MMS Issues - FIXED!!! - Xperia Z3v General

Edit: Found a fix for this.
I downloaded about 6 different texting apps and the only one that fixed my MMS issues was Textra, and I had to configure it in a very specific way.
Downloaded Textra
MMS
Use MMS for Group Chats = CHECKED
MMS Settings
Prefer WiFi = Unchecked
Activate Mobile Data = CHECKED
T-Mobile WiFi Calling Fix = Unchecked
APN Settings
Manually Configure APN = CHECKED
MMSC: http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms
MMS Proxy: *leave blank*
MMS Proxy Port: 80
Save the settings and reboot your device and test it out.
I tried to do similar settings on other texting apps but none of them fixed my MMS issues. Now with Textra they send super smoothly. Some apps won't even let you configure the APN. I tried this in Handcent and GoSMS and it didn't work. I also can't change the default APN settings within the phone.
I believe the specific thing that got this to work was the Activate Mobile Data = CHECKED option in Textra.
Thanks to all in the thread that previously mentioned using Textra!
The Z3V is now a perfect phone LOL
Original Post was here:
Wondering if anyone else runs into MMS issues on their Z3V? Mine is incredibly slow at both sending/receiving MMS. I am using the Verizon Messages App, I have tried almost every other Messaging app out there (Handcent, Textra, GoSMS, etc...) and none of them solve the problem.
Verizon Messages had potential as the Tablet/PC versions are able to use MMS over a Data/Wifi connection (rather than the MMS-specific data). Unfortunately, on the phone versions of the app, it only seeks through data/wifi if a regular MMS-data connection is not available. I've contacted VZW about this issue before and they've tried escalating my case and I've spoken to developers and voiced my concerns. Still no fix unfortunately.
I thought the MMS issues were inherent to VZW's network, however, iPhone users have absolutely no problem receiving or sending MMS from/to Android users. (Obviously when they send to iPhone users it uses data through iMessage).
The poor MMS performance makes group-texting very frustrating with my friends. Yes, there are alternatives like whatsapp, hangouts, that use data, but that forces other users to download those apps. (And Hangouts is super broken as is).
Wondering if anyone has figured out a solution for getting lag-free group messaging/MMS on their Z3v? I've also tried messing with the APN settings but everything is grayed out.
On another note, I will randomly get messages "No APN present on device", anyone else get those?

I use textra and group text alot. When I'm in a place with good cell service group texts are great. However at my parents house where the service is not good as in barely can make phone calls, group texts come in bunches. Also get the apn error message and I tap the notification and all the texts come through.

I use regular text messaging app and I've never experienced problems. Maybe do a quick reboot to see if it helps?

No a reboot does not fix the issue. Maybe it's the area I'm in (Los Angeles County) that is dealing with a ton of bandwidth? But it still doesn't explain why iPhone users are able to use MMS just fine.
VZW has even gone as far as sending me a beta version of their newer app to try to run some testing, but that ended up getting replaced with a newer release of which nothing was fixed.

I have a Z3 from Tmobile and sometimes I can't download MMS...... or don't recieve them until much later. Sometimes I only recieve the replies from people, not the original sender.

I've never had a phone that didn't have a hickup or two or three with MMS from time to time. My opinion it has much less to do with the app or phone than it does with the current status of the network.

If that's the case, why do iPhone users have no problems with their MMS on verizon? And no I'm not referring to iMessage. I mean when they are sending/receiving group texts to Android users.
We can have our phones side by side, and the iPhone users will receive the group message a whole minute faster than us android users. And yes the original message was sent from an android device.

Ha, well if iPhone never has problems then you proved my generalized opinion on the matter wrong. My apologies. I've honestly never owned an iPhone and used it as my daily driver, much less time tested it against Androids. I have however been technical support for iPhones in my family and to say there are never issues is not exactly true either, it's just much less often when it comes to MMS.

No need to apologize, you're correct, an iPhone isn't going to be perfect either. While they do run into their occasional hiccups with MMS, our Android hiccups seem to be constant. It's quite frustrating to be on a group text with 5+ friends and the Android users are getting incredibly delayed messages. By the time the messages come in, the topic of conversation has past.
It just makes me wonder, what about Android devices (on VZW at least) is causing the craptastic MMS issues that iPhones don't seem to have a problem with. Although these MMS issues are infuriating, it's not enough to make me switch to an iPhone. There are just too many features I love on the z3v (and Android in general).

I have to post here so I can say I have had an online conversation with ConanOBrien.
My wife has problems with her Z3v, but I don't, we can get the same MMS message and I will have no problems and hers will indicate it couldn't download the MMS . Same with sending hers has a problem mine doesn't, same room feet away from each other.
I blame an app, I have very few apps but she has a few games, I think maybe one may be accessing her MMS and causing a problem, only logical answer I can think of.

I avoid the Verizon default SMS. I switched the google messenger app for my default SMS. It works like a charms and real smooth

I typically install Textra right when I get a new phone but haven't felt the need yet except that I wish it had a dark mode which Textra has.
Another reason I have not installed 3rd party apps is that I wanted the phone to earn my trust on its own merit which it's done so far.

I updated the first post with the instructions on how I fixed it. I believe the combination of manually setting the APN as well as checking the box to "Activate Mobile Data" within Textra is what got it to work finally

I tried this, same everything. Does not work for me.
EDIT: Went back to using Hangouts. I disabled "Queue background data" in power management and I was able to download/receive my mms. Need to further test.

Had an opportunity with Wife's phone not receiving MMS, what I found was mine had "roaming MMS" checked hers did not, once I checked it hers worked.
Open messaging app, click the three dots in the upper right hand corner, settings, find "MMS roaming" and check it.

Thanks for this, I was having problems receiving mms. I tried your steps and my problems are gone. I was going to return the phone, so glad I don't have to now.

Can I set up Textra and still use Hangouts as my default? Or do I have to only use Textra?

I am not sure if that will work. I couldn't get any other app to work with my MMS settings other than textra. Other apps like Handcent allowed me to manually configure my APN, but none of them had the "Activate Mobile Data = CHECKED" setting, which I believe was key to getting it to work.

Can't send MMS w/o enabling data

Hey, all!
Ever since i've picked up the amaze I've been having a mms bug. Can't send any pics w/o enabling the data first. When i hit send, it does display the 4g icon (i'm on stock ics, but it happened on gb as well), but in a minute or two the error message comes in. Once i enable the data and hit retry, it goes out smooth.
I haven't updated to a new sim-card yet (wi-fi calling wouldn't work on gb with the old one, but ics doesn't seem to mind), not sure if that's something to look into.
Let me know if anyone has any ideas
Thank you!

Mms is a data-reliant service, you need data enabled to send or receive. Thus...I would not classify this as a bug...

was it hard to just say you can click on the "mobile network" icon to bring up the settings tab vs the switch, as i had no idea it worked like that now? thank you.
Update: still no dice with the correct settings. 4g icons shows up and then i get the delivery error message. once the data is forced enabled from the drop-down, it's golden. very strange.
Without data enabled, you will not receive nor be able to send out mms. No way around it.

i understand that, but when sending mms, there should be a trigger (which i can tell it tries to do when i see the 4g icon appear right after hitting "send", except for nothing happens) for the mms data to be enabled just for the time it takes to send a particular mms, otherwise, what's the point to always have data enabled? none of the smartphones i've had, had this happen (sensation included).

Go into your apn settings and delete it or simply reset to default, it should auto download the correct settings, no idea how to make mms work WITHOUT data being enabled, I find that odd to be honest, but if it worked on GB, then I think you guys should stick to GB, just to save yourself some dollars.
It has been a while russianbear.. Anywho, what previous people have said is true, if you actually have data DISABLED, it won't come on for anything(how would the phone decide you want it on for MMS, but not something else like browser?). I used to roll around with data disabled a bit when I had gingerbread, so I can confirm it was the exact same way - you had to enable data to send mms - if it was off, nothing data related would work.
If you aren't worried so much about how FAST is sends MMS, you could always set it to 2g only, then your phone simply couldn't send much data at all.. or an awesome feature built into ICS - go to system settings then click usage - turn on set data usage limit, and set it REALLY low - this will keep ANYTHING that uses background data from sending/receiving, but any app you use in the FOREGROUND will work like normal - open browser or youtube and they would work like normal..
I'm sure there's another trick that would work, but I need more coffee.. good to see you again russianbear.

hey, man good to see you as well.
i'm sure i'm not tripping when saying you don't actually need to physically enable the data connection for it to send mms (none of my prior devices needed to) i've downloaded go sms pro and it works like the stock app should - i don't need to enable anything to send mms now (all options in that app are stock also). not a deal-braker to me, but still strange.

LOL, that may be why I didn't have issues.. I hate the stock messaging app, so I always used gosms. I'm not sure why you would use that ugly HTC goodness anyways, lol. Good to have you back bro
After much time trying to have MMS working without the data connection being active, I found that putting only "mms" in the APN Type setting does the trick (don't forget to save the settings before exiting the APN settings screen). The problem is that the setting is not applied without RESTARTING the device! So, change the setting to "mms", save, and restart.
You need to have the "Data active" option ticked, but there will (should) be no data connection for internet.
PS: I did this in another device, not the HTC Amaze. But it probably also works for you guys.

i've tried mms only, but still nada. it's ok though, i like go sms app anyway
Actually I send MMS and the message leaves but the person who receives the MMS gets an empty MMS message.
After much playing around with the device, I discovered that inserting a picture using gallery or the explorer that comes with the Amaze are all fail.
The only way I'm able to successfully send messages is inserting the image using ROOT Explorer. When I send MMS the person no longer gets empty MMS messages.
Now I'm using the CapcomCE ROM and it happened on SpeedROM 7.5
I downloaded the Gallery ICS from market and its the same story.
So basically if I insert pictures to send through MMS I have to use the Root Explorer or else the MMS messages are sent empty.
Has anyone had a similar experience?

[Q] Group MMS CM10.1

My wife and I each have the Droid Incredible 4G LTE. I have done full wipe, clean install with several different nightlies, and both phones have the same problem, so I think it has to be a ROM problem, but I don't see other people in the fireball community experiencing the same problem.
Group MMS from certain iphone users cause "Unfortunately, messaging has stopped" when attempting to open the message. It is only certain iphone users, not all of them. I have tried different texting apps. Handcent just shows a white square from these iphone users.
I have flashed other Roms, such as stock and VIPER and the group MMS works perfectly.
Does anybody else have this issue, and is there any known way to fix it?

I had the same issue as well. But I uninstalled CM 10.1 because I just didn't like some of the problems. Mainly because I was having WiFi issues as well. But it was only certain iPhone users for me too. Other android users it worked fine. Though I never saw force closing with opening group MMS. The messages would just be blank or have some weird white square. Same with you?

I tried doing a full wipe and installing RC1 again and still get blank messages from most iPhone users in group messages. Any help from devs on this subject is appreciated.
I need some more information on this:
Does this only affect MMS messages?
Can you reproduce the issue every time from the same sender?
Can you reproduce the issue from any non-iPhone users?
Does this only affect incoming messages? (i.e. outgoing messages show both on this device and the receiving end)
Capture a logcat, noting the approximate line numbers where message was received
In Settings > About phone > Status, does your phone number show up under "My phone number" (do not report your number in this thread, just reply yes/no)

Odd texting issue on Fascinate w/ GeeWiz 4.2.2

So... I recently got a replacement used Fascinate for my original unit that had a shattered screen. It has GeeWiz 4.2.2 loaded on it and I really like it. Damn near perfect... except for one thing and I'm not even sure/don't think it's the phone/ROM.
My texting issue is related to MMS. I can send any text... short, extended/pages long, picture texts (MMS) and I can receive all except long texts. And it's only an issue with my wife. She can write a book. LOL After doing more testing with other people, it seems to be a thing with Pageplus and Verizon. My wife is on Pageplus. I'm on Verizon...for now. My son is also on Verizon and has the same issue. I had a friend who is also on Pageplus send me a long text and it failed too. If I have someone on Verizon send me a extended text (over 140 characters) and comes thru fine. Only Pageplus customers seem to have the issue and it's only to my phone. I can have my wife send a long text to a friend who on Verizon and it goes thru fine.
The failure is on the senders side too. The senders phone will says failed to send. I don't get anything on my end. This is only to my phone.
I've searched and haven't found but a couple of references to a similar problem and no solutions. One possible thing that I haven't followed up on yet is this.... This phone was on Pageplus. I activated it on Verizon. Verizon shows no issues on their end at all but I'm wondering if Pageplus still has something in their system from the previous owner with this ESN. It's only Pageplus people that have this issue sending texts to my phone. They can send to other Verizon phones. And this is only long/extended texts that are 140 characters or more. Short texts and picture texts work fine. Oh....and if the sender attaches a pic to the long text, I will receive it.
It really weird. Wondering if anyone has seen anything similar or has any ideas. My next step is to call Pageplus support to see if they can help. I was also going to re-activate my old phone to verify the problem goes away. I welcome any insights.
Mike
PS - Sorry this is my first post. Can't believe I've been on this board this long and haven't posted before but this is a daily stop for me for years now.

I thought that had more to do with outgoing texts than incoming but I will try it later and report back.
So I looked in the settings of stock texting app and it doesn't have the "convert long sms to mms" option but I'm running 8sms in Default mode, which basically just themes the stock app and adds a couple more setting/features....one of which IS "convert long sms to mms". It was doing this before I started using 8sms so it's not the app. I'll try the change and post back results.
I tried turning that option on but it had no effect. Open to other suggestions. Still need to call Page plus support yet too,

maybe try a different ROM to make sure it's not just an issue with GeeWiz? roll back to a stock ROM and see if that fixes anything... also use the right ROM, you know, eh03 for vzw devices, etc.
Or possibly try another texting app or even hangouts will do sms/mms...
It sounds like page plus is possibly not splitting the message into 2 sms or not converting a long sms to a mms unless it explicitly contains a picture,,,
I would think that is software settings
That also could potentially be the sender's messaging app not converting it to mms and/or not splitting the message into 2 sms.
I know you said there were multiple people sending you stuff,, to they both have the same app?
Let me try to clarify the scenario....
My phone is a Fascinate with Geewiz 4.2.2 ROM activated on Verizon (for now LOL).
I have several people on Pageplus that can't send me an extended text message, meaning a text message over 140 characters. One is an iPhone 4, one is a Fascinate on Superclean ROM, and the last is a Fascinate on Geewiz 2.9. If any of them try to send me a message that longer than 140 characters, it fails to send on THEIR end. I never see it. These same 3 people can send the exact same text that fails to other Verizon phones with no issue.
My phone was originally a Verizon phone that was then switched to Pageplus. When I got it, I put it back on Verizon.
It seems to me that this is an issue with Pageplus, almost like there's some information in their system still that sees my phone as inactive and refuses to send it. The texts fails on the senders end almost like they don't have service. I need to take a chunk of time and call Pageplus support and see if this is even a possibility. Regular texts and picture messages sent from those same phones DO make it thru. I can send all forms of SMS/MMS with no issues. It's only receiving and only from Pageplus customers. If a Verizon customer sends me an extended text, it comes thru no problem.
I would think if it's the ROM, the problem would be evident regardless of the carrier the message was sent from. How could a ROM single out a specific message from a specific carrier? I'm not saying it's possible but it seems like this is a system issue on Pageplus side.
Thanks for the suggestions. It helps validate the steps I've taken and my thought process to solve it.
Well, I spent about 2hrs on the phone between Pageplus and Verizon tech support. Each blamed the other for the issue but ultimately Verizon is looking into it. Made to Level 3 support for whatever that is worth. Supposed to get a call back after they pour thru whatever they have to look thru. We'll see. They all agree that if the phone can receive EMS texts (Verizons extended text message protocol), the phone itself can't distinguish between carriers. The settings for each are the same. Since Pageplus and Verizon use the same system/network, it SHOULD work and can't really be my device. It's something on one of their networks.
Oh... and nobody has ever heard of something like this ever happening....which gives me great confidence that it will get resolved... LOL
Latest... tech support has been less than helpful... SURPRISE! LOL
They said that my phone is rejecting the messages but can't explain how Verizon Extended messages get thru but not Pageplus...which uses the exact same system. Not sure what else to do than maybe try a different ROM to see if it really is Geewiz or not...or maybe swap a device on the account too.

Android OpenVPN connected no MMS

I am using the Google Play Nexus 5 on T-Mobile US.
I am running CyanogenMOD 11 Snapshot M9 hammerhead
Android 4.4.4
OpenVPN for Android
DD-WRT Router using the OpenVPN server
I currently have a phone and VPN connection as described above. It connects and works great. The issue I am having, and have searched xda and google for the answer, is that when the VPN is connected everything works fine, except MMS. The APN is correct, per T-Mobile's website. I can send and receive MMS without the VPN connected. The moment I connect to the VPN my MMS in and out fail. I have read on Cisco's website that android has something blocking MMS when connected to VPN.
So, my question is: Is there any way to remove this block or reroute only MMS traffic outside of the VPN? I do have Android Firewall installed, so iptables is usable to do this.
No one has anything for this?
Having the same issue here.
Sony Xperia Z3 on AT&T
Android 4.4.4
Has anyone ever found a solution/workaround for this? I had this problem on my Galaxy S4 on 5.0.1 and now I'm having the same issue on my S7 on Marshmallow. Thanks!

The only "solution" I found, but did not feel it was the true answer, was just a workaround. I noticed that when I am hooked to wifi as well MMS fail to send and to receive. I just have to turn it off and wait for the message than turn it back on. Sucks I know, but it works.

That's a bummer! My biggest problem is receiving messages. I don't get any notification that it's trying to receive a message so I don't even know one is trying to come in.

I do get these messages, but I am using a third party MMS/SMS client (ChompSMS) that tells me when it is trying to receive something.

I may have found a solution but I still need to do more testing. When looking through the settings of some messaging apps I've noticed some give you a "MMS Behavior" option. In Textra it says:
Code:
Try 'System' if legacy MMS isn't work (for example with Project Fi, VPNs, WiFi MMS, etc).
So I set it to System and so far it seems to be working fine while being connected to my VPN. If I change back to "Legacy" or to a different default messaging app without that option it seems like they stop coming through again.
So far I've only tested this with pictures messages and haven't had a chance to try group texts yet. ChompSMS has the option in there but I've only tested it with Textra. I'm using a Galaxy S7 on Verizon so I'm not sure if that affects anything either.
Well, I tested it in ChompSMS, but no luck.

I would bet this is because the MMS server only allows the carrier IP Range. If it's blocking over Wifi as well that would prove that it's not just VPN that is causing it. I would imagine you could receive MMS from anywhere if you have a way of getting your mobile/carrier IP address. (Some sort of proxy(?))

I haven't used these in a while, but when I did they both worked over wifi. Textra and 8SMS. See if installing either one helps, if not uninstall.
But beware, if your provider doesn't support MMS over wifi you won't be able to use it, here is the warning from 8sms on MMS settings:
MMS over Wifi
If your cellular network (ie. Sprint) supports mms over wifi, you can enable Settings » MMS Settings » MMS over Wifi.
If your cellular network does not support mms over wifi (or you are not sure), then DO NOT enable MMS over Wifi or mms will stop working.

I believe T-Mobile USA does support MMS over wifi

I had issues with having my VPN active and not getting SMS/MMS messages while connected. Went looking for an answer and found that there wasn't any one single solution for it so I thought I'd post what worked for me. FWIW I'm on T-Mobile USA with Android 6.0.1.
Within my VPN configuration I went to the 'Allowed Apps' tab and excluded my SMS/MMS programs and processes. Namely I made sure Textra, Messenger, and MmsService were all excluded from the VPN and this resolved my issue. After disconnecting and reconnecting the VPN my text messages are sent and received without issue.
Was a pain in the butt for me as I have tasker setup to bring my VPN to life whenever it's not connected to my home wifi network. Took me a day or two to notice that text messages weren't going anywhere while the VPN was active. Oddly enough being on my home wifi network along with wifi calling being active has never caused an issue with SMS/MMS not working, but having a VPN active did.
I have switched to the Nexus 6P and am running rooted stock 7.1.1 (beta). Still with T-Mobile. I still have issues with MMS on wifi and on VPN, but no issue with SMS. It is strange. Maybe it is time to ask T-Mobile.

My V30+ struggles with sending/receiving multiple recipient texts

I'm having an ongoing problem communicating via text with more than one recipient at one time. I am running Stock (rooted Oreo), have tried numerous texting apps (Message, Pulse, Signal, etc) If I copy two people, it sometimes takes forever to send out the text. And quite often when one of the recipients replies back, I do not see it or it arrives much much later, or they squirt onto my phone all at once. Am on T-Mo and use wifi calling. Any ideas? I use my phone for work, so solid communication is required with my tech out in the field.
I have used Messages (Google's replacement for the stock messaging app) and Hangouts for multiple-person texting for years with no issues. I didn't see you mentioned these, so I wanted to mention it. I'm on stock rooted VS996 on TotalWireless.
As mentioned, I have used Messages, Pulse, Signal , they all seem to suffer from this same issue. If I go in settings, and disable combine group texts, the individual ones get to recipients, but then that defeats the purpose of using multiple texts. The two people I most often text with use Apple phones, unsure if that is a factor. very frustrating when trying to work from home & run service department. I thought Google closed Hangouts?

Not yet. I use it every day, as does my wife.
Ahh, crapple... that's likely the problem. Crapple loves to do non-standard crap, and that may be issue you're facing. Their incompetence makes SMS group texting impossible (because they suck at using standards).
That said, apparently you may be able to force MMS on your Android, to work around their idiocy: https://joyofandroid.com/group-messaging-android/

Indeed Crapple. Checked out the link, but it seems that I already have these settings in place. (Messages and Pulse are the two I switch between) Trying Textra now. Thank you for posting this
Do your MMS work? I haven't had a video gif work in Messages in a year!
I can text gifs. I support our two service techs out in the field, and we text each other all day. So I text them both some info, or a question to answer or whatever. It may take up to a minute for the app to show my text has been sent. Then I don't hear anything back from either guy. So I retext hey did you see my earlier text? Then they will reply, yes, and I answered you. But I do not have any response. Then later on, suddenly it get several texts squirt thru all at once, minutes or hours later. They both have iPhones. Here at home, wifi calling is the only way for me to use my phone as we have horrible signal at the house.
Yes, MMS works for me in Messages just fine. I also get them on my work phone (Moto Z3) from iPhone users, too. No issues whatsoever...

I wonder what the heck is wrong with my service? Anyone on Verizon with the US99820h not getting MMS to animate? Mine literally just come in as blurry pictures and tapping it does nothing.
@christoophat: Do you have Battery Saver or Data Saver enabled? If so, turn them off.
But if you have poor cell signal at home (I am familiar with that predicament) then SMS (including MMS) will always be spotty.
You can get a Google Voice number and use that instead: It all goes through data (WiFi or Mobile data) for calls as well as messages. I'd do that in your case.
You'll have to give your coworkers the Google Voice number instead of your current mobile number. Behind the scenes you can (optionally) route incoming and/or outgoing calls through your mobile number instead of using data. But certainly at home just let it use data.
In the old days, you'd use the Hangouts app to do Google Voice messaging and calls. I still do. But today you're probably better off using the Google Voice app, which has everything built in.
Edit: I should have mentioned that you can also port your current number to Google Voice if you don't want to give your coworkers a different number. But that will terminate your current mobile carrier account. And it can sometimes take a day or two to go through.

Battery saver is always off. I set up a Google Voice number to try out with my techs to see if that does any better. Many thanks for your response. I am lucky to get one bar here at home (null zone)

A great benefit of Google Voice is that you can make/receive calls and send/receive messages on any number of devices, including right inside Gmail on your computer. I write most messages this way because I prefer a real keyboard and selecting/editing with a mouse. I also do a fair number of calls this way. My PC has a wired connection which means lower latency than WiFi.
We also have Ring Central phone app, but it's used mostly for client only communication, so I can keep personal phone number separate. But you can't do multiple texts to anyone outside Groups (people who also have RC on their phones), so that is limiting.
Hah, I didn't realize the Google Voice is a separate app now that I will use to text. Will try this out & see if it does a better job. Thanks again
