Guidance to root - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I purchased an HDX 7 off of Amazon. Unfortunately, I was unaware that this device would update out of the box so I allowed it to as I was over eager to mess around with it.
I am having difficulty finding clarity on how to root. I am currently running OS 4.5.3.
Is there a simple step by step guide out there for this version. It is difficult narrow down information through these many threads. Please excuse my ignorance, I am just looking for some clarity.
Thanks! :good:

You can't root 4.5.3 directly but you can rollback to 3.2.8 and optionally upgrade to 4.5.2. Both are rootable. Staying at 3.2.8 offers flexibility to install Safestrap and run the Nexus rom if you don't care for Fire OS. Gapps can be installing on either with vary degrees of effort/success although it seems easier on 3.2.8. Nexus is a great option if you don't mind JB roots. Very stable with a near AOSP experience. Unfortunately, other roms (eg: CM11/CM12) are not an option at present as the bootloader can not be unlocked on 3.2.8/4.5.2.
Start here if you want to rollback. As always, do your research up front and proceed carefully as Kindles (HDX in particular) are easy to brick with limited recovery options. The last point can not be over emphasized! You won't find any step-by-step guides but folks are willing to help with specific questions if you have done your homework.

I had the same issue. I already downgraded to 13.3.2.8. Where would I go from here.

(Help) (Thor) After Being Out Of The Rooting Game For A While, I Need Serious Help Wi

Hey guys!
I haven't rooted or messed with any of my Android devices in a long while, so I'm a bit rusty.
After searching and skimming through countless threads, I still have no idea whether I qualify to unlock my bootloader nor how to actually go about this process.
I would DEEPLY appreciate any help given!

Hi - welcome to the HDX forums. The options available and difficulty implementing them are dependent on the version of fire OS currently installed on your HDX. Bounce back with that and someone will likely guide you to the appropriate thread(s).
Keep in mind Kindles are not like most Android devices. It's easy to create a nonrecoverable brick flashing the wrong stuff.
I am currently running 4.5.3.
I understand the risks, and I'm willing to do anything in order to unlock this amazing device.

Your options at 4.5.3 are constrained. At present there is no reliable method to unlock the bootloader or install an alternate recovery (eg: TWRP). If you have the 7" model (13/Thor) you can roll back to a previous version of Fire OS (13.3.2.8 based on Jelly Bean), upgrade to 4.5.2 then root, block OTA, install gaps, etc. Or you can stay at 13.3.2.8, install Safestrap and the excellent Nexus Rom (based on JB 4.2). You may see references to earlier Fire OS builds, TWRP, CM 11/12, etc. Unfortunately, those options are currently unavailable given you are starting at 4.5.3.
I don't believe rolling back to 3.2.8 is an option on newer 8.9" models (14/Apollo) and few reports suggest Amazon won't do it either (preferring to replace the device with a reconditioned model that may come with a lower firmware level that can be more easily exploited). That said, things are changing rapidly. Check back frequently!
If you have the the 7" model start here. READ, READ, READ before attempting anything! Ask questions along the way. Recovery is difficult/impossible if you make a mistake. Tools/techniques you may have used (eg: fastboot cable) simply don't work on the HDX. Good Luck!

Root for a new build?

Hello everyone. I've updated my Xperia tablet Z4 lte to the 28.0.А,8,240. So does it means that I've lost the ability to make the root?((((( because the instruction of only one method for rooting says that it fits only for 28.0.A.7.24 or 28.0.A.7.27 builds.
?
get your version numbers straight
look up Androplus kernel here (read the whole thread)

I know several methods, they all exchange the kernel on the boot partition and have a more or less tedious way to install SuperSU
Year, thank you for your answer. I see root is possible for our device, but I hesitate to do it as I don't know exactly which apps would stop working once and for all without drm keys and there are no good custom roms, even cyanogenmod. I wonder, this device was released ten months ago, and so little done.
It make me feel blue, as it kills the hope that something would change in the nearest feature((((((
If you need my help in testing new ways of root, some new roms, feel free to send a word to me, I would try to help as much as I can))))

for some people it is just "can haz video asap!?"
If you venture into uncharted territory you needs lots of technical background and some experience.
What works on one device may work with a little modification on another.
So you read a lot. xdadevelopers is a good starting point. There are books on the subject. Look for "reverse engineering" or "system security". Good Linux knowledge is very useful.
The tools you need are all free and come with more documentation than you want to read with your Linux distro.

need a real noob friendly guide for rooting and flashing

guys rn3 is an amazing device and it has got amazing developement going on which makes me wanna try the range of amazing custom roms available for this device
however there are so many damn complications like different methods of unlocking bootloaders, different twrps, boot patching files etc.
although there are some good guides available they are still not noob friendly in my opinion and the fact that there are so many threads made by people who brick there redmi note 3 is a proof of that
i am new to the rn3 developement forums and terms like fastboot rom developer rom edl are all confusing to me at this point developement has reached to a level that i believe it is really difficult for someone who is a noob to even try flashing cm
all i want is a really really noob friendly guide which covers in complete detail all the instructions related to these topics
1. bootloader unlock , which method to choose and why
2.twrp version best recommended for flashing both miui and custom roms
3.need for patching boot file and in which
cases
4.any other stuff you might think is necessary

Bootloader: Go with the official way. The tool can be used again and again as long as you got the permission. There are many cases of bootloop and bricked phones when using unofficial method. Just goto miui unlock page and login with you id, you will get unlock permission within a week.
Download miunlock tool and follow the onscreen instructions.
Twrp: use the official version or if you want f2fs (which is not that big of a deal) thestrixs twrp. I prefer the official one. Reasons: no idea. The cofface version is for those who want twrp to remain unchanged even when they are using miui rom. If you plan to port to cm or anyother rom no need for cofface. The alka version lets you backup every single partition and allow you restore them seperately. No need to use this as you can always use miflash to flasb miui rom again. The only backup you will ever need is efs which can be done with any version.
I prefer a partition dump instead of twrp backup. If you want to know how to create a fool proof backup of efs see my guide. Just search it under discussions and you will find it.
Boot image:
There is no need. The custom cooked boot image is only eequired if you use miui and want to keep stock recovery from replacing twrp. Again why do all this when you can flash twrp again.
Any other stuff:
You can check out guides for installing rom, xposed, i dont know.

I think i need to bypass SafetyNet but I don't know where to start.

Title pretty much. I never had to do this with other my devices, my two LG G2s or my other other G3, apparently now I do have to bypass SafetyNet for some of the applications I use, as nothing seems to be working. So my question is where do I start. I see a lot of threads about it but they aren't as user friendly as a lot of the threads and guides in the LG G forums (Thanks to great guides by @xdabbeb and @roirraW "edor" ehT) ((Honestly its one of the reasons I bought another LG G3 was because of the users here)). Basically I am on XDABBEB's VS985 - 3.1.1, rooted (from 10B TOT). However I need to bypass Google safety net for two apps. I see things about Magisk, Systemless Rooting, Systemless Xposed, suhide. I don't even know what most of that stuff means, let alone doing all the terminal command in adb and stuff. If anyone could point me in the right direction that would be great.
Hi! I know you weren't necessarily asking me (and you're welcome, glad I was able to help people), but just wanted to weigh in on only a couple of the aspects I have any knowledge about. First, any rooted (at least stock) ROM on the G3 since Lollipop 5.x is using systemless root - I believe it's the only way root can be implemented on 5.0 and above. However, systemless root by itself doesn't necessarily get you to pass SafetyNet. I am not knowledgable at all about SafetyNet because I have no need for passing it, so I really can't weigh in on it or Magisk, and I haven't used Systemless Xposed.
Systemless anything (root, Xposed, I think there are other systemless mods) means that the system partition, where what really makes Android be Android resides, is not modified. This may be a simplified explanation but there are others who know a lot more about this stuff.
I don't even know if it's possible to implement Magisk or hope for passing SafetyNet on a rooted G3. If you haven't poked around or asked in the non-Verizon G3 sections, you might want to see if anyone's mentioned anything, although of course it might only loosely apply to the Verizon variant.
You probably couldn't run a customized stock ROM like @xdabbeb's VS985 v3.1.1 at all if you hope to pass SafetyNet, but again, this is coming from my limited knowledge. The system partition on any custom ROM is usually fairly heavily modified to varying degrees.
Good luck!

Thanks as always. You did help me explain things better at least. That isn't really the news I wanted to hear but I'll peek around and see what I can find. I saw something on reddit about bumping Magisk on a G2 and G3 if you're running CM (is that Cyanogen or Clockwork, see the lack of hand holdi-ness I can't even comprehend the acronyms). But the whole thread was garbled noise to my beginners ears.

You're welcome. CM is CyanogenMod. CWM is the acronym for ClockWork Mod. CM isn't made any more (simple version of explanation); for all intents and purposes it's now LineageOS. No real difference to the end user, just name change.

Well thanks, guess I'll start looking into all of that then. Hope i can get something working

Question Looking for a little general direction

I picked up one of these bad boys on a pretty deep discount to use as a dedicated retro gaming device. I’m interesting in tinkering a bit and am wondering if anyone has any thoughts or suggestions on a good rom choice for my use case ? I’ve already gotten my unlock code and I’m pretty much ready to go at this point !
Most people say CorvusOS and EvolutionX are good gaming ROMs, they both seem to be fast. Some people talk about some sort of ROG gaming rom, though ive never heard of it, or tried it.
But, uhm... upon looking at this devices page.. there aren't ANY custom roms available for your device.
Wow really? That's unfortunate.
Is there any point to Unlocking and installing TWRP / Rooting my device then?

I fiundbthat this is a device good for being your experimental toy-around gadget for tweaks and other such root related changes fun to play around with what you can do but from what I know so uncommonly rooted or used by devs that have any influence on the releases of these roms to really give you the full experience of having a rooted device.

You can root it for kernel optimisations and debloating, while also giving you more customisation control over your device.
TWRP is available, so rooting should be possible with magisk.
