[Q] 14.3.2.5 still rootable? - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Okay I'm hoping someone can clear up my confusion.
I've got a 8.9 HDX 2.2 (16gb) I managed to pick up for $40 new. Unfortunately, it auto updated extremely quickly on me and I'm now on system build 14.3.2.5_user_325001120 from 2014.08.05.
I've been reading the forums on here for the past couple of days, and this appears to be the exact timeframe in which all easily searchable information vanishes on me. I'd like to completely replace the stock OS with the nexus 4.2.2 one ggow has been working on - assuming it's possible of course.
My problem has been that depending on the thread I search through rooting is either "possible", "totally impossible", "extremely difficult", or "well, I've got it working ...". Things would be different apparently if I had almost any other build of the stock OS other than the version I'm on:
3.2.4? No problem
3.2.8? Perfectly rootable, no problem there either
anything larger or smaller - also no problem since you can either update or rollback (at least on the Thor).
Anyway, before I get too much more confused, can someone give me a quick definitive yes or no, and then point me at the right starting point? I have no troubles reading more before starting, I just wanna be sure I'm reading intelligently.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, 3.2.5 is easy to root with towelroot. Get the tool here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hdx/development/hdx-toolkit-revived-gui-t2987043
Once you're rooted, enable airplane mode immediately. Next you'll probably want to get downgraded to 3.2.3 and install TWRP so you can use any custom ROM, so have a read here

thanks for the assist

Thanks, I'm checking it all out now. Hopefully I'll get it all to work. Proceeding slowly, as this was the last tablet in the valley we could find at this price (and we checked pretty hard - $40 is a steal for a new in box, even if it is the older 2.2 version).
I've mostly understood the guides, there are a couple of places where I get lost by someone who doesn't speak English as a primary language - but you've definitely pointed me in the right direction. I should have this done in a couple of days.

'new' update for 4.3 every few days, lose root permissions each time

Nexus 7, 2013, 16 gigs, wifi model.
Every few days(sometimes once a day) I get a 'new' android 4.3 update, which once it reboots into the teamwin bootloader, and finishes installing the update(which always seems to work for first 2 steps but says no contents in file, then 2 errors after) I lose root access and it asks if I want to reapply(which I do) and it loads as normal on a restart. I am with build number JWR66N now, but the info page on the TWRP window shows it updates JWR66N to (And I forgot the number here, but its different)
So I'd like to know, is it normal to have 'constant' android updates like this, and if not, what build number should I have?
I have had this issue since about a week after I got my nexus, its been rooted ever since, but in an attempt to fix this issue(Which is just annoying, I doubt its causing any real damage) I unrooted the nexus, updated it(Manually) and re-rooted it using the wugfresh rootkit.
What exactly is the issue here, and how can I fix it?

really this is just an issue I have and nobody else has seen it? Nobody at all has had this problem and knows the fix? Well gee!
Another bump just incase, its happened again: Update yet nothings actually changed, had to 'swipe to fix' root permissions in bootlader menu.
Here we are again, and i REALLY want to get this fixed, and i just can't accept that 'I'm the only bloody nexus 7 user world frakin wide who has this issue.
So here I am again hoping for some help.
Build JWR66N currently, every few days it tries to update android OS, and it FAILS TO UPDATE, (IT wants to update to JSS15R i think)
New update is 53.8 mb,
Someone please help me out here, how do I get it to either accept the update, or stop freaking out about it?

So from all this time, you weren't able to find your answer using the power of internet?
Stock OTA updates cannot be applied with custom recoveries. That's why it's failing.
JSS15R is 8MB though, not 53.8MB. Either way, you can go back to full stock, recovery included after backing up your stuff. Then update, and reroot + re-install a custom recovery.
Aside from that, you're not really in the good section so don't be surprised you don't get any answer. This is strictly a N7 question, and XDA has a N7 sub section...

Yes, Must that I foolishly thought this was a ANDROID device and this may have been a similar issue(searched n7 forums and saw nothing) - and even with all the googling, I got nothing. BUT Now that I have 'followed your advice' (God I hope I can get my stuff back, backup didn't go as smooth as I had hoped, and 2 of my fav games I had to copy/paste myself to save them) All I've managed to do now was reset my device back to complete stock settings.... and this morning, Low and behold: SYSTEM UPDATE, ONCE AGAIN, same bloody one, same bloody problem, WILL NOT INSTALL.
So thanks. Next please? (Sorry if I sound a little angry, but I am, this forum, at least I THOUGHT, was full of people who liked to help others and KNEW what they were talking about, not trolls who tell people to 'use the search button' or go elsewhere for help. Honestly, after 2-3 hours a night googling this issue, for 3 weeks give or take now, trust me, I know its not like I have anywhere but here to go, the only reason I'm HERE, in THIS subforum, was because similar issues were posted about right here... more similar than anywhere else.)
Anyways, now I got a wiped device which I hope I can at least get back to where I was. Knowing NOW it had nothing to do with being stock or not, its simply unable to install update.

you cant update your phone if it is rooted you have to unroot for that or just temporary unroot the option is available in supersu /superuser
and some apps like root keeper and you have to be on stock recovery

[Q] Hi guys! My introduction that ends in ? ?'s

I'm happy to say I will be an owner of a Kindle Fire HDx 7in.- lte/4g- 32 gb tablet. A Thor? Unless that is just the wireless one. I was contemplating an ipad for weeks, but what I wanted was easily $550- So when I saw the specs on this tablet at half the price, I pushed the button! Picked it up at Amazon's $100 off sale tuesday. $285 with tax. Minus $78 in amex points- grand total of $200 and change
My past modding was on the old white PDN e-reader that was turned into a touch tablet. lol. That had cupcake on it or was it donut??:silly: That's where I learned the basics of adb (I'm pretty bad at it but can follow directions and get the job done, at least 7-8 years ago. I'm pretty rusty at adb now. The toolkits that you guys put together spoiled me- but I did at one time do it the old fashioned way. I hope never again!!! I went cross eyed. Oh, forgot the huawei hs7 too- That took some doing too. That was after the PDN.
I graduated to the TF 101- rooted and rom'd that till it was replaced by the Nexus 7 original-I will never buy a new-never before released- product again after that one, Still have it, passed it to my daughter and she loves it. 3 months after I was one of the first owners, they dropped the price, doubled the storage space to 32 gb, and gave compensation to everyone in the world but us here in the USA. My relationship with Asus products is over. Somewhere along the way I got a nook wifi and hacked that too.
I moved next to samsung, modded the galaxy nexus, the orig. Note, a Note 8 wifi, have a Mega att version ( locked bootloader, and now unrootable on kitkat 4.4 2 so far. TR v. 1-2-3 does not work for it) Love the Note 8, but the screen is a bit fuzzy- so it was the ipad or the kindle hdx. The bargain won. With similar specs, I 'm giving it a try.
Along my history- Never had any trouble or lossed a phone or tablet due to bad flashing or modding. I read 3-4 times or more, and I follow directions pretty well to the letter.
Here is my question. Sorry if I bored you. ( Looked for an intro thread, but didn't find one.) When I get this tablet on Friday, I don't want it to auto update. I don't want to change the build prop. So after I make my adjustments, I want to make sure it doesn't update on me. Does it update over internet data connection, or just wifi?
Here is what I want to do. I Will not connect to wifi. Will check the build number I am on. If I have to, I will manually update to the best safest build by putting it in the root of the sd card, and going to update tool- not connected to the internet, and install. I have been reading all the threads here. What is the safest build if I want to possibly unlock the bootloader when it is released?? and of course root, and install google playstore?
Using the toolkit( v.0.94) I will:
1. Install driver.
2. Use TR v1 and root. Probably with the toolkit. @Faznx92- great job pulling it all together in one place. Thank you. Will by using Toolkit v.0.94.
3.. Install supersu.
4. I don't want to mess with safestrap for now, so I will pass on that. Is that OK to do??
5. Block OTA updates with #4- Does this still work on the latest, safest build?
6. Install the exposed framework, and modules, and check appropriate boxes, Reboot in between installs.
7. Install the 4 google apks in the instructions- manager, services, store, framework- and reboot.
8. Check if OTA updates are indeed blocked looking for the OTA update failed!! :
9. turn on wifi and get tmobile free data started.
Is there any way to BU original firmware before installing HDxposed stuff and google apps? Without safestrap? ( I never used that before and it intimidates me a little I also understand it is a little iffy to remove it safely. Can you just re-install a manual update to recover if things go south? After reversing all the apks, modules, root, etc. after a factory reset?
To undo the install of the play store, you just uninstall all of the above and unroot via supersu? And reverse the OTA blocking?
Does this sound like a good plan? It's what I picked up after reading for the last 24 hrs.- not straight of course!!:silly: Did I miss anything important?? Do I have anything backwards?? Would love some feedback. My first preference would be to leave it alone for a few weeks, but my priority is to avoid the updates, but be able to use and set up my tablet the way I want.
If the bootloader is ever cracked and released- Yes I have read the deed is done, but in testing- I would like to install a stable custom recovery, make good backups, and be able to reinstall if things go south any stable rom I have tucked away.
Thank you for your time if you read this whole post!!

Most of your questions have been answered before but I will try my best to re-answer them. I will try to clear up any misguided understanding you may have.
-Does it update over internet data connection, or just wifi?
+It updates over a internet connection.
-What is the safest build if I want to possibly unlock the bootloader when it is released??
+We don't know yet. Stay on the version you're on for now.
-4. I don't want to mess with safestrap for now, so I will pass on that. Is that OK to do??
+If you don't know much about what it does it's best for you not to worry. Yes, it's fine to leave safestrap alone.
-5. Block OTA updates with #4- Does this still work on the latest, safest build?]
+Yes, it works. The only time it may change up is if Amazon pushes a update with different package names or functions.
-Is there any way to BU (Back-up?) original firmware before installing HDxposed stuff and google apps without safestrap?
+No. I'm not aware of any other way to backup the stock rom.
-Can you just re-install a manual update to recover if things go southafter reversing all the apks, modules, root, etc. after a factory reset?
+You can't re-install a update. You can factory reset it.
-To undo the install of the play store, you just uninstall all of the above and unroot via supersu? And reverse the OTA blocking?
+There is no need to uninstall play store before a factory reset because the reset wipes it out. You should un-root via SuperSU and remove my ota block. (I reset while root but was unsure how safe it was. It did work out in the end without issue.)
Keep the wifi off once you undo the ota block and then factory reset so you don't update. Once the reset is done, re-install the blocker. I'm not sure if you need to remove safestrap before a factory reset.
To make clear:
If you install a ota blocker it's good to check that it works by being connected to the net and then going to Settings->Device->System Updates->Check now. If it says Last update failed it is working else it is not.
The current roms for the hdx require Hashcode's safestrap. But to get the rom's working you need a backup of the stock rom or you could use the backup he provided. Once a slot is made you would install the rom zip to the slot.
I believe safestrap works be emulating a new system/data/cache partition in a file as a full rom to the bootloader. I recommend blocking ota before you make a backup or installing a basic stock rom. If you create and install the stock rom to a rom slot without blocking ota, the amazon system files are still in place to call for a update and hand it off to the system and bootloader.
Safestrap is safe as long as you do not touch the stock rom but only to make a backup of it.
If you don't feel comfortable using safestrap then don't.
Quick word of advise, you should include the version of your device when asking questions for that version. I'm guessing your on 13.3.2.4, the current latest.
Also I highly recommend staying on your current version and not moving forward.
Last thing, give this a read.
I hope I answered your questions as clear as possible.
Anybody else please clear up anything I missed.
Also good luck with your device and play safe.
Thank you so much Faznx92 for reinforcing all that I read ( lots in a short time period). I didn't want to mix up the info I read from the beginning of the year to where this tab is now. You did clear up anything I was unsure about. Thank you! And safestrap- I am not comfortable with it at all- there is no safestrap for my Mega, all my other tech toys have unlocked bootloaders. So I have absolutely no experience with this custom recovery. I am used to CWM and TWRP. Totally comfortable with them, although I have to admit kitkat twisted my arm to try TWRP since that was the only way to flash those roms on a lot of tablets and phones. Now I am partial to that. So I won't say no to safestrap, just now when an unlock is so close. If a safestrap was released for my Mega, I would definitely give it a try.
Oh, I know to report what build I am on when asking questions- that's just polite and informative, right?? But I am not getting this tab till tomorrow, at least that's what tracking says. So I don't know yet. When I check the build I will post back and let you know what they are shipping now with. Hopefully it is still rootable and eligible for unlocking the bootloader when that is released. That is very exciting!
I give you credit for reading my epic long post, and thank you for taking the time to address my concerns. I appreciate it! I'll check back in tomorrow afternoon. Mail comes late where I am.
Your link was the First thing I read on this forum!!!! Which is why I am sticking with what I am comfortable with. Also, in my case I only learn by doing. But I have always realized that hacking leads to problems sometimes. My motto is stay calm, and reach out for help. Panic doesn't solve anything. And if you are hacking your only phone that you rely on, be prepared to go buy a cheap prepaid phone to bail you out till you straighten out your expensive semi brick! lol. I've gone from holding my breath when hitting go, to just being curious on how to do stuff and finding out how things work. I guess I'm living life backwards!! I can afford it at this point in my life.
Just received my kindle HDx 7 from Amazon.
So, I placed this order 1 am Wed. morning- the sale must have been on PST. Took free shipping- non prime. Received on Friday around noon. Way ahead of the promised date.
The build received was 13.3.2.1. Sim chip was installed and connected to the internet, so I took it out as a precaution even though it is not yet asso. with an account. Skipped wifi set up till I get OTA updates halted. Now it's time to play!
I Really like the size of this tablet.
@Faznx92, now that I know I am on build 13.3.2.1 do you recommend I update manually to 13.3.2.4 or can I stay on this one?
Thanks for your advice and help. Rooted, OTA blocked and confirmed, superuser installed, binary updated. I will hold off on google stuff for now and see how this OS works.

I'm still on 13.3.1.0 and not moving any time soon.
13.3.2.1 is fine.
Stay on your version!
Also you will need to registered your device.

Thank you! I will hold where I am then. I guess since I bought it from amazon- an account I already had there- when I connected to wifi it sort of registered itself and associated it with my amazon account by Magic!!:silly:
I do have to say just using the native kindle OS, I am not a fan. I will be installing the HDxposed modules and google stuff. :fingers-crossed:
Yeap, magic brick lol Hopefully not for you though, you seem to have done a little homework. I would be thorough with your own research at least skim the threads of the modifications you wish to do just to see what problems other people have had may save you a lot of trouble. Good luck

Thanks jimyv Everything went as planned, couple hiccups that I solved by all the info posted here in this forum
The only thing I seem to have a problem with is sideloading apps now. It worked prior to downloading the google platform, but I can't seem to install from my sd card, app installers, or dropbox. I went back and checked that unknown sources is checked, and adb is turned on.
I had this same problem on my Note 8 on totally stock with just root applied and philz touch recovery. I fixed it by installing a stock hacked kitkat rom and that solved the problem.
Anyone have any ideas? Not too much of a problem since the play store/ market is up and running. I wanted to install samsung milk music that did install on my note 8 (not approved for that tablet). When sideloading was working for the hdx 7 I could load that apk, but it refused to install.
Now nothing will happen when I try to install any apk from dropbox or app installer. The buttons don't respond. If that's my only problem I can live with that!!

If you are trying to install into system it may be too crowded
Personally I use titanium back up and it shows the size of the ROM I only have like 34 MB left of room after installing gapps. And if you are using safestrap by chance you need to remake your slot delete the slot first then go to remake it it will show available space. I increase that cache by 200 MB then use the rest of my available space up in the data partition then create slot .

And if you are using safestrap by chance you need to remake your slot delete the slot first then go to remake it it will show available space. I increase that cache by 200 MB then use the rest of my available space up in the data partition then create slot .

No safestrap. I have a 32 GB. Is the internal partition for installing apps tiny on this tablet? I got the 32 gb so I wouldn't have this problem. Stock other than being rooted and having the HDxposed modules with google market installed. That might be taking up the room.
I have 1.1 GB of apps, system apps are close to 397 mb. I have 21 GB free.
************************************************************************
Must have been a space problem. I deleted AngryBirdsSpace and was able to install Adobe flash and Cerberus. Milk music still will not install, so don't think that is the issue with that one. It did install last week on my Note8 and my Mega so maybe because it's a samsung app??
Will Titanium BU work for moving apps to the sd card on this device? And free up space that way?
I can't seem to find the move to sd card on a long press with tit.BU, so I guess not.

[Q] Got a replacement Apollo

I just recieved a replacement Unit for my malfunktioning HDX 9.8. Current version on this thing is 14.3.0.2_user_302075320. I have just started it up to check the version and have not yet registered it or even connected it to a network. This time around I would like to be in control of things! What would be the appropriate thing to do with this version, if I want to :
1. Root it and keep it from auto-updating.
2. getting it safestrapped to be able to...
3. ...flash custom roms safely in the future,
Ive been looking around these forums to find out myself but information is scrambled and depending on version numbers and other things. The learning curve sure is steep here
/sebastian
My humble suggestion is to install TWRP (here) followed by the ROM of your choice. Each has pros/cons....stock is also an option. You will need to do some reading, plan carefully and be prepared for the unexpected. Keep that pup in 'airplane' mode to prevent debilitating OTA updates until you identify and apply an appropriate blocker. I think you will find the community quite willing to help with specific questions but you probably won't get a start-to-finish recipe. Lots of reading ahead but the rewards are worth it IMO. Good luck!
Thanks for the reply! Good to hear that airplane mode can be a temporary update blocker! I'll do some more reading up on TWRP to begin with then.

Be carefull and dont use airplane mode to block updates while in stock! At least one user reported that amazon can update your kindle even with airplane mode on! If you setup your wifi already, just turn-off / forget your wifi while in stock, or use OTA blocker ...
Forgetting all WiFi networks is good advise indeed! I have seen Kindle readers pop out of airplane mode on occasion; suppose the same could happen on Fire/HDX tablets although I have not personally experienced this. OTA blocker is great (what I use) but obviously requires root.
OK, thanks everyone!
I'm good so far! I first rooted with towelroot then went for the toolkit. Installed the ADB drivers, then SU, then OTA blocker. After that I Installed safestrap, made a backup and a new rom-slot, to which I restored the recovery. So now I should be OTA blocked and have a stock ROM recovery option. I hope I haven't made any terrible mistakes yet
I'm a happy camper! (as of yet
Now I will do som reading up on HDXposed and custom roms I guess. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is the Nexus rom a good option?
Thanks again!
Ok Iplayed around some and read up some more. Now I can definitely see the benefits of going for the custom recovery! I have a few remaining questions about the specifics about flashing TWRP that I cant seem to find the answer to. Hope somewone would be kind enough to help or point me in the right direction.
Do I need to uninstall safestrap before (or after) flashing TWRP?
Is "Copy image to SD-card root" the same as copying it to the device file system root? As in draging and dropping in windows perhaps?
What is the tool for issuing the commands mentioned in the TWRP install guide? (I have used ADB but only via the Toolkit aplication and I havent seen a command prompt for this around).
Sorry for lacking in some fundamentals on this... (being a noob on android stuff)
Never mind the above. All sorted. Up and running HDX Nexus 2.0.5. Great stuff!

Wanting to unlock bootloader and get cm12.1 or nexus quick ?'s

Hey guys ive got a hdx 7' RUNNING FIRE OS 3.2.4 everything i have been reading is saying that this version is somewhat unique in that there are a few roms availible mostly from safestrapp but most are not, twrp requires 3.2.3 and earlier as well as the bootloader unlock procedure. Can anyone point me in the direction on how to downgrade to one of the earlier versions. Currently i am rooted, ota disabled via: hdxtookit, i had safestrapp and a asop rom installed but was getting google play services stopped working error messages and restored to factory because i havent used the kindle in a year. Anyways i'm looking to get back into it and got cm 12.1 on my sgs3 and wanted to get something similar but keep runninginto problems with my version fire os. So just need a quick link to a roll back procedure in english and i should be able to do the rest from unlock - twrp - roms etc. I've been searching off and on the past few weeks but do not find anything definitive so i decided to finally ask to get an answer thanks for any and all help.

So basicaly for unlock BL and real TWRP you need have FW between x.3.1.0 and x.3.2.3:
Depending on your computer skills rollback can be achieved easy (or not).
Guide in english? Here, but you must mess with build.prop and on hdx especialy its really dangerous procedure - if you made simple mistake, it could be your last with that device and deadly for it for sure.
Sorry, I will not guide you through the process, if you feel you are lost, you can ask davey126 for help, but he answered this type of question soo many times . . . you can try read his posts before you ask him, there is high posibility he answered it somewhere...

@jeryll is spot on. There are a ton of helpful posts from a variety of authors that could get you started. This one comes to mind although there are many others. Lots of folks here are happy to answer targeted questions but you have to do your homework first. Read (and read some more), go slow, stop and post a question if unsure, don't take chances. Good luck.
Random thoughts:
- I strongly encourage upgrading to 13.3.2.5 or 13.3.2.6 prior to rolling back to 13.3.1.0. Lower risk and clears out 'crud' that could ruin your day.
- Use HDX toolkit to block/unblock OTA. Don't mess with any other technique; bad day follows.
- Once OTA is unblocked stay off WiFi. Period. Do transfer/installs via tether. Belt-and-suspenders types engage airplane mode and delete existing WiFi profiles too.
- Double check every action before executing. Stop and ask questions if unsure. Juggling babies is safer than taking a wrong turn (ok ... maybe that's a bit extreme).
- Many guides suggest bootloader unlocking before installing TWRP recovery. My comfort meter goes the opposite way. Your call. There are decent arguments for both approaches.

How can I upgrade to 3.2.5 or 6. I believe I blocked ota it's been so lo.g ago I searched.for.the files and didn't see them anywhere so I assume it's still active even after factory restoration. And it's possible to twrp without unlocked boot loader? I didn't know that. What are the pros and cons. I'm not a dev so I went need to play around with much just want to rid of fire os and use a cm or nexus. If I can do that safety id LOVE that but still willing to try the adk route. Thanks for the info guys.

Locate HDX toolkit in the Android Development thread and try to remove the OTA block that way. Keep WiFi off or you might receive an unwanted update.
Although not recommended twrp can be installed with a locked bootloader.
Travelling this week so can't get into more detail. Suggest you keep reading. Don't do stuff unless you are absolutely confident in your skills, knowledge, risks and expected outcome(s). Post questions. Many folks willing to help if you have done your homework. Sorry for brevity ...
Yes, be ESPECIALLY careful with build.prop. I learned this the hard way. They is nothing like Odin for Samsung that can save you.

Nice finding, I absolutely forgot that this existed, of course he can use that thread with rollback images to downgrade to x.3.1.0! Then he can install TWRP etc... (as I did in the past - proof below )

Nice find! I had seen that post (long ago) but the significance never set in for Safestrap v3 users with FireOS xx.3.2.4 in the stock slot. Even if not rocking SS it is probably easier (and definitely a lot safer) to install SS vs rolling up just to roll back or messing with build.prop.
The OTA block could still be a problem as the @ggow's procedure still involves Amazon's native update mechanism.
Edit: Disregard OTA comment as modified 3.2.4 goes on first and should restore OTA capability (more importantly the ability to detect and process FireOS bin files in the appropriate location).
I upgraded from 13.3.2.4 to 13.3.2.5 and edited build.prop, so now my version shows 13.3.0.9. I downloaded 13.3.1.0 rom from Amazon server. When updating I always received the following error message "Unable to complete update because the update file is not valid. Please try downloading the file again" (I tried downloading 13.3.1.0 at least 5 times, but none of the downloaded file works). I suspect that something goes wrong with the rom file on Amazon server.
Anybody can help direct me to a non-amazon site or upload your working file to somewhere I can download from?
Thank you very much.

AFAIK after upgrading to x.3.2.5(or 6) you cant use downgrading via editing build.prop anymore (thanks to Amazon), check this thread for more info.
IF you decide to take further actions PLEASE READ INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY, so far you are lucky you didnt brick your kindle.

Assuming you are on 13.3.2.4 (must be that version) you need Safestrap v3.75 b02 for Thor (here). See Safestrap OP for additional information on installing/configuring Safestrap. Or follow part 1-2 of this guide. You do not need to create secondary slots as you will be overwriting FireOS in the Stock ROM Slot. This obviously dangerous. If something goes wrong you could be left with an unbootable device. Make a backup of your current environment from Safestrap recovery before flashing the rollback file. Note rolling back to 3.1.0 is a two step process. Be sure you understand these instructions and have the correct files. Ask questions if unsure.
After you have successfully rolled back to 3.1.0 you should uninstall safestrap before flashing native twrp, bumping your bootloader to 3.2.3 and then unlocking. Alternatively, you can work on bootloader unlocking first while Safestrap is installed which will offer more robust recovery capabilities should something go wrong in subsequent steps.

You can grab stock images here. Be absolutely certain you snag the correct one for your device. Verify md5=c49c0363de4d8dfa5c87c1bdb88aa2ba with ES FIle Explorer (long click the file and select 'properties' from the 'more' menu). Note you will loose root and OTA blocking. Be sure to stay off wifi. Use HDX Toolkit (requires usb tether to Windows PC) to root 3.1.0 and reblock OTA if needed.

Removing FireOS 5.1.2 and replacing with stock Lollipop?

Hi there,
I've been cruising these forums for a while and have managed to root my device, get adb setup, and TWRP installed. An unfortunate bit seems to be that you cannot leave TWRP installed and actually boot the device. I managed to get stuck in a boot loop having not restored the 5.4.1 bootloaders. I turned the device off and rebooted into TWRP, flashed the 5.4.1 bootloaders, rebooted, and I'm golden. However, this doesn't really get me anywhere.
So my goal here is to just wipe all this FireOS crap and turn this tablet into a normal android tablet. I've seen plenty of posts about it but cannot seem to find any single post that would achieve this for my specific device and software version. So I'm coming here for help.
Mostly, what I have done so far has come from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/general/how-to-upgrade-to-lollipop-root-gapps-t3163950
Unfortunately, from what I can tell, this process does not remove FireOS and replace it with stock Lollipop, it just updates you to 5.1.2 (which I'm already at) and installs GAPPS. It does not really have a "pure" Android install and it somehow retains the FireOS as the primary OS.
Now, please correct me if I am wrong here with any of the above (this is not a hobby of mine) but since I've rooted a few devices before I figured I could handle it. It seemed like a bargain getting this Fire HD 7 used for like $64... if only I can get it onto stock Android. I'm basically trying to make it a Nexus 7.
Since I CAN get into TWRP, I figure I should just be able to flash a custom ROM right? I've just been having a really hard time finding a stock Lollipop ROM specifically for my device. From what I've heard, flashing the new ROM is the most error-prone part of this type of stuff and can totally brick the device if it were not meant for it. If that did happen, I would need to be able to boot the device back up, get an adb connection, run the scripts that flash the correct bootloaders (post #2, section 101, from the link above) so I can reboot into TWRP and fix it. Perhaps understandably so, I've been very hesitant to just go trying things willy-nilly that I don't fully understand.
Could anyone offer any assistance? Perhaps just point me in the right direction? I've probably read most of the threads you'll likely link, so a short bit of context to how something pertains to my specific device as well as the link could help me significantly. The guides that people write usually contain updates and are quite difficult to follow to the "T" and half the time I'm not even sure something I'm doing actually pertains to my device.
[EDIT] I found this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_c5hHSCO_o8) but it looks like he's doing that on a previous generation Fire so, again, I'm not sure it will work and don't want to try and then brick it.

You seem to have the gist of it, which is that what you want to do can't be done. There is only one ROM for this device--CM11, here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/orig-development/rom-cm-11-kindle-hd6-t3270138 --and it is not fully working. No one's ever posted here about successfully installing a ROM for a different device, only about bricks as a result of trying.
@xSentinel has been disabling all possible apps, while still keeping the device running. His goal may be the same as yours(?). He started a thread here, but has since got a lot more disabled: http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-hd/help/5-1-2-bloatware-safe-to-remove-apps-2014-t3355167. Might want to post there and see what he's up to.

Ah, that is unfortunate. At least you've helped me to understand that my goal cannot be fully realized. I probably should have done a bit more research before purchasing the Fire tablet. I'm really just looking to set up an in-car tablet to handle Torque guages, navigation, and music. Perhaps I should just return the Kindle and shell out the extra cash for a Nexus 7. I think I could probably get a refurbished one for a price similar to what I paid for the Fire. I'll poke around xSentinel's thread a bit and see what I'm up against first though. If it comes down to it, the headache of dealing with Amazon's locked down devices might just outweigh the extra money/hassle of a Nexus 7 and a return.

You also might check out the Fire forums. (I got a refurb for $30.) They have a few ROMs and are doing interesting things. Also, lots of activity over there.
Some people may strive to be "purists", but remaining pragmatic is a recipe for relatively happy life
Because the bootloaders are locked, there are very limited options on what to boot. There was some lucky bug in the earlier bootloaders that gifted us with the ability to boot an unsigned TWRP using 4.5.3 bootloaders. But boot.img always had to be signed, or it would not boot.
To create a custom OS, one needs to match the custom ROM to the existing boot.img from a given version of FireOS. Kind of pain in the @ss, don't you agree ?
Instead, however, one can just keep FireOS 5, and tweak it to behave like almost a pure Android. And it's not hard ! So why chase the unicorns when all you want is right in front of you !
I'm currently working on completing a CM11 port - as someone else mentioned it needs to use the stock boot.img though, so I have to heavily modify CM code in order to get it to work with full functionality. CM11 does run very well on the device though, and it's much snappier than Fire OS imo.
In theory this device could use something like safestrap to boot unsigned boot images, however I probably won't bother writing something like that until I have CM11 at 100% functionality (currently my build is at about 60% if I were to estimate).
I think the guy who posted the first CM11 port is now working on porting CM12, although it's a massive pain to test.

Just so you know it can be done, I am running Torque on a Fire HD 6 and still running thr Fire O.S. There is also a similar app to Torque Pro in the Amazon app store - search for OBD and it should see it (sorry I can't give the name, soft bricked the device and won't be near a computer for another 4 days) It is similar in capabilities to Torque Pro, and runs around the same price.
