So my friend's stock s3 started randomly rebooting recently and just couldn't get to the home screen without many tries. And it got worse this morning as she had spent about an hour to no result. The problem is the phone would keep rebooting during the GT-I9300 screen.. Most of the time it wouldn't get to the Samsung boot animation.. If I charged it, the battery logo would be shown as loading instead of charging.. After trying the hard reboot combination a few times which didn't work, I noticed that I could see the battery with green bar every time I pressed the power button!
So I tried something silly.. I kept pressing the power button repeatedly during boot and surprisingly it booted up to the home screen. However, without being charged, the phone would still suffer from boot loops (at that moment we confirmed that the pressing power button repeatedly would 100% work) . As we were desperate to understand the problem, I got to know some apps that she installed recently and uninstalled them. These are the apps that she recently installed and later uninstalled:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=vStudio.Android.Camera360
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fourricegroup.mc
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.naturalmotion.clumsyninja
Guess what?! The bootloop has not happened till now! So the reason I'm writing this post is because of curiosity xD
1. How does pressing the power button repeatedly help the phone to boot up? If I stop pressing it before the locksreen, it would fail.
2. Can an app really cause a weird issue like this? Or is it just a coincidence that the phone magically got better after uninstalling the apps?
Hope to get some answer from you guys for learning purposes thanks in advance!
Sounds like your power button is faulty.

For some reason I can't shut my touchpad down. If I hold the power button down, not much happens until I release the button. Then the screen turns off. Tap it again and it's back.
Any ideas?
thats strange try a hard reset, hold the power button and the home button down for literally a minute or so or until it resets. it will reboot into moboot hopefully. you might have to do that and go back into webos to completely shut down. good luck
Thanks for the reply, I was just trying it when the battery ran out!
But I'll give it a go if the problem returns, thanks.
Ran into the same problem today. The power menu, along with various power/reboot widgets wouldn't work, but after about 20 seconds of holding home+power it worked and booted to moboot.
I had this happen to a coworker, after I had recently upgraded her to alpha3. I tried everything to repair it before deciding to start from scratch. The best thing to do is restart using the power and home buttons (hold them until reboot).
Then think about reinstalling.
Good luck!

I had this same issue today. I downloaded Quick Boot from the app store and it allowed me to restart. Worked great
just happened me too, it MAY have something to do with low battery, i noticed someone above had the problem with low battery. mine happens to be low too
also, i turned off lockscreen earlier, maybe that was related.
Heey i have a problem with my power button. Had this problem before but it was gone after one day. The problem is my powerbutton isnt functionaly like it has to be. It changes from time to time.
Sometimes it doesnt work at all when i push the powerbutton.
Sometimes it works slowly. And when i have pushed te button couple of times, i get a phone with screen on, off, on off etc. Like it has lag or something.
When my powerbutton wasnt working yesterday, I saw that the button was pushed the whole time. I mean when you push powerbutton and homebutton you make a screenshot. If i only pushed the homebutton it was making a screenshot.
This things change from time to time. Any one got any ideas????
Im not even sure if its my button that is failing or it has to do something with software.
btw i already tried reflashing rom and kernel with no result.
thx in advance
It's the button, not the software that is the problem. Try taking off the back cover and cleaning out whatever dirt/lint that could be under the button.
i tried that already but it doesnt seem to work. Looks like i have to go back to stock rom for warranty. Hope this is going to be possible since my powerbutton isnt working.
Last night I pulled my phone out of my pocket to answer a text, as soon as I unlocked it, the volume bar popped up, went from full volume to silent/vibrate and continued vibrating. I tried to do anything but volume down kept interrupting everything. Even opening random programs and what not. I pulled the batt and restarted, it sat at the droid screen with the white "rsd service loading" or whatever it is, and sat there for the rest of the night until the battery died.
I got it to start up and boot all the way into the OS. It acts normally until i press the back button or the volume buttons. It then goes into the haywire crazy vibrating mode. I can get it to stop sometimes by pressing the Home button. But as I type this its randomly vibrating on my desk.
You fellas think this is a hardware issue or software?
P.S. I tried getting into the boot menu and clearing the cache, but pressing the volume button just caused it to hang at the rsd load.
Ur not on cm7 huh? Our bootstrap is automatic on plug in while power off.
Cyanogenmod
No sir. All stock, no root. 2.3.4
I was rooted before, but had all sorts of lag problems. After going back to factory everything seemed to clear up. So thats where I've stayed.
I'm considering just using my insurance and getting a new one (hopefully an upgrade to a 3 or something) as my case is fairly worn.... But if I dont need to..........
Hello guys, I'll try to be as brieff as possible:
My cousin has a SGS3, which suddenly started showing the power options screen (when you long press power button). Now his phone restarts on its own every time. When you insert the battery, it turns on by itself. If you try to access download mode or recovery mode, it does it but restarts again. I read it may be the power button is not working properly, but I dissassembled the phone and the switch is works normally (it's not broken, either stuck). I read several solutions about clearing cache and stuff, but it just keeps restarting! Like if someone were pushing the powerbutton every time. Btw, he discovered he can turn the phone on and actually stop the phone from restarting if he continously presses the power button and menu button alternatively without stopping (which is useless). When he stops doing that, 3 secs later, it restarts again. Any suggestions?
It's a hardware fault, did you test the button with a meter?
If yes then something else is shorted, to power on when the battery is inserted.

Ah, so this is merely hardware. I did not test it, but now it seems clear something is wrong on the inside (which, unfortunately, I cannot help with). Thanks mate!
Hello all!
My Moto E is of lately causing a very weird problem. If I press the power button more than even 1.5 to 2 seconds (yeah, I measured it), the phone restarts. This problem was persistent when I had not rooted the phone, and even now after rooting with PA 4.6 beta5 ROM, the problem has become more grave. If I keep the button pressed even for half a second more after the Power Options are displayed, the phone restarts! I tried Factory Reset, Re-Flashing the ROM, but all in vain.
This is really a grave problem for me.
Please help.
Im too facing this randomly... I guess thats a hardware problem( mayb switch)...
Same problem here... Did everything I can... But all in vain....
Me too.....it used to randomly restart...and now i think the power button is stuck inside a little...
Its already reported in Official Motorola forum by many people here. Now i use volume key to wake up phone using Gravity box and double tap statusbar to sleep...

I used to have the same problem. Later I rooted the device and installed xposed framework. Still it rebooted randomly. I had dropped the phone a little while ago due to which the power button became a little loose. Afraid of breaking the power button, I started to wake up my device using volume buttons. Use GravityBox to do so if you have xposed installed. Else you can search for an app that does the same on Play Store(although these apps suck your battery heavily). After using the volume buttons to wake up my device, I noticed that my phone no longer restarts. If your phone still restarts after following these steps, use any different way to lock the device like 'double tap on Status Bar' (like I use).
Hope I helped friend.
me too!
i have been having this problem from quite a few days; it only exists when i install a new app and then when i delete it the random reboots will stop; i believe this is a bug in the kernel which is getting triggered by an app.
hope it can get fixed via software update, possibly by lollipop.
ps: never had a problem while on clean format (with no extra apps)
