[Q] notifications issue with GCM - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
Im having issue after rooting my phone and installed Xposed. Im no longer receiving push notifications that used GCM (google cloud messaging).
As work around someone suggested to install freedom apk and that worked for me. But i really cant relay on it since some apps will not work by that. I need permanent fix and keep using roit and Xposed and receiving all gcm notifications. I believe its related to etc/hosts file.

[Q] - How can I fix Lollipop notification bug

Ever since lollipop came out my phone no longer gives me instant notifications. Often times I will receive them an hour after I should have. Generally, the notifications that are lagging are emails from gmail app and messages from the meetup app among others. After the 5.0 update came out I've read numerous posts online about this issue and that turning off wifi connection will make the notifications push through just fine. That worked for awhile, but with the recent update to 23c(i think) not even that works.
I rooted my phone in hopes to fine a kitkat rom to use, as it was lollipop that effectively ruined the use of my phone. Though I've also noticed that some of the lollipop roms (skydragon) claim to fix the issue by disabling IPv6, yet skydragon somehow disabled push notifications all together. So my question is, how do I fix this notification issue. Is there an app/script i can install to fix it? Or is there a good rom I can use that will work? Thanks.
This may not be strictly related to Lollipop. On May 29, I received the following eMail from Google:
Starting on June 27th, 2015, SMS notifications from Google Calendar will no longer be sent. SMS notifications launched before smartphones were available. Now, in a world with smartphones and notifications, you can get richer, more reliable experience on your mobile device, even offline.
To receive notifications on your smartphone, either configure the calendar app that came with your device or install Google Calendar for Android or iPhone. For more information on how to configure notification defaults, check out the Help Center.

This bug was fixed with the 24b update. And yes @DeanGibson it is related to the 23c lollipop update.

No push notifications

Ok... I'm desperate. I hope someone can fix my issue. I don't receive ANY push notifications from certain messaging/texting apps... Like for instance: Hangouts. Also, I've just installed discord (voice and messaging app) , and nothing. Which confused me even more because it's only ever just been a hangouts/google problem. They only work if I open the app.. Then it just appears as normal, but what's the point of that? I've noticed this only happens for chat apps. Also that doesn't work: AndChat (irc app)
I'm assuming this only applies to messaging/texting apps becsuse every other app works fine.
So I finally started trying to figure this out because it's really bugging me, so I download the app push notification tester (which failed) as well as a app named PNF... Which relayed this information: received: com.google.android.talk CANCELLED / discord.com CANCELLED when I've had someone send me a message on any of these apps.
Also of note: I've tried many texting apps and practically none worked except for kik and steam which I did receive push notifications for properly.
Anyway... I'm lost and I hope someone can help me with this issue. Otherwise, my device works perfectly.
I'm running rooted fire hd 6 dev preview 5.1 and all correct versions of apps like Google play services and any others as far as I know.
Thanks and pleeease help
P. S. I just noticed chrome beta is saying CANCELLED as well for whatever reason.

Messenger and notifications

Hello all,
I have one problem. I dont to get notifications from facebook messenger (beta), but Greenify decides that I won't. I have disabled greenify for it. I have root, Xposed module installed and I enabled Low hibernation which might enable push GCM but if I turn it off, turn on that second, more powerful hibernaton mode, it doesn't do anything. Even I have bought donation package but I still cannot get notifications from it.
This is the only app which is problematic. Whatsapp etc. works like a charm.
Would you help me please?

The advice of the Dev is, not to greenify the IM type apps if you rely on them.
I had canceled messenger from being greenified and then I restarted apps. Then it starts to push notifications.
Anyway, thank you.

Gmail/Hangouts/Groupme/etc failing to receive push notifications

Hi all,
I'm running a custom rom on a Huawei H1611 Ascent XT with only addition modification being Magisk V12 (I've tried posting this question in it's thread, but so far no luck https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/rom-ascend-xt-nexusxt-b160-t3597766 ). The rom replaced lots of stock apps with google apps so maybe something is going on there.
Basically, gmail, hangouts, and groupme all fail to notify me of a new email or message, especially when the phone is off. As a test, if someone sends me a hangout message, I won't receive it until I open the hangouts app.
I've gone through all the notification settings, the battery optimization settings (ensure gmail, play services, hangouts all set to no battery optimize), and can't find ANYTHING to cause this issue. Also done multiple wipes and reflashes.
I feel like one time I read about a blocked wakelock causing an issue similar to this but I can't recall it. Does anyone know what could cause an issue like this and how can I figure out what is going on? Driving my crazy...
thanks!

Netshare tethering

Hello,
I recently got my young daughter a used Verizon Galaxy S7 and am running the latest oreo image on it. It will not have any carrier plan attached to it for the foreseeable future. She is getting her free phone number through Google hangouts and google voice.
I am using one of those apps on my own phone that creates a proxy with wifi-direct to provide a hotspot that my carrier either does not see or does not enforce limits upon. We have been happy to use it within the limitations that it does have.
I am trying to figure out a workaround for google hangouts sms/mms notifications. These notifications appear normally when the app is in the foreground, but not when it is in the background. On a regular (no proxy hack) wifi network, things work as expected and notifications appear whether the app is in foreground or not. I am not a network guy, but my guess is that proxies don't work with push notifications?
...Is there some way to keep it running on the phone in the background? Perhaps a widget the keeps hangouts active? Maybe a script I can run that will make hangouts check in every five minutes or so?
Thanks for your time!
