[Q] TF Prime boots into Android, but not into recovery - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hi everyone,
I purchased a used Asus Transformer Prime from someone locally. They already installed CynaogenMod on it, and it booted and appeared to work fine (albeit more slowly than what I expected/was used to, but that could be for several reasons). My initial intent upon purchase was to use it to dual-boot with Ubuntu or another Linux distro, but I haven't been successful in fulfilling that desire yet. Here's what I've done:
I tried to copy a folder into the "root" of the tablet, but it doesn't seem to take. So, I thought that maybe I needed to resize the partition (perhaps it was too small). To do this, I downloaded and ran Clockwork Mod ROM Manager premium and tried to flash the bootloader, but that doesn't seem to work- when I now try to boot into recovery by holding down the power and down vol. buttons, I get the four choices as I usually do - RDK, Android, USB, Wipe Data- but upon pressing RDK, the system just says it is booting the recovery image and hangs. I've also tried TWRP Manager, and it crashes. The system boots into Android just fine. The only other thing I noticed is that it doesn't seem to like my SD card - when I try to access the storage option in Android upon inserting it, storage crashes. Sometimes it will say I have inserted a blank SD card but it won't let me do anything with it.
Settings says my Kernel version is 3.1.10-g0cef264-dirty, [email protected] #2, Sun Nov3 20:11:09 EST 2013
CynanogenMod version 10.2-2031103-UNOFFICIAL -tf201, build number cm_201-userdebug 4.3.1 JLS36l 2e7bb9b83c test-keys
Android version 4.3.1
I downloaded and installed Flashify in hopes that it would work, but still no dice. I have tried a few other steps, suggested to me by a helpful fellow on the Flashify Google + community page , but haven't made progress.
What I'd ideally LIKE to happen is that I can get a dual boot for both Ubuntu and Android. I'm willing to do whatever I need to so this will happen, including wiping the tablet and starting from the ground up. However, I'm pretty new to Android modification (though I know my way around Android OS) and may need a bit of explanation on how to do certain things.
Any ideas?

[Q] Razr Doesn't Recognize Internal Storage Running Liquid Smooth

Obviously, I'm new to this site, as I imagine most are when they have their first big issue.
Right off the bat, I want to admit that this is solely my fault, and I have been trying to fix it for the past day... To make matters worse, the phone was a gift from my wife for our anniversary, so, I feel pretty bad about it...
The situation:
I rooted my phone yesterday with RazrBlade. I had to do a factory reset to get it to stick, but that was fine. I then installed Boot Menu Manager. I set up the necessary partitions, system_3 system.img (300mb), cache.img (300mb), and data.img (2Gb). I realize I probably should have given system more room... but I didn't think that was app related. I then flashed Liquid-JB-v2.8-OFFICIAL-spyder and gapps-jb-20130301-signed from goo.im. It didn't tell me the system partition was out of memory, so I assumed (like a fool) that everything was OK...
After a few reboots to the wrong system, namely the stock system, I decided to go into BMM and change the default to system_3, and then I did the dumbest thing possible: I thought to myself, "Wow, it would be a pain to see this bootloader each time my phone reboots. I'll turn the delay to 0!" So... I did...
The Problem:
My phone now boots straight past the recovery to system_3, which seems to have no space allocated for applications at all, including system ones. I attached a picture of the storage details. It goes through the setup process each time I reboot, and wipes any changes I make. I can't download apps, and I can't install them via APK because the phone thinks there is no space left. I don't have BMM installed in this system so I can't turn the delay up, to my knowledge. There is no file explorer on this system, so I can't go into the app files directly. I have tried connecting with "Android Commander" but it doesn't want to detect my device. I installed the ADT bundle for windows to get the usb driver, but still nothing... I also tried a factory reset again, but that does the same thing as rebooting for me now.
The Challange:
To my knowledge, I'm out of options, but I know most of you guys do this to see what you are capable of. I'm sure you've dealt with bigger issues. Can anyone help? Would Verizon techs be smart enough/have the right software to actually reset the phone?
Thanks!

I like to see you getting out of that one anyway, have you tried switching default storage? I mean try that I think that way the phone "thinks" your external sd is your internal memory and vice versa that might give you a chance to install BMM or a root explorer and debloat system..you got nothing to loose give it a try man,go to settings/advance and switch default storage, good luck.

Unfortunately, I tried that. The problem was that it requires a reboot, which wiped any settings
HOWEVER, the fix was along that line, it just required me to go into android shell and tell it manually.
I followed these steps to make the phone install to the SD card (internal phone app partition really) by default (because I'm a newb, I can't post links, so just google "how-to-install-android-apps-to-the-sd-card-by-default-move-almost-any-app-to-the-sd-card").
After doing so, I still had a problem downloading BMM from the market, but I think that was due to the market being outdated and troublesome, so I had to find an apk version instead.
I installed it, and restored the boot delay to 30 secs.
I then immediately booted to system_1 to feel safe.
I may try loading the Liquid Smooth rom again once I've fixed the partitions, but I will NEVER turn BMM's boot delay to 0 s EVER again...

[Q] Root 1.4.3 so I'm stuck with it rooted running android/nook together

The original post for the easy instructions to root the NT are a mess. The original instructions for doing it on Windows aren't even complete. I started building the files by following the Linux version of the instructions since they actually made sense and had the files you were to get.
If I'm not mistaken though I ended up using this to root the nook although it wasn't really what I was looking for considering I had CM7 and I would get a boot choice to go nook or android. That all stopped when the sd card I was using freaked itself and failed leaving me stuck at the N screen unless I pulled the SD card. My intentions were to leave the NT stock and not mess with it and run Cyanogen on the sd card. What it appears I'm left with though (without installing a rom) is a co-mingling Nook OS and Android OS since I'm now able to choose a launcher and I have Android screens with those launchers in the Nook itself. Which this is kinda cool because I don't have to reboot the system to switch to the reader anymore.
I installed Launcher 8 to give it some WIN8 love and easy access for my fiancee whom uses a mouth stick to get around in android easier. My problem I'm having is the android system doesn't seem complete. I'm assuming there are gaps missing or something because things are slow and some things aren't working when the icon is selected. Which simulates the program isn't actually there or the files to make it work.
Obviously there wouldn't be a phone but there are other things that used to work with the dual booting CM7 installed on the old SD card that aren't working now.
Since I'm not exactly sure if the above is how I ended up rooting the device I don't even know where to go from here to adding anything to it.
I'm not a developer and loaded this thing up about this time last year. The scenery has changed over the year and I'm kinda lost with all this again. Spent most of the day yesterday trying to figure out where I was and really got no where. So hopefully someone get's what I'm talking about and can give me the push in the right direction.
Not looking to make it dual boot again because this is easier for my fiancee to use like it is. Just want everything to work right like it should. I couldn't tell you what version android I have on here because I never actually loaded an individual rom yet there is android functioning on the device. My idea was to get the newest android which isn't 4.4 yet and is actually from what I can tell that is working would be JB. Yet I have no clue what this thing is running on with the loader and such I have on it.
I'm not enirely sure what it is you want, You say you don't want dual boot, and yet you talk about the non-wotking sd card as if you actually want dual boot.
Anyway, IF you want dual boot you don't need to root it at all. Just burn an sd card with a ready-made CM10.x image, pop it in and boot up. Then choose either internal, stock boot or run from sd-card.
Here is a link to a page with ready-made sd card image file:
http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/cm10-0-jellybean-sdcard-img-for-nook-tablet/
(This guy, Succulent, has inages of later versions of CM10.x as well, but this is the one I had a link to wothout having to go look for it.)
If you want the Tablet back to fresh "out of the box" condition you can use a repart.img that you can find by looking around a bit. I have referred to it in several posts, but I don't have a link at hand right now, Google is your friend...

*The non working sd card*
It was running as a dual boot before with cyogen or something like that and it would be selectable to go to Nook or the CM7 Android. That card somehow just died and can't even be seen in Windows anymore (have an rma filed with Patriot).
I rooted the nook and now I have what appears to be a partial android OS running inside the BN Nook OS but things aren't functioning. (I prefer it like this vs the dual boot way) So it's like I need a gapps file or something. All settings links lead to the Nook OS settings page and nothing get's me to the Android settings which is why I state it appears to be a partial Android OS. I don't even know what OS version it is because nothing fully functions with the Android side of things. (Take the Launcher8 Loader I installed. No icons actually open what they should. Selecting an icon leads to that icons settings and not what it should be opening. I have the same loader on my Skyrocket so I know how it SHOULD function and selecting an icon to get options for it is not correct. You have to press and hold to get the button to set the icon options.)
You won't get "proper" Android just by rooting. For that you need to install CM x.x. Either install it internally or run it from sd (that you apparently don't want to do)
I have not followed the particular root process you used, but both of the ones I have used myself come with gApps included.
The ones I have used:

The first one (Brian’s) require a 2 GB card the other one (Albert’s) just needs a very small card. (I think 128 MB would do, but I don’t have any that small to try)
Both give good instructions in their topics.
Both install gApps.

Brian's method looks a hell of a lot familiar like that may have been what I did instead but the listing of apps with his doesn't match what I have on the nook now: (only thing I didn't put in the list was what I installed off google play which is launcher8)
android reader
car home
chess
contacts
crossword
downloads
email
es file explorer
flash player settings
getjar
google search
home
home manager
home catcher
hulu plus
music player
my media
netflix
news and weather
nook friends
nook video
nookhwtest
nookviewer
nt hidden settings
pandora
play store
sound recorder
spare parts
splashtop remote
sudoku
superuser
talk
testcenterservice
twitter
That is all the installed apps that pull up under the Nook OS with using Launcher8 and swipping the homescreen to the left it pulls up a list of installed apps just like windows phone.
It must be brians anyway because I just opened the nook hidden settings and under the about Nook Tablet Hidden Settings it shows:

It is the development section I am aware of that and can read. I'm in the 10.2 thread which is actually what I want running on the NT. So what better place to get the help for it then in the thread for it like everyone else has.
Actually you are incorrect as you say nothing about returning the tablet to stock out of the box. Must have been someone else your thinking of. I don't want it to be out of the box though. The nook OS was already setup with apps and books etc. I just want to reverse the rooting I guess to remove the stock android from it so I can then use the links you provided to create a correct root and dual boot using wait for it.....

Really?? Read the last two lines in my first post in this topic.
Also, there is a sticky on top of the topic list in the development section about what is meant to go there and what's not: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1499105

Ok I stand corrected on that matter, but stock out of the box isn't what I want.
I'm not sure you can undo what you've done without loosing content. But as long as you backup your sideloaded stuff, your BN books and apps can be dowloaded at any time.
I suppose you can stay rooted and just disable your alternative launcher and what have you, but you said something about your system being slowed up, and I susoect fixing that without a wipe of some sort would be difficult. Could be wrong though snce I haven't dealt with that myself. Let's hope someone that knows better might come along with advice more to your liking.
While waiting for that you can always make one of the CM 10.x sd card images and run it.It will work completely independent from your trublesome stock OS.
System isn't slow at all also anything side loaded came from B&N so could also be redownloaded like the books. I was just hoping to keep all that intact as it was. There just aren't certain things working that should is all. I'm sure if I was a dev and understood all this stuff more clear I could fix it. I would rather take the easy cheesy way out and just redo it. lol Too much stuff around the house falling behind while messing with this thing.

The BN stock ROM is based on Android v3.2 ("Honeycomb"). Rooting it essentially enables you to install additional apps beyond those that came with the stock ROM, either via the Playstore or by side-loading & installing the apps' .apk files (rooting packages/tools themselves typically add some commonly used apps (Email, Playstore, etc.) to get the user started).
The risk of using rooted stock ROM on the NT (especially as BN won't be releasing any more update for it) is you're stuck with the Android 3.2 base, thus as developers' support for 3.2 wanes over time you won't be able to install newer apps or even newer updates of many current apps. This same "Android version obsolescence" consideration also applies to CM7 and CM9.
As such I think it make the most sense to install CM10 to replace the stock ROM internally on emmc. If you value stability over having the latest/greatest bells/whistles, try Succulent's CM10.0 version dated 12/31/12, or the CM official 10.1.3.

It will alltogether replace the Nook OS. As said in one of the posts in the development section thread they are mutually exclusive.
If you want to keep any of the original Nook functions you cannot run another Android veresion except from sd-card (meaning dual boot).

Unroot without going to complete stock??
Your options:
Unrooted = stock.
Rooted stock (what you run now) = stock but with access to system files and ability to use for example Google Play store.
Install CM 10.x internally = completely replacing Nook OS.
Dual boot: Running CM 10.x from sd card, leaving the Nook OS (rooted or unrooted, either works) internally. Remove sd-card or reboot through Cyanoboot (you can leave the card in the device) to get to Nook OS.

Yea haven't heard back from anyone on the returning to stock without the complete reset so It looks like I will be moving books over in the near future.
So I'm getting back onto this thing and finishing it up either tonight or tomorrow.
Resetting the Nook to stock can all be done via the nook settings correct? IE no sd card needed.

[Q] The official guide for installing cm12?

The official guide for installing cm12?
Hi everyone,
I have no idea if this is the place to post my question and I am really sorry if this is not.
Umm..
I would very much like to install CM 12 on the Nook Tablet from download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=acclaim&type= but I have no clue how to do it.
I tried the link wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_acclaim which seemed a good place to start for a newbie until I saw this sentence "Bear in mind that the boot.img included with the Clockwork Mod Recovery does not support CM > 10.1.3" and belatedly realised that it wouldn't work for CM 12. *facepalm*
Now I am back to square 1 of ignoranceville and it's pretty lonely over here.
If someone would be gracious enough to help me out, it would be hugely, ginormously appreciated with ALL of my heart! :fingers-crossed:
If you installed cm10 and you have custom recovery just boot to fastboot (hold the 'n' button during start) and install the recovery from cm12 thread. After this install cm12.
It's worth noting that you have to convert userdata partition to f2fs for optimal performance. There are two tutorials how to do it in the cm12 thread.
As I understand it.
It is indeed lonely out there in the stix, fellow noob. When I first came to XDA looking for rooting instructions, I was told to read read read, and I have indeed been doing that. But even then my knowledge has a few gaps.
First, I have a factory resetted stock BNTV250 tablet that is at version 1.4.3. I want to get to the CM12 Lollipop 'acclaim' nightlies on github.
As far as I can understand, these are the current instructions as a general overview;
1) Go from BN stock (what I currently have) to CM10. There are a couple of threads around that have enough information to get someone to this point. You format the (micro) SD card on your computer for fat32.
2) Then use the TWRP 2.8.5.2 from that thread on a properly formatted SD card (now ext4?) card to use the desired image (in my case CM12). Reboot and install CM12 using TWRP.
3) Then, to increase the performance (highly suggested) go to the "CMxx [sdcard as Emulated] {Walkthrough} Guide." So you can merge partitions into one 'single' large partition. But I am not sure if this can include the external SD card that I want to use or not (i.e. in that same partition). Also, I am not clear what is the largest size of SD card I can use on the nook?
I am also unclear if I could use an external USB keyboard or not with that (with a micro USB to standard female USB adapter)?
Ok. That's scenario #1. I *could* get eventually through all that and end up with CM12 installed.
But the *much* preferred scenario #2 that I do not know if it exists or not (indications are that exists for some versions CMXX) is to;
1) format an SD card, transfer the proper files onto it, put it in the nook, reboot,
2) the nook boots and automagically installs the desired CM12 image (or prompts a couple of times).
3) Then you shut down, remove the SD card, reformat it (ext 4?) , and install on device to expand usable memory for all those movies/music someone might want to watch.
I really do not know if scenario 2 exists exactly. I do know that #1 can be done.
As I said, I'm a noob like OP, and if anyone can fill in a couple of the gaps while I wait on the memory card to be delivered, I would appreciate it!
Edit: I don't understand why it's not possible to "sideload" TWRP (or something similar) onto 1.4.3 stock nook, then install an CM12 image from there.
The XDA forums can be like a maze sometimes!
I also am having trouble with anything higher than cm-10.1 . I have jelly bean working on my nook tablet (bntv250a) right now. With the usual bugs
These are the files I have working now. cm-10.1-20130117-19-acclaim-HD.zip and gapps-jb-20130812-signed.zip I have tried many other combinations of 10.1 and 10.2 and 11.1 always seem to end in boot loop. But I can seemingly ALWAYS boot those two files and bring jelly bean back. So I don't think there is anything fundamentally wrong with my install technique. Probably WRONG though !!!
I did finally try the latest cm12 and it amazingly did boot and not loop. BUT...... It immediately said android updating. Went through about 95 updating and then finally got to the welcome screen. Others have seem a million popups saying goo apps not working or something to that effect.
Anyway I was able to connect to wifi and start the registration. Unfortunately it was running VERY VERY SLOW !!! The keyboard kept disappearing and was so SLOW that I never made it through.
I am taking note of what kodjo said in a post above about f2fs. I'm going research that and see if I can figure it out. Kind of a last ditch effort.
Keep up the good work folks

Had to revert back to this: cm-12.1-20151007-SNAPSHOT-YOG4PAO331-acclaim.zip
This is the gapps I'm using. Works fine with the 20151007 rom : open_gapps-arm-5.1-pico-20150923
Is there anyone using these old nooks anymore ?
Would it be possible for someone to post links to ROM's and GAPPS that are working on their 16gb B&N acclaim nook ?
That would be really appreciated. Then I can determine if it's my hardware or just my install.

Z4 RK3368 Android LP5.1/MM6 Octa Core 64bit 2/16gb TV Box

Hey Guys,
I have a couple questions about this android box I purchased that's had me somewhat puzzled.
I have been an avid android user over the past many years. I am familiar with flashing tons of roms to all the phones I have had. Except my s6, it just sucks for roms. Anyways I have purchased the android box in this link (can't post links this new) I can't seem to fine a manufacturer website, I've Google a million things about the box and searched but I can't find anything. even in the instruction book there's no website or anything.
basically I'm looking to figure out how to at least update this box. there's no option in about device. also I don't like how the flash drive on the device is split into nand flash and regular storage. I would like to merge them all into one. I am also looking for custom roms that might enable me to achieve that, however nowhere I look has this box in their forums or anywhere. maybe it's a cloned box? there are other boxes that have the exact same components (or so they say) with custom firmware, however I don't want to chance it and rich bricking this device.
anyone that can offer any help or lead me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. thank you in advance!

I just picked up one of these about a week ago and found instructions to install TWRP and update SuperSU. The box had 'root' out of the box but it was some specialized root based on an old version of SuperSU (1.93 I believe).
I have successfully installed TWRP 2.8.7.0 and updated to SuperSU 2.46.
Since this is just an android tablet essentially, does anyone know if you can flash these ROMs through TWRP?
Not to my knowledge, just use above tool. It will go alive once you are in bootloader with usb otg cable connected to win (of course with driver pack etc. installed). Titanium or else can do that, instead of trying to press reset button while powering on. Of course recovery will go back to default.

Are you running liamstears custom ROM or the 12/22 factory firmware?
The split internal storage is something I would like to do without, but I was wondering if it was changed on the 12/22 factory firmware?
12/22 firmware. Fast and stable.
Havent tried liamstears yet. Feedback if you do please.
awesome thanks! thats what I suspected when I was going through the firmwares for these devices. I just wasn't sure if the z4 rk3368 device would work on this one. I've seen a few brands with z4 and as I know with phones.. wrong brand and you're bricked lol. anyways.. I ended up buying a tronsmart vega s95 telos.. but it didn't come rooted. so I rooted it and now I'm getting play services force close and all sorts of bugs and errors.. maybe I'll just keep the z4. it seems to work better.
what link did you follow to get twrp installed?? same thing I'm guessing, punch z4 twrp in google and eventually come upon the right place.
12/22 factory firmware? mines stuck at Nov 10 I think.. it won't let me update using the rk settings app.. which is why I was fed up with it in the first place lol.
12/22 firmware. Unified 16gb App storage. More available with microsd card. Fully functional Kodi with channels, etc. 4k HEVC x265 movies. Youtube 1080p.
Easiest method to update rom is to put extracted update.img from zip file
http://chinagadgetsreviews.blogspot.ro/2016/01/download-latest-android-lollipop-511.html?m=1
on a sdcard / usb and boot. After about a minute into the Android desktop, system will ask for update prompt. Only applicable to system still with default recovery.
If you have some stability issues or with different recovery, you can backup your apps / data with Titanium etc. and then use above Factory tool restore new rom.
These roms usually come with their own recovery, but some modded ones with TWRP/full root, supersu and all. But you dont really need them.
thanks a lot man! I'm downloading right now and will test it on my box tomorrow after work!
I've tried 100 times and it just keeps saying failed to mount /mnt/external_sd (no such device)
I'm using my USB flash drive.
this is becomming a huge pain in the just to update I'm starting to think why this company can make these products and not have any support or anything for it . and that flash tool is in mandarin and I can't even figure out how to work that. I put in the update.img and press go.. but whenever I try to boot to download mode like you mentioned in one of the posts it just turns off the box.. this thing is literally a piece of junk. and so is this tronsmart vega s95.. same thing. it's extremely frustrating. whoever developed this z4 box did a really chappy job on the firmware.. and I do not recommend it to anyone..
If you had gone through the instructions pdf, it clearly shows how to change into English by pressing the World icon. Remember in bootloader mode the tv screen would be black, if you are using the tool. The big red button will turn into green to show readiness.
For automatic update you dont even have to go into recovery as seen in attached image. Easiest.
Hi Roland,
love to see that there are already XDA-members looking at the Z4 TV box. I have just ordered one and hope to get it within a few weeks. Just some dumb questions, hoping you can provide me with some information:
- I see that there are several 'versions' of the Z4: for instance Acemax, but I have ordered the Andoer. Are those just different manufacturers?
- Are there any differences in model/content (installed app's) per manufacturer?
- If my Andoer turned out to have an older firmware than the 22/12, could I still use the Acemax 22/12 firmware you refered to in your link?
- Kodi will be preinstalled, I saw. I do not know what version of Kodi that will be, but can it just be updated to the most recent version in the Google Play Store?
- I do not know what other apps are installed, but is it possible to de-install apps you do not need, or are they part of the firmware and impossible to delete
I know, part of the answers I surely will discover once I got the Z4, but I just can't wait to start experimenting, even it is only in my mind
Thanks in advance!
Jos
hi Roland
I tried that batch tool first which is the one I couldn't change languages in lol. but the other tool with the red button I changed into English. however I did not know that it would remain blank when in download mode. I will have to give it one more go tonight with it. I figured that I loaded it into bootloader and the z4 box light turned red so I thought it was off and didn't load to bootloader.
I also did the USB update and it would just fail on me every time I used it. the update prompt did come up and I pressed install. perhaps I need to check if USB debugging is on. I think it is but it wouldn't hurt to check. but I think I will have to go through the factory tool to update way for sure.
thanks for your help roland, I will write back after I give it another go tonight!
i can't find the 22/12 update ! can anybody share the link direct to firmware ?
@DriftJos
l have got an Andoer too. Most of these brands come from the same hardware factory and thus have the same specs/apps.
Yes you will use the same firmware https://mega.nz/#!JBBXgDgC!VSra8Hc6KR77Pvdw67eDpjeT_ku-TXdYgYaInSAfyvU (direct link @prisim) or several user dev roms. Unified 16gb app storage etc and the works.
You can uninstall bundled Kodi (by Titanium free etc.) by official Kodi Jarvis 16.0 beta 5 & such with pass-through support test builds @ http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=252852
Again you will be able to uninstall useless apps directly or through Titanium.

Always mention the firmware version you are having and which recovery? The automatic update should work if you still have the factory recovery.
Check the FactoryTool process in attached images.
I'm trying to flash the firmware that I downloaded from that China gadgets site that was mentioned on this thread. I think it's the stock 12/22 for the device. and I have stock recovery.
I extracted the update.exe file and saved it to my USB drive plugged it in and restarted. relieved the update prompt. chose install update and it rebooted into recovery and tried to apply the update but it fails. I'm not ready to give up yet with this device lol. it's just another platform I have to learn. it took me a bit with smartphones to figure it out back in the day.. perhaps it's the same thing now..
and I'm updated to 12/22.. awesome. those pictures really helped me man thanks.
now as for installing twrp and all that. you mentioned that it's not really needed? I'm assuming I can flash any rom given they are in .img format using factory tool. however the benefit of twrp would be an easier interface for creating nandroid backups and clearing cache/factory reset. perhaps I will install it. i might give leamstears rom a try. I will let you know how it is if I do.
thanks again!
so I updated to the new 12/22.. everything works fine except with Google play store.. I keep getting a can't retrieve source error with everything I try to download. I've refreshed and factory reset the firmware 5 times now and kept trying.
so I got fed up with the stock so I tried leamstears rom and it works great.. except sometimes it just becomes completely unresponsive. I'm starting to think there is something wrong with this box. even on stock firmware from the box I've been having issues with unresponsive freezing.
what do you think of the nvidia shield?

The PlayStore error you were seeing is because the 12/22 firmware comes with a *very* old version (5.2.x). The PlayStore will eventually update everything to the latest version by itself but if you don't want to wait, go over to apkmirror.com and download PlayStore 6.0.5 and install it manually. Once you do, it should also update the Play Services to 8.4.x and your should be good to go. I had this issue as well but I had seen it before and knew I needed to update.
So far the 12/22 version has been great, and having the unified internal storage is a huge plus.
If you feel so inclined, knowing that some of the custom builds of Kodi take up a large amount of space... there is this trick that was introduced in Helix:
http://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Change data location for Android
This will allow you to have only the Kodi app on internal storage (~125 MB) and any data from addons/programs etc. in another location (such as an external SD).
I often
1. Install Kodi on internal storage
2. Zip up the contents of org.xbmc.com directory
3. Copy it to external storage
4. Unzip it in /external_sd/kodi_data
5. Create the xbmc_env.properties file that references my Kodi data location.
6. Delete the contents of /sdcard/Android/data/org.xbmc.com/
Voila! You have freed up internal storage.... You can also persist a Kodi setup this way or run multiple custom installs. If you re-image your media box, you can re-install Kodi and as long as the xbmc_env.properties points to your external_sd with your Kodi data, it will start right up back into your setup... :good:

How to completely delete and install fresh Android on my Amlogic S805?

1st I want to say, thanks for checking my question!
Maybe the more precise question would be "How to flash Amlogic S805", right?
Ok then. In my Android TV I have installed Amlogic S805 (S805.5). Now I know that I probably made mistake buying that TV but it's ok afterall. It's 40' 1080p TV.
Everything is good except this Amlogic making me headaches every day, sometimes every week and sometimes it works for month or two without problems.
Whichever version of Google Play Services I install work for few days and then all apps start to crash, one by one until I ger white screen with text "This machine has serious error, need reboot to repair".
Sometimes it fixes problem and boots straight to Android home page but usually it just stuck with Boot loop, sometimes it's doing restarts immediately after Android animated logo appears... Also it happens that when I select "Smart TV" source of signal on my TV that there is no signal, even if I can see that Ethernet light on my router (which is right next to TV connected to it) is lit up, which means that it's connected and working but it's not giving picture?!
This Amlogic board has a reset button of course which just resets device, THERE IS NO ANDROID SYSTEM RECOVERY which is making me think that there is no way to wipe this broken OS for my Amlogic and install new one. When holding reset button 1st what's appearing is message saying that Android is being reseted, after setting all up it works normally until next few days it start to crash again.
Now, finally, my question is. Does any of you knows how and where I can download and install completely new Android (I would like to move from this Android 4.4.2 to Android 5.1) with SD Card? I have one photo right now of board itself, on board there is SD Card slot in which I can put SD Card with TWRP and Android 5.1? Will with SD Card inserted instead of reset Android System Recovery appear on screen (or TWRP) allowing me to wipe everything and install custom ROM or however is the right term to say?
How can I do it and is it even possible?
P.S But in short.
1. I need program that can make bootable SD Card with TWRP and Android 4 or Android 5
2. TWRP
3. Android OS
4. Little explanation how to correctly install new OS with TWRP.
Thanks!
