Google drive app - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am a heavy google drive user and often upload a lot of videos pictures.
Last night I uploaded 1.5gb of media.
This morning I have a notification telling me my storage space is running out. And sure enough its down to 75mb!! Yes, Megabytes!
It seems that when I upload media it is stored locally on the device.
From what I see in /data/data/com.google.android.apps.drive
So effectively I have 2 of each file?
Is this correct?
Am I safe to delete these in the data folder?

Internal Storage Inexplicably Full

My internal storage keeps filling up completely and I can't seem to get to the bottom of it. I first noticed the problem about a month ago...so I deleted all my big games, which left me with about 1.8GB of space on internal storage. Since then, I have only installed a couple of small apps and my internal storage in completely full again.... showing 0mb available.
There are no pictures, videos or music files of any kind currently stored on my phone.
Thanks!
Nothing? Google is getting me nowhere... fast I'll keep digging for now.
Download the app "Disk Usage" and run it for whichever storage (internal or external) and it will list everything installed in a graphical version.

Thank you for that. I was easily able to get to the bottom of this using that app. Here are the big offenders on my phone:
\sdcard\Android\Data\com.amazon.venezia\cache = deleted all the files in this directory and it freed up 3.7GB.
Uninstalled google currents and deleted the entire directory \sdcard\Android\Data\com.google.android.apps.currents = free up over 3GB.
I now have over 6GB of free space on my phone after making those two changes. CRAZY!!!!
Also keep an eye on the following folders and make sure you clean them from time to time.
LazyList
LOST.DIR
temp
Also the Download folder grows very quickly if you download many things from the Browser or email.
I have managed to free several gigabytes this way.
Cheers!

Oh wow I wish I had know about this earlier! I just cleared up 5GB of junk I didn't need anymore.

Dropbox beta - 5 gigs free on top of the initial 2 gigs

So just a heads up for everyone that uses dropbox or wants to start using dropbox, they are offering you up to 5 free gigs for using their new automatic camera upload feature on their beta software. The link for the desktop version of dropbox: http://forums.dropbox.com/topic.php?id=53104&replies=718
I believe they just came out with an android app as well where you can also get 5 free gigs (combined total though not 5 from desktop and 5 from android)
All you have to do is have some sort of external hard drive or sd card and have some .jpg files on there. You get 500 free megs for every 500 you upload for a max of 5 gigs.
Some tips:
1) If you already have a dropbox account with pictures of any file on there, you can just copy them from your dropbox folder to the sd card (CHANGE ANY NON-JPG EXTENSIONS TO JPG). That way when dropbox goes to find pictures and starts uploading, you will actually be syncing the files and not uploading (since those files are already in your account/cloud). You'll still get the 5 gigs as long as you let dropbox automatically upload pictures. You can delete the files afterwards.
2) Download this fake image zip (https://s3.amazonaws.com/picturesharing/fakeimages.tar.bz2) It's basically 17k zip file worth of jpg files but bloated so it actually reads 5 gigs. Now you can unzip the .tar.bz2 and unzip it again until you get a folder with jpgs (so unzip twice since it's a zip within a zip). Put these fake images onto your SD card, unmount the SD card, and load the SD card again (or USB drive). Dropbox will search for images when you plug in the sd card and will sync the jpgs.
From my own experience, just let the jpgs sync to your Camera Upload folder and you'll get the bonus space. You're not actually uploading 5gigs worth of jpgs because it's actually 17kb so don't you worry if you have slow upload speeds (like me).
3) If for some reason dropbox doesn't find the jpgs, try making a folder called DCIM and putting the jpgs in that folder.
If you don't have dropbox, it's a great way to save files and share on the cloud! You can sign up at dropbox.com or you can get another 250mb of free space by signing up as my referral, which I would love! my referral link is: http://db.tt/a4mt2G6
Enjoy!
I downloaded & installed v1.3.13 but cannot see any way to sync any portable devices - am I missing something?
EDIT - Doh! I just read the instructions about removing then reinserting the USB stick!
EDIT again - just reinserted my USB stick & nothing seems to be happening?
Don't forget, TouchPad owners get a free 50GB account from Box.com (used to be .net) - you just have to sign up from withing webOS.
2GB and even 5GB just sounds so dinky.
Worked like a charm!!!! Thanks.
dwl99 after you insert your usb stick (if you have disabled the autoplay feature) you have to right click on it and choose import photos using dropbox and it should work great.

That is true. The Box.com deal is better but it is also good to have a Dropbox account with storage space if you use Titanium Backup.
Follow the link provided in the first post and download the windows client. I used this dl-web.dropbox.com/u/17/Dropbox%201.3.13.exe
Box may have larger space, but you only have a 100mb file size limit. Dropbox the only limit you have is your total space.
btw, i signed up under your link!

thank you! yeah I have a box.net but it sucks to have that 100mb limit and I like how dropbox has the desktop client so if I wanted to upload anything I can just put it into my dropbox folder and it'll automatically upload by itself

do you have windows or mac? I have a mac so I might not be able to help you if you have a windows, but I think you can just right click the usb stick and click on import photos through dropbox. If that doesn't work, is it possible to turn on autoplay?

Thanks for the reply. I'm on Windoze. Currently copying the fake jpg's to a microSD card in case it doesn't like my USB stick. Watch this space......
Dropbox or.... Sugar Sync!
Hi thanks for that, the normal (free) dropbox size could always do with being bigger! I was amazed when I found out and signed up for box.net's free 50gb but found it to be garbage. The 25mb file limit (well sound's like it's now 100mb from your posts) was prohibitive for files that would actually make use of 50gb and the lack of desktop sync (unless you are a business customer) also combined to make it pointless of me.
Genuinely not trying to sound too salesman-like but.. I recently started using sugar sync. It's 5gb free vs 2gb with dropbox. And it has no file size limit (like box.net). And it has desktop sync (like dropbox). And you can sync *any* folders on your computer with a right click context menu (better than dropbox where they all have to be in dropbox folder). And any pics or music you sync can then be streamed to any mobile android/ios etc device via their app (cos often that right click is easier than connecting & uploading). It's more spacious, easy and powerful in my experience so far. And you can select your dropbox folder as one to sync giving you double cloud backup protection and easing the transition if you want to switch!
I still use dropbox cos that's what I'm used to but I'm thinking of dropping it soon. If you're interested in giving it a try, PM me your email and I'll send you an invite which will give us both an extra 0.5gb on top of the 5gb you normally get. (And another advantage - there's no limit to how much space you can get via recommendations! unlike dropbox...). Yes I am shamelessly trying to increase my sugar sync storage but I do genuinely find it better and so might you and you'll get another 0.5gb too.
i dont think it increased it to the max.... cause now i only have 6.75 amount of space not 7.25
I'm at 11.7gb from referrals, using the jpg zip i can still get another 5?

yeah if you haven't done their new camera upload thing
edit: im an idiot
Thanks for the fake pics. This worked perfectly!
This is weird. I have installed Dropbox 1.3.13 o2 2 different Win7 64-bit and 1 WinXP computers. I have tried the fake jpg's on a USB stick and a microSD card and also tried putting the jpg's inside a DCIM folder but Dropbox still looks exactly the same as before. When I right-click the Dropbox taskbar icon there is no option to sync the DCIM folder. If I right-click the DCIM folder or the USB/SD card there is also no option to do anything with Dropbox. Surely I'm missing something really obvious???
EDIT - I just enabled Autoplay on the SD card on the WinXP machine & it now gives an option to sync when the card is reinserted.
EDIT again - just got it working on the Win7 PC - I needed to enable Autoplay for pictures, reinsert the USB stick, right click on the drive and then select Autoplay & then Dropbox sync.
Thanks for the tip.I recently signed up for Dropbox and is pretty awesome compared to others like box.com which offers 50GB of free is you use certain device. And what a horrible experience it was....what is the point of having all that space if the features are so limited so Dropbox has loyal customer. Thanks to the OP for the tip and to Dropbox.
Thanks for this. I also got capped at 6.75 even though i had a couple referrals. Still more than I had.

[Q] Google Drive and Cloud Computing...

I have never used cloud storage before, however I assumed with my 40mb/s download and 8mb/s upload that it was be quick and easy.
However when I went to upload a 1.5gb movie onto Google Drive, it took around 2-3 hours to complete. It finally completed and I thought great, I can now watch it. I loaded up the Google Drive app on my phone located the file, clicked it to open and play, and it now says it has to load the file which is taking at least 10-15 minutes to complete.
Is this really what cloud storage is like? I could have copied the file onto my device in about 15 minutes, instead with google drive (which I thought would have been faster) is taking about 3 hours 15 minutes I'm more concerned as I just ordered the Nexus 7 tablet, and will be relying on cloud storage for accessing media on it!
This is my problem with droid too. It seems cloud storage is just that, storage. I came from wp7 and was used to uploading movies from pc to skydive and then streaming them on the phone player.
I've looked for an app on play for ages but nothing gives this functionality. Is jellybean any better? I know ios can stream from cloud, so it isn't a linux shortcoming, there must be an app, please someone tell us how

How do I change the folder where Google Drive saves files?

Is there a way to change where Google Drive saves files when they are downloaded (on Android devices NOT Windows PCS)? If so how? I all of a sudden noticed I was low on internal storage space on my phone and after spending all night trying to figure out what was taking up all the space I discovered it was a 1GB Video file made by my phones camera that Google Drive for some reason uploaded to my phones internal memory (or did The Google Drive App automatically download it wen it saw a new file in my Online Google Drive?) after I uploaded it to my Google Drive from my phone even though it was already on my External Memory card, why did Google Drive download it to my phones internal memory? That's redundant and unnecessary. How do I set Google Drive to Not download Videos unless I prompt it to?
Thanks

Some recently taken photos/videos are only accessible by Google Photos, appear to be in its app data and not movable

Very peculiar issue occurring: there are a fair amount of photos and videos that show up under google photos under library -> photos on device -> camera with SDCard Icon.
But the location for these files is "/external/video/media" or "/external/image/media" under ""On Device (size)." The other files taken in a similar way are correctly on "/storage/9C32-13OC/DCIM/Camera"
When clicking these files, they play normally, clicking share and More or Create Link says "Error, could not download media" and using Google Photos to Move / Copy says "Trouble Moving 1 item"
When ejecting the SDCard and physically removing it while keeping Google Photos open, all the files actually on /storage/<ID> disappear, and all these weird files remain and can be played. This is how I discovered it wasn't just today's videos, which were mysteriously not being uploaded to my nextcloud. No other app can see these videos/images, including the system's gallery app, and they are not in the internal emulated "SDcard"
These are on my SO's phone and I use the exact same model phone. I did discover that I do have some files like these but hey are all older than the oldest file on my SDCard, e.g. Google Photos has somehow decided to cache them. But on my SO's phone, these files are intermingled with the ones she's actually taken
Interestingly when I switch the google photos account to another google user logged on the phone, those files disappear. I did try moving files to the locked folder but it says "Trouble moving to Locked Folder. Try again later"— I did verify I could move files actually on the SDCard there, and they are then removed from all views except Locked Folder.
In this folder, on the top right when clicking the SDCard Icon, it does show the "SD Card folder" as "file:///storage/9C32-13OC/DCIM/Camera" as expected.
I searched for the filename in a file browser as well as in adb shell (using find / -name "filename" 2> /dev/null) and nothing comes up. As there are some lengthy videos in here, I used DiskUsage to see what might be using a lot of space, and the Google Photos app is using 7.55 GB of data, so it seems like they are being stored there. And it makes sense why they can't be found, as /data/data/com.google.android.apps.photos is only accessible by that app or the system, and I'm unrooted.
My SO said she took them the same way she normally takes photos and video, and of course when I take some they show up on the actual SDCard. I suppose in theory I could use adb backup and follow instructions on how to decrypt the data files, but really what the heck is going on?
We aren't on the latest phone or even the latest Google Photos app (could be a bug with this specific version, but then again google photos isn't taking the photos/videos, the system Camera app is). I could try upgrading her google photos but I also don't want to lose these videos of our kid. It does seem like it would back them up, but we don't have enough Google Storage to back them up online (hence why we use nextcloud), and they don't even show up under different google accounts as mentioned.

Well this didn't work, as google photos does not back up with adb, as some apps can specify this.
Some of these videos did get uploaded to google photos, but they are (now) compressed to under 1/8th their size (the original size is noted correctly in google photos), and from 4k to HD.
From what I had recalled, when they are first uploaded, they are available at their original size to be downloaded. So I tried deleting one to get it to re-upload, and now that video no longer shows up on my SDCard under "/external/video/media" so I basically lost the original HQ video of my kid, great.
Any ideas?
