My Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact SGP 621 is now rooted with lollipop 5.0.2
1) First I flashed the normal Lollipop firmware using the flashtool which is there in one of the threads in Sony xperia Z3 tablet compact android development section
2) Then I checked in the dialer if bootloader can be unlocked. It said yes. Bootloader was then unlocked using the Sony website where you get the Sony unlock code in your email.
3) Then I followed this thread to http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-...ment/advanced-stock-kernel-twrp-root-t2959720 to root my Sony Xperia Z3 tablet compact.
4) I did have few hiccups in the step 3 as I was new to Sony devices. Previously I was using Samsung devices (tablet and phones) but I managed to get the TWRP installed at this point.
5) Then I flashed the prerooted Zip file from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-...-sgp621-lollipop-23-1-0-690-noba-ftf-t3058400
6) I did backup TA keys once my device was rooted. Since I read in many threads that backing up TA keys required root.
Thats it. Once I was finished with step 5. Tablet got rebooted and I had SuperSu installed with awesome lollipop firmware on my Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet compact.
Now I am a very happy and satisfied man since then. I am getting excellent battery life of above 10 hours in 4 days.
Since I was new to Sony devices I had to struggle a bit but it was worth the hardwork. Lollipop is extremely smooth and battery life is amazing.
Hope you find this information useful. If you need screenshots please let me know I will share it in my next post.
Cheers!
That's great, but it look like complex...., can you write the steps in detail?
Detailed procedure I followed to root my Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet SGP 621 (lollipop)
Disclaimer: "Before you do any thing please follow this thread & Backup your TA key first using this thread " or you will lose DRM keys forever.
Here is what I did. Sorry for making it so long.
MY PC - Windows 7 x64 SP1
My Device - Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.
1) Install the flashtool on your PC. The one which I used was flashtool-0.9.18.5-windows.exe file.
Once downloaded install the flashtool to lets say C:\Flashtool.
In that folder go to "drivers" folder and install the file.
This is extremely important.
Please refer to the "driver installation 1.jpeg" and "driver installation 2.jpeg" in the attachments below on what to select during installation.
Once you select those three options hit "install".
Now you have flashtool installed on your PC.
Go to "Start" -> type " Flash and you will have two options if you are having 64bit windows OS. Select "Flashtool 64".
For better understanding please check the "Flashtool 64.jpeg" in the below attachments.
When you open flashtool software it will ask you to move the firmware ftf file which is there in C:\Flashtool\firmwares to C:\Users\abcd\.flashTool\firmwares
abcd is my username in the PC I used.So you have to navigate to similar path in your PC.
In the same location paste your Sony lollipop firmware SGP621_23.1.A.0.690_NOBA.ftf
flashtool is ready for use.
2) On your Sony xperia z3 tablet. Go to Settings -> Developer settings -> Check USB debugging and unknown sources.
Switch off the device.
Now press "volume down" and connect the Sony Xperia Z3 tablet to your PC.
Select the SGP621_23.1.A.0.690_NOBA.ftf in the flashtool and flash it.
This might take roughly 5 to 10 minutes but it will complete for sure.
Reboot the device and go inside the Settings -> Developer settings -> Check USB debugging and unknown sources.
3) Unlocking bootloader (Do this step ONLY if you have backed up your TA keys or Do NOT attempt this)
Open the phone dialer on Sony Xperia Z3 tablet and type *#*#7378423#*#* .
Go to Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status.
It should say bootloader unlock allowed: yes
You will need IMEI number of your Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.
Either you can check on your Box or type *#06# and you will get your IMEI number.
Write this down somewhere.
Go to this site http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/unlock-yourboot-loader/ and follow the instructions to get your unique unlock code.
Once you go through each and every step in that sonymobile site you will get the code and further instructions in your email.
For better understanding please check the jpeg attachments "bootloader unlock step 3" and "bootloader unlock step 4" below.
Now Power off your Sony Xperia Z3 tablet compact and then press "volume up".
Connect the tablet to PC.
To proceed further you will need adb. Click here to download adb.
Install the adb setup on your PC.
Go to the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot
Press "shift" button and right click in the empty space inside that folder.
You will get the option "Open Command Window here"
Select that option.
Now type the below commands (these commands are there in the bootloader unlock step 3.jpeg and bootloader unlock step 4.jpeg" below in attachments)
fastboot devices
fastboot i 0x0fce oem unlock <your unlock code>
Thats it. Your bootloader should be unlocked now.
Reboot the device and go inside the Settings -> Developer settings -> Check USB debugging and unknown sources.
3) Installation of TWRP and Root.
You need .img file for this.
From this thread I downloaded the .img
File name will be Z3TC-stock-twrp.img.
Just rename this file as boot.img and place it in C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot
Power off your Sony Xperia Z3 tablet compact and then press "volume up".
Connect your tablet to PC.
Go to the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot
Press "shift" button and right click in the empty space inside that folder.
You will get the option "Open Command Window here"
Type the below commands one after the other.
fastboot devices
fastboot flash boot boot.img
it should say "finished". check the "successful bootimg commands.jpeg " in below attachments.
Reboot the device.
Download the Pre-rooted flashable Zip from here
Download the SuperSu from here
Copy the Prerooted flashable zip and SuperSU to your SD card.
Switch off the Tablet.
Go to recovery by pressing "power" & volume up and down alternatively.
You will now enter TWRP.
Install the SuperSU zip file.
Then Install the Pre-rooted flashable zip file.
Reboot and you are done!
You will now have working Root, TWRP and awesome Lollipop firmware on your beautiful Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.
4) Final step Backup TA keys.
After rebooting the device.
Once it enters the homescreen.
Go inside the Settings -> Developer settings -> Check USB debugging and unknown sources.
Connect the Tablet to PC
Download the backup TA software from here
Extract it on your PC.
Double click on the Backtup-TA.bat
It will identify your device.
Just back up your DRM keys from the options on your screen.
I read online and in some threads in XDA that backup TA software needs the device to be rooted and that is why I kept this step in the end.
I completely agree if you guys find the above procedure tedious.
After going through many threads and websites this is how the steps panned out.
This is the procedure that worked for me in the end.
I did have few hiccups and bootloop as well. Then I just kept it flashmode and re-flashed the lollipop ftf file using flashtool with "wipe data" option checked.
That solved the problem.
Coming from Samsung devices I had to find out what was fastboot mode, flash mode, how to enter recovery and how to use flashtool. It was all new to me.
But I didn't give up and went through the grind.
Result? Super Sony Xperia Z3 Compact SGP 621 with Root on Lollipop firmware with Excellent battery life.
Thanks to all the brilliant developers on this site who in various threads explained various aspects of rooting. It is because of them I was able to put everything together.
Please find all the screenshots in the attachments below.
Hope you find this information useful.
Thank you
Cheers!
I do not understand the procedure.
If you unlock the bootloader (step 3) you lose the keys drm. The backup of the partition TA must do so before unlocking the bootloader.
You have verified that have intact the drm keys?

Hi,
Yes, I am able to login to PSN network after rooting with the above steps.
Unfortunately, I do not have PS4 to check the connection.

Thank you. I followed your steps and everything works fine. I can connect to PS4 remotely using LTE without any problem.
But is it possible to get a working TWRP? I can't get into recovery mode after rooting and flash the device. Any solution? I need to flash xposed via TWRP...Thanks.

Hi,
In order to get working TWRP you can try repeating the step 3 and reflash the .img file from that step. I am hopeful that doing this will work.
Don't forget to check to check the USB debugging AND unknown sources in security options.
To enter recovery you need to keep holding the "power" and keep pressing "volume" up and down alternatively for a little while say 10 to 15 seconds (max).
It will enter the TWRP for sure.
Once you do enter TWRP just "wipe cache" & " wipe dalvich cache" once.
Cheers!
TA partition backup
i am pretty sure u need root on a locked bootloader before backing up ur TA keys.
once unlocked,ur TA keys are gone.no amt of backups, reflash official firmware or any other magic shows will recover those keys.
u can check if ur TA keys are intact by keying in*#*#7378423#*#* select service tests>security and look out for for the screenshot below.i have compared an unrooted and rooted with TA backed up and am very sure this is what u shld have if u have backed up TA keys correctly and restored them. Any errors would mean ur TA keys are screwed.

Mate, I suggest you remove/amend/add disclaimer to your post on how you root and backup your TA.
It is well known and proven in xda for sony devices, you CANNOT unlock your bootloader to backup TA keys. Once unlock, your TA keys are GONE and there is no way you can recover them.
that is why the root exploit was found on the z3 compact and we are able to root with a LOCKED bootloader to backup TA keys BEFORE unlocking and flash like no tomorrow.
Please do all the noobs a favor and make the changes before someone here starts multiple threads on recovering TA keys or warranty related questions.
It didn't work to reflash TWRP, it will just get into boot loop unless flash the rom again. The the previous TWRP was gone.
Can you verify that you can enter TWRP after flashing the rom? Look likes it is impossible for now.

Ok, I found out the correct solution to get TWRP works on rooted lollipop Z3TC.
Follow the other XZDualrecovery tread and install the XZDualRecovery. Then you can boot into TWRP by using volume Down.
You can also install Xposed framework via TWRP and Xposed installer via regular apk install.
I did get bootloop by installing xposed installer. Just uninstall Xposed framwork from TWRP then it will back to normal. Hope this helps.

Xposed now works with the latest XZrecovery, if you get bootloop try clearing the art cache and it will solve the problem.

ROOTING
Android rooting is the process of allowing users of smartphones, tablets, and other devices running the Android mobile operating system to attain privileged control (known as "root access") within Android's subsystem.
As Android was derived from the Linux kernel, rooting an Android device is similar in practice to accessing administrative permissions on Linux.
In simple words you are allowed to change android system yourself according to your need like deleting apps, installing system apps, installing CWM recovery etc..
STEPS:
Check your phone software/firmware number by going to settings>about phone>build number
If you are on any GB firmware use flashtool guide in second post
If you are on ICS firmware (6.1.B.0.544 or 6.1.B.0.550 or 6.1.B.0.559) ,then
Download Rooting tool by Bin4ry from here
Extract it using 7zip/Winrar etc.
Double click the RunMe.bat and select 1. i.e normal phone option
Backup and restore app will open
Select RootMe.tar and click on restore
Follow instructions and bongo you are rooted :victory:
If you are on ICS firmware version (6.1.1.B.1.54 or 6.1.1.B.1.75), then
Download flashtool from official flashtool website
Install it on your PC using onscreen instructions. It will create a folder "Flashtool" in your drive(C\Flastool)
Now go to C\Flastool\drivers\flastool-drivers.exe and click on it and install it after marking/checking "xperia p,xperia u,xperia sola drivers" which is below there on the list
Download the file from here-
Now copy the files "Xperia P LT22_6.1.1.B.1.54_Kernel.ftf" , "Xperia P LT22_6.1.B.0.599_Kernel.ftf" and "Xperia P LT22_6.1.1.B.0.75_Kernel.ft and paste them in "C\Flastool\Firmwares" in PC.
Now keep "Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry-XP" folder in the dekstop as it is.
Now for your SXP.Go to 'settings>developer options>USB Debugging">'mark/check this option
Open flashtool from PC.
Click on the "flash" icon of the flashtool which is on the left side of the iconic tab(below the 'file' option-it's like a lightning sign).a window will be opened Mode Selector.Check "FlashMode" and press "ok" button.
You will see "Xperia P LT22 version 6.1.B.0.599" on the options.single click on that .uncheck "exclude kernel" (on the right side) and check "no final verification" and press the "ok" button.
A window will be opened saying to connect your device.switch off your phone for 30 secs.now connect the USB cable to PC(not on your device).now press down the vol.down button and hold it while connecting the USB to your phone.[now the flashtool will start flashing.but if you are doing for the first time sometimes the drivers are not able to detect the drivers of your phone and the phone starts charging in a normal way instead of flashing.don't worry.Disconnect the USB from phone only.wait for 10-20 secs.repeat from step v again and then connect your device while pressing vol.down button.the flashtool will detect your device and start flashing.)
You will be able to see percentage below.after it is finished it will be written there.disconnect USB cable from your phone only after watching it.
Restart your phone.
Go to your dekstop on PC.open the "Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry-XP" folder.
Click on "RunMe.bat" .a commend promt window will open on your PC.
now write only "1" (Normal Phone) in the "Make a choice" section
it should be like this.
Make a choice : 1 [Hit enter then]
It will promt to connect your device in debugging mode.Connect the USB to your phone with debugging mode turned on.now the Command Promt Window will do its work and it will say to you to open your "backup and restore" app.
Get your phone in your hand.open "app drawer>back up & restore" and hit the "restore" button.
The phone will be restarted in a while.
now you will see "super user" or "superSU" app on your app drawer.that means your phone is ROOTED successfully.
Restart your device again.(just for being safe)
Phone is rooted but the kernel is of previous version 6.1.B.0.599.So we have to reflash "6.1.1.B.1.54_Kernel.ftf" or 6.1.1.B.1.75_Kernel.ftf to the phone using Flashtool again.
Open flastool.watch step v and do the same.but select the "Xperia P LT22 version 6.1.1.B.1.54" or "6.1.1.B.1.75_Kernel.ftf"option instead of the previous ".599".now check and uncheck as the same before and flash your device pressing "ok" button.
Disconnect the phone.FINISHED.
Enjoy Rooting

Unlocking bootloader
Unlocking your bootloader allows you to flash a custom kernel i.e. kernel made by some developer rather than the stock SONY kernel.
Flashing custom kernels allows you to flash CUSTOM ROMS like Cyanogenmod ROMS which have very vast features and user experience with imporoved performance, features and battery life.
Note: Unlocking Bootloader of Xperia P Will Void It’s Warranty Provided By The Manufacturer (Warranty Can Be Retained By Relocking The Same).
But DRM keys are lost forever if you unlock your bootloader i.e. some apps like TrackID, download mucis info in walkman app etc. doesn't work and also you would not get any OTA firmware update after you unlock your bootloader and also if you relock afterward
STEPS:
Firstly Get & Note Down IMEI Code of Your Device. It can be Obtained by Dialing *#06#in Phone Dialer.
Charge Your Phone upto 60% Battery Level So As To Ensure That It Doesn’t Turn Off During The Process of Bootloader Unlocking.
Temporarily Disable Your PC’s Antivirus Software As This Might Interrupt The Process.
By Assuming That You’ve Followed The Essential Steps Mentioned Above, You Can Now Move To The Further Part Of The Article Where Will Check on How To Unlock Bootloader of Xperia P.

Did you install the fastboot, flashmode and xperia drivers from the drivers folder in the flashtool installation location?
If yes, then make sure you release the volume up key as soon as the led glows blue.

Hello I'm stock rom 6.1.1.B.1.54 locked bootloader having some things unclear about this:
1. Can I flash custom ROMs wth locked bootloader? If not, what happens if I try to? Do I brickwall my phone? Is it recoverable?
2. Can I still flash other stock ROM (for example .75) with locked bootloader?
3. What's the difference between flashing custom ROM via CWM and via Flashtool?
4. Do I always before flashing new ROM have to clear data? Do this wipe all installed apps and settings?
5. If flashing new rom wipes everything, will I be able to restore all apps&settings from full Titanium backup?

Sorry for late reply
1. It depends upon the ROM you flashing.. Some ROMS need custom kernel i.e bootloader unlocked and some can run on stock kernel.. So check the ROM requirements before you flash it... If u flash ROM that requires unlocked bootloader and you flash it on locked bootloader you will end in a bootloop
2. Stock ROMS (stock based ROMS) can be flashed on locked bootloader
3.Flashtool will flash Orignal firmware (Stock firmware from sony) i.e ftf file... And through CWM you can flash ROMS i.e *.zip files
4. Yes it is recommended to clear data (it will delete all apps and settings)... But also check ROM installation procedure some may not require to clear data. If you are flashing stock firmware (ftf file) using flashtool you can uncheck wipe data to preserve you data.
5. Yes you can use titanium backup to backup and restore apps anytime on any ROM or firmware
Great, thanks for explaining

Go to C:/Flashtool/Drivers and install drivers for Xperia P as well as flashmode drivers (second last option)... It should work
Hello guys, My XZU C6802 just got bricked today, in attempt to install Cyanogenmod.
I was rooted, I had dual recovery and I guess I installed CM10.2 because it was the most stable one out now, although, I didn't think and or realize that I can't go from a 4.4.4 to 4.3 on the 10.2..... I'm an idiot.
However, I've tried every method online to try and boot the phone up but it just won't turn on....
I've left it in charge for hours on end, 6-7 Hours and no point... Sony Support that I called told me to, Connect a wall charger to it, then at the same time hold power button and top volume button and if it vibrated 3 times that means the hardware is fine and the phone is responding.... in which mine did that and he told me to leave it in charge and to try and turn it on after a few hours.... but that didn't work either. It's connected to the charger but it's just blinking red LED light all the time constantly.
I can put it in boot loader mode only, by connecting the usb and holding VOLUP button at the same time as plugging in the usb.
I don't know what to do and I really need my phone, so I hope someone can help me!
I don't know if its gone now or if it's worth anything, should I sell it, keep it? I love the phone but if this is how it's going to be for a while or always at this point, Might as well try and sell it cheap and get another Samsung maybe.
I hope I don't have too. Please help guys!
Thank you XDA!
Did you try flashing stock ftf? That should help.
Hold volume down button while plugging in the usb cable to your pc, the led might go green (if i remember right), meaning you booted into flashmode correctly,
then download the flashtool from the internet and ftf from the forum and flash it off.
You should have it working
br
s
If you can get to the bootloader then just fastboot flash the approprate(IE the offical version that was on your before you borked it. if I recall correctly its probably listed in the bootloader) kernel, fota, and system image files. I'm sure there is a thread here that has the files. As an aside if you can get to the bootloader, you are not bricked, you're fine man/woman, listen to The Eagles on this one.
Did you unlock the boot loader at all?
anyway to recover:
download flashtool (http://flashtool.net)
download a FTF (see FTF thread in dev section)
start flashtool
select flashmode
select FTF from above
select start/flash/etc (cant remember the wording)
wait for the graphic to say connect phone
Hold vol. down key while connecting phone - LED will flash (blue?) for about 1/2 a second then turn off
(if the above does't work press the red reset button beside the SD card slot and try again)
wait for flash to finish
disconnect phone
You could also try EMMA from Sony.
Worked ery well everytime I bricked mine

Download sony pc companion and install it. Goto update software and select & make sure your phone is off and plug it in while holding vol up or vol down to get it in flash mode. PC should recognise it after installing drivers and select the recovery option if given ( you might have to tell it to force an update or it might automatically do it). Sit or make a cuppa while waiting for it to download the sony rom. You wont re lock your bootloader just restore the sony rom. Once downloaded it should start the process, I've done it a few times and managed to recover it.
Sony PC Companion won't work, tried it a lot. I have also tried EMMA too. Doesn't work, emma says; I have a locked boot loader.

I couldn't find any FTF?? I'm new here, i'm sorry, I just didn't really find anything. I got the flattop though. Thanks for that.
Found FTF; http://forum.xda-developers.com/xpe...tf-depository-sony-firmware-releases-t2829387
Thanks blueether. I used flashboot to unlock my boatload and then phones screen turned on and then I flashed FTF and it was complete reboot and I have my Stock back. Then loaded dual recovery again and restored my tarp backup of my complete phone. its working great thanks to you.
One question I have now, since I unlocked the boot loader and then re-installed stock, does this mean I have to unlock it again to be able to install Cyanogen or it permanently stays unlocked?

I didn't mention unlocking it in the guide did I?
Now that you have unlocked it (and I assume that you dont have a TA backup) just leave it unlocked. the only point to relocking is if you have a TA backup to do it with to restore the DRM keys that you just wiped

I had the same problem.
Just unlock it via fastboot like described on the sony homepage ( http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/unlock-yourboot-loader/ ) . The only thing you can't do is checking if its possible to unlock your bootloader, so just jump this step (worked with my C6833, no warranty to work with other models fron other countries).
Then you can use EMMA without any troubles any time you brick it. At least with my device it worked.

yes you have to unlock the bootloader to run custom ROMs and kernels, but if you don't back up the TA before you unlock it you have no way to get back to a pure stock state and you lose your DRM keys - so things that rely on them no longer work.

Screencasting is one thing it breaks. The backup you made in recovery before unlocking your bootloader should relock it if restored. I have never been able to confirm if it might also restore drm keys though.

Okay thanks.
I have been trying to install recovery and root my z ultra again after a clean fresh stock restore and I can't install it.
I keep getting Towelroot error.. Tr.apk - Easyroot...
I have even downloaded the tr.apk separately and put it in the Files folder like it asks... Still.. no luck.
I am trying to install recovery on un-rooted rom then boot into recovery and flash supersu.zip.
Any easier ways? Any other ways to root and install recovery?
I have been trying many ways and I haven't gotten much luck.
Thanks.

Please help if you can! Have a backup TA section. When connecting the phone without a battery, the computer recognizes it as SEMC Flash Device. Thanks in advance. Sorry for my English.

Ah I see.
I checked the thread you sent me, I cannot hotboot it, it doesn't detect my device for some reason.
I have all ADT, ADB, FLASHMODE AND BOOTLOADER mode drivers, it has worked before.
Any suggestions any ideas? Also I was wondering, is this for 4.4.4 the doomkernal you sent or 4.4.2? Cuz there's a pic in the thread showing 4.4.2 so I just wanted to make sure!
In the thread, this was mentioned, however, I don't understand this at all, well not much anyway.

Does anyone also have any idea when 5.0 is coming to Z ultra? or if there is beta available now?

I have just successfully completed all 3 steps in the title and would like to compile the information so that more people can report more success. Many thanks and all credit to the threadstarter of this guide, the devs of the amazing Flashtool, and the dev of this newly created TOUCH version of the TWRP recovery (finally!)

Bootloader Unlock (instructions taken from this guide)
0. First check if your phone allows unlocking by dialing *#*#7378423#*#* , when Service Menu opens, go to Service Info, then Configuration; scroll down to read Rooting Status.
If "Bootloader unlocked" says yes, skip to the next section on Root.
If it says no (unlocked allowed), great, proceed on to next step.
If it says no (unlocked disallowed) or something like that, I'm sorry, unlocking won't work on your phone. Lodge a complaint with your mobile provider for locking it.
Getting the unlock code (skip to Step 5 if you already have it)
1. Go to Sony's official bootloader unlocking website.
2. Select Xperia M or M2 in the dropdown.
3. Follow all the steps (including *#06# to note your phone's IMEI number)
4. COPY the unlock code and paste and save it in a text file on your desktop.
Ensuring Flashtool recognises phone
5. Download Flashtool here and install it.
(To apply the 0.9.19.10 patch, install 0.9.19.8 and replace x10flasher.jar with the one from the patch. Default install folder is C:\Flashtool , don't change it)
6. Open Flashtool, connect your phone via USB. (Make sure USB Debugging is enabled in Developer Options). If Flashtool warns that ADB driver is not installed, go to the Sony website to download them. If Flashtool recognises phone, skip to Step 11.
7. Unzip the Sony drivers into a folder.
8. Boot into Advanced Startup on Windows and disable signed driver enforcement (I'm sorry, you have to Google this for your specific Windows installation)
9. When Windows has restarted, go to Device Manager, click on the ADB Interface item with the yellow questionmark, click Update Drivers, Search Manually, Have Disk, and then open the folder where the Sony driver inf is. select the ADB inf and install it. Warnings will pop up but install the drivers anyway. When done, the yellow questionmark will be replaced by something normal.
10. Verify that Flashtool recognises phone by connecting the USB cable when phone is on. You should see information about phone kernel and ROM version.
<Congratulations for making it this far>
Setting up Flashtool for use
11. With Flashtool open and phone connected, click on Devices in Flashtool menu > Check Drivers.
12. More information will pop up. Under ADB Devices, your phone's serial number will be stated (something like 10 digits and letters). Copy that serial number.
13. Go to %USERPROFILE%\.flashTool\mydevices .
14. Create a new folder in here and rename it to the serial number.
15. Open the serial number folder, create a new text file and rename it "ulcode.txt" (without the quotes).
16. Open the text file, paste your bootloader unlock code, save and close the file.
For step 16, as a precaution, copy and paste the serial number folder inside registeredDevices too. I didn't test which folder was being used by Flashtool for the unlock.
Actual unlocking of bootloader
17. With Flashtool open and phone connected, click on the BLU button. Follow all instructions. One involves VOL UP, the other involves VOL DOWN (for fastboot), please take note to do both, it's not deja vu.
18. When you have done so correctly, Flashtool will pop a small dialog with your IMEI and unlock code already pasted inside.
19. Take a deep breath and click unlock.
20. Check in main window that bootloader has indeed been unlocked.
21. Unplug the USB cable and boot your phone to check that everything should be normal.
CONGRATULATIONS, YOUR WARRANTY IS NOW VOID.
Installing TWRP recovery (with touch capability but NO external SD card mount yet as of 13 Nov 2015)
0. Make sure your bootloader is unlocked before proceeding.
1. The download link is from the M4 Aqua Marshmallow Site, scroll to the bottom. (XDA thread is here)
2. Download and save the recovery.img file anywhere you like.
3. Copy and paste recovery.img to C:\Flashtool\x10flasher_lib .
4. Install the recovery using fastboot using the instructions based on this website (thanks and credits to Shyam Karnani):
Flashtool comes with its own ADB interface so we don't need to install any new ones or the bloated Android SDK.
a) Open a command window inside the folder C:\Flashtool\x10flasher_lib (shift-rightclick and select "open command window here")
b) Connect phone to the computer using the USB cable.
c) type "adb reboot bootloader" (without quotes) in the command window and press enter (if asked to allow USB debugging in the phone screen, touch ok)
d) when the phone has entered fastboot, type "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" (without quotes) and enter. Check that there are no errors produced by the flashing.
e) type "fastboot reboot" and enter.
The phone now has TWRP recovery but NO ROOT.
To boot into recovery
1. Simultaneously press the Power button and Volume down until your device vibrates.
2. Quickly release the Power button, but keep pressing Volume down.
3. When you see the TWRP screen, release Volume down. You have now successfully entered recovery mode.
(Instructions from Sony Developer website)
Rooting using SuperSU
0. Check that you have flashed a custom recovery. If not, please refer to steps right above.
1. Download SuperSU from the official website.
2. Connect your phone and transfer the zip file to the INTERNAL storage (because no recovery can mount external SD card yet as of 13 Nov 2015).
3. Power off phone and boot into TWRP recovery.
(An info dialog will popup asking if you want to keep read-only for /system. I chose NOT to keep, but need someone with knowledge to explain if read-only will block rooting procedure. It will, right?)
4. Touch the Install button and scroll to find the supersu zip.
5. Install the supersu zip. When done, clearing cache/Dalvik is optional (can be done using Titanium Backup anyway once you have root).
6. Reboot system.
Enjoy your root! :good:

Of course, that's what the title says lol. I cannot vouch for the other models.
I think the instructions can be modified, like for example different serial number for different model.
I'm having problem after clicking the BLU button, I'm doing what it said "Unplug USB cable, power off, hold vol down, connect USB cable" but will have an error USB not recognized, check flashtool screen it said usb debugging is off, make sure your not in MTP, I already turn usb debugging on. I'm stuck here.
btw I disable signed driver enforcement already and installed the ADB, but still no luck
Running OS windows 10
help please, :crying: if you can make a video it may help. thanks!
Everything went well for me thanks a lot.
i'm on windows 8 64bits

Same issue with alvind27
Same issue as alvind27 has there been a fix yet.
my model is the same as yours
Works fine with my 2303
Great tutorial. Thank you so much. I forgot many things since someone has stolen my Xperia S. Root revived this phone. Android 6 + root is great future but now I am happy with that, too.
Working on my E2303. If someone has problem then he/ she has to learn more about it. Just follow steps slowly and everything is gonna be fine.
I had the same problem but also on windows 10, flashed in a windows 8 computer without any major issues.
I have a problem. Me appears seen, how can I fix?

Stuck at Bootloader Unlocking...
Hi, I have a problem here. I have the E2353 Xperia M4 Aqua and use the mac version of Flashtool
I've followed every step from checking whether or not the phone's BL can be unlocked (it is allowed) to putting all the necessary text files in the "mydevices" and "registeredDevices" folder. Problem is when I press and hold the VOL Down key and plug the USB in...nothing happens, it's just stuck there at the instructions screen while I keep holding the down volume key. I expected to see the Bootloader Unlock Wizard but it doesn't appear
Is there something I missed? What should I do?
Worked on e2363!
I managed to work on my E2363, though at the beginning I had problems and errors (when using fasboot to record TWRP.img got the error "unable to record the image").
In step 0, i got YES, but the error I mentioned persisted.
So did all the steps again (assuming in step 0 I would have gotten "no") and worked, the TWRP was recorded.

Hello all,
I have a Z2 on MM with 23.5.A.1.291 firmware. I want to root and install a custom recovery and have looked at the threads on here about it but I'm pretty confused! None of the various options seem to be up to date, or stable, or understandable.
This thread seems to be the most up-to-date, but the instructions are pretty vague, files seem to be missing, and quite a few people seem to have had problems with it.
Can anyone explain the simplest, safest way to root the Z2 on the latest firware? Or at least help me make head-nor-tail of the existing instructions...
Many thanks

Download .314 ftf (or any rootable ftf for z2)
Then search for dual recovery for Xperia z2 and download the last version
And download Xperia root kit
1. Flash the ftf file that you have downloaded
2. Root it using Xperia rootkit(usb debugging must be on)
3. Install dual recovery using your pc
Thats it now you have root and recovery
I followed the guide you linked to and everything worked perfectly! As long as all files are available, I would do this again. Be sure to follow the directions exactly and you'll be fine.
Whatever you do, DON'T try to flash Nut's Dual Recovery on MM, because you'll then be in a continuous bootloop at the Sony logo; don't ask me how I know this! ;>)

I've read through that entire thread pretty much and still haven't found clear step by step instructions :/
I've downloaded the flashtool but don't know what to do now: there is no option to 'flash' or select a file..
Surely someone out there is able to write a clear, full, step-by-step guide to root this very popular phone..?
I've rooted many different phones and installed plenty of ROMs but never found so much confusing information before!
IDIOTS GUIDE Root and TWRP
Okay, may as well do it my self...
IDIOT'S GUIDE: (for Z2 Marshmallow .291)
1. Firstly go to https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6aEcBP7FwsWUGpQdHdvaVRCQlk/view and download the .291 kernel.
2. Then download SuperSU from here.
3. Put both these files on your phone's SD card.
4. Next download the .575 kernel here.
5. Before this can be used, you need to change it from a .zip file to a .ftf file.
- Go to the file location in the file browser.
- Click on the 'View' section in the top ribbon (Win 10).
- Check 'file name extensions' in the 'show/hide' section.
- Rename the kernel file, deleting the .zip and replacing it with .ftf instead at the end.
6. Download the Recovery for MM from here.
Extract the zip file.
7. Download the correct drivers for your phone: simplest way seems to be by installing Sony PC Companion and connecting your device.
8. Download and install 'Flashtool' from here. (The 0.9.18.6 version seems to have better compatibility).
9. Install the drivers for the flash- if you are on windows 10 or 8 you will need to turn off driver signing first:
A) Press the Windows key + R together and in the ‘Run’ box type: shutdown.exe /r /o /f /t 00
- This will take you to the advanced boot menu.
– Now make the following selections to boot into the Start Up Setting Screen: Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Start Up Settings > Restart
– Then, when the machine restarts, select number 7 i.e. “Disable driver signature enforcement”. Your machine will start with Driver signing enforcement disabled until the next reboot.
B) Now you can install the Flashtool drivers.
– Windows will warn that the driver is not signed and will require you to confirm the installation.
– Once the installation is complete, reboot the machineTo install the drivers you need to go to the Flashtool install folder (e.g. C:\Flashtool) and go in to the 'drivers' folder and run the 'flashtool-drivers.exe'.
- From the menu select Flashmode drivers, Fastboot drivers, and then scroll down and select Xperia Z2 device drivers (not sure if this last one is necessary if you've done step 7 previously, but I did it and everything worked.)
- Click install, and click okay on the warning messages.
10. Enable developer options on your phone (repeatedly tap on build number in 'About phone' in settings.)
Then make sure that USB Debugging is enabled, and in 'Security' that 'Allow Unknown Sources' is enabled.
11. Back up vital data (though you shouldn't loose anything), then power your phone off with it not connected to the computer.
12. Startup Flashtool and let it update etc.
13. While holding the volume down button on your phone, connect it to your PC.
Flashtool should respond and spew out a few lines of text ending with something like 'Phone ready for flashmode operations'.
14. Click on the lightning bolt, select 'Flashmode', and then in the next window browse to the location of the .575 .ftf kernel file you made. Select it, then click 'flash' at the bottom right. There should be more lines of text hopefully showing that this is completed successfully.
15. Close Flashtool, disconnect your phone, then turn on your phone.
16. Flash the recovery: Reconnect your phone to the PC and select MSC mode.
Go to the unzipped recovery and run 'install.bat' as administrator (if that doesn't work try not as administrator).
If the window that opens up stays on 'starting daemon...' for a while check on your phone as you may need to authorize the 'unknown source' connection from the PC.
The installation should complete with a 'press any key to continue'. Your phone should then automatically reboot in to TWRP recovery.
17. Install SuperSU: Once in TWRP go to 'Install' and select the SuperSU zip (you may need to select 'storage' and choose your SD card first). Swipe to install!
18. Reinstall the .291 kernel: still in TWRP do basically the same as for SuperSU but this time with the MM .291 zip.
19. Cross your fingers and reboot!
20. All being well you are now rooted, you can check root by installing 'Root Checker' form the play store.
21. Open a beer and relax!
(22. Install Cyberian camera!)
Please give me some thanks if I have helped you!
I will post this as a new thread as well so it's easier to find.

Hi all!!
This is for all the people who managed to softbrick (or hardbrick) their Lenovo Tab 3 8' (TB3-850F) tablets!
All you will need link, at the end of the post. I don't know for how long it will be up, but you can use it for now.
By the way.... Should you find something useful here... please hit the thanks button in the end
A. Unbrick
This requires flashing a clean stock rom. You will need:
a. stock rom for the TB3-850F (Google is you friend )
b. Sp Flashtool (you can download from their official site). From there, also download the MediaTek USB VCOM drivers and Driver Auto Installer v1.1236.00 (or any latest version).
Steps:
1. Install the windows drivers you downloaded
Note : If you encounter problems installing Windows drivers in Windows 10, google how to install unsigned drivers in Win10
2. Open the folder you extracted SP Flashtool and run it as administrator.
3. Unzip the rom file you downloaded.
4. Inside the folder of your unzipped rom file, look for a file similar to XXXXXXXXXX_scatter_file.txt
5. Load this in the SP Flashtool (click downlad tab, then scatter loading, load this file in there. It should load your rom you will see some colours, etc...
The tricky part:
Assuming you have correctly installed the drivers:
1. turn off the device (well if bricked it is turned off all ready) just make sure, and in SP Flashtool click options and 'with battery'.
2. Click the green download button on SP Flashtool.
3. Hold down the Vol down key on your device and connect it to a usb port.
4. If you see a red line and continue to yellow, all is probably good! Don't let go of the vol - button until yellow line reaches 100%
B. Root and TWRP recovery
This requires that you have or download:
a. platform tools (adb and fastboot)
b. a twrp.img (image file) for the lenovo TB3-850F copied to external SD Card and platform tools folder (google is... useful )
c. latest supersu.zip (flashable) copied to an external SD CARD
d. busybox.apk
Steps:
1. Grab tablet, go to settings ---> about tablet ---> click version number 7 times to enable developer options
2. From settings again click developer options and enable OEM Unlocking and usb debugging
3. Navigate in the platform tools folder. While holding SHIFT right click and select open commandline here (or similar)
4. Connect tablet to PC and in the command line issue: adb devices
If a weird number shows up and says device on the left you are all good to continue.
5. Now on the command prompt again issue: adb reboot bootloader
Your tablet should now reboot to fastboot (big Android, laying down)
6. Issue command: fastboot oem unlock (also check tablet screen for confirmation)
Wait a little bit and reboot your tablet. (should work with holding the power key down for a little longer than 10 seconds. If not hold down volume key and power button for the same amount of time - tested and working)
**At this point it is ESSENTIAL to leave the tablet to fully boot. The bootloader unlock triggers a FACTORY RESET which you must leave to complete and set up your tablet from the beginning.
** It is also ESSENTIAL to complete the boot and set up cycle because, after the automatic factory reset you will need to RE-ENABLE developer options and usb debugging. Once you are done continue to 7.
7. In the platform tools folder copy the twrp.img (you should have downloaded earlier, check upwards... )
8. Open the command line again and type:
a. adb reboot bootloader
b. fastboot boot twrp.img
** This will load up TWRP recovery only for this boot time.
****BE EXTRA CAUTIUS TO -NOT- ALLOW twrp to make modifications. Essential! Should you do otherwise go back to how to unbrick your tablet.
9. Choose install, and install supersu.zip.
10. Choose reboot to system and allow complete boot cycle! Essential!
11. Your tablet should now be rooted. However to succesfully flash the twrp recovery you need to have Busybox installed. Download as .apk and install it (at the time of writing this I believe Busybox 54 is the latest version).
12. Once installed back to the windows terminal and issue:
a. adb reboot bootloader
b. fastboot boot twrp.img
ONCE AGAIN - DO -NOT- ALLOW twrp to make modifications!!!!!
13. From you external SD Card install twrp.img, select recovery when prompted.
14. Reboot to system and enjoy!!!!
Note : Install an app that makes it easy to boot to recovery. (I personally use root essentials - Trying the combination keys did nothing for me, or just poped up the chinese options menu. That does not mean the recovery has not been installed correctly. Booting to recovery from rootessential menu, boots straight to twrp)
All you will need and credits:

Results:
(it is in Greek, but you get the idea )
Hope I have helped! Happy playing with the commands and whole process! :good:
Lastly, if you get stuck at any point, you can either use this thread or PM me for further advice, explanation and/or any kind of assistance.
Note: Special thanks to @MotoJunkie01 for actually taking the time to further help people on this thread, as unfortunately I do not currently have the time to do so myself. It is worth checking out @MotoJunkie01 's threads also. There, you can find very useful and updated information.

Hope I have helped! Happy playing with the commands and whole process! I will continue to help as much as I can :good:

Good guide. This tablet has temperamental steps involved with custom recovery and root. This guide gives a good outline of those steps. Here is a link to my thread for Stock Android 6.0 firmware for this tablet for members who need a stock ROM.

Thank you, I appreciate your comment. I was really enthusiastic to read that you are working on a pure Stock Android 6.0 ROM for this device! Will definitely be waiting for that!
Thank you again!

Thank you for the encouragement. I am in hopes that we can eventually get a dedicated device forum for the tb3-850f. I truly believe this tablet has the potential for plenty of future development.
@r&xp I love you so much, I was in the same predicament as you and you helped get my tablet running again. Just wanted to mention, I had to hold volume down when plugging in the USB for the SPFT step instead of volume up. THANK YOU AGAAAAAAAAAAIN <3

Thanks for the comment!!! :silly:
Glad it worked for you. Isn' t it like a really good feeling when you actually see your bricked device boot correctly for the first time after you had almost deemed it unusable???
(also... a... small request... could you please click on that thingy... you know... that ehhh... thanks button???:angel:)
Just an update, since damaging my TB3-850F, I have since ordered another unit from Office Depot which is due to be delivered Monday or Tuesday. Once it arrives, I'll finish my TWRP flashable stock 6.0 ROM for this device and start back on the modified stock ROM.

Looking forward to it. I picked mine up from walmart just yesterday for using as a google maps/car media center
My Lenovo Tab 3 replacement finally arrived in the mail. I'll be picking up where I left off on compiling both unmodified stock and custom stock-based ROMs for this tablet.
On my modified stock based ROM, I'm considering the implementation of Substratum (Root Ver) for theming, but I would like to get the input of other device owners first. So far, I have debloated, deodexed and zipaligned the OS. I am including the modified/patched boot image with SuperSU v2.79 SR3 binaries installed for systemless root, Nova Launcher, Pixel Icon Pack, BusyBox v1.26.2 binaries pre-injected in /su/xbin/, and Kernel Adiutor-Mod installed in /system/apps/ for user defined adjustments to the stock kernel and governors.
You guys please give me input on what you would like included in the ROM. Thanks

I had a Lenovo Tab3 that bricked during the initial set up and this saved me for having an expensive paperweight! The process worked like a charm. You ROCK!

Try again to get TWRP installed to your /recovery partition or, alternatively, try to simply boot into TWRP from fastboot with the fastboot boot twrp.img command. It is common for members to experience some difficulty in installing custom recovery on this device. It has been my experience that most members are successful the second time around.
Thanks MotorJunkie!! But mine after was saved from brick from this thread, i was rooted it also by your instructions from other thread.. Now the gps from GoogleMap doesn't determine the location (even the location already turned on ) ... Plus i couldn't check the systemupdate ( it says connection network failed even i was connecting to wifi already) ...
What should i do, or do you know how to fix it?

System updates (OTAs) won't install on rooted operating systems. To install an OTA, you must have unmodified stock /boot, /system, and /recovery partitions installed. On the GPS issue, go to Settings, Apps, and ensure Google Maps has been granted location access permission.
Hi ...
I followed this guide but during the unbricking' I unplugged the device from USB (since I could not see any input on device or indication in SP Flash Tool).
Now the device will not turn on at all (previously I would see the Lenovo Logo splash screen but then it would just stay at this screen. Now i do not see anything).
When I plug into computer by USB, it causes my computer to freeze up (Windows 10).
Any ideas or is this now completely bricked? (hard bricked).

It sounds like a hard brick. I can't speak for the OP, @r&xp on this, so you may want to get his advice. Have you tried the OP's methods of using your hardware buttons for forcing the device into adb/fastboot recognition? I think this is your only chance of recovering it. By it not powering on, from my experience, a bootloader or bootloader dependent partition has been corrupted, thus hard bricking the tablet.

Hello, I'll weigh in on this one. There are multiple threads above the TB3-850F on this forum and also another forum.
I initially followed a different thread and instructions which caused my problem. Notably do not allow TWRP write access !!! This mistake caused the soft-brick.
Anyone following any other advice about TB3-850F or downloading any other image BEWARe. Only follow the advice in this thread by r&xp:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/lenovo-tab-3-8-tb3-850f-unbrick-root-t3598727
Following this advice I now restored original image and then rooted in just a few hours.. Thank you r&xp for the good advice.
