[Q] Can't flash TW roms - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

A couple months ago I was having problems with my recovery. It kept crashing every time I tried to flash anything. Found out I needed to format my internal storage, once I did that I was able to flash CM but when I tried to flash a TW rom I get stuck in a bootloop. I re-downloaded the same rom 3 times thinking it was a bad download no dice. Tried other TW roms still no dice. But, when I flash a ASOP rom it works just fine. What could of caused this issue?

Anybody Know how to solve this? Been trying to figure this issue out for a whole month!

just a guess but for Note 2/3/4 users with locked bootloaders you cannot flash a kernel. Using safestrap or another vitual rom required it to be TW-based. If you're running true AOSP and was able to flash CM are you sure you're running the stock kernel?

My bootloader is unlocked. I was able to flash any rom running AOSP (Liquid smooth CM only 2 I have tried)

It's possible that you could have something partially corrupted in your data/cache partitions.
If you don't want to have to ODIN back to 4.1.2... and then start all over again with CASUAL, etc.... then you might check out this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53624921
Wiping cache and doing factory reset in the Stock Recovery might correct things... it apparently does a more thorough wipe than the ones done through custom Recoveries like TWRP/Philz... etc... You can just Odin back your preferred custom recovery after completing the wipes in the Stock recovery.

This sounds like the same problem I am having in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-2-verizon/help/assistance-odin-soft-hard-brick-t3093391
Except I can't flash anything. I will also try flashing this stock recovery because it sounds like the only thing I haven't tried doing.
Thanks so much for this thread I hope it can save my phone.

Every ROM gets a boot loop!

Hey guys.
I'm on LA4 and i want to flash a custom ROM onto my SGS2.
I treid CM7 (flashed is twice) and som other ROMS but everytime i flash it, i get in a boot loop.
I hope i'm doing it the right way?
I copy the .zip file to my sdcard and press "install zip" in the recovery mode.
Did you wipe data/cache/dalvik before installing the rom? It's pretty much important, especially if you're going from LA4 to CM7
yea,sure!
before and after the flashing i wiped all
Edit: Also try format /system after you wipe the 3 said above.
Try going back to your stock image and flash a stock KERNEL afterwards, boot CWM, flash a stock image, when done, flash a stock kernel and newest radio.
I'd say it might be a kernel issue. I had it when I flashed MIUI, and in reverse when I flashed back to others..
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Try avoiding wiping it afterwards. Just wipe everything out, flash it and immediately reboot.
I also hope you did a nandroid backup as well. If you did that and it still boot loops, try restoring it and going back to it and having another go.
oh my gosh i figured it out!
CuraeL, you're right.. its a kernel problem
i have to flash the kernel again after the rom update.. weird but only that way it's working!
thanks
No worries. I have had to do it on a lot of the roms I installed myself, on my SGS II, back in the days. Wonderful phone, a bit weird the way the whole kernel thing is made. But I suppose that's cause the kernels are written for 2 different "builts" of the system.
Keep it in mind, as you might need to do it again some day, lol.
Have fun. ^^

[Q]Problems with flashing custom ROMS

Lately i'm experiencing problems with flashing custom roms (i.e. UltimaROM , Xperianze, whatever)
What i did is:
1: flash the latest CWM , touch and non -touch with Odin
2: download ROM of choice , copy to internal SD-card
3: reboot recovery, fact-reset, wipe cache + dalvik
4: flash rom ( with aroma installer )
5: boot phone
with booting it keeps hanging on the Samsung i9300 logo txt. It doesnt matter which rom i flash. it always keeps hanging.
I've tried alternative methods like flashing TWRP and do the same as above but again, no success. I also tried factory-reset after flash, cache wipe etc. no success.
The weirdest thing is: when i try to flash CM or MIUI ( current running MIUI ) , it works like a charm, but normal "custom" roms are not approved it seems.
does anyone have a suggestion for me what to do? or explain what i am doing wrong , or even better, can explain why CM-based ROMS work?
Have you checked the MD5 of your downloaded ROMs when they are on your SD card? Format system, data and pre-load before flashing? Tried flashing an alternative kernel/radio before you boot the first time?
If only stock based ROMs are a problem then it maybe something that is unique to them, probably a direct hardware hit via the kernel.
Try returning completely to stock to test, flashing Samsung's vanilla EMB5 via Odin - including stock recovery and full wipe. If that doesn't work then you may have a hardware issue that CM or MIUI doesn't use.
yeah good idea to return to stock and try all over again.
to your other questions: no i didnt flash another kernel after i flashed the custom rom. i've tried with several kernels which options were given to me in aroma installer ( boeffla, syah, stock )
md5: did that
format system and data: nope. kinda relied on the fact-reset + cache/dalvik
what do u mean with pre-load?
if I were you I would format data & system again manually after the fac. reset thing, or even more clean use the mega wipe flashable zip to have a clean slate to start from (it will format anything but the ext. sd-card). Then flash the rom from your ext. sd-card and see how it goes.
additional possibly helpful hints
hi there,
i'm not entirely sure if this will help you but generally speaking i came made a few observations about the fact that some people, mostly repeatingly the same users, encounter problems with their custom roms and/or flashing them, while others don't, albeit they are using the same devices.
i my selfe use 3 different devices, all rooted and running on pac 4.3, always lates nightly, as there are GT-N7100 - GT-I9100 - Nexus 4
not to the point
a) other than most other users i usually clean cache and dalvik cache as well before and after flashing the new rom and/or new nightly
and never encountrer any problems except those which everybody, using the same rom and nightly encounters.
b) whenever i flash an totally different rom and/or upgrade and/or downgrade to another level of android os, i.e. from 4.2.2 to 4.3, i perform
a clean install, including not only a factory reset, but as well a format sd-card, format cache and format system etc., again i cannot proof
which of these steps make a or the differnce but however, i never have problems others than thosw which everyone has with a version.
c) when using cusome kernels and due to the fact that some roms come with a kernel included, as well as with a custom recovery included,
it is strongly recommended not to forget to flas the kernel again after each flashing the new rom. one good example ist dorimanx kernel
for GT-I9100 which will not boot into recovery and reluctantly boot at all after a new flash of a pac nightly without reflashing the kernel.
d) try to fix permissions on reboot instead of doing it from recovery. one reason is that not every recovery has this option and further i
found that when fixing permissions before the first boot after flashing a new rom, there might be bootloops, albeit i cannot explain exactly
why that should, but however, sometimes it's better to be on the safe sid.
e) try to run whether the lastes version of custom recovery for your device, and or the use the included custom recovery of the rom or the
kernel. this again is one thing that can help to avoid some unexpected and hard to explain bootproblems and/or fc's etc.
hope that i could give you some new ideas how to avoid trouble while using custom roms and other hacks

Fix permissions was removed because its useless. All permissions are set when flashing by way of updater-script. Fix permissions via recovery "guesses" the permissions which causes issues...
If permissions need fixing, then the updater-script is poor which means you should probably avoid flashing it.

installing liquid v2.9 issue

I have a sch-i500 that is rooted with cwm working.
I am very interested in running liquid smooth v 2.9 found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2245120
so I did a format, wiped the cache and davlik. when I installed the zip from external sd card the phone immediately gave me a screen for CWM v 6.0.3.3.
I can still navigate and restore old back ups but the phone does not go past the Samsung logo on the boot screen. Any advice is appreciated.
I was previously running stock 2.3.5 E09 if that helps
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1026746
seems to be the best way for me to recover from this (looks like I flashed a non voodoo rom without removing voodoo) but I am unable to get the phone into download mode with or without the battery in the phone.
please help......(update) Alright, I am a moron. needed to have a powered usb port. on my way to recovery. thanks for having all this great info in one place.

Oh so close.
When coming from 2.3.x ROM you will need to flash the rom (liquid: or other 4.2.x) you will need to flash 2 more times...
The 1st flash get you into the new recovery only,,, as you found out.
2nd flash will pop up with an error message about incompatible partition and telling you to re-flash again,,,
So 3rd flash actually installs your new ROM
Then install a current/compatible Google gapps
.
Enjoy
.
Thank you, I am getting closer.
still on the second and third flash of the rom I get a satus 7 error which I think is a bootloader issue.
I have flashed the GBbootloader.tar through odid to no avail and am following Section:4 How to flash any ICS 4.0.x & 4.x.x JellyBean based rom

what does the error say besides status 7?
did you odin the CWM4 fixed for cm7 then install the ROM 3 times?
can you get a pic up for us to see?
just to be sure......using odin, I repartitioned with the pit, and flashed a E03 rom. rebooted the phone fine.
flashed the CWM4 fix for 7 and redid the GB bootloaders as well.
went into recovery and factory reset, wiped cache, and dalvik.
installed liquid-JB-v2.7-Official-fascinatemtd.zip this time first time took me directly to clockwork where I flashed again. prompted with install from sdcard complete. repeated and got same message.
factory reset, wipe, wipe and flashed gapps. Everything seems to have worked this time with the v2.7Official instead of 2.9. I will play with this for just a bit and probably try it again tonight with a fresh downloaded copy of v2.9. I really do appreciate your assistance and help and I would not have gotten this far without the forum.
update:
flawless installation of v2.9 since 2.7 was already installed. (installed via cloclwork mod recovery)
It was most likely an operator error that prevented me from installing 2.9 after E03. But I don't see the benefit of going back to recreate why it didn't work. Thanks again all is good and right.

A problem with all JB 4.3 ROM I've tried

Hi, all!
I have that annoying problem with all the 4.3 ROM I've tried with no exception. Everything is fine until the first reboot. Then it's stuck on the first Galaxy SIII boot logo. I'm using TWRP - the latest version if it matters.
I always wipe everything first.
Please give more details on how you flash it.

I am sorry for the wrong section. May I ask some to move it to Q&A?
I always wipe data, cash, dalvik cash, system. Then install the ROM and gapps...
After the restart I set up the google account and etc. And after the first restart the phone freezes. That's all.
I'll try with different recovery.
PS. I've just tried CWM recovery 6.0.3.3. and Omega AOSP v9. Still the same.
Try cwm 6.0.3.6 and after you install the rom and after its set up go to recovery and factory reset

That's strange, I run Philz recovery and every 4.3 flash till now went through without issue.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I tried all the recoveries I could find. Including Philz. Still the same.
And something else strange. I installed CWM, CWM, touch and Philz and with them I made backups. After restoration of the backup the phone freezes. I also tried to install Omega 49 and the installation goes OK, but freezes before the first start-up.
The only solution was to install manually TWRP (Odin) to restore some of my old backups. I'm beginning to think that there is something wrong with my phone. It's black if it is important.
Suggest total wipe of phone install your stock rom and test
Hi,
I just want to say I'm also having the same problem.
Started using TWRP with full wipe, same issue on 4.3 and no issues on 4.2.
On latest CWM same problem and 4.2 wont even pass the first boot on Samsung logo.
Also had to use Odin to get back on TWRP and flash a 4.2 rom again.
Anyway there is one more thing I would like to try but haven't had the chance to do so, is installing the latest modem and ril. But I'm kind skeptic about that currently because there is also some risks and my S3 is my daily driver.
Don't change the ril on any custom as you stand a big chance of breaking the calls and Tex's. Modem yes but not ril. Do change to cwm and retry.

You are doing a full wipe?. System and data is the main thing to wipe not just factory reset. So go into mounts and storage and format data, system and cache there then flash the rom /gapps.

[SOLVED] Galaxy S3 not booting any AOSP/AOKP Custom ROMs. Stuck on Sammy?

I searched the internet and threads on XDA for this problem but couldn't really find one!
The problem is- My Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300) doesn't boot any AOSP/AOKP/CM ROMs! It's just the bootanimation and DONE! For hours and hours the bootanimation only! But I can flash any Sammy 4.3 / 4.4 ROMs! They boot! They work properly!
I used to change to AOSP to Sammy and vice versa so many times with no issues. One day I downloaded the UltimaAOSP Valhalla ROM and flashed it. This was the first time my S3 didn't boot. I flashed custom Kernels like boeffla on it but all in vain. It was stuck on the bootanimation. I flashed NeatROM AOSP on top of it, which worked properly. Then it was with the fusion sp ROM that it didn't boot again. Again I flashed NeatROM AOSP on top of it (it's my favorite ROM), which I used just to copy some other ROM from my PC to my phone.
Now, I'm on my Stock ROM which came with my phone since so long! I'm shocked to see now NO AOSP ROMs are booting! I've used C-ROM, NeatROM, Resurrection Remix and SOKP Milestone. I have the ROMs' ZIP files and also a Nandroid Backup which I made when I changed to other ROMs. Not the ZIP files neither the Nandroid Backups are helping! ZIP files get flashed succesfully (I wipe the data & cache & dalvik-cache every time) and the Nandroid Backups get restored successfully! But always the phone gets stuck on the bootanimation!
I always moved to AOSP from Sammy (never Sammy to Sammy) but this time I gave it a shot.
Result : All the Samsung ROMs are flashing, working properly, even the Nandroid restores boot. I flashed my newly downloaded FlashingDroid Sammy 4.4 ROM which also works.
BUT I CAN'T GET THE AOSP ROMs onto my phone!
My thought (it could be wrong) : Is it to do something with the data in a partition other than system, data, and cache? Some partition which has stored files needed to boot Sammy ROMs and is preventing AOSP ROMs to start?
HELP!
:crying:

Update - Got More Info
Update : Just noticed that when it's the bootanimation on the screen after flashing an AOSP ROM, pressing any of the buttons on the phone vibrates the phone vigorously 2 times.. why??
Also, I want to ask about the connection between a kernel and a bootanimation without starting a new thread 'cause I think it's the solution to my problem here.. The data which I probably suspect that prevents AOSP ROMs from booting is some different bootanimation file? I mean when I'm on a Sammy ROM, I started to flash different bootanimations after flashing some CWM Custom Bootanimation ZIP file. The bootanimation changes on all Kernels on Sammy ROMs -except 1 that is the boeffla kernel. The strange thing is that the first custom bootanimation I had flashed (after flashing Boeffla's Sammy Kernel) when I switched to Sammy from my last AOSP was the hTC One Bootanimation which worked fine (the bootanimation successfully changed). After that, it never changed. My phone always booted up showing the hTC One Bootanimation no matter how many times I flashed another bootanimation ZIP or the CWM ZIPs which enable/disable Custom bootanimations. But! When I changed to any other kernel (the stock that came with the ROM/GoogyMax 2/AGNi), the bootanimation was the last one flashed by me before changing the kernel. I could change the bootanimations successfuly every time after that. Now, I flashed Android Revolution HD ROM and was on Stock Kernel. As soon as I changed to boeffla kernel (without flashing any other ZIP), the bootanimation changed! (automatically!) And it was again the same old hTC One Bootanimation.
Can someone please tell me WHERE is this bootanimation data and the data that prevents AOSP ROMs to boot is stored? Certainly not in the data or system or cache partition...
Update 2 : Just figured out where the automatic htc bootanimation magic happened. The hTC bootanimation.zip file was found in data/local . However, I always knew the bootanimation directory as system/media.. So now, is it safe for me to delete all files in data/local 'cause it seems it is the problem for AOSP ROMs?

Well, what you did was butter than a factory reset.
Factory reset means wiping data, cache and dalvik cache.
I would like you to do something first, try downloading the latest stock firmware for your phone from sammobile, and then flash it with Odin, then try flash AOSP roms again, maybe you have an old bootloader.

I would like you to do something first, try downloading the latest stock firmware for your phone from sammobile, and then flash it with Odin, then try flash AOSP roms again, maybe you have an old bootloader.

Im running the latest firmware which id flashed through odin.
AOSP roms still not booting.
I had wiped those partitions before i flashed the rom. I did not wipe after i flashed them.

Are you sure it's the latest one?
Did you check Sammobile.com?
The latest one was released in 1st Feb 2017.
Also please check the IMEI of your phone by typing *#06#, because if you've a problem with efs partition you may not be able to flash any AOSP Rom (happened to a friend before..he had sim working without IMEI!!)
Also what is your country code?
As stated above, check your imei is still OK then from a working stock state:
Root it.
Flash custom recovery.
Flash the custom rom twice and then wipe data/cache. Do not wipe system!.
If that doesn't work then try the above but instead of wipe data/cache do a factory reset.

My country code is XSG but ill try flashing the THL latest version and again report.
I was trying to check my IMEI number it shows UNKNOWN APPLICATION but sim and other modem related stuff works really fine.
Is it something to do with this?
