[Q] Bricked LS990 - Can't access recovery or download mode - Sprint LG G3

Hey guys, Been on XDA for a long time but never really had any issues until now.....
So I took the lollipop OTA and was waiting on a root method. I got the G3 rooted using the guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/guide-root-method-lg-devices-t3049772?nocache=1
Everything went fine and I was rooted and messing around when I went to uninstall the Xposed framework (not even sure why I wanted to...) anyway, once I hit reboot the phone rebooted but then got suck on the LG boot screen. I tried getting into stock recovery, but it showed up on the screen quickly and went back into the boot loop. I can't access download mode either....when I try it takes me straight to fastboot.
I am no adb or fastboot expert but I figured I would at least use adb comands to pull all the media files off of my internal memory (pics and vids of the kids) then use the LG flash tool to go back to stock. But when I open the command prompt adb devices doesn't show any devices listed....so no go there. Then I tried to reinstall laf.img but the fast boot command just sits there "waiting for device" and nothing ever happens.
I have literally spend all day at work trying to fix this...I've searched all over the forum and Google and can't find a method that will work for my situation. Please excuse my ignorance if I am not using these terms correctly. I really just want the pics off of my internal memory. I'll deal with unbricking later....but it seems like if I can't access recovery or download then I might not be able to do that either. Can anyone help? THANKS!

If you can please upload the screen your phone is on. Or possibly describe it a little more. If you can get adb working you can pull your whole picture directory(s). What OS are you running? Like windows/mac or linux?
---------- Post added at 08:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:02 PM ----------
On your computer if your on linux I have some files that I made that may help you. They may work on mac. If your on windows I will go ahead and link a tool. The files go and reboot your phone via adb and fastboot commands.

I'm on windows 7. when I go into recovery the screen shows Recovery mode. Then at the top, Error : boot certification verify.Secure booting error. Then the screen goes black and the led cycles red-blue.
If I try to get into download mode, the phone goes right to the fastboot screen. But then I cannot verify the device is connected by either adb commands or fast boot commands. Thanks

When your on one of the screens that work try these commands:
adb devices
fastboot devices
This should tell you if it is connected. Also what recovery are you running?

Ive tried both commands and neither show any connections. The fast boot and adb devices commands both return a blank line. and any other commands return an no connection error.
I tried installing twrp after the initial rooting process but it wasn't successful... but at that point I could still boot into the os. Then I screwed around with the Xposed framework and I've been stuck ever since.

I can't think of anything else if you can't get any connections working then you can't extract your photos and you can't boot. Only thing that I can thing to do is to go to sprint a get a new phone. If you don't mind please explain how you installed it to prevent more bricks.

Did u make sure u have good working version of the lge USB drivers? If u do, when u hold power up when phone is off and plug in the USB cable, your phone will turn on w the update firmware screen. Under com ports in device manager u should see your phone. Make sure u change your device port number to 41. Then flash tool will work.

Thanks to those who tried to help! Just wanted to give an update......
Here's what happened...I rooted ZV4 when I first got the phone and never installed any other roms or custom recovery. Root was broken when I installed the ZV6 OTA (I knew that would happen going in). So then I took the ZV8 OTA in hopes that I would be able to find a working root method after it was out for a while.
I rooted stock ZV8 with the guide listed in the first post (which has been updated since I originally used it). No problems.
I tried installing TWRP with the file I got from TWRP website specific to LS990. It failed and I can't remember why at the moment. I am still confused if I needed the bump'd version or not and I still am not sure what bump'd is (I've read about it) but that's my problem....
I was playing around granting SU permissions to all my apps that lost it at the OTA update and I wanted to uninstall the Xposed framework thru the app since it does not function in ZV8. When I went to uninstall, the app did its thing and rebooted the phone....and it never booted back up again.
At that point there was no access to recovery or download mode. It went straight to fastboot and I was never able to send any commands that did anything of use. I tried 3 different PC's, installing android sdk (with adb and fastboot) and LG drivers on all of them and I never got any communications to the phone except for one time where I was able to send fastboot commands that showed on the phone screen...but it kept hanging. I let it go for hours and it never finished/did anything. I tried fastboot commands to flash laf.img and recovery.img but nothing worked. I even used a Ubuntu live usb on 2 different PC's to just get the data off and try adb and fastboot but no comms there either.
Somehow I must have corrupted some of the partitions in the internal memory and I was not able to recover it. I know just enough to get me into trouble apparently. I've been flashing phones since my original Sprint Windows 6.1 touchscreen and never bricked one until now LOL.
I took the phone to Best Buy because I have the geek squad protection...but it is worthless for software issues...they wanted $150 deductible to replace the phone with a refurb...cheaper than a new phone but still worthless in my eyes for this issue. Then I went to sprint where the tech worked on it for 2 hours before he finally gave up. Sprint replaced my phone for $75...so not too bad. But I had to get their TEP, as luck would have it...it is open enrollment month for the protection so they gave me a $75 credit on my bill.
So the moral of the story...be careful messing around with the Xposed framework.

Just to let you know, it was your aboot. ZV8, L, aboot blocks bumped. So twrp is already bumped, err false signed. Well open bumped is way LG patched aboot.
Also windows sucks, use linux. Lol at less for fastboot

I'm having this exact problem too. Root went fine, but then when I flashed the recovery I got this same problem and it boots straight to Fastboot (when I'm lucky enough for anything to happen). Someone please help!

Run this command fastboot boot <recovery name here>
It will set your devices boot.img to twrp for one reboot then it will go back to your normal boot.img.

Did you try changing the action mode setting on the flash tool from "update DL" to "board DL"? Also make sure you have latest lg drivers and be on at least windows 7. I tried on vista and it will not work because you have to manually change the com port your device is on to com41 under the port section in device manager. Lgflash tool will say 41 but u actually have to change it. Let us know what happens. Oh and be sure phone is off and hold the " up" volume key then plug your phone into your computer

Thank you so much for your help! I bricked my G3, unfortunately, and found your steps! I am currently only getting the security error. I tried to reflash using lg flash tools, but I get a 'Model information check failed' error when i try to. I'm definitely using a tot file for the VS895 (which is my version). If there is any guidance you may be able to provide I would be very grateful!!
thank you!

Hows it going, have you tried selectiong "Board DL" instead of "Upgrade DL" on FlashTools?
Or the best thing id try to do is use the LG Firmware Extractor and using the TOT file for your model phone select and extract the following files..you may may have to change the extensions to .img after extracted
boot
aboot
recovery
laf
dbi
modem
persist
primartgpt
rpm
stl1
tz
And Follow Step 1

If any lg drivers are showing in device manager try uninstalling them and install the official drivers for your device at the lg website or google the most recent drivers and retry my steps. Does anything phone in device manager at all when you connect your phone

I started the phone

Good recovery was putting a optimus Lg one of the traditional way to copy some files to the SD and then open the mobile terminal and enter some commands, when he was on the last line error I came out there was not enough memory and I gave restart, well and stay there every time I get the following message I turn
fastboot mode started
udc_start ()
hopefully could guide me in resolving this problem
pardon my English but it is google translator
Ok, well, I don't know much about this, but once I figured out that in the SDK folder, together with ADB there is a tool called fastboot
So, open cmd.exe and type cd <path to your fastboot.exe folder>
Now on, if you type fastboot you will get a list of available commands.
The fact that your phone starts with that message should mean that your recovery (and boot aswell) cannot start. So, you should install a boot from fastboot tool (I GUESS, as I never had the chance to try it).
Another chance (which is lot easier) should be to use KDZ Update. So, search on XDA or Google for the KDZ tool and a .kdz update file for froyo 2.2.x
Then, connect your phone to the USB and disable LG modem from your control panel.
Open KDZ and select "3GQCT" as Type and "DIAG" as phonemode. Then select your .kdz file and start. The program will detect your phone and install the system + boot. It should work. If it doesn't, do it again with EMERGENCY as phonemode.
Just one recommendation, if the update fails, DO NOT UNPLUG THE PHONE AND DO NOT UNPLUG YOUR BATTERY or there will be a real chance to brick the phone.
Hope this helps, the second way worked for me, even if after a day i bricked my phone lol
EDIT: ciaox just made a VERY useful guide that you should follow to fix your phone. Click on this LINK
KDZ and off using the modem option LG: I
Computer> Manage> Device Manager> Disable modem lg
then start the KDZ in the two options you listed and I get the
following message:
12:54:10: Launching SW update
12:54:10: Unpacking KDZ
12:54:22: KDZ extracellular file
12:54:29: Files Were extracted.
12:54:29: LGMobileDL Load.
12:54:29: Port = -1
12:54:29: Connecting to phone
12:54:30: PHONE WAS NOT FOUND!
12:54:32: FINISHED === ===
I forgot to tell you that you must install msxml.msi (it comes together with KDZ updater).. if it still does not work, try to shake the phone, sometimes it helps.
Though, it would be better if you follow the guide provided!

[Q] "use genuine battery - powering off"

Hello, Guys. So I did a stupid thing today - I was poking around in the build.prop in my v20d P769. I changed the value of a line concerning the battery, something like "battery_genuine" - My thought was that it was going to enable some sort of alternate battery notification or icon or whatever, I'm not sure what I was thinking.
Anyway, long story short, I rebooted after editing build.prop and now when the phone turns on it just says "use genuine battery - powering off" and shuts off. I had previously uninstalled CWM (getting ready to manually apply v20f) so I can't get to recovery to mount /system. I have been trying all day to get the offline flash method to work and the damn thing won't work half the time. I went through the thread instructions to install small server and edit hosts file - then reboot - when the loopback ip's are in the hosts file the test link on the thread (127.0.0.1:9002) doesn't work and neither LG application will work. If I comment out the loopback lines and restart both of them will open but neither of them will do anything useful. LG Updater tool just says I have the latest software and the UptestEX_mod2_marwin application won't flash anything.
Hoping someone can help me out here so I can recover this phone.
boot the phone in fastboot mode, don't know how to do that with your model though
use fastboot to boot into any custom recovery by typing 'path_to_adb_toolkit_files\fastboot.exe boot your_recovery_image.img'
if fastboot hangs on <waiting for device> install usb drivers
then pull off build.prop, change that field to original value and push it back into the phone
sorry mate, can't explain more detailed
Either flash ICS uboot and xloader in fastboot mode and unbrick it after, or if you can access adb, try sometjing like the following:
cd to your adb directory on your PC
adb pull /system/build.prop (in a command prompt on your PC)
Modify the file (it will be in the adb folder)
adb push pathto/thefile/build.prop > /system/build.prop (again in the cmd)
Hope it helps

Thanks for the reply man - yeah I can't get to adb, that was my first though so i'm going to try fastboot, only problem is, I don't know how to boot fastboot. Is s/w upgrade mode the fastboot screen (volume up + plug in cable)?
Also, would anyone mind explaining why the small server only outputs "file not found" when attempting to start up the flash tool? The only way I can get the flash tool to even launch is to comment out the loopback lines in hosts. lol man it's times like this when I miss motorola!
*Edit - In case anyone wants to help on this front, here is the output I receive from small server when trying to open B2CappClient or UpTest or even hit the test link in the offline flash thread:

I recommended removing all lg drivers and etc. Redownload all files, disable firewall and antivirus. But first you need to install fastboot and flash the u-boot for ice cream.
Inside the fastboot zip by lelus is more instructions on how to set it up. And checkout the original thread about fastbooting the l9
And you might want to try on another PC,
You need a good and clean windows environment for all to work well. This is the problem with many people. Plus a lot of antivirus programs don't like the small server.

well, if you boot into a screen that is neither android nor recovery, it should be fastboot at least this applies to my phone
since the combination is one button + plug in cable i guess it's the right one
does it say fastboot mode in the top of the screen?

Well I managed to get to fastboot with the p940 script. The screen that comes up with "S/W Upgrade Please wait while upgrading...". this may be some sort of fastboot derivative but there's no response to "fastboot devices" at the prompt. Can I flash cwm through fastboot if my bootloader is locked? I had it installed with the bootstrap method.

This will offer some more help,

Hey don't flash ice cream and ect.
All you have to do is flash (in fastboot) the boot.IMG for the kdz you are on, and you're good to go.
Extract the boot.img from the kdz
Look at my guide. Or just wait until later tonight for me to upload it.
To tell you the truth, Lol, I did the same thing you did with the battery. I was fast enough to edit it before it shutoff. I had toolbox lite app installed.
CM 10.1 P769
Finally got it! Turns out, the default path for small server is c:\shttps\www - the problem I gave myself is that when I didn't extract to the c root, I copied from my L9 directory - when I copied none of the contents of \www copied with it, once I moved those files to the correct position it all went through as it should!
Thanks for your help guys!!

hahaha I saw this about 10 mins after I got it to boot! lol - oh well, I'm running 20f now, getting ready to root and see about unlocking the bootloader. Now that the flash tool is working correctly, the only thing I have to do is get a feel for the mirrored, wonky screen. I've been researching the bootloader method but could never get that flash tool to work correctly. I'm in the game now! WOOT!
Thanks for all your help man!

I recommended flashing 20d then 20b.

I didn't have a hard time, but then again I've studied my a** off, and I knew how to fix all problems that popped up. My advice to you is read all the threads about unlocking the bootloader. The video is good but it doesn't break it down enough.
Let me tell you about everything that can go wrong and how to fix it
Problems
1. After flashing the euro kdz your phone won't boot past the logo.
Okay, this problem will make things harder(but do able), because you have to hard reset the device by pressing/holding the vol (-) + home + power (let go of power button when the lg logo comes up)
Plus after a hard reset all data will be wiped and you will have to enable USB debugging on the wonky touch screen.
The chance of this happening is rare because you are not coming from a custom ROM.
2. After flashing you get a security error (or an error during the flashing process).
Now this one sucks because you will need to fastboot and flash the ice cream u-boot. Then put the phone in the s/w upgrade mode and perform the offline flash again.
I had this happen to me once, while flashing the wind kdz. Messing with fastboot is not hard but it takes time to understand it. Get familiar with it first before trying to unlock. I'll send you a link with some more info.
3.After flashing the euro kdz you find out you don't have root.
Sometimes rooting fails (dam computers)
Now I had this happen to me after flashing euro kdz (so no cwm) but I wasn't really worried about that because I had a signal and I could make/receive calls. I had a signal because when I was flashing I swapped out the euro radio (p760.fls) with the metropcs one (lgms769.fls)
Note: you have to extract the radio from the metro kdz and rename it to p760.fls
When flashing replace the 11th bin (with hex edited 11th bin for 20b) & the radio (from metro renamed).
Another thing don't rush the unlock. I waited about 3 to 4 hours before trying, plus I took a couple of calls on the 20b kdz. And I was on wifi.
I flashed the euro kdz at work and when I got home I turned on WiFi and waited another hour.
I'm not to sure about what the video says about turning off and flashing the radio.
When the unlock first came out, the instructions were to not turn off the device before unlocking.
When I flashed the euro kdz I was on the metropcs ROM.
This is what I recommend and did.
Enable USB debugging, show all touches, & allow install from unknown sources.
Leave your phone on normally(don't put it in s/w mode) and flash the euro kdz and hopefully no problems.
After waiting a couple of hours try the unlock command with Adb on your PC.
If all goes good the phone will take you to an inverted unlock screen, just press the volume up (make sure you press the Up button!)
This will take you to the official fastboot (but it's inverted), now in fastboot flash the cwm recovery image.
In cwm flash the touch screen fix and restore a backup.
Another thing make your own backup with the locked bl cwm (just in case you have to erase all data) make backup on external SD. Another thing, Lol ,make sure the backup is good, try to restore it. I have had several corrupted backups with cwm.
I know it's a lot to learn, but then again you want to be prepared.
Think of it like a final exam, Lol and you won't go wrong.
If you get lost just holla at me.

Soft-Bricked GT540g vs frozen KDZ Updater

Okay guys, I think my phone has a soft brick (no boot logos), so I'm trying to do some restoration... but I'm not having much success.
So, I found a solution in XDA (/showthread.php?t=825173&page=3) saying that I should plug my phone in without battery, SD nor chip and disable the "LG Modem" on my Device Manager. Afterwards, start KDZ Updater and configure it to CS_EMERGENCY. Then I should install a 2.1 French firmware and as soon as KDZ finishes I'd plug off my phone, plug it back in and start it in DL mode again, this time flashing a file named "OUT.kdz", which gives back the boot logos.
Problem: KDZ Updater hangs as soon as I press "Start". It simply freezes when it's in CS_EMERGENCY. I have no solution to this whatsoever, and I also have another thread with previous problems I ran into (Soft-Bricked LG GT540 Optimus).
These are the best forums I've found for any kind of phone, so I'm positive I'll get the help I need, even if I might need to wait some time. Kudos to the admins and every member for taking part of such a great community!

I've fixed all my issues! I'll paste what I said in another thread. Yay for one-full-year struggles!
Just wanted to leave my 2 cents here, I've been trying to do my best since around august 2014, no success. 2 days ago I retried this, and I DID IT! I will tell everyone what I did very shortly:
My problem that I solved: I can boot, device works like a charm. But: no boot logos, no recovery.
My solution for TL;DR: UNINSTALL ALL DRIVERS FROM DEVICE MANAGER 1ST, then reinstall. After that, flash a fastboot ROM and use it to WIPE ALL THE DATA IN YOUR PHONE! THIS was what I needed and was never explained: you had to WIPE the old data in order to get the boot screens back.
IN THIS ORDER (THANK YOU to those people from previous replies, gathering all your info was of great value):
Uninstall all of your phone drivers from your PC!!! This is what made most of my headaches go away, just use Device Manager and uninstall anything from LGE. After that, plug in your device in your USB ports (always BACK ports, not front ports, important). It should detect all drivers and download them.
IF it fails (it generally does with LGE USB Modem), you can go to Device Manager > Unknown Device (the one that wasn't recognized) > Right Click and Update > Choose 2nd option, then choose "choose from a list of local controllers" (or whatever the button says). After that, scroll down to LG Electronics, Inc. and install what didn't install.
I also found these drivers, but I did not test them: http://www.mediafire.com/download/p693hcz6kkouh19/USB_Driver_LG_GT540.zip
Huzzah!
Now you're set to begin:
FIRST thing you wanna do is a factory reset, this is something I'd forgotten with time, don't make the same mistake as I did. You can do it by turning your phone on and pressing Volume +/- & Home & Quick Search buttons all together for 5 seconds (it works, be patient and wait for it, even if you open the camera or any other stuff).
Download this Google SDK Tools (unzip and put the folder in C:\ drive) and this Fastboot drivers for GT540 (unzip and put the files inside the folder in C:\android-sdk).
Skip this next line if you know your ROM has fastboot.
Now, if you don't have a ROM with fastboot, I recommend you use either European Open+Fastboot or V20C Orange France Fastboot ROM.
Click to collapse
Since you have Fastboot enabled, now all you need to do is turn off your device (all this with its battery on it, no weird things) and hold the Camera button before turning it back on. This should take you either to a black screen, or simply to no display, like me. Either one will work anyways.
Now press the Windows key > Type cmd and open it with Right Click > Run as Administrator.
In it, type all this, command by command (you can paste by right clicking):
cd C:\android-sdk
fastboot -w
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase system
fastboot -w
fastboot reboot
Click to collapse
And now it's go time! Do what everyone else says in here: Take out your phone's battery, SD and SIM cards, fire KDZ Updater up as Administrator (If your KDZ freezes, then it's either faulty or you did not install msxml, look for a good KDZ that comes with that file and delete your current one), choose CS_Emergency PhoneMode and:
1-Plug your phone while holding the volume DOWN button (don't worry! My phone didn't show "Download Mode" either, if you hear the Windows "Somethingpluggedin" Bump noise, it's ok).
2-Flash French V20A
3-Unplug your phone once KDZ says "==FINISHED==".
4-Plug it once again, holding the volume DOWN button.
5-Flash out.kdz (remember! it's CS_Emergency).

LG Flashtool 2014 / LG-D160

Hi,
my LG-D160 is rooted and with twrp.
In the past i installed an unofficial Cyanogen 11 for LG-D170, which was not fully working. So i restored the backup with twrp which i made before Cyanogenmod flashing with twrp. In the hardware information of android i could see the model name "LG-D170", which is wrong. The phone seems to work.
Now i want to flash stock rom kdz. I use the lg flashtool 2014, Windows 10 64 bit.
If i start into Download Mode / Firmware Update (by pressing the "volume up" button and connection the USB cable + also holding "volume up") and start the LG flashtool 2014. In the flash tool "software upgrade in progress" stops at 2% and tells me to switch of phone, put usb cable .... and to "retry".
Any ideas ? Thank you.

Try to manually flash the files, see if the volume up mode recognizes your phone in fastboot, if it does, you can try out my tool (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6vSHGXxJIWmVjRVMlRSQW9HWWs) and from there you can manually flash it.
You need to change the info on the build.prop to the correct model before the Flash Tool will work.

in /system/build.prop:

On android GUI:

So iam confused.

Looking at an install guide for the cm11 rom, I see that you are supposed to have flashed another bootloader. That is probably the issue here. You would have to see if you can find a way to just flash the stock bootloader and then try the Flash Tool again.

LG V30 Bricked

Hi,
I tried to upgrade my LG V30+ US998 to android Pie via TWRP but after the upgrade and system reboot the device got stuck in LG logo.
The download mode isn't working (device not being detected).
LGUP shows the device as "unknown" and adb is not detecting the device either.
I can't boot into TWRP anymore and flashing via LG flash tool 2014 fails (asks for server connection!).
I installed all the tools and LG mobile drivers on another computer and had no luck!
Do I have any chance of recovering my phone?

Why can't you boot to TWRP?
Use the hardware button dance, if you must.
__
Are you using the latest Dev Patched LGUP from the Pie KDZ threads? Uninstall any prior version and read the instructions carefully.

Your phone is not bricked. No one ever bricked their phone trying to update to Pie. Being stuck on logo is not bricked.
Tons of people get stuck on logo. So what? Then they re-flash 20h or whatever.

Reinstall LG Mobile drivers again.
Uninstall Dev Patched LGUP completely. Delete the folder from Programs/LG Electronics to make sure.
Re-install the Pie Dev Patched LGUP. Use the SetDev.bat in right click Administrator mode.
Then REBOOT the PC. You've installed two major PC components and Windows needs to process that.
Go into Download mode MANUALLY before opening LGUP. ONLY open LGUP from the desktop shortcut, not the folder icon.

Phone in download mode not recognized by the computer (tried on two computers).
If I connect the phone into the computer and open the LGUP it shows as "Unknown"
For some reason TWRP got wiped out after flashing Pie rom and I cannot boot into twrp to flash the old Ore rom.
I finally managed to fix my phone.
Below are the steps:
1- boot the phone im fastboot (connect to tbe computer via USB cable and press and hold both power and volume down until phone reboots then quickly release the power button and hold the volume down until the fastboot menu appears)
2- copy the twrp image into adb folder and rename to twrp.img
3- download and copy a working rom (in zip format) and paste into micro sd card and insert into phone
4- open the command prompt as administrator and navigate to adb folder then type the following commands in sequence
Adb devices
fastboot devices
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
fastboot boot twrp.img
Now your phone will boot into twrp and you can install the Oreo zip rom into phone and enjoy using your LG phone again!
Thank you!
I've added this to the US998 Pie KDZ thread. That KDZ is very wonky. It's the only Pie people have problems flashing. Probably because LG has not yet released Open Market US998 and the one we are using is technically for U.S. Cellular US998.
I had no trouble flashing it myself -- on my backup V30+(former LS998) going straight from Nougat (never updated, it was my backup phone) to Pie through Dev Patched LGUP Refurbish mode. But lots of other people seem to have problems.
On my daily phone, I'm still on rooted stock Oreo with Magisk and Xposed mods.

I think part of my problem was the Pie ROM.
I have the US998 UCL version and I've read that the LG only released the Pie update for LG V30 US998 model with the Buyer suffix (1CL, UCL, UCK) and US998Z (UCL) only. But I could be wrong!

Right. LG has not yet released the Open Market USS98 KDZ yet. Theory is LG is waiting for the Sprint Pie KDZ to be accepted by Sprint. Open Market USS98 is the official North American carrier unlocked variant that needs to work with all carriers. So, Open Market US998 Pie KDZ (if ever released) will incorporate testing results from the long-delayed Sprint LS998 Pie KDZ (whenever it's finally released).
