I got notification this morning that my S6 Edge was delivered to my office this morning! I'm on my way there.
I've downloaded Chainfire's Auto-Root in preparation of my S6 Edge.
My question is...
T-Mobile already issued an OTA update right out of the box, according to "the internet".
Should I:
1) OTA Update and then Root
2) Root and then OTA Update
3) Root and don't OTA Update
4) OTA update and don't Root, but wait a little while longer to make sure all the proper files are available
Thanks for any guidance...
My 2 cents: Don't take the OTA & don't root it either... Wait for few days till everybody (or especially the dev's) have their devices to see what's the best option.
if you are certain that you are going to root it, then just root the phone..
no reason to EVER take a OTA update, once the development starts on this phone, any thing good that is part of a t mobile update will be added in by the devs..
If you want to root it, I would do it first and hold off on the OTA until the full tarball is made available.
That probably won't be for a few weeks until the official release.
One note: You're probably going to need this version of Odin. Seems like other versions aren't working properly:

As someone who dove right in with the OTA and root, let me tell you my experience with the S6 Edge. First, the version of Odin that comes with the auto root does not work. You need to download 3.10.06. Then, when I pushed the autoroot for the S6 Edge, my device got hung on the initial splash screen and would never progress. After thinking I bricked my device, I decided to try the autoroot version for the regular S6. I pushed that and everything went through flawlessly. So, in short I am now on the latest OTA and rooted.

Hi, appreciate this is my first post and thus my question will be regarded with a certain amount of skepticism.. am only posting cos I think my issue is unusual and have not been able to find a similar question/answer through my searches on this forum
Basically, the issue is I rooted my Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300) a month or so ago, installed clockwork mod and superuser etc,. however I held off flashing a ROM because I figured my OTA jellybean update was imminent and wanted to see what the touchwiz jellybean looked like before installing Cyanogen or another ROM. wasn't sure if the OTA would come thru once I shed the stock ROM
So I waited for weeks for the OTA (am on Orange, now Everything Everywhere, in the UK) and have not received it.. last week I went onto Kies and saw there was a new firmware update, so I updated thru Kies thinking that might be what was needed to receive the OTA JB update. updated the firmware but still no JB update - however, now when I check my root status on Root Checker, or try to use any app that requires root, I'm told that I don't have "proper" root access.
My question is updating the firmware over Kies, did that mess up my root access.. am I now unrooted? (this doesn't seem correct) It seems to me I am in a limbo of sorts - not properly rooted anymore, but not fully unrooted either. I want to root the thing again so I can install cyanogen or supernexus, and I would appreciate advice on what to do - should I do a factory reset and then root again as before, or will this cause issues.. was just gon soldier ahead and do it but aware that this may cause problems if my phone already has files from the previous attempt on there.. for example the SGS3 toolkit V.6.0.0 I'm using says not to proceed with its root operations on a phone "that's already rooted" so am hesitant to proceed. Any advice would be appreciated. cheers
You've lost root with the update, just root again and it's all good.
We have 4 GS5s in the family. I towel rooted all, and have been diligent updating them through the stock firmware releases. 3 of the 4 were updated to NG3, but I forgot to update one of them (was on NE6). That phone received the Tmobile message to update, which I declined.
I have since updated that phone to NG3 using Mobile Odin Pro (still rooted). I figured I was good. This morning, it asked again to update.
My guess is the update file was downloaded and sitting in some directory on the device, and that's triggering the update notice.
Question: Where would I find this file on the device so I can delete it?
Thanks...
No, a new update just rolled out, its NG4. Supposed to fix audio issues and such. But updating may cause you to lose root.

What he said, but you can ALWAYS root this phone again with ODIN. Yes, you'll trip knox, but tmobile doesn't care.

YOU CAN UPDATE WITH MOBILE ODIN PRO AND RETAIN ROOT. AFTER THAT YOU CAN UPDATE THE BOOTLOADER WITH PC ODIN BY FLASHING THE FIRMWARE ONLY FILE IN THE CP SLOT. ALL FILES ARE HERE http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2761412 THIS WILL NOT TRIP KNOX
To answer my own question: /cache/fota contains the update zip file. I deleted it, rebooted, but was still prompted to update (though it didn't redownload the file).
I have since updated all phones with NG4 using Mobile Odin Pro and PC Odin. All worked swimmingly well and still have root.
There are two relevant system apps. The OTA update app and the OTA update notification app. Simply disable the latter or both as you wish. A simple search will confirm the exact app names for you, although they are pretty obvious if you just look with a file browser. Some carriers, notably Verizon and ATT do like to rename such apps, typically by appending a prefix to the app name.

Hi there. I just broke my s6 and so had to go back to my old s4, heh. I currently have a rooted OC1, and I was looking at the latest info on available root methods and see that the OF1 can be rooted using kingroot. My phone shows an OTA available but repeatedly fails when trying to update.
My question is, should I try to figure out what is causing the failure, update the "right" way, and then root with kingroot? Or should I just figure out another way to get the update, like I think the old way was to downgrade to OC1, root, then odin the OF1 update. Should I just do that?
This happens when you try to ota on a rom which has root or has been modified. Just dont update it doesnt add any features
Hey guys,
I have my tablet since one week. I love it, all works fine, Xposed offers me OBB move and so on. But now I have a question:
How can I get the new Updates for my Tablet with ROOT/TWRP?I know OTA can't be updated due to TWRP, but is there any way to flash updates dirty?! (like with LineageOS, OxygenOS, ... )
At the moment, if I try to search for new updates, I get following message:
The operating system on your device hase been modified in an unauthorised way. Try downloading softwar updates using Smart Switch on PC or visit a customer service centre.
Maybe someone got an early version of the Tab S3 with early factory Android and can give some enlightenment.
Greetz,

First, this should be posted in the q&a section. You're going to have to flash the upgrade firmware tar in odin. Then re-set up your device and re-root. It's a pita. Google has gotten better at saving your apps and data, which helps, or use something like titanium backup
isn't it enough flashing stock recovery and uninstall supersu via app?
I've been away from Samsung devices for awhile, I've been using Nexus but just got a tab3. I haven't tried this but it's possible that you could flash the update.zip that would be pushed to your device using flashfire. You would probably also be able to retain root and TWRP. Maybe someone with more recent samsung use could confirm that. However, based on the message you're getting the update looks like it won't be pushed to your device. And afik samsung doesn't publish the ota, only the full firmware so someone here would have to capture the ota and post it. Whenever samsung gets around to providing an update we can play around with it and see.
PS, do you have a flashable copy of the stock recovery?
I got a new S9+ for my wife who does NOT want a rooted phone and all that that entails.
I was active in rooting many years ago, but have not strayed from the straight and narrow for some time.
I have a new unlocked SMG965U (not bought from Verizon) recently activated. It is Android 8.0.0, firmware .....BRK1 (I don't have the phone in front of me at the moment), last (and only) security patch dated Nov 1, 2018. I have noted from Verizon's web site they have moved up to pie, and have had quite a few security updates since that time. Looking for updates on the phone or through Smart Switch tells me the phone is up to date. There's a Verizon-Samsung utility that runs on PC for updating software that give an error message to the effect of "Firmware on phone does not support updating".
So, could someone point me in the right direction to determine, first, if it's possible to update the phone without rooting with stock firmware, and which guide I should use? Does Odin require a rooted phone, or is it simply a matter of me locating the proper update and following Odin directions?
Thanks
Odin does not require root and yes just need the correct update Sam mobile has all the latest files you need to use odin I would go there for what you need
