I have a problem with battery on my Samsung Galaxy S3. Let me tell You my story.
After buying my brand-new phone the battery life was quite ok, I could be using (games, music, internet) my phone for almost all day and I was charging it every night. After two years of using, I rooted my phone and installed CyanogenMod 11. Then the problem appeared - after some time the screen was flickering and device was turning off. I was really confused, so I changed my rom to another, then another, another etc. Then I saw my battery is swollen. I bought brand new, original battery and used CM12 for maybe one month. I changed cause of battery, about 3-4 hours. Now I'm using Android Revolution ROM which is modified stock ROM, but has improved RAM use etc. Now my battery life is much better, but it can not afford more than few hours without battery saving mode on, or 8-10 hours with battery saving on. Here You can see a screenshot from my phone (I would post this but spam setting don't allow me)...
Is it normal? I thought battery life on my phone was better. I haven't made any battery calibration. Should I try this out (cleaning battery stats)?

There is no normal for battery life, a rough guide is 5hrs screen on time from one battery is good. Unless you run battery stats you won't know what the problem is.
It all depends on how you use your phone, I use mine completely differently.
When S3 was my primary phone and I used him extremely hard than battery needed to be charged every day. Now, when I'm using him occasionally battery remains operational even a 5 days.
It is not normal in daily use to charge every couple of hours especially if battery is brand new. Of course there can be power leak on IC chip due to overheating in past but usually apps and wakeloks respond for quicker than normal discharge.
Maybe there is an app in your play store shelf which drains battery juice. Try to flash any firmware you like but do not restore your apps. Try using your phone per one day and check how it goes.
Meanwhile you can install cpu spy to check deep sleep state. Also an app for wakeloks diagnostic, ie gsam or better battery stats.

couple weeks ago, i pulled my battery out when it was at 81% started it back right away and it was 45%, did it again today, it went from 71% down to 29%, my battery reading is tripping, I noticed. MY BATTERY IS HORRID, i lose 1% power per min on the lowest screen brightness display setting, could this have anything to do with this?
side note:
using my battery. battery stats says that my screen is causing 99% drainage.
my buddy battery: my screen is 80% drainage.
bad battery??? it still drains really quick with my buddy's battery, but DOES perform better. but not by much...
another thing, lol..... charging differs. sometimes it can charge like 10% every 10 minutes, and sometimes 30min for 10%.....its just weird. and my phone doesn't last me longer than 10 hours full charge, minimal use.
You may want to look at your battery health under the battery information menu.
Also to better understand and provide support we need to knock out a few things.
What is your current set up? ( rom,kernel, etc)
Have you done a battery calibration at all?
Have you run things like cpu spy to see what apps could be at fault?
All of this can give the community a better picture of what may be going on
Also I pull my battery alot because of testing and sleeps of death and I see very good battery life still. Atm 15 hours @ 72% and I am far from conservative.

kernel is the community TSM, battery still was wierd in stock rom, sc 2.9.2, and others.
battery health is good according to spare parts at 3850mv.
currently charging its been at 16% for 10 mins.....

Just FYI, you don't have to do a battery pull when you get SOD. Just hold the volume up and power buttons until you see the samsung logo, then let go. This is a hard reboot of your phone. That will save you battery a little bit as you won't be pulling it as much.
I have a extended battery. I usually get 2 days use on a charge. about a week ago I cannot make it thru a day. The battery is only about 6 weeks old. I tried another battery and same thing. I use task killer and app cleaner and have restarted several times. When I look in battery usage is shows the Android OS using 24% Display 26% and phone idle 24%. I did update all my app and this seemed to help just a little. Anyone have any suggestions before I return my extended battery or do a factory reset. tks in advance.
have you tried draining the phone completely till it shuts off, then plugging it in and letting it charge to 100% with the phone powered down?
Battery instructions say NOT to every let battery drain to 0. So not sure I should try that.

That is about the life that I get on mine on a bad day. Now that you have had the phone for a while, more than likely, your battery has not changed but you have installed more apps which are draining you battery even faster. You shouldn't use task killers either, they screw with the roms built in memory management. However, if you must, then use "Task Manager" the built in stock task manager to end apps. Also i agree that you should completely discharge your battery and then let it recharge completely without turning it on and without using it.

This is not true. The phone has its own power management. When you reach 0%, the battery has still at least 3100mV (on mine it's more than 3200mV).
Li-On and Li-Pol batteries are designed to operate between 4300 and 3000 mV when they reach more or less, than they are damaging.
So you can charge and discharge your phone everyday between 100 and 0%, without any battery damage.
Other thing is Android power management, every time you wipe battery stats or restore backup, or you spend some time in recovery, Android doesn't know, how much capacity is remaining and you need to make more charging cycles, to teach it again and get full capacity from battery. I still don't understand this kind of management in Android.
I've tried all the battery stuff. No dice still discharging fairly quick. In the Battery Usage section It still showing Android OS using around 39 to 40% usage all the time. I have done a full factory reset on the phone 2 days ago and still same.
I noticed, you are using the task killer, stop using it, you have probably loop of killing and starting of some services. Task killer kills, android starts, again and again...
I have uninstalled task killer restarted the phone and still got the high Android OS usage showing.
You won't notice any difference immediately, make one discharge, charge and discharge cycle and you'll see.

As far as your problem goes it may be an issue with the phone itself I've seen a couple photons that needed to be exchanged due to issues that sound similar to yours. If it's doing the same thing on a different battery I'd take your phone into a sprint repair center, you could also try a factory reset if you have not already done so. If your only seeing this behavior with your current battery then I would return it or request a warranty replacement.

root your photon (if not already rooted) and download battery calibration from market, also after rooting go to android development and download th3bill's extended battery mod

Yes, there is an additional reserve that the Smart chip will protect by turning off the battery once it reaches the "0% mark". The Smart chip will also continue to drain the battery further past the 0% mark eating into this battery reserve. Now one full discharge like this probably would not hurt the battery as long as the battery is recharge within a reasonable amount of time. However it certainly does nothing to benefit the battery health whatsoever and it is never recommended to let a battery fully discharge. There are some practices of only charging the battery to 75%-80% that can improve battery life, but individual run time will be sacrificed. My recommendation is if the battery is under 65% than to charge the battery if it is possible to do so.
After doing a factory reset the same problem remained. Sprint exchanged the phone for a new photon. Put my extended battery back in and so far no problems at all with the exception of not being able to join my contacts with my FB contacts.
I have been discharging my Photon and previous phones to 0-5% at least 3 times for a week and did not find any difference in capacity, compared with the new battery. Lasts from the morning to the evening. If I should charge it on 65%, then the phone would be unusable for me.
Like Schale said it could be an actual phone issue, but i highly doubt it. I would try some things before assuming its a problem with your phone. Do this... Also this assumes you are unlocked or at least rooted.
1: Factory reset so to start fresh with no crap applications (task killer apps do more harm than good, as do most battery saver apps)
2: Drain battery till the phone shuts itself off (Dude what right about it reserving a certain amount of juice to not cause damage)
3: Charge to 100% (Dont use the phone during this time.)
4: Use a battery calibrator app (rooted) or recovery (unlocked) to wipe the battery stats.
5: Drain power as fast as possible till phone shuts off
6: Charge to 100% (Again, dont use the phone during this time.)
You can now use the phone how you normally would. If you don't notice a drastic increase in battery after discharging and recharging three or four times over the next few days, I would be comfortable in assuming it's a phone problem. Good luck!
Hi there!
Since I updated from CM 10.2 to CM 11, I've been having battery drain issues with my S3. It drains really quickly, and won't last me through the day most of the time. Today I unplugged the phone at 6AM, and by 2:30PM, the battery level was at 10%. It was after 2PM that it started losing like 1% of battery every minute or so (even when not in use!) so I switched to airplane mode in order for the battery to last until I got home. Also note that I only used the phone for a while today (1hr 23 mins - see battery stats) and the usage was light - 20 mins music playback, one Bluetooth transfer, 15 mins WiFi tethering, 5 mins Hill Climb Racing - these are the most 'demanding' things I did with the phone. What really shocked me was that around 2PM, my friend's Huawei phone was at 60%, while mine was at 20%, but he'd had 2.5 hrs of screen time while I only had 1 hour. Not to mention his phone is more powerful and has a better screen...
I have Location set to Battery saving mode and have Location Reporting & History as well as the hotword recognition thingy turned off.
I've been on CM 11 since January, and recently updated my phone from M2 snapshot to the M3 version. While updating, I wiped the cache, dalvik cache and wiped all user data, thinking it would fix the battery drain. It didn't. Back on the M2 snapshot I tried greenifying Facebook, Messenger, Google+ and WhatsApp, but that also didn't solve the problem.
Also, about a month ago, I bought a new (original) charger for the phone, because the old one wouldn't charge the S3 when in use and when not in use, it would charge really slowly (like only 70% overnight in a few cases). The new charger fixed those issues, but could the battery drain be connected with the charger issue? Could the battery be damaged or dead? Or do you think it's a CM/Android issue?
I'll probably try to buy a new original battery, but I wanted to discuss this as a new battery might not fix it.

I did perform a search and I know there are many threads about battery life but thought my problem was a bit different so I made a new thread. Thanks for the links, though. Even though I've already done many of the suggested tips from the guide, I switched to ART yesterday and installed Better Battery Stats.
Now, 13.5 hours since unplugged, I have 37 % of battery left with 2 hours of screen on time. I guess enabling ART might have helped a bit...
Just a question, what am I supposed to look for in Better Battery Stats? I mean, is it Kernel Wakelocks or Partial Wakelocks that drain the battery more?
Oh and btw, the second link took me to OnePowerGuard Pro not Better Battery Stats. Just saying.
I have an att galaxy s3 (d2att) that I got back in March 2013. Over the course of the year I have probably changed my rom about 20-30 times to get the perfect rom. Now my phone's screen time is about 1 hour while just letting it sit with the display on and not running any apps or touching it. Currently running the task650 rom with android 4.4.3. Wiping the battery stats file or running the calibration app does not work. There is no option in my recovery menu under advanced settings to wipe battery stats and a battery calibration app says the battery file does not exist. Sometimes the phone will turn off at about 30% and the reason I believe for that is that the voltage goes down so much. On time I checked it around 35-40% and it was at about 2.5V and then it shut down. When I charge it, it hovers around 3.9-4.3V but when I use it, it starts to go down like crazy. I don't know if I need a new battery or if I should completely factory reset my phone.
Any advice?

A bad battery can be really dangerous. It may have become like this because of bad use or overuse. I would recommend changing it asap

1) The ROM you are using has a bug that is causing some type of battery drain. These do happen.
2) You have charged and discharged your battery so many times that it cannot hold a charge anymore. I start noticing battery life decreasing after about 2 years of my usage (generally fairly low). Most times my battery life does not drop below 60% or so. If you very often let it drop very low, I can see the battery life decrease significantly after about a year.

Yea, I can only assume that because I have let it drop so low many times, I might have ruined the cells within. I might just end up buying a new battery. Thanks.
After my stock battery started dying and not holding the charge anymore I bought two new aftermarket batteries (2300mAh) everything went fantastic for some time, then from one day to the other the battery I use daily started draining crazy (even 2% at time) I tried a lot of roms with no luck. Bad battery you say, here is the weird fact, the other battery which used maximum 4-5 times at month keeping it at half-charge, has the EXACT same drain that the other has. Is it possibile that something in the phone has gone nuts and is indicating wrong values? I also ran a full charge-discharge cycle preventing the low battery shutdown through xposed, and it shutdown some minutes after hitting 0%, at full charge indicates 4.300mV is it correct, isn't it?
Also using the *#0228# code (I can't recall now if it's correct) the charge level drops a lot like 30-50% and I noticed that the phone later stays at that % for quite a bit and also the heat from the battery draining stops and the phone stays very cool also while gaming, until it starts draining again

You can look at the simple battery-statistics in setting to find abnormal consumption by an app.
Otherwise buy a battery from Samsung's e-store: I bought several 'original' batteries (not for S3) from Amazon and mentioned too early wear after 1/2 year.
Replacement batteries are a waste of money. I had 2. 1 bloated and the other dies in a few minutes. Upgraded my phone instead.
I wish I stole my HTC M9.
