With all the data I'm giving to Google (and other cloud services) is there a way to encrypt it? For example In google calendar I've started putting details of doctor appointments and I've recorded some calls which get stored on Google Drive. How can I make sure Google (or other cloud providers) aren't spying on it? Is there some way to encrypt it on the phone?
You can't. If don't want google to know where you are don't use google services.
you can encrypt files via BoxCryptor before uploading them to google drive!

Never tried it myself...
Doesn't work for the calendar tough.

Hello,
I am sure there are numerous applications for GPS tracking and remote controlling/wiping all the data and settings pattern/numeric access codes for your mobiles.
Problem is that executing these safety measures are somehow dependent on certain other factors and can have successful or unsuccessful consequences.
I am thinking of anything more basic and hassle free way of ensuring that even in worst condition I can have certain peace of mind that my critical gmail account data would not be accessed for unauthorized use. For example when it was unlocked for use and meanwhile it was lost or snatched how can I be sure that my google account information specifically gmail/maps are safe. I know I can change the password by reaching to a nearby PC, but that is not always a possibility.
I have got my Samsung Galaxy S2 for more than a month and just figuring out a safe way before putting it in active use.
An idea which I am thinking of is to have another Gmail account specifically for use with Android Phone, and import/export the actual "Contacts" only to this new email account. Since contacts are the most frequently used item, they would be in sync with the new email account, any delta changes would have to be replicated to your original gmail account as well.
I dont use Picasa, so it is of no importance to me to sync the pictures with picasa account.
For access to my actual gmail and other emails (like work email) I can use an add on email android applications like K9-Mail to configure the gmail as IMAP. To get access to this email program I can install any application which can password protect the access to applications and can reactivate the password after any time of inactivity. I dont know whether in such case would I get popup in the notification bar for new emails or not.
The only two most used applications now left are
- Maps and Latitude
- Google Plus
Now both of them need to be used with my actual gmail account, since all contacts and connection are related to my actual identity on google.
So i need to know that is it possible to use one gmail (fake/secondary) account on android phone just for syncing contacts and use another actual (primary/original) account for logging in the official google maps and google plus applications. I know even in this case the password needs to be changed in case of a mishap, however I can be a bit satisfied that all critical data in the email storage is safe.
I just need your opinions and suggestion on the mentioned procedure, or is there any other good and recommended practice for getting multiple accounts configured on Android Phone and selectively use the google accounts for different applications.
Thanks for your inputs.
Hmm...seems like everyone is so sure of the safety of their handset, no one even gives a s*** to think about the worst-case scenario of losing a device.
Cheers...hope everyone retains the droid for life..
I've always used a regular Google account (with Gmail) to setup my Android phone. Recently I've switched my private domain over to Google Apps, and since you cannot import a personal Google Account into Google Apps I had to create a new one and transfer all the stuff I needed to (calendar, mail, photo's, etc).
The only thing you cannot transfer are the apps you purchased (way to go Google!). So now I'm stuck with my new personal account with everything on it, and my old Google Account just for the apps I've purchased on the Android Market (Google Play). This causes really annoying issues!
I add both accounts to my phone and turn off sync for the old account. Then I open the Google Play app, hit the menu button and select acounts from which I'll select my old account with which I purchased all the apps. These apps wont show up under 'My Apps' and when I try to search and download it wants me to pay again.
I've tried all kinds of stuff like deleting the Google Play data, adding just one account at first and then the other but nothing seems to be working and it's really starting to piss me off. Any ideas?
Hi
I have recently found that when I do a clean install of a ROM with a full wipe any contacts I created on the Phone are lost. I had thought they were backed up by Google / Samsung but it doesn't seem to be ATM. This also affects my daughters phone.
So does anyone have information / ideas that would help me move / transfer all the contacts that are just on the phone to somewhere like Google or Hotmail etc. where they will be safe. My daughter has hundreds and I recently lost a similar amount. Once I know where its easy to transfer contacts too, then I will create all my new contacts in that place as well.
Thanks in advance for any experience / suggestions.
Cheers

Easiest option, I find, is to use just Google Contacts. You can export your SIM's contacts and import them on your phone into your Google account. After that the phone will sync the contacts automatically to the contact book in your online Google account. You could also e.g. create contacts in your online Google account and they will be synced to your phone and multiple devices. Link to Google Contacts
Thanks - My Contacts are now Synced to Google and Hotmail

Thanks so much. It worked better than I hoped. Once I imported my Contacts into Google - within a couple of minutes the phone showed all the Google contacts linked to / replacing (not clear to me) the ones in the phone. I think they are automatically linked by the phone in that when I deleted some in Google they stayed in the phone, but when I add to Google they appear as Google only in the phone. If I delete linked from the phone then it deletes Google as well..
For anyone finding this later I found this link; http://www.liveside.net/2012/02/26/google-is-now-a-connected-service-to-windows-live/ which explains that if you have a Windows Live Account (Hotmail, com, Live.com, Outlook.com etc) Windows Live will lookup all your Google Contacts too if you set it up. So good!!! This is just new this year. Works well too. Again best driven by the Phone Contacts which if I change or delete updates both..
In exploring my Google Dashboard, I realized that I have apps that I accidentally bought under my work Google account. If I ever leave this job, I want to retain updates on these apps. Does anybody know whether it's possible to transfer these to my personal account, which is where I typically buy my apps?
Hi there
I have been using the app FolderSync to sync all the files from my phone's internal storage to Google Drive on a daily basis just in case if I lose my phone, there will still be a copy of my files in the cloud which I can retrieve. However, I am not comfortable with leaving my files unprotected in the cloud.
I have done a fair bit of research but have not been able to find an app that can automatically encrypt all the files before syncing with my Google Drive. Apps like Boxcryptor require me to manually upload the files for it to encrypt my files but does not offer any kind of automatic syncing like FolderSync does.
It does not seem possible for me to link Boxcryptor with FolderSync to get the desired result of having my files encrypted then automatically synced with a folder in my cloud storage.
Has anyone encountered a similar issue and found a solution? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
