where to start? (rooting) - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i have the d6503 with android 4.4.4 build no. 23.0.1.a.0.167 , there are many tutorials but i fear from bricking my device....what is the easiest most noob friendly way to root the z2 (link please?) and can it be done without downgrading ?

Yes. It can. You have to install some recovery (like cwm) and then just flash a supersu package. Installing recovery is being best done, when your bootloader is unlocked, as doomkernel has already custom recovery installed.
If you want to unlock your bootloader follow official Sony instructions.
You will also need some flashtool to flash your first custom kernel.

essential rooting questions (xperia phone noob)

ok guys well im on stock 4.4.4 and i just unlocked the bootloader. Anyway to obtain root or flash custom roms? i have read through both general and question sections but cant pinpoint an answer. i see most roms need unlocked bootloader which is fine and i see there is a dual recovery for locked and unlocked bootloaders but would i just need that and flash that without root and i can start flashing roms? sorry if these questions sound idiotic, i can assure you i am no noob doing these things as i came from the htc m8 and this is my first xperia device and flashing and rooting and unlocking bootloader was definitely a new process slightly with this phone. Again i have already unlocked bootloader which took some time but went through thanks
Or you could flash a custom kernel, doomlords for stock or m5 for cm based via adb then flash the rom you want, obviously if you flash the cm kernel a stock rom won't boot but you'll still be able to access recovery to flash a custom rom

[Q] Xperia Z2 4.4.4: Root WITHOUT Unlocked Bootloader.

Is there a way to root my Xperia Z2 (4.4.4) without unlock its bootloader?
Or else better, is there a way to back-up the bootloader before the unlock?
I ask because I want to root it without set a custom Rom.
Thanks in advance.
There is. You've got to downgrade to for example 4.4.2, root your phone, create a pre-rooted version of 4.4.4 and then flash that. There is a much more detailed guide around here, so I recommend that you check that out
To back up your ta partition you will need root first.
In stead of creating a rooted rom you can also find some prerooted here in the development forum.
-Use flashtool to downgrade to 4.4.2
-Root and install recovery with one of the available root methods (towelroot for example)
-Use recovery to flash a rooted 4.4.4 zip, recovery (again) and SU (again)
-Reboot
-Test network connection, if 4g is not working, use flashtool to flash a local 4.4.4 baseband
That's all.
I heard that for rooting it's required to have unlocked bootloader. Is that true?
(I have seen the root guide in forum, but I don't think that it mentions the bootloader)
My problem is that I want to upgrade the phone without errors (when sony has updates). I say that because a friend of mine has a rooted Nexus 5 with unlocked bootloader and he can't install the last update. It gives him a bootloop and returns to the previous. This is something I don't want.
Thanks in advance.
Unlucking is not needed.
Official updates should work if you're on a 100% stock rom, but updates are generally available as flashable rooted zip, here in the forums, long before you get an official update available from Sony.
So that should be no problem.
Biggest issue here that people dont search howto root on locked bl, that is possible, search and read then you will have it, example like the installations steps of a modded stock rom

[Q] Installing a custom rom

Hi,
I just want to install a custom rom for my z2 but i'm having a little bit of trouble figuring out how to install it.
I was interested in installing the resurrection remix rom found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/development/rom-resurrection-remix-t3028260
I'm currently on the official 5.0.2 version of android. I upgraded from 4.4.4 to 5.0.2 through Xperiafirm.
As far as I understand you need to have both root, an unlocked bootloader and a custom recovery to install a custom rom. NOTE: I have met none of these requirements.
My problem is I cant find a way to root my z2 on 5.0.2 or unlock the bootloader for that matter.
From what I gather most people upgraded from 4.4.2/4.4.4 using a rooted z2 to a 5.0.2 pre-rooted rom to keep there root permissions.
Does this mean I'll have to downgrade back to 4.4.2 or 4.4.4 and then do one of the easy root processes then flash the custom rom?
Or is there an easy way to root and unlock my bootloader on my z2 on 5.0.2 so I can flash the custom rom?
Thanks in advance for the help guys.

Since you haven't rooted Lollipop theres no easy root method.
1. Use flashtool and flash any 4.4.2 (17.1.2.A.0.314) from here
2. Then root and install recovery in one step using this guide :
+Make sure you have USB debugging turned ON and plug the phone to your computer.
+Download Z2-lockeddualrecovery[VERSION]-BETA.installer.zip from http://nut.xperia-files.com/?+Download=qh1p4ekeofo9krfbu6maic2np5&randomizer=_mc6cojzeq
+Unpack at C: or somewhere you will remember!
+Navigate to the resulting directory and look for install.bat, double click it to run;
+Select "Installation on Unrooted rom....." option
+Your phone WILL reboot when installation has completed and it will go into the default recovery for the first boot.
+Reboot to system from recovery to allow the installer to clean up after installation (it is safe to skip this step).
3. Once you have recovery installed you will hve to unlock the bootloader. Since unlocking the boot loader will remove your DRM keys you have to back them up first. Use this guide to backup DRM keys and then unlock the bootloader using this (read the whole forum carefully).
4. Since you have unloacked the boot loader you an proceed to flash and rom according to the instructions through the recovery.

How to root Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact SGP611

Hi
Could somebody guide me, because I'm a little confuse looking through the forum.
I want to upgrade my tablet with custom ROM (CM 12 Nightly ROM).
My tablet has unlocked bootloader; build nr: 23.0.1.A.0.167, and kernel version: 3.4.0-perf-gd4d661a
I’d like to know, how to root my tablet;
How To Install A Custom Recovery;
How to flash CM 12 Nightly ROM.
Could anybody show me the links where can I find all this solution.
Since your bootloader is unlocked flash the advanced stock kernel and flash advanced stock kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=57192065
You can flash root script and dual recovery to have an updated recovery. Then flash cm 12.

I also want to root my SGP611, but I don't need a custom ROM. How can I achieve this?
And should I leave my bootloader locked or not? Because after reading some threads here, I have the feeling that either you
1. Flash rootable system image; then root via giefrootv then backup ta; then flash back original firmware; then unlock via Sony's official method; then somehow some more confusing steps to gain root
Or
2. I skip unlocking bootloader (DMR keys unharmed) , but what should I do to gain root access? Does giefroot (exploit) work with Kk (4.4.4)? Didn't somebody say that the exploit is already patched? And what about the xdualrecovery thing? It didn't mention that it's compatible with SGP611...

Problem with Z2 to change rom.

Hi guys i have the xperia Z2 D6543 with a stock 5.1.1 23.4.A.1.232 with locked bootloader and without root .
I want to root and change my rom for one of this two that i found on the xda forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/development/rom-existenz-y-1-0-0-preparing-thread-t3113649
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/general/miui-7-sony-z2-relesed-t3188688
But i don't know what i really need to do, i was looking on the internet and i found many posts saiyng that i need to downgrade my rom to 5.0.2 and root than i should upgrade it using flashtool.
If that is a easiest way to root and change my rom that you guys can show me i would be pleasuread.
Thank you!
Download the prerooted firmware you want to use. Then downgrade to 4.4.2, build number 314. Then install the XZDR. That will give you a fully functional recovery. Get into TWRP (volume -) and install the prerooted firmware and reboot. The phone will reboot with full root and recovery.
There is another way but still need a downgrade to 5.0.2, use a rooting tool to install the recovery; if you downgrade to 4.4.2 is just one step.
