[Q] Nook tablet 16Gb low performance - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Hello,
I have a rooted Nook Tablet 16 Gb with CM 10.2.1 and I have serious performance issues.
The speed is very low and apps frequently crash, the SD card (Sandisk) can be mounted but after a while is corrupted (I can reformat it and it looks healthy on PC scan, remounted but again after a while is corrupted), the battery life is very low and when reaching ~30% it shuts down.
I am surprised to see that many users are very happy with the Nook performance, this means that my sample has a problem.
What can I do to improve it? I flashed it and formatted everything several times without success, the same low speed right after a fresh install.
Is it possible that a bad battery affects also the overall performance? Can I check somehow if I have any other hardware error?
I don't know if I should buy a replacement battery or buy a new tablet.
Thank you.
LE: I checked again and in fact the current ROM is CM11 M12, which seems more stable than 10.2.1, but still slow.

[Q] Micro SD card power consumption

I still have about 2 GB of internal storage free but I also have some spare micro SD cards and I wonder if installing one can hurt my battery life. Google revealed that the card may drain like 1 mA continuously when idling. This means that the card alone will drain 1500 mA/h battery in about 2 months which is quite Ok and you should not probably care about that. Is this true, or having the card installed may visibly affect the battery life? Thanks.
I installed a 8GB card on my photon and I can't see any difference on my battery life due to having it.
All my pictures/videos go to that one

Nook on low battery gets crazy ...

Does your Nook go crazy when the battery gets around 15 percent? Mine will start opening and closing applications and then it will shuts down. You would think it would warn me ahead of time
I ran into this phenom several times, some with battery-level readings at even higher values in the 25-30% range.
I think part of the problem is the battery-level readings in many CM builds are not reliable: I've seen battery readings jumping as much as +/- 10 points immediately following an update to a different build -- hence there is a good chance the real battery level might not be where the reading says it is.
I thought that the accuracy on my build may be off. Guess the best think to do is put her on the charger at 20 percent

I don't think it's related to CyanogenMod. I recall getting this wonky battery behavior even on the original B&N operating system. I don't have the problem any more, but I've done so many tweaks to my Nook that I couldn't tell you definitively what did the trick. Mine will happily tick down to about 3% or so, then shut off calmly. You can try flashing one of the kernels that Demitrius has posted in the dev forum; that may help. I'm running his Nook on Fire/Showtime kernel with great success.
Of course, I do need to say that one of my tweaks was ripping out the old battery and replacing it (which happened about the same time last summer as flashing Nook on Fire, hence not being sure which fix did the trick). There are guides on YouTube to replace the battery, and you should be able to find a new battery for $30~$35 US. It's not technically challenging, but it is difficult -- everything inside that tablet is gummed up with adhesive, and you need to take great care to make sure you don't damage the case or the screen while you're pulling the old battery out.

I may just try the Fire/Showtime kernel. I'm not sure if I'm happy with 10.3.1. I've been having WIFI problems also since I've went to it.
Thanks

I agree that the problem of "NT going bonky at low battery" is independent of ROM version.
But false readings of "battery remaining capacity %" in some CM builds make the problem seem to occur at a higher battery level than actual.
Mine also started going crazy about a year ago when the battery got to around 17% left, this was on the original (rooted) B&N firmware, then about a month ago it would start going nuts when the battery was just below 90% full (still on B&N firmware).
I found that if the brightness was high or the CPU load was high then this made it worse, I used to use it a s portable wireless video player quite a bit and discovered I had to put the brightness to 50% or lower to try and stop it going nuts. Now it's so bad I leave it plugged into a power source all the time to use it, which has effectively killed its portability.
I have put CM 10.2.0 on it recently but that hasn't made the battery/touchscreen problem better or worse, except it can no longer read TF cards
Where did you get a replacement battery? That might solve the problem for me also.

It would seem that I also have this problem. I have rooted via the method at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439630 I haven't installed many apps so I don't think that is the problem. I only rooted it last week, spring pad went down and Evernote only supports Nook HD for some odd reason from the B&N App store. I installed Evernote, Firefox, Tor, and the Tor browser from Google play/market. It only started doing this last night, at first I thought perhaps it was a virus or something. Then I realized it happened when the power got around 23%.
It just started doing this last night. The only other thing I did was update the NTHiddenSettings app via Google Play. Thinking that was it, I reinstalled the previous version but nope no difference. Other than what I have listed this NT is stock.
I did find a great battery removal video (and place to get them) at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3F0glSyvj2s I hope that is not the case as I really don't want to buy/replace the battery. But if need be...ok. I really like this tablet and it does all I need.
If anyone has fixed this (besides a battery replacement) please do post. Thanks.
Oh I just found on another forum someone posting about battery calibration https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nema.batterycalibration&feature=search_result which sounds like it may be our problem. Something messed up the calibration would certainly make our NT's go crazy. Anyone ever try this?
UPDATE:
After digging around I found that the battery calibration app in question doesn't do much other than delete a file that is deleted anyway as soon as you plug in your tablet and charge it. So that is not it.
And on another note with the "spare parts" app the 'battery history' option errors with "the application spare parts ) process.com.andriod.spare_parts_ has topped unexpectedly, please try again." Is this normal? It is version 2.3.7. NT Hidden Settings app application settings/battery use works fine and shows the amount of everything that has used the battery since it was last plugged in/charged. Could this error be a sign of the problem with the phantom touches and inaccurate battery display? And if it is a sign of something broken, what and how do I fix it?
This problem recently got a lot worse on my (nearly 3-year old) NT -- random opening/switching of app screens now occur at battery readings in the 65-85% range (used to be ~25%).
I contemplated replacing its battery, but with the cost of the replacement battery ranging from $22 (on eBay) to $40 (from New Power 99) and the risk of messing things up during the replacement process, I opted to simply trade in the NT for $30 of credit (trade-in offer valid till 01/17/15, see http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/tra...FILIATES-_-Linkshare-_-TnL5HPStwNw-_-10:1&r=1) toward a new Samsung Tab 4 Nook on-sale (in-store, ending today 12/21) for $129.
FWIW, when restoring the NT to stock ROM (for the purpose of the trade-in inspection at the store), I noticed that the battery reading in stock ROM is ~20 points below the reading shortly before while running CM.

New XTZ == Fast battery drain (5% in 5 min)?

Hi all,
I just purchased a Xperia Tablet Z 32 Gig Wifi (SGP312) and am seeing an amazing amount of battery drain. I was using the kindle app and dropped about 5% battery power (96% to 91%) in about 5 minutes. Being that I just purchased this tablet from Amazon I would like to know if this is normal or if this sounds like it could be a hardware issue? Also, does someone know if the custom roms (e.g. CM10 or CM11) have better battery life?
Thanks!
Dave
Ps. I am running build number 10.4.1.B.0.109

i have a similar problem with the 16gb...which i didnt buy brand new. But i did get the updae from 4.2 to 4.3 when i bought it, and i believe its a
dirty update issue. Im going to wipe/restore it to make sure im running clean...usually fixes things on the Galaxy s3/s4 devices..........
the battery in this tablet is quite a bit smaller than other tablets, the galaxy 10.1 2014 has a 8200mah battery and ours has a 6000mah battery, i bought this tablet having an idea that the battery would be poor and thats what i got.
I generally leave mine plugged in most nights while im on it or it will just run out and not last a whole night.
I have always just seen this as normal for this tablet though.
reflash the firmware. Normally 2% battery loss overnight can be considered great, not 5% in 5 minutes.
Sorry if this doesn't help you but this is what I do and I have at least 7h usage on mine now from a single charge.
First up, if you are rooted try Greenify from app store, it saved a lot for me just doing all none system apps that don't require notifications or autoupdating (widgets).
Next up, drop your screen brightness, I regularly run mine on lowest setting. This isn't an issue as much if you don't mind removing Sony shatter protection on screen as it slightly darkens the screen, please be aware this is designed to stop your screen shattering if you drop it so do it at your own risk. I also use a generic matte screen protector to stop finger prints so you may not have this issue.
If you use custom ROM, most have performance settings, so if you don't use tablet for heavy gaming, you can save a lot of battery here by using power save settings and conservative processor governor. Again be careful with this if you are unsure, don't do it.
Lastly, most modern tablets etc have a fairly significant improvement the more you use it. Always try to run your battery to 10% or under before fully charging, however don't run it flat because you will most likely have issues.
Clean master is another app that helps me too. I turn off all settings except auto clean when screen turned off. Then go to memory boost and hold any apps you need running without being closed and press ignore.
Hope this helps.

Lagging and battery drain largely solved

I got the device on 15/11 and it's very frustrating that the device stutters a lot and battery drains fast. Updated the device and tried turned off most things i don't need but still can't fix the problem. Compared to the nexus 5 on lollipop i have, the phone is much more responsive, and the only setting different is that the phone does not have encryption. So i tried erasing everything and remove encryption, now the tab performs much better in terms of battery life and speed. This is especially obvious when browsing with chrome. Everything stock except rooted. Can others who still have this problem try and confirm the results?
Nope, no encryption- still not great performance. Likely just rebooting your tablet would have given you the same results. I would bet if you start doing the same things for a while, let ram fill up, CPU start getting hot and throttling, your issues will come right back.
Possible, but so far I have used for 1 whole day and still it's very responsive. Previously I have rebooted the device and the problem comes back in a few hours. If it's not encryption, perhaps it's the factory reset which works?

Very possible, clearing cache and rebooting. I'm not saying unencrypting does nothing at all, and it certainly doesn't HURT performance(besides in database and sqlite-encrypted tablets seem to do better at these actions). But I've had 3 nexus 9's, all without encryption and encrypted, and battery is bad either way. It hasn't gotten better when not encrypted on any of the 3- so its not device specific. Performance seems to be close either way, with a majority of the time being smooth(with occasional small stutters and lag), and then stints of horrible lag, stutters and redraws. The nexus 9 I have now has been running with no encryption for over a week, and I've certainly still had these performance problems and pretty horrible battery life while web browsing.

[Q] System process - high cpu load

Hello everyone!
I don't know if this is posted in the right thread, but here we go!
I recently rooted my M8 and installed Cyanogenmod 12 (cm-12-20141216-UNOFFICIAL-m8). It runs smooth and I'm pleased overall. I have found some bugs here and there but that's to be expected at this stage. But the one thing that's bugging me is that the battery is getting drained by system process.
It says... Process: System - CPU load 50%
In settings - battery it says "Miscellaneous" at 60%
any ideas? I read some other people that runs the same build and they have 5-6 hours OST.
Ive tried with factory reset and reinstalled cyanogenmod but no luck.
I would appreciate some pointers.. thanks!
What screen-on time are you getting? Although, in any case battery life is often a function of how you individually use your phone, as well as network reception in your area (worse signal causes faster battery drain).
I don't know how CM12 is reporting battery usage (every ROM will report usage a bit differently). But seeing as aside from the screen, the CPU is doing all the work, I don't see this as being too unusual.
