Hello everyone,
I wanted to take some time today to make a very clear and concise guide on how to complete the root process for the EVO3D. I understand that there is at least one other floating around at this point. If you don't have a firm grasp of how all of this works though, you may run into problems or have questions. I commissioned my guide to try and add clarity to the process and to also teach our communities newest members some of the ins and outs of modding our phones. The guide is far too large to post in a thread, therefore I've created a PDF of it and am offering it for download.
Feel free to mirror my guide and provide me with the link so that I can add it below.
Below is a Preface and Contents of the Guide. Feel free to ask questions or address any concerns you may have as I will be revising the guide.
The Complete Guide to Obtain S-OFF, Flash Recovery, and Install ROOT for the EVO3D
Authored by: sidepart of the
XDA-Developers Forum
Revision 1.1 - Published July 30, 2011
Preface
Prior to reading this document, please be aware that as a disclaimer, I am not responsible for anything that goes wrong in this guide. Some people will run into issues that others do not. This is especially true with the differing versions of the Android-SDK. Some advanced users are using an older version which uses different commands than are offered by the latest Android-SDK. I encourage you to ask questions and keep an open mind. Try to understand the commands that are given here, and how you might have to be flexible in changing them to work for your situation. If at any time you are not comfortable with this process I highly recommend seeking out assistance from a more knowledgeable friend.
What this Guide Assumes
I assume that you will be downloading the latest version of the Android SDK which at the time of this document’s creation is R12. I also assume that you are using Windows 7, but this translates very easily into Windows Vista or XP.
Disclaimer
I am not responsible for any problems or fatal errors that may or may not occur through the process of performing the instructions of this guide. If at any time you are not comfortable with this process I highly recommend seeking out assistance from a more knowledgeable friend.

Revision 1.1 - July 30, 2011
Fixed some glaring grammatical and spelling errors.
Added a Common Questions section under item 4b.
Added a common question to 4b,i. It instructs users on how to paste their Beta key-code into the Revolutionary EXE program.
Fixed some formatting.
Used your guide and had no problems thank you!
Have not used it yet but this is very helpful... will be rooting my wifes e3d tonight... wasn't going to do it off of the other thread... I had no idea what it was talking about. Thanks for taking the time to put this together

Kind of hilarious to see my access.log right now. Lots of people looking at the guide interspersed with a few people discovering my site's index.html.
Used your guide and almost worked flawlessly The only problem I had was flashing the TeamWin recovery with the following command: ..\tools\fastboot.exe flash recovery recovery-twrp-shooter-1.0.0.img
The img that I downloaded through the site was like 1.0.1, but the error was on my end. Otherwise awesome guide!
So much info!!! love it.. nice

I think they may have updated since I first published. I might see if I can emphasize that you're supposed to use the downloaded filename in the command.
Excellent guide!

I actually tried to load the zip from http://goo-inside.me/superuser and it wouldn't work. Retried it quite a few times and got the same error. I found an unsigned version of it in clark44's guide and that one worked just fine. Not sure what the problem was, hence my recommendation to grab superuser from the market and follow it's instructions instead. Seems to be working out well.
I think I might add something about this to the guide if too many people are running into the problem.
Any problems with not being able to send/recieve calls/texts with this? Haven't really messed around too much with the girlfriend's phone b/c she's terrified of not being able to get calls and what not..
I know this is a beta setup for now, so i'm assuming it'll turn into a simple one click type of thing when it gets to that point..?
Edit: I went through all this on my phone and had no problems really except having to call Sprint ..
Followed the guide as instructed...revolution wont recognize my device...it just hangs on waiting for device. I double checked to ensure usb debugging was enabled but it just hangs there.. Again i did follow the guide from step 1 and this is where im at...any suggestions?

I would take a look at the documentation for the Revolution EXE, it could shed some more light on the situation that you're experiencing. Off hand though, I do have some recommendations.
Do you have HTC sync installed? I was reading around and found that this was causing an issue with the revolution program. Try removing that first.
If that's not the case and this still isn't working, there could be a driver conflict with some previously installed android drivers on your system. To clear that up, I would recommend grabbing the latest HTC drivers mentioned in the Revolution documentation. This is the most recent link that I've found: http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe
The process may require you to manually remove the old drivers and manually install the new ones. If you're not certain of how to do this, it's beyond the help of my guide. I would encourage you to look up the process online or ask a friend to show you.
Hope this helps!

The only related issue that I've come across is the "Error 16" when provisioning the phone after s-off. As you found, this usually fixed with a call to Sprint. I'll never say, "never" though. Be aware that making modifications to the phone always carries with it an inherent risk, however small or unlikely. The risk of course is part of what makes it fun, but girlfriends (mine) seem to seldom understand this.
If the root method is ever released, there is potential for it to become more of a one-click procedure, but I don't think there's a guarantee of course.
Thanks for the guide!
I'm stuck though!
The Revolutionary Command Window says:
"Waiting for fastboot..."
And my phone rebooted into the HBOOT screen but it shows: S-ON
What should I do?
Is this in your guide?
1. Install drivers: http://www.multiupload.com/2OFYWZFCCR
2. Put phone in full boot, usb debugging on , charge only.
3. Uninstall HTC Sync if installed.
4. Profit.

Updating the driver worked..im good to go now.. thnx..
[update 2] I just summarized a way to backup and restore (all based on other great DEV's work, just put in one place) your TS before your play with your TS here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52820278#post52820278
Go check it if you plan to root your TS!
[update] With the help of cheahcl, I got the latest F/W for 4th List 1/8/2100. With the MTK SP_Flash_Tool, I was able to upload a corrected F/W for my TS and everything goes back to normal!
Thanks for cheahcl for his dump and Lokifish Marz for his All in one tools! You guys really saved my day! (and my TS).
A Quick summary: Do NOT use any method on XDA yet to root or change TWRP recovery! It seems the TS of 4th list is different in some way than the ones before which render most of stuffs here invalid. However, fear not to play around since now we have a way to go back to stock!
In my experience, I found that it's really difficult to truly brick a MTK based system. The system will just reject flashing at slightest sign that a F/W is not compatible. The only cache is you need to have the "correct" F/W specifically for your TS!
In my observation, OMate made changes between each delivery. For Example, the 4th list of 1/8/2100 is different in (At least F/W configuration) of the 3rd or earlier 1/8/2100.
------------------------below is my original story of what I tried and failed--------------------------
Just got mine (1/8/2100) 5 hrs ago! I am on the 4th list. The delivery in FAST!
The watch starts normally. I played with it for a while, than decided to root it, install TWRP and apply the security hack made by +Lokifish Marz
Now I have a brick! Just after 30 min I receive the watch!
<<Can anyone help me here?>>
First of all, in respecting to all great DEVs, I have NO intention to blame anyone else but myself. (I did this to my own watch!)
Second, I have been rooting Android since Cupcake day, so I am not a Noob... (or so I think...) I am very familiar with ADB/fastboot... and use almost daily.
So here is the guide to brick. If Anyone have any idea please help me out!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1st, I tried to use this tool to root+TWRP+scurity patch http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2713183&page=2 knowing it's NOT tested against 1/8/2100. I just tried anyway... The script went with a lot of errors, it seems the script cannot locate correct files but still push the security patched files into the /system/app (and other places).
I turn on the watch, but it just stuck at boot logo (the orange "Truesmart" logo without animation)
Also, the Recovery is still stock, TWRP is no where to be seen.
Since ADB still works, I adb reboot couple times, pull the battery, let the watch run for 2hrs, etc... Nothing works. The watch just stuck at the boot logo.
Than I follow this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2641261 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2641261 with Stock firmware downloaded from http://d-h.st/users/Lokifish Marz/?fld_id=30814#files (Omate_1-8_2100_TrueSmart_20140328.zip)
I installed all drivers, restarts my Win 7 (x86) pc (several times), and after several attempts the Flashtool just flash in the Firmware.
The Tools flash with a green Check mark, indicating everything is ok!
However the watch just become a brick after this....
Than this completed the brick process! Now the watch won't even turn on, when I try to use Flash tool again, it always say S_FT_ENABLE_DRAM_FAIL. Google this and you find it's due to flashing wrong F/W, but I don't know where went wrong!
Anyone else have same problem or it's just me? Anyone have solution?
You said everything...
You made mistake but that shouldn't be problem.
You soft brick it using wrong recovery image and root tool but as you said, you had adb and fastboot on - so if you know what are you doing and I see you know (except of that pary of flashing something that's not for your device .) you should be able to flash stock firmware back.
If you can flash another firmware, try with other firmware...
Don't know what else to say....
Omate build piece of sh*t and we'll all have problems with it...
It's very hard to differentiate devices.
All of them has same nr on mother boards and, as I said, we will all have problems with Omate and their TrueSh*t...

Ha! Very true! I think you are right! I believe Omate have many segmentation on their HW/SW, even with same model number.... A lot of things changes between versions which makes the "factory image" not compatible....
Anyone has the latest (4th list) 1/8/2100 TS who could dump their whole image for me would be helpful...
I would like to help you but mine is 2nd list and it's still on customs office...
Omate shipment experts, you just gotta love them....

Not sure what to tell you on this. A board revision change is possible as the Omate_1-8_2100_TrueSmart_20140328.zip was from a 1/8 2100. I can't even test stuff anymore as I gave one to a tech student that's studying network and system security and the other four were stripped down, reworked into data gathering modules and then donated to near space projects.

Thanks Lokifish for your comment... Is there anyway to get a latest F/W? If you know anyone I could contact, please PM me... Thanks!
Anyone have yet received a 1/8/2100 on 4th list could PM me a Factory F/W dump?
I tried another XP PC with all steps checked and rechecked but still... No luck...
Teach me how to do a dump and I'll dump it for you. I was also looking how to backup my stock firmware before playing around, seeing as no one has our version of firmware uploaded for restore yet.
Also received mine yesterday and firmware version is 20140513, pretty damn recent.
You guys are going to have to help each other out on this one. I've already deleted 90% of any and all Android dev stuff from my personal file server and computer. This includes tools, guides and work going as far back as the original HTC Evo.

Thanks a lot! First of all, Currently don't do anything posted on XDA yet since most of them will not work with this version of TS... (This is where I am now...)
First of all, please get all necessary tools directly from this post "All Tools" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2734687 (Do NOT download or install any other things there!)
Follow those steps: (modified from link above)
1. Download "All Tools"
2. Install Universal ADB Drivers (included in All Tools) <--If you already have ADB up and running, it's not necessarily, then.
3. Enable USB Debugging on watch
4. Launch MTKDroid Tools
5. Connect watch to PC
6. Please follow the instruction from here: http://www.chinaphonearena.com/foru...up-MTK6592-MTK6589-MTK6577-and-all-MTK-Phones
a. Skip everything above and just starts from "B) Open ADB prompt to begin communication with the phone" .
b. Don't worry about the recovery thing... TS comes with a recovery which is not locked and you can do everything this article said with only stock recovery. (also no busy box is needed, nor su since TS run everything in root!)
c. You could also refer to the video guide below for details
7. it's okay to just provide the file you got after finishing the step "C) Read back the ROM with MTK Droid Tools" I should be able to do the Step D) and after myself.
Thanks a lot for your help!

The space was given to me for free as a recognized developer and contributor. Seeing that I have left development completely, it is not right that I continue to use the services. So at the end of the week the files will be purged and I will ask the xda remove my developer and contributor status.

Oh! I see the situation... In this case, may I have your permission to host those files somewhere (maybe by XDA moderator, or ...me?) so they could still be accessible?
I could feel your feeling on this fiasco. Must be quite frustrate experiences for you...

I've done step D as well, good to just flash it I guess.
Let me know if it worked, before I start messing about. I'm not good in all these stuff. Been flashing since HD2 days but still, just a tutorial follower, can probably count Linux commands I know with 1 hand.

Dear cheahcl,
Thank you soooo much for the image! I successfully restored my TS and now EVERYTHING GOES BACK TO NORMAL!
If you want to play around, please don't forge to back up your IMEI! since the MTK SP_Flash_Tool will wipe your IMEI!
Please follow this guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2631953 under "IMEI Backup Procedure" before proceed anything dangerous!
After this, you are good to go! MTK is non-brickable (from what I learned for the past day... All you need is a corrected factory F/W!)
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!

don't sweat it, haha i needed to backup my original firmware as well anyways, seeing how scarce it is around here and all the weird discrepancies in HW/SW versions. good to know i can always fall back on this file. haha yeah i've also backed up my imei. time to play around and see.
cheers
Ive managed to get my brand new watch stuck in a bootloop after using framaRoot to root it. (I know, I know)
Now, I am able to boot into recovery mode or factory, and tried a factory reset. No luck, so i'm pretty sure the issue is in the /system partition.
Does anyone know if there are zip files somewhere that i can flash from recovery, to restore the system partition?
Device:
- 1GB / 8GB / 2100MHz Version
- Originally unrooted
- OUI 2.1
- Modem Ver: MOLY.WR8.W1315.MD.WG.MP.V4, 2013/08/14 18:16
- No other modifications besides the rooting (which did work already before I rebooted)

The TS (or any MTK based system) does not use the usually "recovery backup/restore" way we familiar of, instead it goes the "special tool on PC backup/restore" method. You need ask people who receive their watch in around the same time as yours with same configuration to backup their watch FW with MTK tools than restore with said FW.
Basically what I had done in this thread!
Please follow my another guild to see how to do this...

HEY! It worked
I'm back at a functional Truesmart
Thank you soo much
And in case three smiley's aren't enough:
Also, quick note for other people bricking their phone, my issue (after I bricked it again), was that I used an app to change the density property, which broke the boot of the watch.
The app that broke my watch was: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.birdapi.android.dpi
So following Davey126's advice, I started looking into doing a rollback on my apollo 3.2.5. I managed to get the play store up and running after some work, and grabbed the latest prop editor following the instructions in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2782159 So far so good. I then edited the four lines in question, and allowed the device to reboot.
The changes didn't seem to take. After the reboot I ended up on the same version as where I started, and the four lines I changed were back to their unedited versions. Since I have run into a problem with r/w permissions before, I suspect I'm missing them here as well - but I haven't seen the thread/entry on how to change those. Any help would be appreciated.
If, those aren't the issue, then I'm lost again.

Stop!! You are following the wrong procedure and could brick your device! Don't reboot again. I will post further info shortly (on a call at the moment...).
EDIT: Sorry for the earlier drama; you were headed for a cliff ...
Recheck the guide (post #1) from the thread you linked. Note there are two sections: One for devices below 3.2.5 and a second for 3.2.5-3.26. You want the second section. There is no need to mess with build prop. You should immediately restore that file to its previous state (hopefully you have/made a backup). Then follow the rest of the instructions. Again, sorry for sounding like an alarmist worry wort. A quick check of the forums will surface many hdx carcases in the sad hands of those who didn't follow instructions or made simple mistakes (we all make mistakes).

No worries!
1. Yes, I had a backup.
2. Nothing got broken, so everything is peachy.
3. The way that post is written, there is absolutely no easy way to tell (for the average user) that you still don't edit the file with build prop. All it appears is that you need a different roll back file for 3.2.5 and 3.2.6 variants instead of the earlier versions.
Someone should likely edit that post - or at least add something to it to make it more clear. I know I read every entry in that thread and I never caught anything that told me "hey, you are on one of these two versions. Skip the build prop step and just push the update. it'll work fine from there."
However, I thank you for the added information. I'll give it a whirl and see if that works. It would be nice to get beyond at least point C so I can get to the steps I want to do. I keep getting stuck at the point just before where things get nice.

It's an old post created before 3.2.5+ was released. I do not know if the OP is still around. As many others have commented the hdx forums are generally a mess (with a few notable exceptions) as the landscape is continually changing. No one has the time/energy to create and validate step-by-step guides given the number of permutations/combinations and high risk of bad outcomes given a touchy device with limited recovery options...especially for those who can't install twrp and/or unlock their bootloader.
Note to newbies: Many tinkerers come to these forums thinking all the cautions are the byproduct of excessive hand wringers blowing smoke out of a certain orifice. Hey, if I create a brick I'll just whip out my magical fastboot cable, arsenal of fastboot commands and make everything right again. Err, no. Fastboot cables don't work on the HDX nor to most other recovery techniques. Tread carefully...respect the kindle. Rewards will come soon enough.
Hey, already pushed the thank you, for all of your help, but I've got one more fundamental question that might seem kind of stupid, but what exactly does this mean?
"4. Put "update-kindle-1X.3.1.0_user_310079820.bin" in SAME folder,
. . . . .
7. put update-kindle-1X.3.1.0_user_310079820.bin" in internal storage."
I skipped steps 5 and 6, because they make sense to me. But step 4 loses me. which "same" folder? None of the previous steps mention anything about a folder where anything is being stored. Likely this is referring back to that same previous post you referenced above.
I have no trouble with step 7 - that makes sense - but I'm suddenly worried about this mysterious step 4, especially since "SAME" is in all caps.

Tanks for the thanks. As a new comer I struggled a bit and got help from some kind souls in these forums. Giving back ...
It is a tethered operation as you probably gathered. Step 4 means you need to put the .bin file in the same folder on Windows where install.bat lives. If you edit the batch file you'll see it generates a signed flashable image from the bin file and then issues a bunch of adb commands on your behalf. For Step 7 copy the bin file to root (not sdcard) on your hdx. Then reboot.
Footnotes:
- when you download the batch file be sure to use the blue "download now" button. Filename should be "rollback.zip" .The orange button yields an executable called "rollback.zip.exe". Probably fine but since I can't see into it can't tell for sure. Also, make sure to download the file appropriate for your device (7"/Thor or 8.9"/Apollo).
- be sure to immediately disable wifi after performing the update; otherwise Amazon may push a nasty update of their own. As a precaution I would advise deleting all existing wifi profiles and make sure you are not within range of an open hotspot. Don't want the Kindle to auto connect and update while you are sleeping.
- I would strongly recommend flashing twrp immediately after, test and backup of you stock rom from within twrp. Leave the image on your kindle if you have room.
- Once everything is working to your satisfaction flash the nexus rom (v2.0.5) and optionally the 3.2.3 bootloader update as described in earlier posts. Read up on any caveats.
- (optional) Unlock your bootloader. This not necessary to run Nexus and CM11 but is for some CM12 builds. An unlocked bootloader also opens additional recovery options should you loose twrp. That said, unlocking the bootloader is not for the faint of heart and carries its own set of risks.

Okay. New headaches.
First part of the rollback happened. I'm now on 14.3.0.0. That worked okay. I grabbed the 14.3.1.0 update and loaded it on but then nothing happened. No further updates.
At this point I figure 1 of 3 things happened. Either:
A. I put it in the wrong place - I stuck it in Internal Storage (/storage/emulated/0), I would move it to either / or /root, but I can't - "no space available" error when I attempt to move it via es file explorer
B. I could keep turning OTA off and on and hope it eventually takes, but how many times exactly?
or C. I'm missing something with wireless needing to be on (or off but in some weird mode) or whatever. I'm just worried about having an automatic update to another newer version that I can't fix.
So what am I missing?

Hum. Everything seems ok. Bin file is in the correct location (/storage/emulated/0). Make sure OTA is enabled using the same tool/technique you originally used to disable (there are several methods) and reboot. Some posters claim they had to toggle it on/off a few times. While my device recognized the update fairly quickly (minutes) others mentioned it took a while. Keep checking settings->device->system updates. Some say the update did not take until WiFi was disabled. Might want to try that first. I recall seeing something about airplane mode but can't immediately find the post.
btw, you can mitigate the automatic update risk by making sure there are NO WiFi profiles on your device and you are not in range of any open hotspots (if possible).
Well, still no dice.
I've reset OTA (cycled off then on) and rebooted about 10 times now. I've also attempted various options of wifi on, off, and in airplane mode. The only thing I haven't done is connected to an actual network and pushed the check now button (I'm not quite that dumb). The lovely device just keeps taunting me with 14.3.0.0 and refusing to do anything else.
Very frustrating.
I'm gonna head for bed and look at it fresh sometime tomorrow. Maybe it will miraculously fix itself while I ignore it (but I really doubt that will be the case).

Sorry for your troubles. One or more of the following are likely culprits:
- OTA capability not fully restored (try HDX Toolkit if you haven't already)
- ensure the .bin file name matches exactly and is located in the proper folder
- Verify .bin MD5 on the device (use a tool like hash droid) MD5=0F2BC5278C057E7A6B4823B0F68D0727
- use notepad to view the batch file; make sure all the files made it to respective directories on your HDX
- repeat the preliminary steps with your device tethered
If everything checks out then the real fun begins. You'll need to comb threads for others who have experienced a similar problem. You are looking for some morsel that may provide a path forward. Frustrating - yes! One reason there are not step-by-step tutorials as everyone's device seems to respond differently; too many uncontrolled variables. Not sure anyone really knows what all those variables are.
Remain calm and don't do anything crazy. Be wary of fixes that involve manually modifying build.prop or flashing via adb. Both are legitimate tools/techniques in skilled hands. Used incorrectly they can (and usually do) yield a brick.
So I was attempting to write a nice long message about how I was using the right toolkit, and how to check on OTA messages to verify whether it was performing correctly, when all of a sudden I look down at my device and it suddenly stopped being obstinate.
No idea what I did. It just started playing nice.
14.3.1.0 now installed. I'm going to go get a drink.

Funny how some devices take their time processing update files. Would love to know the criteria for checking and if processing can be manually triggered. Don't forget to disable OTA or keep WiFi off as long as there is a version of stock os in the system partition. One you load nexus or some other rom OTA worries will be history.
Edit: Enjoy that drink; you earned it
So I thought I would just report back with a final update as of 20 minutes ago:
Finally got the device rolled forward to 14.3.2.4
Re-rooted
Re-safestrapped
Backedup
Partitioned
And Nexus 4.2.2 running perfectly fine in Rom slot 1.
I'll go add a few apps later to personalize and make it wife-friendly. Thanks to everyone here and especially Davey126 for the patient assistance. I'll probably be back at some point in the near future to figure out the next step, but for now I'm gonna go enjoy an ad-free device for awhile.

Glad to hear you are back in business! An interesting choice to upgrade to 3.2.4 vs 3.2.3. Native twrp requires 3.2.3 or lower so no CM11/12 or bootloader unlock. I do not believe there are meaningful differences between Nexus v1.0.1 (safestrap edition) and v2.0.5 (native) so nothing lost at this point. Plus you still have access to stock with a simple reboot which can be an advantage. But it is unlikely other roms will be adapted to run under safestrap. Btw, downgrading from 3.2.4 is a bit tricker than 3.2.5/3.2.6. You many need to upgrade first.
Don't forget to reblock OTA if you haven't already. Enjoy your 'new' device

So it turns out I may have done myself a big favor by going the safe route. I'm not positive of course since I haven't tried the "non-safe route", but I'm guessing I'm right. I recently obtained a bluetooth KB to use with the fixed device - specifically the bear motion KB/case - cause I figured if I only spent $40 on the tablet, I'm not going to spend more than that on the KB. Since one of the purposes for this is to allow me to use it for remote work options, I wanted a better KB than pulling up the native one - especially if I'm running teamviewer, the screen is small enough as it is.
In any event, the Nexus SS edition has troubles pairing up with the KB (already logged a bug report on it), so I'm probably going to have to swap over to a different rom. Since I've already been through the process, and I've seen your updated posts in another thread, I'll just upgrade, rollback, and follow the twrp, cm11/12 route instead.
I just need to check and see if anyone has used this combination of hardware with another rom and made them work out.

Have you tried stock Fire OS yet? Should be an easy test given you are on Safestrap with (presumably) stock in the base slot. That would help rule out any native compatibility issues.
If you opt for a different rom might try the native version of Nexus first (v2.0.5) after you get twrp loaded as it's an easy test. Possible (albeit unlikely) Safestrap is interfering. Of the two CM varients CM11 would see the better choice today as the latest CM12 build still seems to have some issues with BT. As always, watch the forums for updates.

Second thing I did. Rebooted into the stock rom and retested. KB works fine on that slot. So it doesn't appear to be a safestrap issue - more than likely a problem with the SS version of Nexus - else it might be a Nexus compatibility issue with the KB itself.
I haven't had time to do any more playing with the tablet - Wife's birthday, but I'll retest once I know more. Should probably make a new thread however....

Well, that's verified. :good: Although on the plus side, I did have a completely problem free rollback to 14.3.1.0, got twrp installed, and then cycled through a couple of the roms available looking for one that worked with the KB. Again, much thanks for all the assistance - including the assistance you lent to another user in the main thread - it helped immensely with getting twrp working on the first attempt. :victory:
Native Nexus - no go. It had the same issue. Eventually found it, but never recognized any key strokes. :crying:
Swapped to CM11 and at first it appeared to not work either (more on this), as the rom never got past the boot stage, so I bootloaded and realized I made an error (forgot to mount). Then the rom loaded but everything crashed on opening (rebooted again, wiped and reinstalled) now everything worked but the KB - I'll come back to this one.
Was about to try magic beans when I read something about the KB being "finicky" - so I swapped back to native nexus and played with the BT a bit. after 20 minutes of trying it never synced up, so I went back to CM11.
Turns out it does actually recognize it. You need to turn the KB on, then press its BT pair button, and then have the system search for new BT devices (in that order). It still has an issue where certain apps like titanium backup (or anything else that makes root calls) cause the system's BT to drop the KB - but it does find it and it works just fine 90% of the time. And when it does drop, it can be reset pretty easily in settings by removing the pairing and going through those steps again. You'll also have to do this every time the system is first turned on and you want to use it. A bit aggravating, but better than not having it any functionality or needing to swap back to FireOS.
Plus it appears that CM11 works just slightly better than nexus for the apps I tend to use anyway - so that's another bonus.

Thanks for posting your BT findings with various HDX roms (below). Helpful to others who may be experiencing similar issues. I agree Nexus (based on Jellybean) is getting a bit long in the tooth. I stick with it given overall stability for the apps and and devices that I use including a AmazonBasics keyboard which pairs fine. I have been monitoring the HDX CM11/12 threads and will likely move there as the few remaining issues of concern to me are hammered out. Been running CM11 on another device (HD) for 15+ months; great rom that brought new life to an aging device.
Hey guys ive got a hdx 7' RUNNING FIRE OS 3.2.4 everything i have been reading is saying that this version is somewhat unique in that there are a few roms availible mostly from safestrapp but most are not, twrp requires 3.2.3 and earlier as well as the bootloader unlock procedure. Can anyone point me in the direction on how to downgrade to one of the earlier versions. Currently i am rooted, ota disabled via: hdxtookit, i had safestrapp and a asop rom installed but was getting google play services stopped working error messages and restored to factory because i havent used the kindle in a year. Anyways i'm looking to get back into it and got cm 12.1 on my sgs3 and wanted to get something similar but keep runninginto problems with my version fire os. So just need a quick link to a roll back procedure in english and i should be able to do the rest from unlock - twrp - roms etc. I've been searching off and on the past few weeks but do not find anything definitive so i decided to finally ask to get an answer thanks for any and all help.

So basicaly for unlock BL and real TWRP you need have FW between x.3.1.0 and x.3.2.3:
Depending on your computer skills rollback can be achieved easy (or not).
Guide in english? Here, but you must mess with build.prop and on hdx especialy its really dangerous procedure - if you made simple mistake, it could be your last with that device and deadly for it for sure.
Sorry, I will not guide you through the process, if you feel you are lost, you can ask davey126 for help, but he answered this type of question soo many times . . . you can try read his posts before you ask him, there is high posibility he answered it somewhere...

@jeryll is spot on. There are a ton of helpful posts from a variety of authors that could get you started. This one comes to mind although there are many others. Lots of folks here are happy to answer targeted questions but you have to do your homework first. Read (and read some more), go slow, stop and post a question if unsure, don't take chances. Good luck.
Random thoughts:
- I strongly encourage upgrading to 13.3.2.5 or 13.3.2.6 prior to rolling back to 13.3.1.0. Lower risk and clears out 'crud' that could ruin your day.
- Use HDX toolkit to block/unblock OTA. Don't mess with any other technique; bad day follows.
- Once OTA is unblocked stay off WiFi. Period. Do transfer/installs via tether. Belt-and-suspenders types engage airplane mode and delete existing WiFi profiles too.
- Double check every action before executing. Stop and ask questions if unsure. Juggling babies is safer than taking a wrong turn (ok ... maybe that's a bit extreme).
- Many guides suggest bootloader unlocking before installing TWRP recovery. My comfort meter goes the opposite way. Your call. There are decent arguments for both approaches.

How can I upgrade to 3.2.5 or 6. I believe I blocked ota it's been so lo.g ago I searched.for.the files and didn't see them anywhere so I assume it's still active even after factory restoration. And it's possible to twrp without unlocked boot loader? I didn't know that. What are the pros and cons. I'm not a dev so I went need to play around with much just want to rid of fire os and use a cm or nexus. If I can do that safety id LOVE that but still willing to try the adk route. Locate HDX toolkit in the Android Development thread and try to remove the OTA block that way. Keep WiFi off or you might receive an unwanted update.
Although not recommended twrp can be installed with a locked bootloader.
Travelling this week so can't get into more detail. Suggest you keep reading. Don't do stuff unless you are absolutely confident in your skills, knowledge, risks and expected outcome(s). Post questions. Many folks willing to help if you have done your homework. Sorry for brevity ...
Yes, be ESPECIALLY careful with build.prop. I learned this the hard way. They is nothing like Odin for Samsung that can save you.

Nice find! I had seen that post (long ago) but the significance never set in for Safestrap v3 users with FireOS xx.3.2.4 in the stock slot. Even if not rocking SS it is probably easier (and definitely a lot safer) to install SS vs rolling up just to roll back or messing with build.prop.
The OTA block could still be a problem as the @ggow's procedure still involves Amazon's native update mechanism.
Edit: Disregard OTA comment as modified 3.2.4 goes on first and should restore OTA capability (more importantly the ability to detect and process FireOS bin files in the appropriate location).
I upgraded from 13.3.2.4 to 13.3.2.5 and edited build.prop, so now my version shows 13.3.0.9. I downloaded 13.3.1.0 rom from Amazon server. When updating I always received the following error message "Unable to complete update because the update file is not valid. Please try downloading the file again" (I tried downloading 13.3.1.0 at least 5 times, but none of the downloaded file works). I suspect that something goes wrong with the rom file on Amazon server.
Anybody can help direct me to a non-amazon site or upload your working file to somewhere I can download from?
Thank you very much.

AFAIK after upgrading to x.3.2.5(or 6) you cant use downgrading via editing build.prop anymore (thanks to Amazon), check this thread for more info.

AFAIK after upgrading to x.3.2.5(or 6) you cant use downgrading via editing build.prop anymore (thanks to Amazon), check this thread for more info.

Assuming you are on 13.3.2.4 (must be that version) you need Safestrap v3.75 b02 for Thor (here). See Safestrap OP for additional information on installing/configuring Safestrap. Or follow part 1-2 of this guide. You do not need to create secondary slots as you will be overwriting FireOS in the Stock ROM Slot. This obviously dangerous. If something goes wrong you could be left with an unbootable device. Make a backup of your current environment from Safestrap recovery before flashing the rollback file. Note rolling back to 3.1.0 is a two step process. Be sure you understand these instructions and have the correct files. Ask questions if unsure.
After you have successfully rolled back to 3.1.0 you should uninstall safestrap before flashing native twrp, bumping your bootloader to 3.2.3 and then unlocking. Alternatively, you can work on bootloader unlocking first while Safestrap is installed which will offer more robust recovery capabilities should something go wrong in subsequent steps.

You can grab stock images here. Be absolutely certain you snag the correct one for your device. Verify md5=c49c0363de4d8dfa5c87c1bdb88aa2ba with ES FIle Explorer (long click the file and select 'properties' from the 'more' menu). Note you will loose root and OTA blocking. Be sure to stay off wifi. Use HDX Toolkit (requires usb tether to Windows PC) to root 3.1.0 and reblock OTA if needed.
I got this 13 inch tablet for displaying music PDF files.
It's got KitKat 4.4, and there's apparently no intention to update this from the manufacturer.
I'd like to run igigbook, but that app requires 5.0+. So I figure I can root this, then do the cm12 ...?
I've looked on compatible devices lists and can't find this device.
Anybody got a link or maybe just some advice?
Thx

I own one of these.
I found Kingo Root successfully roots it.
Unfortunately, no CM has been built for it.... yet. I plan to fix this.
Fair warning, though: do NOT remove anything child-mode-related yet, unless you have a backup of the system partition. It's basically an AOSP ROM, but they've tweakedwith the SYSTEMUI enough that straight-up removing it causes crach loops.
It's got an RK3188 chip, for the curious. Opened it to verify.

Great.
Ive learned the hard way! lol
Bit too late for me now, but i had a similar tab from smart telecom and i cant find any firmware for it, i rooted with kingroot and after removing all the child mode and disney crap, im having the same thing.
Ive started a thread, but im hoping i can find a patched firmware without all the bloatware and a newer android build if possible.
HI - Just came across this thread, pity I hadn't seen it earlier - I had/have rooted with King Root, which worked fine. Then set about deleting all the child-mode-related apps. Now I'm stuck with receiving "Unfortunately, the process com.android.systemui has stopped" nothing seems to fix it. Do you know where I might find the original ROM that I can restore, can't find anything on the manfactures website..
Any help, really appreciated.
Thanks
Wayne

Hi Wayne,
I contacted the supplier who was going to contact the manufacturer, still have not found anything.
Someone else started a thread some time back and did the same thing as us.
I think someone was going to create a ROM for me, i will direct them to this thread.
Thanks for the update.
I had some success last night in resolving my issues with "com.android.systemui" - I managed to get into play store and reinstalled "Net Nanny for Android" as soon as the install had completed the error message went away and hasn't returned. The other "Kids" apps that I had deleted have not reinstalled, appears Net Nanny must have removed/broken something when I deleted it.
Would be still good to get a copy of the original rom for next time, better still to get an upgrade from 4.4.4 to something a little newer at least.
Anyway hoe that help to get you going again.
Wayne
I am ordering one of these now. Let me know if there's anything I can do to try to help in terms of getting a copy of the ROM. (I haven't done android development before, but I am a software engineer so I am willing to give anything a shot)

Let me know how you get on, as I am still after a ROM image if i can find one.
Going to start researching all the possible ways to get a ROM image (in addition to just asking the manufacturer). I will first do a search, and then maybe post in the forums somewhere, but I am starting here:
http://www.theandroidhow.com/2014/06/how-to-dump-backup-any-android-rom.html
Did some research, and actually found that the androidhow article I linked in my last post was the most relevant. I followed the romdump script process and believe I have the rom image files.
The question becomes, are the image files most usable in their current form, or as flashable images?
Has there been any developments in this, or anything close to a ROM or even an update?

Not that im aware of, i just did what someone else suggested here and reinstalled netnanny off the app store.
At least its working again, but not terrific.
Oh, well I didn't have that problem. The guy I bought this streamachine off of already had it rooted and everything, i was just wondering if anything had been developed...4.4.4 is quite a bit outdated, and limited.
Clay,
Can you upload that ROM image that you made? I bought another ST13 and while I can get it into recovery mode, it still won't boot even after a factory data reset. My plan is to try recovering from the sdcard before I assume that what I have is a collection of spare parts.
My two others aren't rooted, and since we need them tonight, I don't dare mess with them right now.
Thanks,
Paul
can I get a copy?
I rooted my ST13 and now I'm having bluetooth problems. I'd like to restore back to the stock ROM. Can I have a copy of yours? Does it work?
THANKS!

I am also interested in this thread, anyone know about the bootloader?
???
So still no DISK IMAGE or ROM? I successfully rooted St1316 but can't connect to wifi. I left natnanny alone, but it now doesn't connect to ANY wifi networks. Tries then switches to either "saved" or "disabled". I can push some apps to the device via bluetooth file transfer app but don't know what's missing. Could this be a permission issue? I'm lost and stressed. Tried factory wipe. No luck. Open to suggestions. Help guys. This thing kinda sucked before I lost wifi. Now it's just a glorified digital photo frame that plays sound WAY too softly.
