[Q] Venue 7 3740 - Possible to flash GApps? - Dell Venue

Hi everybody.
I successfully rooted the Venue 7 3740 using the temp CWM session but recently have many force closes of google apps, especially Play Music, Google Search (voice search) and YouTube. The issues started after updating the apps from Play Store, uninstalling the updates makes them function again but I obviously would like updated apps.
So I wonder if I can use the temp CWM session to flash current GApps (for example my favorite PA GApps) -which might lead to working updated apps- without breaking something (because of the builtin GApps from stock).
Maybe anybody has some experience and enlighten me
Greetings,
slaecker

Do a backup and test it out for us. If anything I'd say wipe data from the gapps you've updated. But do a backup first still! Tinker! I always recommend backup to sd card from prior headaches of not. Explore! This isn't a big a crowd as it looks, or is it?

I have no problem testing myself, I just thought checking some feedback before and maybe benefit from other users experience. I hope the nandroid restore works well from the tethered CWM in case something goes wrong.

Test it out first. remove a non essential system app and see if the restore restores it for you. Something not used like a google magazines or amazon Mp3 app.

I meant restoring the complete nandroid backup in case something goes completely wrong. Hope this works if needed.

Facebook v1.7.1 force-closing when trying to post status update

Hey guys,
I'm trying to figure out if these force-closes are due to my ROM, or because the new app is buggy. I tried Deck's 1.0 and now I'm on CleanROM 2.5. When you are in the new Facebook app, and you go to News Feed, there are three icons at the top of the screen. One for Photo, another for Status, and finally one for Check In. Every time I click Status, it instantly force-closes. I have reinstalled the app several times, and the error persists across different ROMs.
I am not ruling out that some other app could be conflicting, or even a system setting--that's why I'm asking if any of you are seeing the same problem.
I even get a force-close if I am on the Main Menu for the new Facebook app, and I click on the text bubble at the top that represents a new status update. All that button appears to do is open the News Feed and hit the Status button, (it goes through both steps, then crashes again.)
I would probably be a much more productive person if this app were to never work again though
Try to fix permissions thru your recovery or rom manager. Or just move to google+

How would permissions cause the app to crash? It's not asking for root, so I guess I don't understand all that.

If you restored any kind of data for that app previously, you probably have some conflicting issues in a data folder for facebook. Hence the force closing. Two separate data issues trying to tell each other what to provide when you click on a certain part.
Edit: Actually, you wouldn't even have to restore anything to have conflict. That data info would still be there.

If I install a ROM and don't restore FB using TB, I shoudn't have any old files, right? I use superwipe, then do a wipe cache/dalvik/factory reset from within recovery.. then flash the new ROM. Some day to wipe the caches again, then flash the same ROM again... I tried this and it did no good. I don't see why that would do anything anyways.

When you guys say permissions, are you talking about filesystem permissions on that specific file? If the file has the wrong permissions, how would it work at all?

Those files are saved on your sd card. So when you wipe everything, that is wiping everything on your phones memory. It doesn't touch the data and files saved on your sd. That is where it is read from.

Thanks! I also ended up fixing the issue... I was also having problems with sending Gmail messages... they would say 'sending' indefinitely, and never actually get pushed out.
I went into Applications and cleared the data for both apps, and reconfigured them from scratch, and everything works great now... this is very bizarre...
I don't move apps to SD, and I didn't use TB to restore... that's definitely going to be my first action from now on when an application acts up though.
The app never posts statuses for me at all. Stopped using it for now.

[Q] About future updates of SK17i considering the current issue

I am about to root mini pro using the instructions provided by Doomlord in development section. But there is an issue with mini/mini pro that if you unlock the boot loader and try to update software using Sony's update service it bricks the phone.
So what I'd like to know is when the upcoming patch comes out (and the following ones) will I be able to install those in any way (other than sony's service) without having to completely flash the device with the new updated ROM (which, i'm assuming, wipes the data on the phone)?
Thanks!
(Couldnt post in Development section since I'm under 10 posts)
Can someone do me a favor and post this question in the relevant thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1227149
Thanks a bunch
Soo ... Tell me... Why do you want root

Not to sound ingrateful or rude but I've read quite a few threads already, and this is a new phone with a specific problem.
Basically, I'd just like to know if it's possible to apply updates in a non-official way without losing erasing phone's data.
---------- Post added at 05:05 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:02 PM ----------
Main reason is to be able to use wifi at home. I have to establish a connection via pppoe dialer on my PC and I need to do the same on the phone to use internet. Such apps require root.
Backups and some other things would be nice too.
one way would be to relock your phone and do an SEUS update (i will try this if there is a new update soon!).
Other way would be to make a backup with titanium backup, flash the new file (I bet there is going to be a new firmware file in the forum after the update showed up!) and then restore it from the backup.
This worked for me when I switched my phone 3 weeks ago!
Thanks Linkin, I didn't know you can restore from a backup to a different version of ROM. It's my first android device.
Relocking the boot loader is a great solution as well.
Again, thanks a lot. Cheers!
you're welcome.
well i don't recommend restoring system apps from a different ROM, but I've never failed to restore user apps (+ data) and thats the most time expensive part. The few system settings you have to redo can most likely be done in a few minutes, right?
Well I also didn't know that the restore process is selective like that =)
And I agree, system settings are a non-issue, it's all about user apps and data.
Cheers
I always do "batch"-backups (in Titanium Backup) and select "user app + system app" (you know, just in case...).
But on restore, i select "batch" and now you can select ANY app you want to restore, including system apps. But i only handpick the apps i really need to restore and then I'm ready to go.
This is also a way to check if you're really using an apps... this way I only use about 200 MB of my internal storage (I have 220 MB free).

[Q] how to root a stock 2.2 vibrant without odin

Is there a way I can root a stock 2.2 vibrant without losing all the apps and data? My wife wants me to rom her phone but she does not want to lose any apps. I plan on using Titaium Backup but the phone has to be rooted first. Im stuck and not sure which way to go or is it a lost battle and I wont be able to root it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Use SuperOneClick to root your phone. It will not delete anything, but it will install the Superuser app.
I used this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028
and it worked just fine for me. Didn't odin at all and once you log into your market account all your apps are there anyways. TBpro is money well spent, as far as I am concerned.

she dont want to lose her data from her apps or otherwise I could just do it and be done with it.
rom manager pro

rooting does nothing to take away apps or data..
when you put the custom rom on, then things change... what "data" is she so concerned about?

she does not want to lose anything and have to start all over. I was able to finally get her phone to root tonight. I used titanium backup to backup all her apps and data now I need to put a rom on her phone. When I do this, I can use titanium to put everything back. Where exactly does titanium back everything up to?

Clone a Tablet??

Hello all.
I recently purchased 4 gTablets as they were on sale a couple weeks ago.
I bought 2 for my daughters (Their birthdays are coming up), and while I was at it I got one for me and one for my wife as well.
The stock ROM was crap, as expected, so I used the instructions in the post for ICS 1.3. I flashed CWM successfully and then NVRAM'd it then put the new ICS 1.3 on it. It works Great!!!
I then spent the last 2 days installing my them, icons, widgets, apps and I think I have it working very well with a nice interface and good apps.
I have made a backup of it in CWM so I can restore back to this point if needed.
My question is, Can I clone my backup to the other 3 gTabs that I bought so I don't need to go through all that work of getting it all set up again?
If so, What steps do I need to take on the other gTabs?
Just install CWM, copy the backup to the internal SD Card and then update?
Will that work or do I need to copy other files ystems to them as well?
If I could just clone the other 3e, it would save me so much time.
Thanks!
Also, is there a way to get the camera and microphone working with ICS?
no cam/ mic on ICS.
to "clone" install CWM recovery on all tablets then copy the backup folder from /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup to the same location. then go to the recovery on each tablet and restore the file that was made when you backed up your first tablet.

Thanks..I'll give it a try..
Just one question...
My tablet has my gmail account information already in it...for mail, market etc...
Once I clone them...How do I change the account information on the other 3 tablets to unique gmail accounts?
Thanks again!

You'll have to enlarge the system partition on the other tablets (using the Team DRH nvflash package), then do the CWM restore as the poster above said.

You can
a) either add a new account (Settings > Accounts & sync > ...) and delete the old one, or
b) create a new one and make that the primary one in things like Market.
Handy tip for this scenario. I use my Google account for all purchases and set it up as a secondary account on the rest of the family's devices. Makes buying an app for the daughters to use much easier and means I never have to allow them the ability to spend money via Android. ;-)
Another help full tip. Before making a backup Wipe Cache and also Dalvic Cache. That way your nandroid backup will only have the data and system to transfer to the other tablets.

The only way to delete the old original account is to wipe data factory reset on the 2nd and 3rd devices, which defeats the purpose of having the same setup on other devices. I think they would be better off doing option b

This is simply incorrect. You can trivially delete the account using Settings > ... as I said. ICS will even ask you if you want to create a backup account right afterwards.

[Q] KitKat 4.4.2 Sd card fix

Hi, I'm new. I hope you could help me.
First things first. 'Sony xperia tablet Z wifi 16gb' is my first tablet and android device.
SGP3111
Android 4.4.2
Kernel 3.40-perf-g32ce454
Build 10.5.A.0.230
I upgraded it to 4.4.2 and I'm really disappointed about the restriction to write on the external sd card. I read about the new changes on the android official site, but there was nothing about sd card write permission changes. I didn't see it coming.
Is there a way to fix this problem without rooting the device? I never done something like that, I don't want to loose my warranty and it seems that there are many thing to consider.
I read that if backup my TA partition, I can eventually restore it later and keep my warranty, but I also read that I need root permission to do such thing and my bootloader must be locked. And some root procedure requires the bootloader to be unlocked.
If I root my device I won't be able to update it with official update, I'll have to do it manually.
If I change ROM, MHL won't work anymore.
Is that all right? I'm confused :\
I also don't want to loose my purchased app, my settings and my savegames.. I really spend a lot of time on this tablet. A simple backup will resolve all of that?
Is there a way to fix everything?
Thank you for your patience and your time.
Hi, you must root to bypass sd restricitions sorry
I'm also new to Android, the Z is also my first tablet and I did the same thing you did. I could not use my SD-card anymore. So I read a lot in the internet. The only thing you can do is to root your device. I did it yesterday and now I am happy again. If there is something broken on your device you still can remove root before sending it back.
I did a Titanium Backup before. But I think this only works if you are rooted. Is this the truth? I had a great restore, everything looks like before. But there should be some data backed up to Google if you have activated this point.
You will not loose your purchased apps. Google Playstore knows which apps you have purchased in the past and you are able to load them "for free".

FYI, this is the instruction which worked fine for me:

nice post, but I have some questions.
Did you make a TA partition backup? I read that this thing is what make your warranty still intact.
Titanium backup needs root permission, so I cannot do that. Did you use titanium app or sony pc companion backup?
Did you also restore app settings and game savegames?
Are you using 4.4.2 official kitkat with root or some other ROM? I read that MHL wont work anymore on that.
Thank you.
No I did'nt have a TA-Backup. Right after I got my tablet I rooted it with Android 4.3 before I read something about TA-Backup. But I think it's a good idea to do so. Here is a nice link: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/easily-backup-the-ta-partition-on-your-sony-xperia-device/
So now you know, I started with a rooted device. (My thought was to root it right after I got it, to don't loose data when I try to root it a few month later. When there was Android 4.4 I thought I will try without root. That was a very bad idea. I had so much problems with restrictions from Android. A lot of Apps were not running anymore which even did not need root with Android 4.3.) So I used Titanium Backup as backup solution and had a backup from my 4.3 rooted installation. Titanium Backup is really great. It recovered every App setting (savegames, settings) and also system settings like Wifi keys, app symbols at the screen and so on. I only had to download some big game files at the first start automatically (settings and savegames were still recovered).Titanium Backup saves the backup on your SD-card.
For your info, if you use my linked instruction, the SD-card will not be formated. But a backup is recommended.
I used the Kitkat ROM from the link, I think this is the official one.
I think google does a backup of some of your Apps settings when you are connected with your google account. Am I right? But I'm not sure which data is backed up. Can anybody else answere this question? But I think there will be a way to backup most of your data without root.
