a "solution" which is clumsy but seems to do the trick. The suggestion I found in the google forums was to delete the "Suggested Contacts" folder (I did it in the Exchange web mail app), delete the Corporate account and recreate. I did and I now have the correct number of contacts.
From what I have found this problem is caused by code added to KitKat for syncing sub-folders. It is an issue that Google is aware of, but has marked at a very low priority. I assume that means that a real fix for this will be a long time coming.

In case you may not have noticed, there is a open issue for this now:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=61979
Im having the same problem with you, but removing the "suggested contacts" folder from Outlook didn't work (not that I should have to do that). It was if the contacts were cached to the phone.... even after removing the account. I even tried disabling sync, putting it in airplane mode, and using "Contact Remover" from the Play Store to delete the contacts from my phone (disabling sync and airplane mode to prevent a total deletion of all contacts on next sync). After that, I removed the account from Android, removed all phone pairings from Exchange (through OWA), and cleared the cache of the phone. As soon as I resynced, they all came back.
I'm beyond pissed. I literally have 5,000 contacts, and I can barely open the People applet. This is ridiculous.

I can't argue with your assessment, especially since it is a known issue that is, apparently, not getting any attention from Google. That is disappointing.

I have this same problem, but it seems to be Exchange email address history (start a new email: start typing address and the autocomplete list appears)that is causing the problem for me. If I delete the history the contact is now longer shown in my contact list. The problem is this history list is ever growing and changing. It seems we are forced to live with excess users until Google gets this fixed.

Ahhh, well that would make sense why deleting the "suggested contacts" folder doesn't fix it. I don't want to flush my autocomplete history. It's quite useful.
In the interim, I'm just 'pushing' my contacts from Touchdown using the "Copy to Phone" option, and not adding the corporate email option for now.
Here is a pretty nice work around to this issue.
Go into outlook and create a new category for all of the contacts you want to sync with your device. Once the contacts are part of the new category, go to your device and in the contacts>>accounts to display>>select the corporate account>> and select which list(select the category you created in outlook>> thats it and resync your contacts.

Agreed, a true fix is still needed. The biggest problem with this solution is making sure you put new contacts into the new category when they are being added.
I have the issue that my phone will not sync to the exchange contacts PERIOD.
It downloaded them fine apparently, but any changes made on the device do not get updated on the server.
WTF? How ****ing stupid is google to break activesync!?
I'm not just having problems with contacts... my entire calendar will not sync. I basically get no meeting reminders. I can log into exchange webmail and check my calendar there, but that is ridiculous.
As for the contacts, none of the tips and tricks in this thread have helped. I have completely deleted "suggested contacts" (which is a shame, because it was actually useful), but my phone is still pulling them from somewhere....
The only thing that works for me is installing Touchdown and using it to sync, then push the contacts to the phone. It does pick up the bullshvt ones...

This is by far the most irritating part of KitKat.
I work for a mobile phone company with business customer and its a very common complaint.

I can't understand why it cannot be fixed. I don't even fully understand the problem, as I've gone through Outlook/Exchange multiple times cleaning out the "suggested contacts" and still had my phone's contact list spammed with every email address that is and ever was.
It took a long, long time... but I used "Contact Remover" from the Play store and just went down the list checking contacts I wanted to delete. It's much faster than going into each contact, hitting menu, then hitting delete. Still, you have to be careful not to delete contacts you want to keep. Many times, they're named exactly the same as the spam ones.
On a side note, I am struggling to understand why there are so many contacts that have been "augmented" by apps such as Facebook and Lync 2013. I never choose to sync those, but it appears to have done so anyway.
same problem here, contacts on phone (nexus 5) are filled with rubbish now

Problem with contacts and call log

Hi All,
I hope you are well.
I have a serious issue with my contacts.
I have Android 6.0.1, CM13.0-20160802-NIGHTLY. and the latest Open Gapps.
All was working fine for some time, but eventually I have noticed that my dialer is not showing contact names and something is preventing my contacts from being saved.
In Contacts app I cannot even choose between Local phone or Google account for contact's storage.
When I save a new contact it is not saving it, I can see that Google account is set to sync (in Settings -> Accounts) and it is syncing all the information.
I can see a whole list of contacts on the contacts list though.
I have upgraded CM several times since then hoping that this will resolve the issue. I have also reinstalled Open Gapps several times as well.
I have cleared Dalvik and other cache, fixed permissions on any partition I could, still the same.
I was forced to use TrueDialer to show me contact names on the call log, but I don't like this app. When people call me it is only showing their number and no associated contact information.
I thought that maybe Zoiper is causing some conflicts as this app can integrate with your dialer, but when uninstalled the issue is still there.
Please advise.
Thank you

Thank you

I have just read your thread. Is your problem solved yet? If not, I'll start giving you some assistance.
Experiencing the same trouble with my alcatel IDOL 4, the dialer is not displaying the contact (already saved in my Google address book and the Google account is synced with the phone) names, neither for incoming and nor for outgoing.
This is a serious trouble and virtually all the phone numbers are appearing UNKNOWN to me! My brain cannot help me with these 230 contact numbers remembering every time I have to receive a call!
Help will be appreciated and thanks in advance.

Question GMAIL

Does anyone else have an issue with Gmail notifications? Most of the time I receive no notifications about new email until I unlock the phone. Even then they do not always come in quickly. When I open the Gmail app they do come in.
Yes, they will "eventually" come in on their own but way later than they should. I have done every battery/data optimization/exception I can think of and find. This should NOT be happening in 2021! This is not a OnePlus phone and even then my 8T is not this bad. Also, the notification LED does not activate for Gmail while it does for Messages and WhatsApp. I have gone through every possible notification setting on the phone as well as for the Gmail app itself and made sure that using the LED was selected on them all. I hate that Gmail is installed as a system app! WHY???
Another interesting things is that Gmail is NOT listed as the default app. It is not even there as a selection. Messages is installed as a system app and it is listed as the default. WHY?
I am liking the phone, but not receiving notifications for such an essential feature as email is NOT GOOD!
The phone is causing Gmail to go into deep sleep when the screen is locked unnecessarily.
I may have found the solution. To start I went into Settings > accounts just to double check that the toggle for "Automatically sync app data" was turned on and it was. While in the same screen I tapped on my email account and then tapped on "Account sync", Here you can do a manual sync of all the various apps associated with your Google account. SO I tapped on the 3 dots in the top right and tapped on "Sync now" and the only thing that synced immediately was Contacts and maybe one other (can't remember which one. No matter how many times I would retry to do a manual sync the same thing would happen.
So I closed all of this out and went directly into the Gmail app > settings and chose my email account and scrolled down to "Sync Gmail" under the "Data usage" section and unchecked this setting. I rebooted the phone, went back into Gmail > settings my email and re-checked the "Sync Gmail" selection, rebooted again and went back into Settings > accounts > my email account > account sync and all the various apps listed in this section had now synced properly. I could tell by the time stamp for each one. I also did a manual sync again and everything in the list synced up within about 10 seconds! I was happy. I locked my phone, set it down, and within a minute or two I received several emails and the notification chime went off. I'm still not sure if the notification LED lit up or not but I think it did. Hopefully this fixes the issue.
Sometimes it isn't what is selected but the order in which you select things so as not to cause a conflict.
This is one area of Android that I think needs improvement (Samsung is the worst for this) that there are too many settings that seem redundant, counter intuitive, and conflict with one another.
Well, after writing all the previous entries I am still having the same issues with Gmail. On my OnePlus 8T every morning shortly after logging in my emails would come in without any prompting on my part. With my Xperia 1 iii I received NOTHING until I actually opened the Gmail app itself and sure enough there were about 5 emails that popped up! Something is very wrong here. I am not looking forward to a factory reset but I may have no choice. I will say this: If after a factory reset Gmail is still unresponsive I will definitely be sending this thing back!
Can confirm that there is something wrong with gmail. Just gmail. Ive tried 3rd party email apps and they work.
Totally understandable that you would prefer gmail over others. I too would actually prefer my gmail to work. I hope this is fixed in a firmware update.

Exactly! I decided to NOT do a factory reset because I feel that it would not help. Instead I just disabled Gmail and installed Bluemail. It has more settings than I care to mess with but at least all my email notifications arrive properly! I am glad that I am not the only one this is happening to. Is there some way to inform Sony directly that they have a problem? I liked it better when Gmail was a Play Store install! I DO NOT like it when ANY apps are installed as a service!
I chatted with Sony Tech support. They went through all the usual settings that I already tried several times. They escalated it so we will see what happens. One thing I have noticed, which may be relevant or not, is that with Blue Mail installed when I do get an email both Gmail and Blue Mail give a notification????
To me it sounds like you just need to whitelist the app in your battery saving settings.

Please, while I can appreciate the suggestion, do you think I did not already go through every possible setting and permutation in an attempt to resolve this issue? I am a retired IT Systems Engineer and I have used cell phones for so long it's not even funny. Not to mention there are others experiencing the exact same thing! However, I was forced to do a factory reset this morning so "maybe" things will start to work properly.
I have exact Gmail notification issue when I got my X1iii but the issue resolved after I upgraded to 61.0.A.11.92 this morning. After switched off Gmail sync off and on and turn on the notification on individual labels, the notification was back.
It might be the previous firmware used a bad GMSCore. My device is a XQ-BC62. BTW the install step 3 did take some time but my phone didn't stuck at that step and it went through.
I have different problem with gmail notifications. For some reason notifications are always coming when in the evening I plug in my phone for charging. After a moment gmail notifications are coming. And this happens all the time.
??? Sony?
Guys please treat everyone with respect.
We are here to help each other and exchange our experience. Not to offend each other.
Thank you.
I have had a few days now with the last update = .92 and so far it appears as if my Gmail notifications are coming in exactly as they should when the phone is locked. For sure much better than before the update. So whatever Sony did in this update (besides the security update) is working for me. The LED is also lighting up properly for Gmail! Good job Sony!
Gmail still does not sync automatically for me on the .92 update. Factory reset and it works for a bit but once after a while it stops. No amount of uninstalling GMS updates or clearing its data will get it working again, so I have no idea what happened.

Have to ask...you did give Gmail unlimited data? Also, you did set Gmail to "excepted" in battery settings?
Even the most experienced sometimes miss things.

Just to be sure, I went through and double checked that Gmail, Google Play Services, and Google Services Framework all had:
* Battery/Power-saving Feature: Excepted
* Unrestricted data: Enabled
Still didn't resolve my sync issues
Did you try this: settings > accounts > tap your email google account > account sync > has everything synced fairly recently? Any of them appear to be stuck, not spinning? Top right 3 dots sync now, does everything finish syncing?
Just adding that I noticed this problem after the .92 update. I'm not sure if its there before. So the .92 didn't solve the issue on my end, glad it solved yours.

I haven't had issues with gmail but I have had the kind of issues described in OP with other phone models and similar apps and the cause was a bit too eager battery optimization settings so I honestly thought it was the cause here too.
If it was not, then it is a shame I couldn't help.
But as a response to your comment: No. I don't think people here are idiots. I just think you are one.

You make it sound like you think people are idiots because as already mentioned in the FIRST POST, he already excepted his apps from battery optimization. If you still ask people if they have done so, you obviously think we are idiots, since you ask a question that has already been answered. Grow up please.
Edit: Here let me quote it for you:
I have done every battery/data optimization/exception I can think of and find.

Testing out a potential fix which seems to be working for now.
I found out that my phone backup isn't working either. Manually pressing the button, the backup keeps telling it failed and asks me to try again later. Searching online, there are some that suggest to remove the screen lock to see if backup starts working again.
After I removed my screen lock, I cleared cache/storage of Google Play Services, Google Services Framework and Gmail. Then I rebooted my phone and left it a while to let it fully boot. I can now backup my phone, and I am getting my Gmail notifications. Now I am observing to see if this is permanent..
If the fix is permanent, at least on my end, it seems that Sony's build of android has buggy encryption. This was an issue with other brands too.
Update on my problem. Firstly, after trying the above, I noticed a few days later that in general I wasn't getting notifications from anything. I concluded that I messed up Google Services too much and therefore factory reset my phone.
After that and readding my google account, My notifications was fixed, except Gmail still wasn't getting notifications, but phone backup started working. I was about to give up and use another email app, when today the September security update arrived in 61.0.A.14.3 update. Being desperate to try anything I updated without hesitation.
This seems to fix the problem and I am getting my gmail notifications.
Not getting my hopes up too much and just continue monitoring but I hope this the end of my google problems.
