[Q] Big problem with S3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I actually have a headache with this phone,
My gf had her phone with some issues that were really weird, the phone was charging too slow and the battery was dropping too fast, I decided to change the battery and the charger port, it didn't help, I tried sending it to a store where another person could check it, everything was working good (except for the battery problem) until I did that, after I went again to the store I noticed that they told me that the screen was damaged(not working, the screen is in black and doesnt display anything) I was like WTF but it was working before..
So.. I was about to lose my mind and I prefered to leave from there..
Now, the problem is, my gf wants to restore her information and her photos , etc,
I tried connecting it to my computer but it seems like it doesnt recognize the phone, it hadn't any lock or patron, I can't remember if I enabled the usb debugging in her phone, so.. not an option.
*What I found weird is* : The touch is still working as I can hear something when I try to push anywhere in the screen, the led is working too ..
I'd really appreciate if anyone knows a way to restore the internal memory info that it has, or what else could I do instead of changing the screen? She wants a new phone and that's why I won't change the screen, maybe I will have to sell it later but she wants her photos..

Plug a HDMI lead to a tv set and mirror the screen output.

MTP symbol when not connected to PC

Hi All,
Today when I unpluged my phone from charger I have noticed that I got USB symbol in notification bar, after checking what it is it turned out to be MTP connection but phone was not connected to anything. Next I took the battery out to reboot it and then I got empty battery sign with thermometer warning next to it!?! After few minutes phone booted in safe mode so I took the battery out again but this time for about 10 minutes. It is working fine since but Im worried that there might be something wrong with it. What do you think guys? Have someone had something like that?
Hey,
I had exactly the same thing happen today, tried everything I could think of, factory resets, formatting, cache wiping, tried reflashing multiple times with root and without root, XXKG2, XXKG1, KE7 and back to branded stock firmware. I also used a counter reset jig just in case that had any effect. Anyway, I ended up calling my provider and they suggested it was a hardware fault rather than software or settings and they are sending me a new one tomorrow.
I could only find one thread about a similar issue relating to the Galaxy S though I can't "refind" it, but basically there were a number of posters there with very similar issues and some of them had success cleaning the connectors in the port of the phone. I didn't really fancy trying this and breaking the connector or voiding my warranty and so I went with the easy option.
Hope that helps and hope you get it sorted easily!
Mark
Hi .. I have experienced more or less the same issue: mine was unplaged from charger and switched in "Driving Mode" showing a steering wheel in notification area. That happened many times so I just rebooted the phone and I got the empty battery sign with thermometer warning next to it me too!
Now usb connection is not working anymore I'm still able to charge the phone even flash is working using Odin, but no data connection is detected by any pc with any usb cable!
I've flashed the stock rom and tryed many cooked rom, but usb data is dead!
I think I have to return it on a service center!
Hope that is not your case!
Bye
Looks like it's not a one off then...one thing I would add, just in case anyone hasn't noticed, is that you can still use the phone as by plugging it in to charge then it does boot up properly. In addition, you can also still get into recovery and download via the Home+Volume key+power button methods so you can revert to stock rom etc. It's a bit fiddly to do this though as the phone seems to think its on charge and so you have to time the holding/pressing just right to beat the green battery and temperature warning sign...but at least we can do backups of all our data/apps.
I really do think it might be fixable with a bit of a pointy cleaning tool and maybe some isopropanol...but as I said I didn't want the risk of breaking something further. Worth a try if your carrier isn't very good at replacing things though!

MTP-initialization.

Got some strange bug. In the notification "menu" it often say "mtp-initialization" even though i havent connected a usb to the phone, also it sometimes think im charging the phone and it gives me the charging animation even though i aint charging it. Why is that? It doesnt matter what rom i use the problem is always there.
Another problem i have is when i turn off the phone it shows me the green battery image plus a thermometer that shows me it is overheated or something.. its always there when i turn it off and to turn it on again i have to go to the recovery and reboot it from there to make it boot up. Why?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
me too and it's really really annoying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it does that every 10 secs or so!!!!!!!
I have the same issue. The common denominator is it all starts after I have charged the phone. The MTP tries to initialize even though my usb is disconnected.
When I shut the phone down, it reboots after a few minutes with MTP trying to connect.
When I pull the battery and reinstall, I get a grey battery charging icon followed by a green icon followed by a battery icon with a warning triangle and a thermometer.
Same here. Any solutions yet?
I'm having issues with MTP and my Galaxy Tab 10.1, it says MTP connected after MTP initialisation but the Tab never shows up in Windows and Kies??
Same problem here, with unrooted i9100.
I think it has something to do with the usb port. I've red somewhere that the quality is very bad and that it is very vonurable to dust.
This is sooooo annoying i just want to put music on my phone and the only way to do it is take out my external sd card and put it on.
Had this issue also recently when I watched videos for longer than usual (Only around 40 minutes). Car mode started going crazy and the device wouldn't stay powered down. I then removed the battery for a couple of hours while I was busy and when I put it in again I got the green battery image that the OP described. From my searching this seems to be a problem based around the usb port and its connector. I tried doing what others suggested in similar threads and move the metal pin up slightly but this hasn't helped.
I'll be running the device heavily again tomorrow (Video wise) so if it acts up again I'm calling samsung for a replacement/repair. This is a really ****ty problem and stranded me in the rain as I couldn't even get the device to boot for 20 minutes due to the battery image problem. I also doubt it's a problem with the battery as I replaced my Anker 1900ma battery with the stock one and the problem persisted.
Wouldn't you be able to get it fixed under warranty, expecting of course that you restock back to original state....
Sounds like a hardware fault which would definately go under warranty...

[Q] Charging paused due to over voltage

Over the last few weeks I've been noticing my battery levels fluctuating when I plug it in to charge and alot of the times my phone thinks it's still charging even when the plug is removed. Also when I switch off my phone- the battery charging icon keeps sporadically popping up preventing me from starting my phone- the only way to start it is to actually connect the charger and hit the power button.
I noticed this problem whenever I try any of the ICS roms- the error message 'Charging paused due to over voltage' keeps popping up. I've gone flashed various gingerbread roms thinking it was a software issue but now I think it may be a problem with my charging port. I also checked my voltage levels and they're hovering around 3.9V. Does anyone know what's happening and how to fix it?
Did You get Your handset liquid damaged? Might look like a silly question but i would sell mobiles myself and noticed that such symptoms might to be related to water/condensation damage...
Hopefully not in your case
Well no, my phone's been dry throughout. Never got it wet. The condition has progressively gotten worse over the last week. The switching off problem and ICS issues tipped me off that there was a problem here. All this time I thought my battery fluctuation issues were because of the rom/kernel
Probably the best idea would be to flash stock rom from your country and send it away for warranty repair, with a charger attached... no point fiddling with it yourself (especially that its not firmware related)
Good Luck

Mine does the same - BUT it only started after I flashed an ICS ROM? And it's intermittent; some days it doesn't do it at all, then it'll do it all day... No logic to it? And my phone has never gotten wet either...
Ive had the same problem with all ics roms.now im back to stock gingerbreed.anyway ics on this phase is still beta and problems are normal. w8 for mpre stable rom dude.

Of course; it's a funny one, though? I've just rebooted my phone several times, removed the battery, reinsterted, rebooted, and it's behaving again...
The weird thing is the problem has carried itself over to the gingerbread roms. The core problem is that my phone thinks the usb/power cable is plugged in when it's not

root the phone, go to recovery menu , go format system, data, all there one by one, turn off the phone , put it on download mode, and back to original stock rom

I did all that. Made naff all difference.
Hey guys, it's been solved. I ruled out any kind of software issues and finally went to a tech guy I knew. Told him that I think the USB port is malfunctioning and he removed it and started the phone & there were no issues. He replaced the USB circuit board for me for the equivalent of $17 (RM50). Phone is working just fine. Just so everyone knows I tried cleaning the port and even pushing the pin inside towards the display but they didn't work. All in all I can say that replacing the port is the only real solution because Gingerbread may be forgiving of the over voltage but ICS is going to keep giving the over voltage error every few mins which gets really annoying.
Anyone in Malaysia facing this issue should go see them because they were really helpful and replaced it on the spot. Also many other places said it would take a week to fix and were going to charge me RM150-200. This is a link to their lowyat post- http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?act=ST&f=72&t=2099197&st=0#entry46541006
Glad to know i'm not the only one with this problem. Mine also only started when i put ics on my phone. And when I restored a gingerbread rom it still had the same issues also minus the voltage error. Looks like i'll have to put it back to stock and send it away.
Galaxy S II overcharging issue
Mine is doing the same... but in my case it has a hardware issue: I charged it with my car charger in the truck, but I put the charger at 24V output by mistake... Now my I9100 has that yellow triangle and it's work only when plugged in charger!

[Q] Samsung S2 stuck in boot loop, cannot access Recovery Mode.

Hey Guys, ive scoured google for 2 days now trying to find a way to fix my phone.
two days ago i was doing some work and i left my phone on the table, and later i found out that the battery was low and it had shut off. But when i looked at it, it was just flashing the "samsung galaxy s2 gt-i9100" text logo. (and not the animation circle logo.)
I tried turning it off, didnt work so i thought it had frozen which happens, so i took out the battery and put it back in again.
Then i tried to plug it into my recharger, and it was showing a grey battery icon and was frozen on that screen always, the screen doesnt turn off, the battery icon isn't showing that its charging. doesnt change, just shows the same empty battery grey icon with the refresh circle-arrow in the middle.
I tried taking the battery out leaving it out for 5 minutes, draining the battery from the phone by holding the power button for 10 seconds, then trying to charge the phone. Same issue, only showing the grey battery icon when trying to charge and it never changes or goes away.
SO i tried to boot up the phone, but it wont go past the samsung text logo.
I tried entering recovery, but it just freezes on the samsung text logo.
I can enter Odin download mode, and ive tried installing several different both stock, original and CMW roms, and nothing changes. (except if i use gingerbread, then the grey battery icon just keeps flashing off and on in 5 second intervals when plugged into the charger.)
Ive tried taking the battery out for 8 hours and try booting it, no change.
Ive tried changing the battery, no change (think it has low bat as well maybe).
Ive tried leaving it plugged in overnight, but that only drained whatever power i had left over in one of the batteries.
Ive tried some of the siyah and doriman kernels, and they add a loading bar which gets full on the samsung text screen,
but then freezes after that.
Im losing my mind here, ive tried almost everything i can think of. And would really appreciate any help on this.
UPDATE
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok so to keep this post updated for people experiencing the same issues.
IT seems there is a hardware failure in progress.
BUT i managed to get a temporary fix, it seems that by having the ear plugs connected into the earphone jack in the phone, the phone becomes somewhat usable. I was able to get into recovery, and able to flash a new stock, and its up and running, but as i said this is only a temporary solution as the real issue is that the phone is not conducting the electricity in a proper way that allowed me to recharge my batteries until i had added the earphones...
The phone becomes unusable for me when i remove the earphones again, as i believe its failing to conduct the electricity from the battery properly through the motherboard without something connected into the earphone jack..
SO for people having issues with their phones, it might be a possible way to get your phone temporarily operational again.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Search for Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread, download the 3 part stock firmware linked in the thread, flash it with Odin (only if you absolutely have an I9100/I9100T though).
Edit - Doesn't sound promising though, cross your fingers doing that works.
yeah i tried hoppers guide, didnt help me.
Still stuck on the samsung screen.
Whats wierd is, if ive got the phone on charging, it wont boot to the samsung screen even, it just turns itself off
and returns to the grey battery icon again.
Hang on....Did you try flashing the 3 part firmware like I mentioned ? If you haven't, do it. If you have, it's a service centre/local mobile repair shop job.

Yeah, tried 3 part, even another packages with pit files bootloader and repartitioning from another guide.
still no change, still freezes at samsung text screen.
I dont want to take it to a service center, as there is none around here as far as i know. Norway.
If i can just get it into recovery mode i can prob fix it, but i cant fracking enter recovery. Its driving me insane.
Given what you've tried, no chance of fixing it yourself by the usual methods.
Either take it to a local mobile repair shop & ask them to source a 2nd hand motherboard for you & put it in, or you source one (from a 'donor' phone; a phone with a broken screen that is otherwise OK for example, search online) & either replace it yourself or pay the local mobile repair shop to do it if you're not confident enough.
have you ever flashed a rom on that before..... or is this a stock ROM phone we are talking about???
if it was a stock ROM phone....then did it receive updates over carrier network and started to install itself???
if yes then you should have not stopped it...... i have some problem with phone 3 days ago.... i downloaded latest XWMS1 released for nordic region....... phone is fixed and i am back to neatrom 5.3.1
i suggest you download XWMS1 ...and try flashing it via Odin..... might start......
keep fingers crossed

It wasn't any update or anything, it was related to the battery i think as the batt was low.
And instead of recharging the battery, it went into bootloop and started draining the battery more when it was plugged into the charger.
ive downloaded xwms1, still stuck in bootloop.
Ive even opened it up to see if it was a hardware issue, i see no flaws, all buttons work and nothing is stuck.
the phone just keeps going to the samsung logo, and wont go into recovery mode.
It can easily go into download mode, but recovery mode is just not happening.
at this point i just ordered the Xperia Z1 instead, but i still want to fix this phone and give it to my dad or something.

errrrm - just a thought (and it's a real long shot) I had some strange battery drain (bootloop) issues with a brand new i9100 and it turned out that the micro sd card I was using was corrupt, took it out and it worked. Might be worth a try but like I said its a long shot. If that does not work I agree with mistahbungle and looks like you wil need to replace the mb.

I've went through this on my Hercules, T-Mobile S2. I had Android tweaker pro, removed all of the tweaks, and rebooted. It took me quite a while but I was able to get into recovery by the normal button mashing.
DO NOT HAVE THE PHONE PLUGGED INTO THE CHARGER.
PRESS THE VOLUME BUTTONS THEN THE POWER BUTTON WHILE STILL HOLDING THE VOLUME BUTTONS.
AS SOON AS YOU FEEL THE FIRST VIBRATION, LET GO OF ONLY THE POWER BUTTON!
CONTINUE TO HOLD THE VOLUME BUTTONS UNTIL YOUR RECOVERY LOADS.
THAT IS WHAT HAS WORKED FOR ME.

i kinda cloned my ROM , it happened by mistake while trying to flash my kernel , now that my phone is stuck in samsung start up logo , . tried to reboot still the same result. . . :crying:
No recovery ? If that's the case, stock rom from Samfirmware, flash with Odin to get a 'clean slate' (How ? Thread stickied near top of Q&A has instructions) & re-try whatever it was you wanted to do. If you do have recovery, try a factory reset in the first instance, if that doesn't work or if you have recovery but can't do one for whatever reason, proceed with the stock flash via Odin.
Thanks
thanks a lot mate , my fone back in action. successfully flashed, now running on JB 4.3.1 on Paranoidandroid 3.99-RC2 , so far so good .:victory:

EDIT : any suggestion how to remove warning symbol (yellow triangle) while booting .
Possibly triangle away.Search to get the free version.

A friend of mine had am Android phone that had a similar problem. It always showed the headphones on the status bar and Could not be heard. If you will take your phone apart then you can look for bridges in the solder points. These happen from poor construction and over heating. Fix the bridges and you should be good to go.

I did take it apart and had a quick look, all seems ok. However I was not ready to junk the phone so I improvised a little, its not pretty but it works.
I had an old headphone jack which I cut down so as it would just fit into the jack point, installed Soundabout Pro app which forces the calls to come out the earpiece and not headphones voila it works. In the end it cost me a lot of time surfing countless forums, anger management control and some joy at getting it to work. Still without the help people give on this and other forums it would be a useless phone :fingers-crossed:

[Q] SGS2 battery problem maybe?

Hey all,
so a few months ago my SGS2 went off. It was an interesting behave of it, it just started to turn off sometimes, without any reason, without any popups (eg. battery low) or anything. I was really curious about this problem but I didnt have a single idea of what happened to it. Like a week later, it didnt turn on at all. I disassembled it, and found out that my secondary microphones cable broke. I thought that was the problem, so I ordered a new module (which includes vibrating motor, secondary microphone, ear-piece, and the jack).. I waited 3weeks, the first one arrived broken. I waited another month, and today the second one arrived in one piece. I put it inside the device to see if it works but its not. NOW the problem is, like it was before I ordered this module, when I try to turn the phone on, it doesnt do anything at all.(with the broken secondary mic cable it did, it went till the samsung logo and then bam, blackout) IF I put it up on charger, it says the battery is FULL, and from then, I push the power button and it starts to turn on, but goes until the Samsung logo, or sometimes it did boot, but thats rare, and then again BAM, blackout. Now I was like wtf? So i tried to reach recovery, I did a full hard reset to the full stock SGS2 ROM, tried other kernels, recoveries, ROM's, but nothing helped me. NOW If i enter DOWNLOAD mode without the charger, it says "Low battery! Cant download." and this happens right after i plugged the charger out, and it told me that the battery is full (what a liar), but when i plug the charger in, I can reach DOWNLOAD mode, and Recovery mode too, but they do blackouts after a few minutes too...
Any ideas?
Would be happy if anyone could help me out...
thanks :good:

oh and if it matters, its GT-I9100, 2 years old.
if you can get your hands on a different battery, i would recommned you to test it with that too.
as your device is 2 years old and i am assuming you havent changed the battery yet, there are strong chances of battery life getting over.

thanks for your response!
well today i am about to test a new battery, i hope thats what the problem is... an extra thing, and yes im stupid because of this but i left my battery in the phone for the 2 months while it was off... a friend told me that it can cause the batterys death, is that possible?
If u want to leave your phone switched off then it's better to charge it and then remove the battery from the phone. So there is a possibility that your battery is Screwed because of that time when you kept it in the phone itself.
