I unlocked the bootloader and rooted my Z Ultra (c6806) some time ago. I now want to return it to stock so that it can received regular updates from Sony. Unfortunately, I haven't done any rooting in a long while, and I want to make sure I don't brick the phone, etc. Is there a simple guide for bringing it back to a stock state where it can receive normal OTA (or PC Companion) updates? As of now, attempting to update returns this error message:
Problem: The phone/tablet contains modified software that cannot be updated.
Details: Sony Update Engine Failure (error 2003).

I apologize for what seems like such a silly question. Thanks for the help.
Have you locked your bootloader? If not then I'm afraid PC Companion won't do much for you. You have to either lock your bootloader and use PC Companion again or download FlashTool and a firmware you like, then flash it.

The bootloader is unlocked, and I have not relocked it. My questions are these. I looked around the site and I found these instructions:
Back to Stock:
To get back to pure stock Sony there are several things that need to be done:
1. Make sure you have root
2. Backup any data/photos/etc on the phone
3. Restore your TA backup with the TA backup tool above
If you are on a custom kernel or ROM you ZU will not boot at this stage
4. Start flashtool and load a FTF
5. Start the flash and wait for the onscreen instructions to connect the ZU
6. Connect your ZU in flashmode
With the ZU powered off
Connect to PC while holding the volume down key
Flash will start
7. Wait for flash to complete
My questions:
I did make a TA Backup, and I have it. If I don't restore the TA Backup (which seems like a little bit of a hassle), will I still be able to update through PC Companion?
If I just relock the boatloader, will I be able to use PC Companion to update from where it sits currently (I think 4.4.2)? Will relocking the bootloader on a rooted 4.4.2 device mess it up?
If I relock the bootloader, and I am able to use PC Companion to update, I will lose root, correct? And if I lose root, I will not be able to restore the TA backup, correct, unless I reroot it?
Here's my end goal. I just want the new stock Lollipop on it, and I want to be able to receive updates (they don't have to be OTA) from Sony. I gave the phone to my mom, and I want to keep it up to date. What is the easiest (and safest, least-likely-to-brick) way of accomplishing this?
Thank you for any help.

Hi,
I rooted my Z2 tablet a few days ago and have found that I don't really need the advantages it brings (from what I can tell). SO - I want to get it back to the way it was when I first opened the box.
I have seen threads about different devices and how to restore them to factory or stock (??), but they seem to call for specific files or flash software. So that brings me once again to this forum to figure out whether anyone can direct me to some instructions on how to do this. I figure it shouldn't be too hard. Just being careful.
Thanks very much for the advice once again.
I think if you flash the rootable kernel again, you could use an unrooting tool to undo the root. I'm also aware that there are files that you can flash to re-lock the bootloader (I once did this with an Xperia mini pro, although I'm not sure if such file exists for this tablet) but the DRM keys are lost forever a.f.a.i.k. But at least if you manage to re-lock the bootloader you will be able to install F/W upgrades through official ways again.

Anyhow, you won't be able to restore to (more or less) factory status without at least flashing a couple of files.

THank you for the response. Unfortunately i'm not even sure how I would go about flashing 'the rootable kernel'.... Feeling a bit foolish for getting into this actually.
From what i'm reading, it seems like I need to get the stock software and start again. So i'm looking for the 'FTF' for my tablet, which is a SGP511. Not having any luck though.
Which was the process that you followed to root it?

It was on another site - can't remember which. It got the clockwork mod installed. I think? Or was that just a recovery thing? No idea.
I'm actually now just doing a factory reset to see what happens, and it said 'root access possibly lost' in the process, which I thought was a good sign. Guess i'll keep tinkering with enough caution to eventually get the warranty back in tact.
Hopefully the loss of DRM doesn't effect the warranty.
In that case I guess you will have to download a firmware ftf file of an official unmodded firmware (preferably one of your region but I think especially if you have the wifi-only version it doesn't matter much as long as it contains the interface and input languages that you need), and install (or "flash") that using Flashtool. After that the root will certainly be gone and if you could then find a file to relock your bootloader I think your warrenty will be fine. I honestly don't think that Sony service and repair personel will check for DRM keys every time before repairing a device.
UPDATE
Factory reset appears to have gotten things back to normal. My plan is now just to unroot using an unroot tool (app i guess?) and then to lock the bootloader some how as well.

So it's certain that the tablet is still rooted at this moment? Some superuser apps have an option to do a full unroot, such as SuperSU, you could try that
That's great. I think that's sorted it out. SuperSU had the full unroot option and it looks like it's all sorted.
Thanks for the help.
Hello!
My phone can't seem to accept the OTA file, even after I've unrooted it. I don't have custom recovery and I have a locked bootloader.
The error message is "The file could not be verified" which I supposed was because of the root, apparently not.
Anyone know what's up? It's the standard C6833.
It`s because Rooting changes sone Files. Just back up your Data and use the Update Centre for reflashing
Alright I understand, I thought a unroot and removal of supersu would suffice.
Update center, that's the Sony PC companion yes? Won't I loose all my data?
Even with a backup, don't I have to set up the whole phone again? As if I would flash a ftf?

yes whith this method you loose the Data, but you can also try to flash an FTF, which should have the same effect. You just have to set some Files to the state bevore rooting or wait till you get the Update via PC Companion or update Service. I think the best way for you is to wait till PC Companion shows you the update.

The OTA may or may not work, if it fails then just flash an FTF (with or without data wipe depending on your mood) and then reroot etc
Need help

what does the post of mine above yours say?
is there any way to return the Z2 Tablet SGP561 (Verizon edition) back to complete factory condition with PC Companion, FlashTool, XperiFirm, or other? the bootloader is still not unlockable on the VZW model as far as i am aware and i can't find any FTF for this model.
i am currently on 4.4.2 with root and NUT's dual recovery and have backed up my DRM keys. there are conflicting reports of being able to maintain root with the OTA to 4.4.4, so before trying I'd like to know how i could return to the current setup if it fails.
thanks

Hi there,
In the past, I did some test of root and unlock the bootloader.
Now I would like to use it as stock and be able to use the software Xperia Companion to update, repair and everything on the tablet.
My issue is that I can't do anything on it.
Does anyone can help me to restore it as stock ?
Thank you
Select recover in Companion and then connect Z3. Follow the instructions and it's simple. It will wipe everything to factory default.
