Original Firmware and How to - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hi,
I've bought a used Xperia Z Ultra, that was rooted with dirty unicorn.
Found that the call function wasn;t working properly (screen went off when making/receiving calls)
Decided to flash the original official firmware, but not very sure what are the steps. And also having difficulties finding the US firmware.
Can someone please enlighten me?
Thanks a bunch in advance.

Research XPERIFIRM and FLASHTOOL.

If you want the real original thing, you can use the Sony PC Companion instead. It has easy explanations before each of the few steps you'll walk before you get the original firmware. You can go to the official Sony Z Ultra support web page and download it. :good:

Actually Sony Companion will not work on any device with an umlocked bootloader.
The bootloader must be re-locked to use PC Companion.
I literally just did this on Monday.

I don't believe it is possible to flash custom firmware unless the bootloader is unlocked.
The OP stated "Decided to flash the original official firmware" which leads me to believe the Bootloader is unlocked and running a custom rom.

OTA update to 6.1.A.2.45 for rooted Xperia S with unlocked bootloader

I have a rooted Xperia S with unlocked bootloader, by following instructions on this thread.
Today I received a notification about OTA update to 6.1.A.2.45 (40MB in size) and I was wondering if I can apply this update without loosing root. I really did search for an answer on the forum before making this post and couldn't find anything specific for my phone, but what I did found only confused me more, which is to be expected since I am a noob. Apparently it worked for some users of Xperia Play with unlocked bootloader, but on the other hand some users of Xperia Arc S say that bootloader should be locked when making an OTA update.
I would really appreciate any help from more experienced members, I'm new in Android and don't want to start by bricking my phone.
Thank you for your time and effort.
Boom
better dont, you will end up with a bricked device. NEVER accept OTA updates if your bootloader is unlocked.
Don't update with PCC when you're unlocked.
Wow, that was fast! Thank you guys.
hi, did you find how to update?

i also have an open bootloader although not root, but i tried updating using the phone's OTA and PCC and neither worked. I promptly realized it might just be the open bootloader which is keeping me from updating, so how do we manually update? if you have any procedures will highly appreciate anyone..... thanks in advance

You can find your regions FW. (firmware) and download it, after that download and install flashtool, and flash the .ftf file via flashtool and that is it.
thanks for the quick reply

i did a fast search and found this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31011440#post31011440
they have some firmwares there, but they seem to be full updates, because they are 300+mb while the update on my phone its only 40mb.
so should i just download the generic and proceed to flash?

Hmmm,
Slightly different scenario here.
I have a rooted xperia S with a locked bootloader and obviously want to preserve root.
Previous experience tells me that a PC update from SEUS does a full wipe of the phone and looses root however OTA updates usually preserve root. I was hoping somebody could clarify if this is still the case?
Thanks
if your bootloaders unlocked you cant update ota or via seus. it will just give an error about your device being modified

same question as you, i have a rogers xperia s with a stock uk rom, it's rooted but bootloader is still locked. Just want to make sure that i don't loose root, or the root method can still be applied after the update.

there is a rom somewhere in another forum i guess which already is updated and rooted. so you might want to just download that one and flash it. it has its own kernel and recovery.

I've not been on much recently at all so I could be wrong, but I'm sure it's been said that you can flash ROM such as the linked one when bootloader is locked and perhaps the pre-rooted one too. May need to search the thread.
Nothing out there that allows me to root my Xperia S on ICS without wiping my data though I think. One can wait... or dream. :[

Yeah having too wipe at this point is a bummer. If I'm going to wipe my phone ill wait for the ability to unlock my locked bootloader.
Problem with that is I will most likely have a new phone by then.

Just get the relocking ftf from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1134335
Flash it in flashtool and then flash a clean stock .587 ics rom. Then try updating with SEUS. It should update. Many people said that they have done this. I have tried it, and the tool didn't give me any error about modified software or anything. Good luck.

Relock the bootloader... And flash stock ftf then you can update officially.
PREDATOR95 ->->->->a.k.a. ->-> predatOr
Hmmm...there are actually a way around it...Sony has a beta version of flash tool that can flash stock firmware from sony website on unlock bootloader....that mean you dont have to relock your bootloader if you want to flash stock firmware....but since it's still in beta, our xperia lineup is not supported yet but you can request to add our xperia line up for next release....
you can have a look HERE or HERE...
Thanks for all the replies. The phone is still on standard sony firmware tho, just with an unlocked bootloader. Next try is relocking I guess.

And it worked, using iPusak's first link. Great!

If the firmware you want is available as an ftf, it will be easiest to flash with flashtool. Then no relocking or anything else.

[Q] Bootloader allow unlock:NO

Hi Ladies & Mentalmen
I have just bought my Sony Xperia Z2 from O2 and the issue I have is that the bootloader in the hidden menu is set to Bootloader allow unlock:NO. I had my network unlocked by O2 to accept all sims and was successful, so can anyone please help me to have it to Bootloader allow unlock:YES?
I have tried flashtool & sony official website but cannot proceed due to this situation...I tried contacting sony UK and they mentioned that I should report back to O2 and when I see O2 they refer me back to Sony
So any help would be highly appreciated

Simply put: you can't change that. You're bootloader is locked. I'm on Vodafone UK and mine is the same.
I would like to try flash a loader.sin from an FTF from a known unlocked bootloader, though it might be pointless.
I do hope someone manages to unlock the bootloader for the unlockable bootloaders.
Flashing the loader.sin only works sometimes
I dont recomend trying unless you want to risk bricking your device

[Q] upgrading firmware but unlocked bootloader

hi,
I started this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/help/upgrading-55-to-314-t2860394
but ran into an issue. Since I didn't get any updates on that thread, I thought I would make a post dedicated to the problem I'm running into.
basically while attempting to upgrade to .314 using PC Companion I get
The phone tablet contains modified software that cannot be updated
Sony Updated Engine failure (error 2003)

with some research it appears that this is because i unlocked my bootloader.
Questions:
is my conclusion correct? or is this because of something else?
if correct, what is the recommended course of action here? relock bootloader and update using companion PC or decrypt FTF files and flash using flashtool?
If i relock bootloader using flashtool, will it wipe my phone data?
I've found the firmware files on my computer (C:\ProgramData\Sony Mobile\Update Engine\db\13740270\blob_fs) If i decrypt these with flashtool and use them to update firmware, will it wipe my data?
Thanks
You can update via flashtool without looking data. Flash ftf file and check system only and uncheck wipe. Re- locking bootloader will wipe your phone. Your assumption is correct m8. You can't update your phone with pc companion because of your unlocked bootloader. Happy flashing m8

I'm also kinda paranoid so I just created my own FTF from official Sony update via Sony PC Companion using these instructions.
http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperi...eria/This-is-how-to-create-an-FTF/td-p/228703
Its takes a while but felt more comfortable than just some random dl.
here is the .314 i created.

attached is a screenshot of the flashtool interface
What do i want to check and what do i want to leve unchecked?
do you mean that all the check boxes under WIPE should be empty
and the only checkbox under EXCLUDE that should be checked is SYSTEM?
thanks

sweet. upgraded and rooted using "Easy Root Tool" (was super easy!) :good:
for others discovering this post i've attached a screenshot of what my flashmode tool looked like:
basically under WIPE make sure DATA is unchecked. you will notice that userdata.sin disappears from content list
under exclude make sure nothing is checked.
win.
@[w] Hey m8, glad to see everything went ok Now you are all set to go and mod to your heart's content:highfive: Thanks for posting the screen shot and explanation as a reference for noobs/Sh*tsung refugees to see how the Flashtool screen should look during upgrading. Question Lost IMEI after android 13 update [XQ-CT72]

After updating my xperia few months back, it lost both IMEI's and ability to see sim cards with that. Also the battery started to drain significantly faster.
Now I have unlocked bootloader and rooted it, hoping it would fix it, but it didn't help. ( I've used this guide for rooting https://www.droidwin.com/unlock-bootloader-and-root-sony-xperia-1-iv/) Xperia Companion did not work either, it would just give out an error everytime.
I would imagine getting to stock could solve this, but as I understood Sony don't want you to have a good life and there's no places to get old firmware for my model.
I'm really bad with all of this, so I would be really grateful for any help, to restore my phone from being a tablet.
Did you flashed another firmware? Like US firmware? Because if you did that doesn't work on ct72
Edit: Also companion won't work with unlock bootloader

what doesn't work on ct72?
Companion didn't work before I unlocked bootloader
also should I use newflasher to flash?
Update: tried flashing it with Newflasher and completely bricked it.
Sorry to hear the news. You should of contacted SONY for its warranty if the update was OTA. Unlocking the bootloader usually voids the warranty.

I did, but this model is not from region so they wouldn't help. I think there's still ways to fix it, but doubt I can do it alone without an extensive guide
Also does anyone know if there's ways to lock bootloader without access to fastboot?

Dang! I wonder if SONY will deny support for using an out of region device while working/living outside your native country or if they will say to contact the appropriate customer support link according to the device region.
Hope it can be fixed.
