recovering data from internal memory - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

few days ago I installed the CM 12 in s3 of a friend of mine yesterday and asked me to install the stock firmware because he had problems, I download firmware and installed with odin but on reboot I saw that all the files are lost, how can I recover them?

Hmm, don't know this will work with nand but you could try to connect this phone to PC and check with Recuva or similar application to restore formated data. Or you can make a raw dump of internal storage and search for files marks inside.
It is long term play unless you will find a proper tool to o that.
Also I don't remember wiping procedure is to remove files stamps or overwriting with zeros. In second scenario you will not be able to recover anything in home yourself.
I think the easiest way will be to make a dd dump via add and work on the created image. But you need a basic knowledge to install adb in PC and use terminal commands. Try with Recuva first.

[Q] Make a backup before flashing

Hi.
Last time I flashed a new firmware I made a backup of the phone. The problem was that I couldn't get it back after flashing.
So, my question is:
How on earth do I make a backup of everything before flashing. And how do I restore it afterwords.
Thanks in advance
Pemell
Hi pemell,
How did you generate the backup? Yesterday I generated a full backup of my Lumia 800 and the command that I executed was the following:
sudo dd if=/dev/sdX of=~/fulldump
This generated the fulldump file (16GB).
David Ortega.
I'd suggest that you back up in two ways: First in Zune and then via the DD. I would suggest that you create a separate backup of each partition in order to make reflashing easier.
davortsan - I didn't update by cab sending so aren't that familiar with these commands. I guess of course I could find out by some testing and reading.
chrisKringel - two partitions? are there two partitions? If the phone had a memorycard I would get where you're going.
kind of strange there are no step by step guide of how to backup pre flashing and restore afterwords. I'm too much of a noob to write it myself.

Let's take a computer for example. When you open up explorer on said computer you see multiple HDD-icons. One for the system, one for Music and Pictures and one for games. This doesn't necessarily mean that this computer has 3 physical HDDs as you can split up a storage device into multiple logical partitions. The computer can easily have only one physical drive.
Same thing goes for our Lumias. They have (as far as I know) only one NAND chip that stores all the data. But this chip is split up into 9 logical partitions, containing the bootloader, serialnumber, mac etc. (head over to the Development Section, a few of the early posts discuss the partitions). When you have a Linux at your hands you can use the DD command to dump every single partition. Of course you should only touch the 9th partition later but better safe than sorry. In order to backup with Linux you have to either run the full dump command from above. When you want to reflash the fulldump every single partitions gets reset to the state from when you created the backup. I never tried this but I would not advise to reflash all partitions. I'd rather advise you to create a single backup of each partition. Charge your phone and enter QUALCOMM mode. Plug it into your Linux and run the commands
Code:
dd if=/dev/sdX1 of=backup1.bin
Code:
dd if=/dev/sdX2 of=backup2.bin
... repeat for every number until the following ...
Code:
dd if=/dev/sdX9 of=backup9.bin
X refers to the mount point where your device is connected. You can use fdisk -l to get the right letter. When you need to restore your device you need only partition 9, but better safe than sorry You never know, these additional backups might come in handy sometime...
What do you intend to do? Do you want to have your Apps back after you flashed your phone?
Thanks Chris, a perfect post!
I know that most of the information on the phone comes from the cloud, but some doesn't. For exemple I use the call history a lot and I would like to keep all of my sms+mms. Reinstalling all the apps is, of course, something i would prefer not to do at every update (even though they don't come that often).
I'll look into the information you posted and see what I can come up with. / Pemell

Keeping the specified data like messages, settings and call history during a reflash is not easily possible. When you reflash (or flash) your phone all the data gets wiped and completely new data is written to the phone. There are some homebrew solutions for texts in the WP7 Dev & Hacking boards that might work, depending on your current ROM. Another thing is that the flash you do when using the methods described in this board is different from a flash in a Nokia Care Point. The official flashing flashes in a certain way that the first boot writes all the phone data in the registry, like the WP activation key and some other serials. This won't happen when you write the file in Qualcomm mode. This could cause problems when you try to restore a backup from Zune. I'm not really sure about this, though.
Another thing to note is that some ROMs are not updateable through Zune, on these ROMs you have to do a manual update or a new flash to get up to date.
I would suggest that you wait a few weeks if you can. Maybe Microsoft will announce a cloud backup for text messages when the introduce WP8. A official backup would be the safest way.
Thanks Chris, a good advice.

[Q] Recover data from a broken OS

Hi all.
I've just installed some app that broke down my S3 stock OS.
The OS was rooted, and I gave the crappy app superuser access...
It was supposed to change the DPI setting, but now it's boot-looping over the Samsung logo.
Now I'd like to recover my data, photos and stuff...
CWM Recovery 5.5.0.4 is installed.
I can start a backup, but it won't complete since I don't have a large enough SD card at hand (it's a 32 GB SGS3 with a bunch of large videos...).
I don't care about the movies, just the photos, but there's no option for a selective backup...
I also tried updating CWM to a more recent release with Odin (downloaded .img and tar'ed it...), but it won't go further than SetupConnection.
I've not tried a factory reset of anything else yet...
Is there a way I can still recover my data, or should I just get over it and try to flash the whole thing back with Odin?
Thanks for your help.
Adb backup?
maybe reinstalling the ROM can fix it ?
The other thing you can try is adb pull /build prop, edit LCD density back to 320 and adb push it back
Thanks for your answers.
adb looks like the way to go, but I never managed to get it working on my computers.
"adb devices" won't list any, "adb shell" returns "error: device not found".
USB debugging was enabled in the OS.
Is the phone supposed to be in recovery mode or download mode? None works... (Also tried with the OS running before it started crashing)
Is there a setup guide somewhere?
Actually, working with Android on Windows (XP x64) has been a total nightmare so far.
On my main computer, Device Manager loops forever on device detection / driver installation, and successive driver installation/uninstallation/reinstallation mangled WMP10 completely (and since it's tied to Windows, I can't reinstall it).
On other computers, driver installation went fine, I hardly managed to copy movies to the phone through MTP / WMP, and never managed to copy anything back.
I only ever managed to move files over wifi, but that's at wifi speed, not USB2 speed...
And now that I gave Kies a try (stayed away from it so far), it keeps eating 100% CPU whenever I run it.
I had that adb problem then I installed android command centre, and bam, it worked! Will try and find link for you....brb
Finally managed to run adb on the computer with Kies installed.
I'll look into this.
Here go
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36671130
Can't use adb pull/push anymore: in a previous attempt to reduce the nandroid backup size, I formated the system and cache partitions.
Then I managed to run a full backup with CWM Recovery, but can't find my files in there.
The backup files only contains application data, but the sdcard folder is totally missing.
Well, it appears the problem indeed was in build.prop.
My backup has 2 files: build.prop.bak and buid.prop.temp.
.bak has the old density, .temp has the new value.
Somehow the app failed to rename build.prop.temp to build.prop, and made the system unbootable.
adb backup won't work either: it's waiting for a confirmation on the phone, and doesn't seem to work in recovery mode.
Now browsing /data/media with adb shell !
I had to mount /data manually (in recovery), I guess the same is true for a recovery backup, and that's why I couldn't find my files.
Think I'll manage to get it all back now.
Thanks a lot slaphead20.
I was just about to wipe away all these family pictures!

[Q]

Hi, Because of the issue I described below. I need to have a custom recovery to have acces to the internal memory from the recovery menu.
Currently my phone is not rooted. If I understand all correct I need to flash a recovery like Philz.
Will this affect the data which is now stored on my phone? This since that's my main goal, regain access to that data and copy it. If flashing my phone would erase this, there is no need for me to flash it at all.
All i need is access to the internal SD memory.
Thanks for any replies

I have a replacement phone, so would like to transfer some data from the internal SD memory to an external SD card. Problem is... the phone is not powered on long enough to do this!
I tried to clear the cache, also booted in safe mode (also shuts down in safe mode).
My only concern is to get some data from the internal SD memory. Any suggestions for a workaround?
I've so far followed these instructions:
Pre requisite is having adb "installed" on your windows PC. Download THIS file and follow the instructions in the readme.
You need to observe the following. For android 4.1.x and earlier, /data/media for android 4.2.x and newer, /data/media/0 - I will assume 4.2.2 for this guide,.
1) Boot into recovery, connect usb and go to "mounts and storage". Toggle the "mount data" options to mount these partitions. Tip, when mounted, the option then becomes "unmount data"
2) Open "cmd" in Windows and type the below code, which will copy all your data to a folder called sdcard on your windows desktop
Code: adb pull /data/media/0/ c:\users\rootsu\desktop\sdcard
Also note, this assumes you have windows vista or newer. Also, it assumes your windows username is rootsu.
That's it, simple.

Errors while downloading from internal memory
Hi,
I'm trying to get access to the internal memory of my Sansung Galaxy S4 GT-i9300. This since the phone seems to be in some sort of bootloop. Before going back to factory setting i want to secure all data which is stored on the phone. Mainly my whatsapp history.
I have rooted my phone and installed Philz as custom recovery. I have downloaded the latest drivers for my phone and installed adb on my win7-64 client (dutch installation).
Now in a shell I run:
pull adb /data/media c:\gebruikers\me\ff
I get the following error:
cannot create directory c:]gebruikers\me\ff\Samsung/Music/etc... : No such file or directory
Can anyone help me to point out what I'm doing wrong here?

Can I have a screenshot of the error please?
Also, have you read:
General > Sticky roll-up thread > S3 storage (data recovery)?
I have laid out the adb commands fully here.
Please can you use proper thread titles?
HI,
Since I'm a new user i cannot post links yet, so i've put a screenshot here postimg.org/image/ngflqe3yt
I did read: General > Sticky roll-up thread > S3 storage (data recovery)?
I was a great help and pushed me approx. 90% on my way. Now i'm stuck on the last part.
thanks again!
Does the folder "ff" exist?
the directory ff is existing. However the subfolder Samsung was not. So i now created this and ran the same command again. And... it's copying all data from my mobile!!!
Now i can go back to factory settings or try a custom ROM since i'm not that happy with touchwizz.
Just awesum! I thank you for this forum and the help provided.

Oh ok. Thats good. Its odd you had to create samsung though but never mind. The weird thing was how after samsung, the \ turned to /
The Samsung folder justy contains some sample music & video.
I could have seen this myself, guess it just got a bit late yesturday.
Anyway, great help. I will now see if i can bring my S3 back to live or turn it in for repair.

[Q] GT-I9300 factory reset itself(salvage data)

So my gf's phone factory reset itself. She turned it on in the morning and it was a clean phone, asking for google data, clean reset, nothing but stock on there. She lost all her pictures(which is the end of the world for her), apps, everything.
I plugged the phone to the PC and it shows 5Gb free of 11.3GB. Perhaps that means the data is still there? The internal memory has all the stock folders(android, dcm, notifications, etc.) but nothing is in there. Is there anyway I can perhaps save data?
This has been asked many, many times -I've not heard a single success.
You can dump the whole 16Gb data partition to your pc using ADB, then use a date mining program on your pc to search for file fragments. It's like trying to unscramble eggs so you're unlikely to recover much.
Google xda adb partition dump s3 for the guide on how.

Well I'm glad to be the first who succeded. The things I did was install Philz TWRP with Odin. Made a backup of data partition. Used this command "type data.ext4.tar.a data.ext4.tar.b data.ext4.tar.c data.ext4.tar.d data.ext4.tar.e data.ext4.tar.f >> data.ext4.tar" to join the cwm tars into one tar. Then I used WinRAR to extract the archive. I just searched with explorer for all ".jpg" and ".mp4" then copied them to a new folder.
All the "lost" files were in the Lost.Dir folder. There was thousands of them though, but like I said, searching for extensions makes it easier. I managed to save all my(her) files.

[Android 7.0][Nougat] Recovering files/pictures after factory reset...Is it possible?

Hi,
Ok, so... I think this is going to be more a guide than a question, but I guess it might come in handy for those after me.
I've a Huawei P9 (EVA-L09) which had some photos deleted. Then, I also wiped the whole system via factory reset. Is there any reasonable way to recover said photos?
I've been reading and trying a few things all week. A few of the unsuccessful solutions & problems I've ran into:
One possible approach is to connect the phone as a USB mass storage device to the PC. Then, any recover software on your PC (e.g.: recuva) can see the device as a drive letter (C:\, D:\, E:\, F:\...) and try to undelete the pictures. I tried this, but the USB mass storage connection option is not there anymore. Seems like Android 7.0 doesn't include it at all. I've rooted the phone. Couldn't make this mass storage thing to work in any way.
For USB mass storage, I even tried UMS Enabler. Didn't work on my device: "Device Not Supported - No Memory Card support or VoId Blocks found.!"
Of course, I also tried the classic Android recovery apps like:
Asoftech Data Recovery
EaseUS MobiSaver for Android
FonePaw Android Data Recovery
Yolisoft Android Data Recovery (this one was detected as some kind of malware by my AV software, so I didn't even run it)
None of them worked/found anything. Only #3 really worked (the others didn't detect the device or didn't accept it as rooted) and didn't really seem to scan the whole partition. It just tried to find deleted pics on the current Android instance after 10 seconds of searching (there's no way to know what's under the hood).
Then, I tried the weird method of "copy your whole partition to your PC as an image and run the recovery software on the image". (link 1, link 2, link 3 (last section). Update: Link 4 (better explained)). Couldn't really make it work. The tutorials are a bit confusing and some of the commands simply don't work/aren't available. Link 1 explains that this method doesn't work anymore on newer phones (Android >4.3)
So... Any help here? Does anyone know of a proper method to recover deleted stuff from an Android phone once it's been wiped? I'm very happy to test any new reasonable methods and report my findings
