Freeze, freeze, freeze - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My N9 freezes in about 2 minutes every time I've done a reboot. I recently updated Nova beta and the usual updates in the Play Store. How can I discover what (app) is causing this?

I would recommend flashing the factory image and seeing if you still have the problem. If you do it's time to rma the device.

If you have root, you can use System Tuner (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ccc71.pmw) to prevent apps from auto-starting on boot (watch the video on the app page).

Well Authenticator Plus had my N9 freeze over and over again...

There is a safe mode. Hold power button, then hold power off, then press OK. After reboot only original Google apps are started. Does your N9 run normal trying this?

NEXUS 9 Freezing too
I too am having problems with the screen freezing too. Only way out is to force a reboot by holding the power button. Image on screen becomes garbled, and if sound is playing at the time of freeze, a loud time is continuously heard. Occurs almost exclusively while using graphic intensive apps, and after extended periods of use. Also, usually feels warm/hot too the touch on the device back near the camera's corner. Has occurred while running stock 5.0.2, and while running Dirty Unicorns 5.0.2 with Elemental X Kernel. Has only been occurring over the past 2 weeks or so, and it didn't correspond to any OTA'S or similar system change. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I am now trying to see if underclocking the CPU/GPU help prevent this, and turned on Elemental X's Thermal Throttling in case over heating is the issue.

My Nexus freezes at least once per day, and lags, and automatically reboots at least once per week. Glad 5.1 will be rolled out soon to us. I hope it fixes all these issues.

mine has stutters all day - used stock and AICP and happens on both. it's almost always when using chrome. the quickest way to get the screen active again is to swipe down on the nav bar.

Yep Chrome is where I get my freezes. Happens on my N5 too. Might just be Chrome or maybe Adaway?

Use Chrome beta, the normal Chrome behaves oddly outside of the Windows version. I disabled Chrome on my Nexus 4 as well after giving it L.

Chrome & 4.2.2

Chrome still freezes and locks the N10. Have to reboot so the software update didnt change this for me. I will just stick to Dolphin as I get no freezes using that browser.

Can you reproduce the crash? I've used Chrome, on 4.2.2, and have had no crashes (I don't even think I had any crashes in the past either).

Same.. Never a crash on 4.2.1 or 4.2.2 and I've always used Chrome..
I think it might just be my device as I got freezes with chrome from the day I bought it. I stop using Chrome and lockups stopped. Just got the update two days ago and I used Chrome for the first time and the first website I went too and was reading an article, it froze up and I had to do a hard reset. I'm all stock and not rooted.

returned?
I haven't had any crashes or any issues that everyone else has had. Maybe its because I waited to buy my nexus 4 and nexus 10 until February but if I did experience any of those issues I would have returned the device. Why bother with it? That's just my two cents but thank god I haven't had any issues, Yet!! And hopefully I never do
No need to return as I perfer Dolphin anyways, which solved my problem. I bought it from Staples in Jan. and would have been easy to return if I chose too.

Mine crash like nobody business using chrome at 4.2 or 4.2.1
The problem was fix for me after running 4.2.2, by the way I am using latest chrome beta as it perform much better.
Odd, got mine in November and have never had a chrome crash/freeze or hard restart. Admittedly, my average use is less than 3 hours daily, but still...

Did you try the newest Chrome beta?
Chrome still crashes for me.
I have Chrome neatly frozen with Titanium Backup since I got the N10 (I had terrible experience with it on my phone). Never had any problems related to it.
This thread begs my question. I am using Chrome Beta but what do you do with the native Chrome? I have both installed because it seems like Chrome is pretty well integrated into the system and there isn't a uninstall option.
I could freeze it but don't want it to cause any issues.
Any thoughts or experiences?

I use Chrome beta, and have had 1 hard-freeze in Chrome in approx 20 hours use since the upgrade to 4.2.2. Being the beta version of Chrome it can occasionally crash also, but its not too often this happens now either. I don't mind Chrome crashing every few hours as its only a 3 second job to press the button on my homescreen with my tabs still loaded when it re-opens, but freezes are not cool.
Before that, I was on cyanogenmod and Chrome would get a freeze every 5 hours or so.
Only had occasional freezes in Chrome beta since early December. In over 100 hours uptime since installing 4.2.2 I've only used Chrome (not beta!) and had zero lagging, zero freezes and no reboots.
... beamed from my Nexus 10 to your planet
I was having major problems with chrome after 4.2.2 it was just being sluggish and locking up for seconds or more at a time, rebooting seems to fix it and the problem is intermittent.
I have always had lock up and restart problems in chrome on my Nexus 10. I cannot see a particular repeatable browser action and/or site that causes the lock up, but the process is always the same:
Browsing, chrome hangs, screen buttons freeze, and after multiple screen touches the device will shut down and restart.
Happens perhaps 3-4 times a week
I have also had it lock up like that one time while using the cameras, but only once. I have owned the device since launch.

I had crashes several times per day with Chrome (beta and stock)and 4.2.1. I've had zero crashes under 4.2.2 with Chrome beta. I haven't tried the stick version under 4.2.2.
I used to continually have issues with chrome locking or rebooting. Not sure if it was the change to 4.2.2 or the fact I finally bit the bullet and rooted then installed Seeder and LagFix Free but I haven't had a lock up since and things seem to be running faster than ever!!!! Still stock rom and kernel
I still get crashes with 4.2.2, but it's much reduced compared to 4.2.1. I used to be getting several a day and now it's every couple days.
For those with issues, have you performed a factory reset?

Games leave speaker turned on after minimizing?

So I downloaded Asphalt 8 just today and I have this bad problem, when I launch the game and minimize it whenever, I can hear the speaker still hissing, and never stopping, while most games you minimize and the speaker turns off after 2 seconds. This app keeps the speaker on, also keeps the phone awake, and drains the battery.
Anybody experiencing the same issue?
Might want to contact the developer on that. In the mean time you can just force close the app (right next to uninstall).

Closing it from the multitasker works just fine, but it's still quite annoying. I very often close all of the opened apps, and I was just thinking about doing it less often, but this changes everything.
Can anyone confirm on having the same issue? Or is it only me?
This issue is really bad, as the battery drain is increased by twice as much if you have speaker on and phone is prevented from sleeping.
I NEED to know, because it's either the app, or bad combination of apps I have on my Phone + Games. I have a Nexus 4.
I also have this with Need For Speed Most Wanted, haven't had this with any other games.

Let's have a discussion. For those still getting slowdowns and crashes

I thought I had this problem kicked when Android 4.3 was released.. But alas.. It has returned but in a different form. I've been debugging this for over a week now and narrowing it down to purely Chrome (and Chrome Beta), Simple Image Wallpaper or possibly Nova launcher.. I've seen others saying they still have this problem so.. Let's discuss this and try to narrow down the problem in a civil manner.
ROM: RasbeanJelly 4.3.1
PAGapps 10/10
Kernel: Stock
Launcher: Nova
Wallpaper: Simple Image Wallpaper
Installation: Fresh wipe of data/cache/dalvik/system before flashing
No process managers (Greenify etc) or any of that stuff.
Old symptoms: (SurfaceFlinger) Device would seemingly slow to a crawl out of no where and reboot itself..
New symptoms: The first thing I notice when the device is starting to nose divie is the keyboard won't appear when touching the address bar in Chrome.. Another thing I will notice is that the back navigation bar button no longer works as a back button in the browser to return to the previous page. Usually shortly thereafter Chrome will crash and my wallpaper will be removed and only showing black. Once I'm to this point neither the AOSP browser or Chrome will stay launched more than 20 seconds or so before closing themselves back to the home screen. Continuing to play could result in a SystemUI crash or complete slowdown of the device till the point it is unusable. Ultimately a reboot is needed. It usually takes 2-3 days of uptime for this to show itself.. All runs fine until then.. I've reproduced this with Chrome and Chrome beta so far..
RAM usage: At the point of the device becoming unusable OS Monitor reports about 200MB of RAM available and SystemUI process using the most RAM at roughly around 180MB.. Nothing in the process tree seems abnormal. Upon a reboot I have roughly 500MB free..
I've since removed Chrome, and since removed Simple Image Wallpaper.. And going to go another run at seeing if this shows itself again.. If this reproduces it I will remove Nova launcher next.
Side note: I run nearly identical configuration on my Nexus 4 and never experienced any of this.
The only crash I've ever had was while using Chrome. Switched to AOSP browser and its been fine. Chrome crashes my other devices too. I really think the problem lies with Chrome.

Try freezing chrome and using aosp browser. Its much better. Chrome on the nexus 10 is bad with crashes for me as well.

Chrome crashed my S2 all the time before I finally stopped using it. It's been pretty good on my Nexus 7, but like I said it has crashed my Nexus 10 so now I avoid it. Obviously it's better on some devices than others, but it's still pretty awful.

So I just had a memory hogging half crash without Chrome installed
Was laying here for 4hrs straight watching TV and football while constantly using the tablet for internet.
Just like always the first sign is the keyboard either stops showing up or auto closes itself a few key presses in. Then the whole system starts slowing down over the course of five minutes. Home screen redraws, black wallpaper, 5 second freezes. Apps barely stay open long enough to use them before just closing to the home screen.
OS Monitor had SystemUI eating 200MB of RAM.. And launcher wasn't even shown at all. Only 128MB of free RAM. Then it did a fake reboot.. I saw the boot logo but it only lasted a few seconds.. My uptime stayed in tact.. Now the SystemUI is only using 134MB of RAM and Launcher is showing again using 203MB with a total of 370MB free and the tablet works like normal again.
I'm completely unconvinced the memory leak is solved.. I've seen enough and tested this enough.. Going back to stock.. Only theory left is it's the ROM

I just went back to stock from aokp after getting lots of freezes and so I can get the 4.4 ota and I haven't had any issues yet. I think the issues were with the ROM though I had better battery life with it

I have been running the latest AOKP nightlies with Franco Kernel (no phone.apk for now) and have the normal, occasional issues with running nightlies. I don't get crashes and slow downs except for when I used Chrome, which is why I run the standard aosp browser.
I'm running everything stock on my N10, and I use Chrome as my only browser. Haven't had any slow down and reboot since the 4.3 update
There is still some memory leakage as available RAM will start at ~700 MB on a reboot, and slowly drop to about 500 MB. The difference I've noticed with 4.3 vs. 4.2 is this, on 4.2, the available RAM will keep dropping down to say 200 MB before the device will freeze and reboot, whereas on 4.3, the available RAM will drop to just below 500 MB, and then it will kill some apps before returning to 500+ MB

Hm, it's been sitting on "sending bootloader" for a while now. Should I be worried?

Welp, doing it over on a different port and cable seems to have handled it.
Flashed it.
Might be placebo but it seems much smoother.
Also the recent bug is fixed and the toggles in the Account Sync have been changed.
Images flashed......"optimizing app 98 of 154" so first 5.1 boot should be soon.
Anybody tested this bug?

What about wifi performance and the audio bug wile/straight after charging/docked?
I don't understand what the bug is. I never experienced it before, but I can try to replicate it in 5.1 if you explain what I am supposed to do clearly.

What I got is, sometimes when starting the N10 while charging, there is no sound at all, and I have to reboot the N10 without charging to get the sound back.
I tried with 5.1 and so far, 5-6 times, no bug, but as I said is only happening sometimes before...
Audio Bug Squashed?
It looks like 5.1 has fixed the audio bug. It has for me at least.

Using the default Launcher3, not really. The Google Launcher lags when pulling down the tray, and lags all other animations for that matter. It always has since 4.4, but I put up with it because I like the GEL. It doesn't lag anywhere else thankfully, so it's your call.
On March 10th I did a factory image update to 5.1 but did not wipe user data on both my Nexus 10 and 5.. At least for me, this is the best version of Lollipop I've experienced.
My Nexus 10 was more stable than my Nexus 5 on any 5.0.x release but it seems that all the issues I'd been experiencing are resolved. On 5.0.x my Nexus 5 experienced the memory leak causing UI slow downs, odd reboots, total freezes needing power cycles and frequent disconnects of both WiFi and my cell network.
Android 5.1.0 did break the K9 email reader but that was fixed this morning and Jota+ SMB support currently is not functioning. On the Nexus 10 my battery stats still does not update always showing 100% charge even when its been off the charger for hours. Its been like that for a long time including with KitKat.
I am rooted and use a number of app beta versions including Nova Launcher, GMD Gesture Control and GMD Auto Hide Software keys, Viper4Android and they all worked before and after the OS update. That is a little surprising as previous Lollipop 5.0.x updates had broken more apps when they were first released. For the first time in a long time MX Player Pro still worked after an OS upgrade.
This was what the Lollipop release should have been. I'm happy especially as my Nexus 5 is as reliable as it was with KitKat.
That's great. Smooth
My 5.02 Nexus got an OTA to 5.1 last night (I'm in the UK). Everything seems fine and I am really happy that I have a tablet that is still supported.

Is anyone getting a screen freeze? Basically the screen just freezes but the unit seems OK ie it's not a system crash. It needs resetting to work again.

Sometimes, but always related with Chrome playing videos.
Hi.
I have narrowed it down to when i bring up google search with the swipe up gesture. Once on google search the screen becomes unresponsive. But a can reboot by pressing the power button and choosing 'reboot now'. I may try and reinstall it.
This only started happening with 5.1.

In my case I have that feature replaced by a more useful one: a handy launcher:

It never freezes.

Nexus 9 keeps closing background apps

Hi guys, can anyone tell me how can I fix this situation, because when I'm using my Nexus 9 most of the times when I minimize an app and open other, most of the time the app that I minimize will restart.
Did a factory defaults and options in developper seem to be ok, no restritctions regarding apps on backgroung.
Usually I play Star wars Galaxy of heroes, and if I change to discord (chat app) when I return it restarts my game
I also noticed that Ram availability is low, and I did a factory default 2 days ago, only installed the game and discord, nothing else.
Any suggestion?? Should I Root and Install a new ROM, if so what would you recommend?
I would prefer to Keep the actual OS if there's a fix for it
Thanks
I can't help but wonder if this is similar to what mine does. The apps in the recent display disappear -not all of them but definitely 50%. This does not happen on my N5X. I can't say when it started but at least 4 months ago.

Hi, the apps don't disappear, the tabs are there, they simply restart when I select them instead of just changing back to the previously running app.
It's kind of annoying when I'm on the middle of a game and want to check out something else, if I switch to chrome or other app there is a big risk that the game will restart and I will lost any progression made...same happens with other apps.
