[Q] stuck in Gingerbread - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Hello friends. My AT&T SGH I-777 has become very very problematic.
It is stuck at 2.3.6 and I cannot get it back to 4.1 Jelly Bean.
After the simple fix attempts, I tried Kies twice. Odin twice. No Luck. Samsung sent me to Best Buy. No luck. Contacted Samsung again, they said send it in...I did. Today, when they asked for my credit card to charge me $70+, I said no thank you, I'll try XDA.
Apparently, trying to go from 2.3 to 4.1 is not that simple. But it can be done.
Any direction or advice is certainly welcome. Thanks in advance.
Pacqueo

It should *not* be difficult, unless you have some underlying issue.
Can you please explain in detail: tried Odin twice -- no luck.

stumped.....
Check this out: Baseband is correct for 4.1, but is stuck on Android 2.3.4.....any suggestions other than Odin or Kies?

Thanks for getting back to me CC.
Odin has worked for other issues in the past, but not this one.
I have put my phone specs in a separate post.
Any input would be appreciated.

Check the last entry in this post by @creepyncrawly, that's where you can find the Jelly Bean files you'll need to flash through Odin (get both the UCMD8 file and the AJK 4.9 kernel). Don't worry about the baseband, that's only your modem and it isn't binary/rom/OS specific.
Avoid Kies at all costs and only use Odin v3 (I believe the best version is 1.85), and if you run into trouble come back here and we'll try and help. We've all been where you are, and have flashed these files many, many times, so we know they work. Sometimes it takes several attempts with Odin to get it working, but it will flash.

I can't tell from your response whether you are having any specific issues with Odin. I'll assume that you can use Odin without issues as long as you have the correct files to flash. If that's not true, just ask and explain. As Steve said, flash the I777UCMD8 Stock Binaries (Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean) Full Odin Flashable tar. If your goal is to have stock Jelly Bean, then stop there. If you want to customize your phone after, then either Steve or I can give you additional advice if you need it. (Don't download the AJK MicSwap kernel from that page though, as it only works with ported roms and will not work with stock.)
I don't always get in here every day, but I will answer if you are patient.

...whew!
after throwing it in a drawer and going on vacation, I tried again.
It worked exactly like the instructions you gave me.
Now all I have to do is figure out why the battery is draining to 0% in less than 8 hours...just sitting, not even being used!

You could root and use better battery stats to diagnose the drain. There's a thread in the general forum, [REF] Known identified battery drainers which may be of help.

So, they are are retards because they can't assist in helping you upgrade your phone from an unsupported firmware version? If you yet still upgraded after TMO issue the warning about JI5, then that was even more unwise.

Bell Galaxy S 2.. want to go back to stock! :(

hey guys,
i just bought a samsung galaxy s2, rooted it with odin/superoneclick... works fine but i need to go back to a regular, vanilla galaxy s
i used super one click to unroot the phone, but i still get that yellow warning triangle every time i start up my phone. so i think it has something to do with that odin thing or whatever... again, super illiterate... i just really need to go back to a normal, no root, nothing regular old galaxy s 2! i'd really appreciate it guys. thanks so much!
There is (currently) no way to return to stock Bell i9100m. The firmware just hasn't been released. For future reference, do a little more reading before you flash anything as this has been mentioned in almost any thread flashing a Bell Galaxy S2 is mentioned.
Why do you want to go back anyway? Are you having some sort of problem? Is it for warranty service? If it's just the yellow triangle that's bothering you there are ways to get rid of that, use the search. Since you're still on the original firmware, at this time you will be able to get everything back to stock except the kernel.
Yep, as the poster above me mentioned theres no way to completely go back to "bell stock." Though if you just want unrooted samsung stock, flash any of the plethora of official samsung odin updates out there (kg3,kg6 etc) imo they are better anyway, no bloat and they perform better. Plus they will get rid of that pesky triangle thats bothering you so much.

thats the thread for one of the MANY updates available for the SGS II, look around you'll find tons of roms. Research how to work odin before you flash though (if thats what you are going to do) odin can easily brick your phone if you don't know what you are doing.
while i have you here... i did the odin thing, i figured, **** it, might as well just use these custom kernel things.. i have no idea what they are or do. i just flashed ninphetamine or something... what exactly does it do? also, how come titanium back up etc say that it is not rooted. do i need to do the superoneclick?
Before you continue i would suggest you start reading before flashing/doing anything more. Its scary when people flash stuff without gaining the minimum knowledge to understand whats involved and the consequences. We could hold your hand and tell ya this and that but its been said many times before in this very forums.

Same Problem
If anyone comes up wit a good link or video that will be very helpful
I have this same phone and took a look at the links in the second post. However the kernel numbers don't seem to be following the same format as the links in the thread.
Has anyone had any luck rooting this kernel on the c spire galaxy s showcase?
I tried Odin3 and it messed up my phone and I had to go get a new one.
I'm also looking for help on this as well.
SuperOneClick
I'm having the same issues. I have tried SuperOneClick and it stops on step 6.
I'm having the same problem too after updating to 2.3.5. Super one click freezes on step 6.
Same issue with my CSpire SGS running 2.3.5. I do think that speed and battery life are improved over 2.2, but I miss my root.

Did you guys do the official update with Kies? Send me a PM for a way to get a rooted ROM on your Showcase.
I did so the official update from C Spire. I'm not interested in a custom rom I just want to root my phone so I can use wifi tether with my galaxy tab again.
Any help would be appreciated.

I've also had various issues with some other roms, ranging from no auto-rotate to glitchy in-call audio.

[Q] - Why can't I find the Stock Touchwiz - only the old honeycomb

I would like the files to ODIN the stock Touchwiz update from late 2011.
I would then write a guide for everyone on how to return the tab to stock... this is asked way too much.
I do NOT want to write the guide updating everyone to the old honeycomb.
Anyone have ODIN files for returning to stock touchwiz?

"Stock" and "touchwiz," at least on this forum, are mutually exclusive. I honestly have no idea what you're asking for. Do you want android 3.1 or 3.2? If you want 3.2, you're stuck with touchwiz; there is no stock 3.2 ROM available. If you want a stock 3.1 without touchwiz, that can be found in the dev forum.
If you want a guide on how to return a tab to stock (and the only reason I can imagine someone would want to do this would be to send it in for warranty service), theres a guide in the sticky in the dev subforum, and also team overcome has a great method with all the downloads both on their ROM post and on their website (with great instructions too).
Simply asking for an ODIN version of the TouchWiz update. That is stock... not rooted/tweaked.

I think you need to read up on this a bit more because that doesn't exist.
Here's a little history for you: Touchwiz was an update to samsung's android 3.1 build that came out after 3.1 was released (so you can get both stock 3.1 and touchwiz 3.1 builds). Touchwiz was integrated into the 3.2 build. So the only "touchwiz upgrade" i can think of was an OTA upgrade to 3.1. I don't think flashing that will get you anywhere. If you're looking for the stock 3.2 build from samsung (and I suspect you are), go to samfirmware.com. If you really did search the forum you'd have found this everywhere, including in the sticky in the dev forum.
But there's no need to write a guide. Use CWM to flash the stock ROM, and then use ODIN to flash stock recovery. That's all it takes; you now have a stock tab.
^ I appreciate your response... I am just pointing out that I have never seen the touchwiz stock ODIN that one could flash... only honeycomb.
edit: and considering that almost daily there is a post about getting back to stock, I would say a guide is warranted.
If you can help do that, great.
coming from this same line its also helpful if the instruction would be basing from the download of the recent or older firmware, which should be from the downloads from sammobile.com that we all know provides all the stock roms, latest and versions before.
reverting stock means, the latest official: recovery (not cwm), kernel, and the firmware (rom) itself. these all 3 components, not kernel or firmware only. nothing straightforward is provided here, all bits and pieces on scattered threads but don't coherently work well with each other, mainly because they're abandoned or not updated anymore by their OPs.
another reason for reverting back to stock aside from warranty chase, is so that kies will be able to just update the tab to its latest firmware, or even ota. this is basically how the tab provided by samsung should be for a really basic end user without even knowing what root is.
then above average users can always do their rooting and after mods cleanly, knowing they came from the real clean stock and can always go back either by cwm backup/restore or manually everything from scratch.

This is not intended as a flame, but from what you've written I am not certain you understand what you're talking about. Touchwiz is basically Samsung's theme running on top of honeycomb. No honeycomb = no touchwiz. Also, you still need to make a distinction between 3.1 and 3.2 ... Regardless, as far as I know there is no touchwiz-enabled ROM that can be flashed with ODIN.
Anyways, there is a very good guide on teamovercome's site which is unfortunately down right now. Here's a link to the site; since it's down I can't link directly to the guide:

^ I am perfectly aware of what TouchWiz is.
I am simply trying to find the files to load in ODIN that would allow someone to boot up to the stock (not rooted or debloated) setup of the TouchWiz update in late 2011.
I do not want to go back to honeycomb 3.1. Not sure how I can say it more plainly.
Does this exist? If not in ODIN, in a flashable zip?

The 'touchwiz update" was for 3.1.
3.2 came with touchwiz baked in.
If this is what you're looking for, then you're looking for the samsung android 3.2 update, not the "touchwiz update." I don't know how I could say this more clearly.
If you read my posts, I answered your question. What you're looking for does not exist. If you need stock (god knows why) just follow the many guides that already exist (or the instructions I gave earlier).
Anyways, I can't help you any further without pulling my hair out. Maybe someone else has more patience. Good luck.

Honestly man, it may be better to not answer at times.
You do not understand me. Perhaps I am not saying things clearly enough. O well.
I want the files to return a device to STOCK 3.2.... not 3.1 Honeycomb which is all I see. I consider "stock" to be an unaltered version of the update (or original) firmware... I also prefer to go to the latest "stock" setup, not 3.1 HC.
You said it does not exist, I laugh at that.
I would like this because many people:
a - ask this all the time
b - want it for servicing/warranty
c - prefer to return to stock before switching to a new rom.
I prefer to use ODIN since I know and like ODIN.
If this does not make sense, do not respond or sound rude please.

I believe this is KMM not KMN. If so you may get an update to KMN after you flash this
it is labeled as KMM but this would be the stock first instance of 3.2

I did check out that zip... It looked like it was the one Samsung pulled for wifi issues. I know like a week or so later they rolled it out again, but I did not know if there was a different build, I assumed so.
Thank you for posting that by the way, got carried away with all the other madness. Thanks!
note the wifi problem was due to the installer not the rom itself. if flashing and not installing via OTA or Kies - it should not have that problem

[Q] How's my game plan?

What's up everybody!
Have a bone stock brand new Galaxy SII (Original one just ran into a... catastrophic failure you could say, so this is the backup).
It is an AT&T 2.3.6 KK6 phone
Now to resolve this and overhaul it, here's my game plan. Would appreciate it if someone in the know could step in and tell me if it looks solid or if I'm doing something terribly wrong. I am actually planning to run a similar kernel/ROM setup as creepyncrawly's (AJK 4.9 MicSwap + SHOstock3 v4.0) so perhaps he could throw me a few pointers if I'm off somewhere. For the record, I have searched extensively, it's just a lot of information to take in all at one time.
First, I will be rooting it using this method by creepyncrawly, using the supplied instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18859438&postcount=199
If everything goes according to how I think it's supposed to be, I will then have a rooted stock firmware.
From there, I should flash the new kernel first by copying it over to the phone's SD card and flashing it through CWM (This is me assuming the above rooting method gives me access to CWM. I don't really know to be honest )
From there, I have the rooted stock firmware + AJK 4.9 kernel.
Then everything should be okay and in place to flash in the SHOstock3 v4.0 ROM, right?
My biggest problem right this moment is that it appears ajnewkirk has deleted his kernel repository for the most part on his Android developer download page. Files show as not found, anyone know where I can find a mirror to the version WITH the MicSwap? I saw one posted at the end of his thread for one WITHOUT but not one with. Any help on that front would be greatly appreciated as well. Thank you!
Looks like I found an error with my gameplan already
Seems I was looking at the wrong link for creepyncrawyls root method. It didn't say Not for KK6 above that method like the first two in the rooting thread (Hopefully you know which one I mean) so I just assumed it would work. More searching has found that THIS is probably the best method to use
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432
Luckily, this one downloaded a lot quicker than the last one, and as of writing this sentence it has just finished. Will report back with results.
EDIT: Flashed the .tar file in ODIN, everything seems to have gone smoothly. Maybe too smoothly. I can't tell if I am rooted or not... lol.
Kernel shows the same, version is the same, etc. Awkward...
OK. This was 9 hours ago. You may be finished already. Anyway...
1) There is an easy root method that did not exist at the time those guides were written, which should work with any version of the stock firmware including UCKK6 called Framaroot. It's an apk that you install then root from the phone.
2) In the guide method: there is no CWM in the stock kernel, so after you root, you install a custom kernel that contains CWM recovery. The best way it with Mobile Odin lite or Mobile Odin pro.
Let us know how you are coming and if you still need help.

Damn, that Framaroot method would have been pretty helpful to know sooner lol. It's all good though, I did get it figured out last night, just forgot to update the thread.
I ended up using the 1Click Odin rooting method that I had originally posted about (thank you for that by the way) to roll the Android version back to 2.3.4 and change the firmware from KK6 to UCKH7. From there, I just used mobile Odin to quickly flash Entropy's Daily Driver gingerbread kernel so I could use CWM. After that, I installed SHOstock3 v4.0 and was on the home stretch. I managed to find a mirror of AJK 4.9 with MicSwap in an attachment on another thread on here (ajnewkirk didn't respond to my PM) and after transferring that to the phone's internal SD root, I booted into CWM and flashed the kernel and been good to go.
Freakin loving this, SOOO much better than what I had before. I actually rooted my S2 almost a year ago (See join date lol) but it was with Entropy's DD kernel and a gingerbread software that emulated the Nexus. I freakin hated it, but didn't want to go through the hassle of trying to figure out how to swap it again (and slightly laziness I admit). Phone recently met an.... untimely demise you could say.... and I pulled out the brand new backup. The SHOstock Jelly Bean is a HUGE improvement, feels like going from a Pinto to a Lambo. I can see why you chose to run this combination on your phone, I have no regrets
Glad you got it sorted.
By the way, I don't understand your problem finding AJK 4.9. The download link for all three versions of the 4.9 kernel are in the OP of the kernel thread in the development forum.

I knew where the files were but the links have been dead for at least 2 days (First I checked on them). They are currently still dead when I click them.
I tried to PM ajnewkirk to ask why that may be gone or if he possibly had a mirror for it but he never replied, so I had to do some searching around playing with terms in Google to find a recent post that had it attached.

I've had that happen before as well due to the file host being down. Sounds like you found an alternate link but if you still need it let me know and I'll PM a Drive link or something.
