[Q] Brand New Galaxy Alpha - Samsung Galaxy Alpha

I am looking to get a Galaxy Alpha... Not today, maybe not tomorrow; But very soon. While I wait, I wanted to know a few things:
1) GSM Arena shows that the SM-G850M has the bands for AT&T (700, 1700, 1900) and I wanted to confirm this before I bought it. I did some research and the bands are correct (17, 4, 2 - respectively).
2) Since I believe this phone to be for Vadafone, what kind (if any) Carrier bloatwear is there? Can it be removed? How easy is it? (I do know my way around Android a bit) - FYI, I don't care about the Samsung/Google stuff, that can stay
3) I found CF-Auto-Root for the SM-G850M, is that the easiest way to root? Is there anything I should know before opening the box?
4) Lastly, is there a recovery (either TWRP or CWR) for the SM-G850M?? All I can seem to find is one for the SM-G850F
Thank,
toonhead85

Hello,
You will notice yourself apps that are bloatware
Yes, indeed, that is the easiest way to root (you have to do it through Odin though)
Yes there are recoveries for the specified model, just google it (and ofc flash it through Odin)

[Q] Using the AT&T GSII on other Networks

Hello guys!
I have a international I9100 and I live in Brazil. I'm looking forward to buying the AT&T GSII for a girl to use here, since it is cheaper then the I9100.
What I know:
It is technically capable of running here, both the GSM and 3G frequencies.
I can install CM7 (when ready) and forget everything about something locked.
You can unlock the olders USA's Galaxy S.
I use on my I9100 the newer Speedmod Kernel that says it's based on the AT&T GSII kernel(!!!!).
What I want to know:
Is it locked for AT&T?
Can I unlock it using a Samsung ROM?
Can I use a International GSII ROM directly?
I will update this post with the answers to properly share with everybody.
I really appreciate it! Thanks!

Answers: (thanks nyydynasty!)
1) yes, it is locked to AT&T but you can unlock it with the Unlock Galaxy app from the market (https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_result)
2) no
3) no

2) no
3) no, although this might be possible if you were to mix and match modems but I'll leave that one to the devs to answer. Quick answer is no, to be safe.
Thanks!
Holy ****, there is an app for that!
there's an app for almost anything lol
You can get the SIM unlocked using an online service. Once it's unlocked, it'll perform the same as the ISGS2 when roaming.
Unlock app requires root. I think it's also possible to pull the unlock code manually from one of the partitions, can't remember which one.
I9100 ROM porting for basic functionality may only require swapping out the kernel and modem (for CWM-flashable ROMs). I think this is how DG ported Perception (with a few other specific tweaks to improve compatibility.) It's something no one has really put significant effort into because there's a lot of more basic things to do still.
Odin-flashed ROMs (like Litening) don't work, even if you remove the kernel and modem and just flash the system image - I tried.

I believe either way you will need to be root because the unlock code is in the nvdata.bin in the /efs/ folder. Same thing that was with the us variants of the galaxy s. The only problem I know of is that if you flash a custom rom, good luck if you did not backup the original efs folder at all. With my sgs2 *i777*, I backed it up and ran the sgs unlock tool. Unlocked my phone with ease.

[Q] t-mobile galaxy tab 10.1 4g

Bought the T-mobile galaxy tab 10.1 4g. I am interested in rooting the device so that I can remove unwanted bloatware. I am somewhat concerned by the absence of any comment on the device. I have one week to return it. Should I? Seems that not one single person has an interest in tweaking this device. I thought that this site would have root instructions on line within hours of the November release. I am concerned that it has not. It has version 3.2. Please advise. Thanks.
I too an anxiously awaiting some coverage on this... love the tablet, but dont willing to risk experimenting with it w/o more experience recovering devices.
The largest number of people here by far have Wi-Fi Tabs (P7510) followed by 3G Tabs (P7500). I'd guess about 15-25% have VZW LTE Tabs. Support for the latter dev wise and even from VZW has been pretty light. The good news is the T-Mobile Tab isn't 4G, but 3G HSPA+, the same as the international P7500. The only difference is it supports T-Mobile's funky AWS bands. Depending on how similar it is to the P7500, you may be able to use its ROMs. Post in the dev section and see if one of the P7500 dev's can help figure it out.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

Stock recovery?
Question:
Any of you who have rooted found/have a copy of the stock recovery in case I need to return or resale? I've been searching for a while and can't figure which one is the one for the US TMO variant.

Looks like there is plenty of them, particularly international versions. Model seems to me that is 7500. However, I'm not flashing anything until I find the stock restore for Recovery - my previous post.
(Woops... just realized I flashed CWM Recovery last night in order to root so I could unlock radio . So much for being careful grrr)
Has anyone tried any of the available ROMs?

[Q] Korean Galaxy S II same as others?

Hi, I'm from Korea, and have the Korean Galaxy S 2, not European or American. I'm wondering if the method for unlock is same, and if roms for "Galaxy S 2" will work on the Korean phone. Or does there have to be a special rom for the Korean version? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Thanks, but that seems to be about battery. I'm not worried about battery, but rooting and roms. I don't want to "brick" my phone, so I want to know absolutely before I do it.
Will the "normal" root method work for the Korean version?
And will "normal" roms (cyanogen mod for example) work fine on the Korean version?
Those are my questions. Sorry if it was hard to understand.
Where is the original make of Samsung mobiles?

Root methods and ROMs are almost always intended for ONE particular model of phone. It is important to note that there are about a half dozen different models of phone, which are all marketed as the "Galaxy SII". However, as stated, they are actually different models.
So your first step is to determine the actual model of your phone. Best way to do that is remove your battery and see what it says for "Model:" on the label underneath. Once you have that, search the forum for root methods and ROMs for that model only.
Under no circumstances should you blindly try using a root method or flash a ROM that isn't intended for your phone. If you choose NOT to heed my warning, then at best, your phone will not behave normally. At worst, you will end up with a paperweight.
However, all that said; you said you have a Korean variant - that means your model SHOULD start with "SHW-". In your case, apparently you CAN flash any ROM intended for the GT-I9100. However, that said, if you DO flash an I9100 ROM to your phone, you will likely lose any NFC functionality you may have, as the I9100 is not NFC equipped, so the ROM won't have it programmed into it. See this thread for more details.
I'm not certain about rooting though. The ZergRush exploit may still work for you. I'm guessing that thread I linked above may hold the answer.
If you are korean..i think u better ask Tegrak (Lulz Kernel/Tegrak OverClock Developer)..Cause he`s korean too

[Q]at&t unocked vs international factory unlocked

I want to buy one m8. what is the difference between at&t factory unlocked and international factory unlocked version. can i flash roms in international version thread on at&t factory unlocked model directly??
Yes you can flash any rom you want from the international thread. I am currently running Android Revolution.
Sent from my unknown using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
The 3G and LTE band compatibility is different. Do you intend to use on the AT&T network? If so, the "international" (EMEA) version is compatible with AT&T's 3G bands (850 and 1900 MHz); but lacks both of the LTE bands used by AT&T (700 and 1700 MHz) according to this: http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_one_(m8)-6074.php
Not band compatibility is set in hardware, and cannot be changed by flashing different software (ROM, radio, etc.). This means the EMEA version cannot be used on AT&T's LTE network, not matter what you do.
If using on a carrier besides AT&T, I'd check the band compatibility with what your carrier uses. Even if the AT&T version is compatible (with you carrier), I'd probably recommend the international version over it (if compatible as well). The AT&T version is loaded with crappy AT&T bloat and limitations. For instance, WiFi hotspot is blocked, so bootloader needs to be unlocked and the phone rooted in order to make it work on other networks.
Plus, there is the ugly AT&T logo on the back.
Just thought i would bump this thread instead of making a new one. I bought an unlocked at&t htc one m8 off of ebay that i plan to use in another country (i study abroad). I already checked that the frequency bands are compatible, etc. Here's the thing, i don't want my phone to have anything to do with at&t other than the logo in the back. In other words, i want to make it as similar as posible (if not exactly the same) to the international unlocked version. Is this possible with just software changes, etc? (i've read the phones are the same in terms of hardware). I want to remove all at&t bloatware and limitations. can someone please give me quick explanations of what i need to do or point me in the right direction? I'm not new to xda or rooting, but the only smartphone i've ever had is a samsung vibrant (which i've rooted and flashed roms countless times).. this is my first htc phone, so im not very familiar with htcdev or s-off.. but i learn quickly.
I would really appreciate some help

I have the ViperOneM8 rom installed. What is even cool is in the tweeks, you can change the AT&T bootup and logoff screen to a viperone screen. And change the AT&T logo in the pull down menu to any picture you want. s-off isn't really needed unless you plan on changing the kernel.

What you describe is easy to do by just unlocking the bootloader, installing custom recovery, and flashing any international based stock rooted ROM or custom ROM. I basically have done the same, as even though AT&T is my carrier, I absolutely hate their branding, non-standard signal icons, bloatware, and limitations (particularly Wifi Hotspot/tethering).
As the previous user already suggested, learning and reading is the best thing for you to do. Don't proceed until you have a good understanding of the concepts and process. My Index thread (specific to the AT&T versions) is a good place to start up reading: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2751432
Great, thanks for the information and guidance guys. i'll definitely spend the next couple days reading before rooting the device, i can't afford to brick it. Any other tips or advices as to how to go about rooting, etc?
Developer build device and ATT device are same exact hardware, ONLY difference is ones sim locked and other isnt, bought 2 developer device from [email protected]'s both run fine on ATT networks...

If you look at my Index thread I linked above, the first item under "Unlock Bootloader, ROOT, S-Off" is an excellent step-by-step guide to rooting. There really isn't much I can't add, the guide is so thorough. But I'd still advise to read around and make sure you fully understand all the concepts and steps, and not just blindly follow the guide.
If the goal is to install a custom ROM, you can stop before the step in guide where it says to flash SuperSU (after flashing TWRP), and just put a ROM on the phone and flash in recovery similar to how you have done in the past. The guide is written with the intent of staying on the stock ROM and rooting.
One tip I can give, is that you may notice there are some Toolkits that attempt to automate some of the process (bootloader unlock, custom recovery, root, etc.). I would actually recommend avoiding the use of these. Reason being, the steps aren't actually all that hard to do "manually", plus these toolkits (while well meaning) shortcut the learning process, and rob you of a valuable learning opportunity.
I'm assuming OP doesn't want a custom ROM or root. Just to convert the AT&T branded model to a stock unlocked model, and still get OTA updates. This is possible. You need to unlock the bootloader, get S-OFF, and then follow this guide (you can skip step 1, changing MID): http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/general/change-wwe-m8-to-dev-edition-ota-t2826567

One last question guys, hopefully somebody can answer me. I've already read a few topics on the terminology used (s-off, ruu, htcdev, etc.), and things don't seem to be too far from what i thought they were. I'm ready to root and flash a custom rom, but here's my question:
I'm a very methodical person, i like to know what I'm doing and that it's the right way to do it. When i flashed a new rom (or rom version) on my samsung vibrant i would do a full wipe (factory reset, clear chache, clear dalvik cache, format system, and format data) before flashing, then i would flash the rom, and then i would flash the rom on top of itself without doing a full wipe. This method worked for me for over 3 years and kept me from getting common bugs some people complained about. Is it fine if i do this with my m8? (i mainly want to know if it can cause problems).. What's your common flash routine?
Thanks for the help guys
I am simple, I do what you do except the double flash.

What you've stated is fine. Although factory reset already wipes data, cache and Dalvik, so its a bit redundant.
I'm the opposite of methodical (at least in the way you describe). I like to get things done with as few steps as possible (while still doing it right). I've similarly been flashing ROMs on Android devices for 4 years (4 HTC devices and 2 Samsung). But I hardly ever wipe system (flashing a ROM does that by default) and never double flash, and I've never had any issues I would attribute to flashing methods.
Some folks will swear by wiping system for every ROM flash, but honestly while there is nothing wrong with it, I don't believe in it and almost never do it (unless sometimes where the ROM specifically says to do so in the instructions).
On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with redundancy, and if you like to be methodical and thorough I would say just keep doing what you have been doing.

Do fastboot getvar all, and post the results (delete IMEI and serial number before posting) and if we look at that info, we can probably determine what version it is.

[Q] Questions about T-Mobile and MetroPCS Galaxy S5

Hello everyone,
Let me preface this by saying that I have googled this extensively and used the search feature on XDA but so far I have come up with no clear results. Apologize if this has been asked before (it probably has). I hope you guys can help me by providing me with some definite answers.
Background:
I've been researching about getting Lollipop on my device (I had it on my rooted sprint s4 and I miss it dearly). I've heard that the MetroPCS S5 is the exact phone as the T-Mobile S5. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to confirm whether that's the case or not. I have a MetroPCS S5 (SM-G900T1), and I would greatly appreciate it if you guys took the time to answer these questions for me:
1) Are they really the same phone?
AFTER SIM-UNLOCKING THE PHONE
2) Can I put T-Mobile S5 custom recoveries on the Metro Version?
3) Can I put T-Mobile S5 custom ROMs on the Metro version?
If the answers to question 2 and 3 is "NO" then where can I find a place where people are developing for the MetroPCS S5 or that place doesn't exist?
Thank you all for reading and for any help.
1) They are mostly the same as they do use the same network.
2) Any KLTE recovery will work.
3) Any KLTE rom SHOULD work, check the OP of the roms developer. Any KLTE AOSP rom will work.
Here is a site showing the recoveries are the same. -->HERE<--

Can you expect in the distant future a way to install a custom recovery without tripping the knox count (I believe that's what it's called)? As far as I know there's no way to reset that.

Doubtful that Knox will be figured out anytime in the near future. And you are correct, you cannot reset it once it's tripped.
But if you look around at the Knox threads, the vast majority of users that have tripped Knox have not had any problem getting service or warranty work. So for the most part it's a non issue.
Of course YMMV
