[Q] Installing stock firmware - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
my first post on XDA, so let's pray i'm doing this the right way.
I have a bit of a situation on my hands. I bought a GS3, which was defective. The power button became to sensitive. So the tip was: Unscrew your device en take out the power button. So i did. No big deal i thought because i have root access, i have a touch recovery and an app for turning off the screen and rebooting and stuff.
Recently i bought the smartdock. So i could use a keyboard, mouse and a screen with my GS3. But because i was running CM11 it didnt support the HDMI out to the screen. Then i thought: big deal, ill flash the stock ROM with ODIN.
That's where things went south. The phone got stuck in a bootloop. There is no getting to recovery because i dismissed my power button. I do have a jig for download mode. But every stock ROM i flash ends up in a bootloop. I tried ADB but my phone doesnt give premission.
Is there something i can do? Somehow get to recovery? Somehow wipe my cache and dalvik? Flash something different than stock with ODIN? Can i replace the motherboard to solve the problem?
Thanks guys!

@TryItOut1: name is program? So, I have something for you:
- Flash a 3part PIT with Odin. It contains the missing reset. Your phone should boot afterwards.
- Root it with CF-Autoroot, with Odin.
- Flash TWRP-recovery with Odin. It needs no hardware buttons.
I hope you succeed.

Thanks for the great advice!

Can i ask you to elaborate? I never worked with pit files. I know TWRP recovery and I know the autoroot. But i don't know what a 3part pit is. I know odin has a "pit" slot. But what do i feed to it?
Name is program? Did i use a programmers name? That was not my intention.
Ik zag trouwens dat je uit Maastricht kwam. Het is misschien makkelijker praten in eigen taal.

I'm sorry but i don't seem to understand.
Here's what i don't get. When i use the english explanation and i open 4.3 there are 5 downloadlinks.
In the how to flash picture there are only 3 files that are being flashed. The PDA, the phone and the CSC.
In the German explanation there are 4 files being flashed. This time including the PIT. And the PIT isnt even named in the 5 downloads.
My question is. What do i download and what do i use? And do you have to check the repartition box? Because sometimes it's checked and sometimes it isn't

@TryItOut1:
1. The xda-rescue: Afaik you've to take the pit-file from a 4.1-archive. It contains the partition-data.
2. The bitstopfen-link contains downloads and manual. You've to follow it.
Yes, repartition must be checked.
But: if you get bootable firmware by this, how do you start then into download-mode for the following steps?

Still not there

I must be some sort of idiot. When i look under the 4.1 theres nothing there.
When i look in the German description i can't find the right things either. Just standard firmware and modem. And my german is not that good so i don't really understand it.
Do i just need a pit-file and the standard dutch firmware? Then where can i find the right pit file?
I use a usb jig for downloadmode.
I'm sorry but im completly lost here.

The Gernan version is easy. I sent you a PM in pretty Dutch…
Done.

installed cwm instead of rooting first onto a clean sgs2 ..i need help please?

hi
SHORT VERSION
installed cwm via odin onto sgs2 then cf root after.
phone goes into recovery and cwn but wont boot. (boots to logo then goes off)
i have original stock rom and .dll files
scared to flash through odin using .pit with .dll
LONG VERSION
ok let me slap my self round my own head.
i should of known better as i have rooted and installed cwn
so many times before but on this occasion i blame tiredness and
people yapping in my ears.
what i have did was to installed cwm onto a new 4.0.3 sgs2 phone via odin (pda then start)
then after noting my mistake i tried to boot the phone. it boot to logo screen then switch off.
i decided to cf root it with odin (again only pda and start) but again the phone boots to logo and triangle
then goes off.
maybe im in good luck the phone goes into recovery mode and cwn but wont boot.
i have the stock rom files that i downloaded
1, I9100XXLPQ_I9100OXALPQ_I9100XXLPQ_HOME.tar.md5
2. SS_DL.dll
with the above files i thought i could use the .PDA and ss_dl.dll for the .PIT in odin but im not 100%
sure since i do know that IT usage in odin will mess up the phone.
please can some one help me out thanks

Do not use the .pit file unless you understand 100% what you're doing, as its one of the easiest ways to brick your device.
I have a few questions before I can help you.
Can you get into download mode?
- If you can go to www.sammobile.com, download a stock firmware, flash through odin. If it still doesnt boot, try to wipe data/factory reset through 3e (stock recovery), then try to boot again.
-- After you do that, flash a cf-kernel to root the device.
does odin support .md5 file i have in the pda ..... man im really getting gittery
thanks

Yes, you can flash .md5 files in Odin.
That file is a single package and should contain everything you need. Flash via Odin in the PDA section. Don't touch anything else.
Also. You are SURE you have an i9100, right?

Problematic Bootloop, recovery screwed , .PIT required?

Hey,
I have somehow managed to brick my phone, here's how it happened..
I was using it, it was quite alright.. But then suddenly, the power button menu started appearing for no reason.. Then i couldnt use the power button at all.. But it got automatically resolved in the evening.
I found my camera to be very unsatisfying, so i updated the camera fw, and it was successful. No issues in the phone as such.
The next day, i found the phone stuck in a hard bootloop, unsolvable by taking the battery out and all.. The recovery mode resets into boot after like 3 seconds.
I put the phone in download and flashed a single file official rom from intratech's thread , that didnt solve anything.
So i thought that i had no option but to flash a .pit file and repartition the phone.
Now, i have an indian gt-i9100, and i looked everywhere for a .pit file , but i cant find a comprehensive guide which includes the .pit file.
I found this- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457458&page=1
It has all the files, modem, code, and csc. Even the bootloader. But after downloading the package, i couldnt find a .pit file.
So i carried on with the multi file flash, voila, no recovery for me now. The phone still goes into download mode though.
I can carry on with the bootloader flash, but i wanted to try and clear and partitioning problems there might be, if any.
Please help.
Details of recent multi flash- XXLPH with the modem and csc files.
EDIT--
Just got the .pit file from the post mentioned above.. did the repartioning.. still the same problem ..

You simply need to flash a stock firmware that will wipe your phone.
If you don't know where to find it, let me know

No. You read my post wrong.
I said, you need to flash a special stock firmware that will wipe everything, including data on your phone. Stock firmwares naturally don't wipe data etc after flashing.

I tried flashing XXLPQ from intratech's thread.. Single file flash.. Still not working. It brought back recovery though, But it resets into boot again. Like after 3 seconds.
I m out of my wits here.. What the hell should i do to get this phone to work?
Is it hardbricked? Is it time for me to pay for the repairs at the nearest service center?

ok here try this
pit : http://www.mediafire.com/?pu1nh622wudgzey
Firmware: http://hotfile.com/dl/146748985/809318f/I9100XXLPH.zip.html
Kernel : http://www.mediafire.com/?65a5a59666hdopx
PASSWORD FOR EXCTRATING KERNEL : [email protected]
First flash pit .. once done remove usb , remove battery again get the phone in download mode
flash only kernel in pda once done remove usb , remove battery again get the phone in download mode
after that then flash pit and the firmware together
in firmware u will find 3 files
CODE -> PDA
MODEM -> PHONE
CSC -> CSC
I think you should choose flashing the stock firmwares, where you should wipe everything: caches, dalvik cache, factory reset; however, backup your files.
Flash the firmwares that'd give you that "fresh new feeling"
If flashing it once won't work, i think you could try flashing it again.
But i think you screwed up somewhere in the steps.. mmmm you could try using simple fw's.. ones where all the files are in one PDA file

[Q] When should U go for a PIT file?

Just as the Subject says. Only for knowledge purposes (though my phone is bricked :/ )
I get absolutely NO ERRORS while flashing ANY firmware for that matter through Odin. Though my phone is U.K Unbranded I9300XXBLG8.
It should boot-up but doesn't :/
Can't get into Recovery either. Not even a glimpse of it.
Stuck at the i9300 logo :/
Anyone care to help me and answer the following questions?
1. When is flashing a PIT File suitable? At what error u should do it?
2. Do I have a Bootloader/Recovery Problem or something?
3. Will J-Tagging help it?
4. Can someone tell me what is causing this problem? I haven't seen anyone with this problem yet. The firmware as well as CF Root flashes successfully (in Odin)... though the phone shows no positive results.
5. Should I go for PIT or J-Tagging or something else? I don't wanna risk it. All I know is that u should only flash a PIT file when u get the "Get PIT for Mapping" error. And J-Tagging is when the phone doesn't boots up. (I may be wrong)
Anyone with some suitable knowledge please drop by and help me.
Or someone who had this problem before.
My phone is a GT-i9300
CSC Version: I9300OXABLG8
Last Firmware was XXBLG8.
Pebble Blue non-branded and 16gb version.
THANK U
don't panic!
You should be able to fix it by just flashing a stock firmware with Odin
---------- Post added at 04:27 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:25 PM ----------
you could also try removing the battery for a few minutes and then reinsert and try voting recovery again
Only go for a pit file, if you're planning to flash-lock the device, or repartition it, for that matter.
Don't panic, if your device is bricked, it's not, actually
You f***ed up your boot partition..
Goto sammobile.com/firmware, register, download latest U.K. firmware and then you should be good to go. Then you can root it and everything. DW about your SD, it'll stay as it is..
Hope I could help!

Flashing a pit is risky, and interruption could lead to hard brick, however if you do it right then all will be good, I used to flash with pit on the s1 regularly as it was a necessity coming from cm to gb, or something along those lines.
Just make sure you know what you are doing

OK i think my phone is alive. I managed to get it into the CWM Recovery. But there seems to be one little problem. That I can't mount my SDCard. Even tried mounting in the "Mounts and Storage" Option. Im kinda hopeful but I don't know what to do now
Tried Factory/Data Resetting but that didn't do any good. Have i Effed my SDCard or something??? :/ :/

any specific error messages about that in cwm?
Personally i used .pit with no issues. My story was that i changed the original partition layout and flashed stock .tar after that. CWM was functional but couldn't mount anything. So i just grabbed a .pit and flashed stock together with .pit - all fine.
And regarding the "interruptions" during .pit flashing - it was the same speed as flashing without .pit, at least for me.
If in your case it's simple filesystem corruption, connecting over adb and launching fsck on the messed up partitions should provide some results.

Are you able to get into recovery mode still? For download mode make sure your holding down the correct key combination to get into download mode. You can also try using a USB Download jig which you can get from here, which when plugged into the phone will force the phone into download mode. As a fair warning the download jig's don't usually work with newer model phones but for a couple bucks it's worth a try. Let me know if you still have questions.
Motherboard dead?
Sorry to invade this post. I would just like to have confirmation on my device and it's pretty similar to what is found here. The only way I can access download mode is by pressing Q+Power and then adding the battery. Odin connects to everything, I can even flash the firmware from Bell for my Galaxy gt-i5510M and it PASS. But I can't still power it up, is the motherboard or something similar dead?
Thanks

If your device can still access download mode and Odin can successfully connect to your device an flash the firmware your device's motherboard is not dead. Try re-flashing the firmware to your device and checking auto-reboot option in Odin this way when the firmware finishes flashing the device will automatically reboot and hopefully power on then.
Thanks for the fast answer, you've been answering 3 people back on this thread, impressive.
Unfortunately I made sure of that, the auto reboot was checked but it doesn't reboot the device. I wanted to put a screenshot but I didn't realize you need around 10 posts to be able to post outside links. I've been looking through xda for a while but never posting.
I'm used to adb, so Odin is a bit new I have to admit. I've put the ops file, callisto in this case, in the appropriate ops , and then the One Package file I got from samfirmware "I5510UGKC5_I5510BMCKC5_BMC". Is there something else I could flash? It wouldn't be like some other phones where I could put down a Custom Recovery, go back to stock, etc. ?

To clarify did you put the firmware in the correct slot in Odin (PDA slot in this case) when flashing? Also double check your flashing the correct firmware for your device, as that could also be part of the problem.
Well you figured some things that were wrong. I was putting it in the one package slot. So I tried in the PDA slot, but it said "Invalid Image Type". From the sticker inside the battery compartment, it does say it's the GT-I5510M, so the 551 from Bell Canada it seems. But it's not easy to find a firmware for it, and the only one I found is at sammobile. There's plenty others under GT-I5510, but they're all European.
Any idea what I could use instead? The full name of the firmware I have is: "I5510UGKC5_BMCKC5_HOMEDOWNLOAD_TEST.tar" or "I5510UGKC5_I5510BMCKC5_BMC.zip" for the zip.
Thanks a lot for following this.

You can try ignoring the "Invalid Image Type" error and trying to flash anyway just don't unplug your phone from Odin until it fully completes the process.

I did, but didn't work, I should have mentioned that. So the screen is still blank. But another driver got recognized and installed once the firmware was installed, Samsung com 3 if I remember well. I was hoping when I saw that!

With the new COM port being recognized try the procedure again and see if it has any different results.
sorry to interrupt you people.. but are you sure that it is a proper firmware file. because the pda file is .tar file. also, try entering the recovery mode and flashing a cwm recovery. then check if the system is mounted.
Sorry I've been away, meaning no phone and laptop with me. Thanks for the replies. I tried to flash again the firmware last week but nothing happened unfortunately.

I can't access recovery mode, only download mode by simultaneously putting the battery back in and pushing Q+Power. But I am wondering also if it could be a wrong firmware... Can I just flash a custom rom through Odin? Would that make up for it? Anything to having back in working order.

NAND Write Start stalls

First I read all the stickies and tried every installation to go back to stock but Odin just freezes up. Also tried different USB ports and and computers and same results. I can only go into download mode.
You may need to repartition. Not knowing the history of how your phone got to where it is now, I can't be sure. Can you give me a complete rundown of your issue?

How would I go about repartitioning the phone? I full wipe and flashed the new Shostock3 and it was doing fine. The next day when I woke up my phone had the sleep of death. The Galaxy S2 logo was stuck and I tried to get into recovery and it only showed half of the screen and was frozen. Now the screen says Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again.
Go to the Download Repository. The link is in my sig.
First, try flashing full stock Gingerbread. Use the download under the heading I777UCKH7-CL503881 Stock Binaries. This is the full distribution which contains the bootloaders. It doesn't matter whether you use the one-click downloader, or the tar.md5 file with Odin stand alone. If this flash completes, then you're recovered. Follow the guides to root and install a custom Gingerbread kernel, then flash back to SHOstock3 or whatever firmware you want.
If this flash does not complete, then download the I777 UCKH7 PIT and use that in Odin stand alone with the above tar.md5 file. Insert the tar in the PDA slot, the pit in the PIT slot, and check repartition, then flash.

So I tried both the one-click downloader and flash doesn't not complete, same goes for odin and PIT file.

If you didn't try it already, now go back and flash just the tar.md5 file without the pit, again, and see if it will complete.

Yes, I was hoping that the problem is not hardware, but it was a thought from the beginning, given the sequence of failure. Is the phone by chance still under warranty?
Let's don't give up yet, though.
Things to try, then try to flash the full firmware in between.
1. Use Odin stand alone to flash just the I777 secondary bootloader.
2. Use Odin stand alone to flash just the param.lfs.
Try the instructions in this post.

No it isn't anymore. My upgrade isn't until May. Do you think a usb jig will work?
Thanks I will try that and will let you know how it comes along.

You can already get into download mode. I don't believe there is any difference in the download mode produced by a jig. A jig is really helpful if the wrong secondary bootloader was flashed by accident (or ignorance), and you can't get the phone into download mode any ohter way.

Tried those these you mentioned and still stuck. I'm already losing hope and want to get a new phone or spare already. I think I have a few things saved in the phone too.
Update: My screen is stuck at the Samsung Galaxy S2 screen with the yellow triangle.
Same problem

Same issue here, The phone's stuck on Nand flash in Odin. Had tried all recommendations suggested here... Any updates on the phone sent to mobiletech guys?
