ok number 1 thing i cannot be responsible for broken/bricked devices, lost info/data, the zombie apocalypse, or any other negative thing that may come from you attempting this method. I have used this method to root my developer edition note edge, as have several others, and if anything good comes form this it's totally my fault ^_^ ... negative stuff tho is on you.
IMPORTANT!!!!! if you do not have the DEVELOPER EDITION of this phone, leave this thread now, nothing here can help you it will only kill your phone!!!
ok so this info is on the site already but spread among several posts/threads, now here it is all in one place, and actually in the Verizon thread since this method only works with Verizon Developer Edition of the phone.
WHAT YOU NEED:
Samsung Drivers (download KIES3 from their site is probably easiest way to get latest versions)
http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu
http://twrp.me/devices/samsunggalaxynote4qualcomm.html
Any version of Odin will work.
optional: extsdcardfix.zip i didn't use this, not sure where to pick it up from, look around XDA sure its here somewhere.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:
1. install KIES3 from Samsung official site.
2. plug in your phone and let KIES recognize the phone (grats now you know you have the latest drivers)
3. turn off the phone and enter into Odin Download Mode. (hold power + home + vol down, press vol up on next screen with warning about custom OS)
4. Open Odin then plug in your phone and wait for it to show connected in Odin.
5. place the TWRP file you downloaded from their official site into the AP slot (PDA slot on older versions of Odin)
6. make sure not to adjust the check marks on the left side, Auto reboot and f.reset time should be the only two checked.
7. hit start and wait for it to complete.
8. power the phone on while holding up on the volume key and home buttons at the same time.
9. once in TWRP go to settings, turn off the screen off and turn the brightness all the way down. (this version of TWRP is designed for the note 4, it has two very bright while bars on the sides when used on the note edge that may cause damage to the screen if left on for long periods of time, also there is a glitch with sleep where you cant get it to wake properly so turning this off is a workaround to make the phone never sleep while in TWRP)
10. go to the install option on TWRP and add the UpdateSupersu.zip and if you downloaded extsdcardfix.zip click add more zips then select that file.
11. swipe right to install the files then reboot when done.
12. SuperSU may or may not be installed on the device after this, if it is skip this step and go to 13, if not install it from the market (one of my phones it was installed on, the other it wasn't (i have two of this phone) however since you have already installed the binary update files the market version will update and run fine if it isn't there)
13. Open SuperSU. at this point it may ask for you to update the binary again, if not skip to 14, if it does choose normal mode not the twrp mode. it will work fine then the device will restart.
14. Open SuperSU. when you open SuperSu this time it will tell you Knox was detected, would you like to attempt to disable, choose yes. it may get stuck trying to disable it, if it does just click the "recent apps" button on the bottom left of the phone, click "close all" then reopen SuperSu and do it again. the second time always works (least for me and the others who used this method)
15. Enjoy your rooted Verizon Galaxy Note Edge Developer Edition.
THINGS YOU WILL WANT TO KNOW:
1. I personally had trouble with Xposed and the WANAM modules, specifically my phone stopped taking phone calls and texts (internet still worked fine) havent had time to test it out and see if it was Xposed or WANAM, or even if it was just the settings i picked, if someone wants to do that and let me know I will add that info to this post.
2. I didn't use the extsdcardfix.zip, Titanuim Backup wont write to SD card, however ES File Explorer works with the SD card just fine.
any other problems you come across let me know so we can catalog them here.
I don't have the dev edition, but it's great to see progress. It gives me hope for my regular Verizon note edge. maybe some day.. probably not though.
This won't help the regular edition. This is only possible because the developer edition has an unlocked bootloader. Unfortunately until someone cracks the bootloader and and can unlock it you won't see root using this method. I have read that the note 4 was able to gain temporary root with kingroot latest version but loses root on reboot. That may lead to retail versions gaining full root at some point.

they have gained root on every variant but VZW, so that sys they have gotten by the bootloader so why not Verizon why is it so difficult?
They have temp root on verizon last i heard, and they didnt beat the bootloader to gain root on the at&t version it was an exploit. Im sure they are pretty close, however root alone wont get you able to install roms. Unless someone picks up the safestrap project or something similar Im afraid samsung is dead to rom modders on verizon and at&t.

How do I know if I have the developer edition of the phone?
It will say inder the battery "developer device" however if you didnt order It you probably dont have It. Unless you got a second hand one that person may have had developer edition. But the one from verizon definitely isnt it.

I have this installed on my rooted DE, and I still cant move/write to ext-sd using Root Explorer, etc.
I even tried other fixes from the Play store.
Any ideas?

I'm so confused about the developer edition coz i have one from Verizon SM-N915V unlock and i want to root it .
Is it possible to use this method ?

No. Using this method on the retail version of the phone will give you a very expensive paper weight.

Anyone have a developer edition to sell? Been looking around and cannot find one anywhere.
How I know if my device is developer edition? mine SM-915V UD.
SKU: SMN915VZKE

Hey... Any Note Edge Developer Edition owners out there! A bootloader-unlock method has been devised that is compatible with the Note Edge Retail Edition... however, they need a Dev Edition owner to step forward and volunteer some files to be used to generate the exploit. It will cost you nothing.... you run a script to generate your CID, and you use a PC app to back up your aboot partition, which is something all "Developer Edition" owners should have done before anything else anyway. PM me if you're interested in helping out. In the meantime... use the PhoneInfo app to find which bootloader is currently installed on your phone (you have to use this app... it's not in Settings > Phone Info.)
While I'm here... I'll answer this question...

If you bought it at a carrier location (Verizon, Verizon affiliate, BestBuy, etc)... you don't have one. The Dev Editions had to be purchased direct from Samsung for full retail price.
If you bought it new direct from Samsung... you'd know it (it'd be on the invoice, etc).
If you got it used... you probably paid more than average retail, and the seller would have advertised it as a Dev Edition. If you're still unsure... reboot to download mode and look for "Developer" or "Unlocked" somewhere. Also, I think they printed "Developer Device" on the body of the phone, under the battery, on most of them.

Im running stock Gingerbread, never been rooted.
What I am looking for is a simple one click method to root the phone for a few minutes so I can make a few tweaks and then unroot it.
Yes, Im aware that I can use the Odin method to root without tripping the flash counter, make my tweaks, and then use another Odin package to unroot it, however, there are a few problems with this, in order to keep this brief, I dont want to go into all the details but suffice it to say, I dont want root constantly enabled, I just want to enable it briefly and I dont want to install CWM so I can reset the flash counter and then (if its even possible) have to re-install the 3e recovery menu EVERY time I need root for something briefly.
Im looking for something along the lines of Super One Click (shortfuse.org) or UnlockRoot (www.unlockroot.com) where I can hit root, the phone reboots, I do what I need to do, hit unroot and the phone reboots unrooted. Both of these tools, needless to say, do NOT work (even tho they are listed as supported devices). Remember also, this is the ATT Note SGH-I717 so when looking thru the device lists supported by other software, make sure to look for the right Note .
i don't think those methods exist like they did with say the Samsung infuse. I used the Odin way, just as easy as super one click...but you mentioned you didn't want to use it so I'm not sure what you can do. Why not just stay rooted? And there is a flash counter reset just so you know

Im well aware of how easy the pre-rooted kernel is to flash via Odin, its the unrooting process that is a pain.
I dont want to stay rooted and I dont want to use Odin, the process of reverting back to unrooted is too much of a pain in the ass.
My guess is that there is no easy one click process or it would have been posted already.
Its a shame, one of the huge benefits with Android was how easy it was to gain root to tweak OS level things and then revert back to an unrooted state.
I used SuperOneClick without any issues whatsoever? What, is it not supposed to work or something?

Erm, ok, Id love to know how you did...
First, what phone do you have (carrier). I am using the ATT Note.
If we are on the same page there, what settings do I need to enable on the phone and/or SuperOneClick?
On my phone, I enabled USB Debugging, in SuperOneClick, I left everything default, I click the Root button and on step 7 a bunch of gobbly gook appears (there is no log created so I cant just copy and paste some of the text) and it just stops. I left it sitting for a few minutes and nothing happened to either the phone or SuperOneClick.

I have two Notes. The N7000 I rooted using SoC on GB, doing exactly what you've done. The i717 was exactly the same. USB debugging enabled, plugged in and USB not mounted. MY computer is picky about USB ports so I use the same port and cable for every phone.
Grab the latest SoC (my sig has a link) and extract. Install Kies to get the USB drivers, then uninstall Kies and leave the drivers installed. Plug in the phone and let it install. Once it's done, run SoC (not as an administrator), select 'auto' for the exploit and click 'root'.
You'll get the usual 'found a gingerbread', 'sending 149 zerglings' etc. Then it tells you the 'overseer found a path' and after a few more steps reboots with root. Took me all of about 40 seconds.
I use AT&T phones unlocked in Australia, so we are using the same handset. This method doesn't work for ICS, you'll need to flash SU with CWM for that.
Let me know if I can help any more
Yea, unfortunately, it doesnt work for me.
I have the Samsung drivers installed (I know because when I plug in my phone under device manager, it shows my phone as correctly installed and I get a pop up from windows asking me whether I want to open a folder to browse the phones' contents - and Kies sees the phone).
I even tried uninstalling Kies but keeping the driver installed (Windows still asks me whether I want to browse the phone contents).
I also tried removing the sd card, altho this should not affect the process.
When I run SOC, I maximize the window so I can read the text and basically, when it gets to step 7, it sends 149 zerglings, then it waits 40 seconds, then it sends 189 zerglings, waits 40 seconds, then it says that it doesnt have write permissions and asks me whether I have root or not (not in a dialog box but in the text on the right hand side of the screen - I can only assume that it is initially trying to get a shell/temporary root so that it can do what it needs to for a permanent root), then it tries to push some files to the phone and then just completely stops. I let it sit for Id say 10 minutes with no progress.
The only thing that maybe is creating a problem is that the phone seems to be automounting, when I plug in the storage, it doesnt ask me what I want to do, it just mounts the device. I poked around in the settings and couldnt find any setting to disable this but Im not 100% sure this is a problem as the Captivate did the same, when you enabled USB debugging, it would automount the device.
Oh, and when I plug in the USB cable, the notifications bar shows 'MTP Initializing' and a few seconds later, 'MTP Mode'.
And Im using Super One Click version 2.3.3

Did you ever get a working solution to your question? I am in the same position: wanting to temporarily root my phone, do my tweaks and then re-root it so that I can run the POS enterprise mail application that has a policy to check for "root".
I would think that this should be much easier than it seems, but perhaps not
Thanks,

I havent found any solutions yet...
SuperOneClick did not work for me either. I have used it on 3 other phones with no issue so I dunno.
I recently got my new Verizon Galaxy S4 and decided to play around with it. I got it rooted fine and got a few apps on there (like Titanium backup) and decided that, since I would eventually want to play around with ROMs, I would want to unlock the phone.
I looked around and found there were some options for me, the one I chose being the "all in one" option that roots, unlocks and installs a custom recovery mode for you. I went through this process and now get nothing but the Downloader Mode (could not do normal boot). Even if I pop out the battery and try to reboot it, I get this screen.
I later found that apparently the ME7 model currently will not accept attempts to unlock the phone and install a custom ROM or recovery menu. How do I fix this? I tried using Odin, but it doesn't recognize the phone as being connected. I am currently trying other methods like Kies, to see if there is any way to at least to an emergency recovery and get it back to normal.
EDIT: Ran into the same issue with Kies as I did with Odin, it does not see anything connected to the computer.
Do you have the correct drivers installed? Does adb recognize the device? You're in Odin mode when you try to use Odin to push something? I believe with ME7 you can Odin back to the official stuff.

You need to make sure you have the drivers for the phone and have a solid USB connection (I prefer the rear of a tower)
sent from my GE gs4
I ended up getting it to work. I had to go here:
http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/inf/sb/CS-013541.htm
and get files to get the computer to recognize the device. Even afterwards, Keis had no idea what was going on, and Odin saw it and was able to install a stock firmware I downloaded earlier, saving the phone.
For now I will be satisfied with just root access and will wait for ROM capabilities.
I hate to hijack a thread but I'm stuck here. My GS 4 (Vzw) was supposedly successfully rooted using TWRP, but now I have no way to enter any sort of recovery. The package I downloaded for the root does not have an Odin version to run. I've been getting the endless prompts to install the 4.3 update but there is no way to do this on my phone. I get the same "Could not do normal boot. Odin mode. Write protection enabled" message with the downloading screen. I try to boot into recovery via CWM or Goomanager but it always goes to the same screen. I can't make any backups or restore now either or I would just do a factory reset. Any ideas? I'm on VRUAME7.
Um.... there's no recovery available with ME7.... are you on the MDK bootloader?

You're said that you're on ME7 - what you need to do is to flash the "No wipe" ME7 ROM onto your phone. It's in the Development forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301259
You've got to update to MI1 before you can install the 4.3 update (MJ7).
ONLY flash files intended for whatever release you're running. You can't mix and match, can't go backwards, and can't skip updates.
Theres also an ml1 factory image in the dev section.
Hit thanks if I helped you out. Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way. Sent via tapatalk.

On that page I linked to, look for this:
Solution:
Download and run the Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility so Windows* properly recognizes the SMBus controller.
Get the proper driver download according to your OS, then install it. This should allow Odin to see the phone for you to install a clean copy of the stock ROM onto the phone.
If you want more details I am sorry to say I cannot provide them. When things involve me fixing my own technology, it is a lot of rapid-fire troubleshooting and I just go with what sticks without really memorizing what I did (so if I run into this issue again, I have to re-research).

I recently bought a new note 3 and was using h20 before so I went and got a sim card for it and could call and text but not get data(it won't save any apn settings), so I looked on some forums and tried re activating it off of someone's suggestion and now it's just stuck in activation mode, so I went to a cell phone store and was told that they did a partial root with a sim unlock and my only option was to flash or I could take the chance and try to re root the phone but if I don't use the same system that was used to do the partial root I could crash the system. OK so I don't know a lot about this stuff I can root a phone if I find good enough information but I've never flashed a phone before so my question is when I re activated the phone did it take away the partial root? The only thing that's weird is I can't save any apn settings so that made me assume it was flashed but I don't know a lot about this stuff, what should I do. ............

First I have to ask, are you on Sprint or are you a different carrier ? The sim card is for international use, so are you trying to use it here in the states ? Before you root you need to get to a stock unrooted activated OS, to flash one here is a link to help with that http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-sprint/general/samsung-note-3-rom-flashin-basics-t2896440 . As for being stuck in activation you might try removing the sim card and try to activate without it. Have you tried the Galaxy Tools app here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/not.../app-one-click-hotspot-enabler-menus-t2816159 with this app you can change APN's and restore HFA activation mode. Also sometimes activation takes a while depending on cell site traffic.

the phone came without a sim card so I just bought a h20 sim but gsm doesn'twork on this phone so I'll probably have to use page plus
, is there a way to root my phone without using a computer? My laptop was broken last week, so it won't crash the system if I root it? The guy at the cell phone store said that it's possible I could crash the system since there was a partial
root done before. I didn't see any su files on my phone but I can't see all my files. I definitely need to root this phone, the activation still doesn't work with the sim out and I am just trying to use page plus, h20 ect in the states, how can I get a stock activated OS or get mine activated thank you for your help.

Yes there is a couple of ways. First what OS are you running ? Is it stock KitKat NAB 4.3, NC5 4.4.2 or NH& 4.4.4 ? Is the device still under warranty, KNOX warranty 0x0 (this can be found by putting the device in download mode, completely power down the device. Press and hold the power button, menu button, and volume DOWN button at the same time a screen will come up then press the volume UP button. Read the KNOX warranty, to get out of download mode press and hold the power button till the device reboots then let go.)
First if you are on NAB or NC5 you can use Towel root WITHOUT tripping KNOX here is the link http://towelroot.org/ there is a PC download and a install video. If you are on NH7 4.4.4 then only CF-auto root will work here is the link http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ and it WILL trip KNOX warranty 0x1 when you root your phone. If your KNOX warranty is tripped 0x1 ( like mine ) then is doesn't matter just use CF-auto root it works for any version of android.
If your KNOX warranty is NOT tripped 0x0, and you are running NAB OR NC5. If your phone has internet access you can download Towel root or and install. To you use a laptop, download Towel root to PC desktop, then just connect the device to the laptop via your charging cable to a USB port. A box will come up click on open to view files and then click on sd card. Copy and paste the Towel root file the sd card, then unplug the phone. Now use a root type file explorer like ES file explorer or Root explorer go to sd card then find the towel root file click on it and install. Any attempt to root NH7 4.4.4 will trip KNOX ( with the exception of rooting NH7 with a NC5 kernel and then reinstall an NH7 kernel )
Now if your Knox warranty is tripped 0x1, then it doesn't matter just download CF-auto root. There is a couple of ways, first you can use CF-autroot in place of Towel root in the above method. OR with a laptop you odin flash the .tar file in the CF-auto root zip above. Here is a link to guide you through using odin to flash to device http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-sprint/general/samsung-note-3-rom-flashin-basics-t2896440 Enjoy !!!

I'm running 4.4.4 nh7, I'm not worried about tripping Knox cause it's a used phone and not under warranty, thank you for the CF-autoroot link, I have just a couple newbie questions, I downloaded the CF-ROOT and put it in download mode but it just kept saying downloading and didn't do anything I pressed and held the power+home+volume down but if i hold the power+home+volume up it'll take me to another screen were i do abd updates and stuff like that so what am i doing wrong do i have tohave a sd card cause i don'thaveone in the phone but I'm going to go get one now. I can use a friend's computer if need be. I don't know a lot about flashing I just know that's the term they use when you want to unlock your phone to a different carrier. I originally wanted to use H2O since I already have the plan ect but my next choice would be page plus but I've never done a flash before so I'm new to the whole idea but I have common sense so I can manage with the right advice, so after I do the CL-root what's the next step to get it setup on H2O or Pageplus? I already downloaded a lot of apps for after the root including the Samsungtool that I found on here which is a awesome app, and again I really appreciate all the help and advice.

OK to get to download mode, completely power down the phone. If the device is on press and hold the power button when a box comes up click power off the phone then wait till it shuts down completely a small vibration is usually the last thing that happens. Now ( push the power + menu + volume down buttons at he same time ). A screen will come up with a yellow triangle on it, next push only the volume up button. The download screen should come up it looks like this.
Next you should have already downloaded the CF-auto root, and the odin files on your PC desktop. Right click the odin zip and extract it to your desktop. Click on the extracted odin file it should have three files in it right click on the top file and click run as administrator odin should open up. Now connect your phone to your PC via the USB charging cable, a box in the upper left hand corner of odin will light up and say COM: doesn't matter what color it is just shows a connection was made. Next there is a button on the right that says PL or PDA click on it a new box will open, click on desktop, then click on the CF-auto file it will open, then click on the .tar file then click open, it should move to the box to the right of PDA button. Ok your all set don't touch anything else just click start. It will take a minute or two then odin will say pass above the COM: box. Now wait a minute, if the device doesn't reboot by it's self then pull the cable and push and hold the power button once it boots up go to the app drawer and look for the SuperSu.

okay I got the phone rooted completely and I've been trying to use the galaxytools app to activate the phone but it's not wanting to activate,I even put in the different sales code that was explained in the "online instructions" and that didn't work, what's the next step to get it to work on page plus? Or can I change the system from 4.4.4 to 4.4.2 so I can get it activated?

You can go back to 4.4.2 from 4.4.4. Now that you have a little experience flashing go to my thread and just substitute and flash NC5 4.4.2 with odin here is the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-sprint/general/samsung-note-3-rom-flashin-basics-t2896440 now once you flash NC5 you will back to stock so you will have to root again, but that's half the fun right !!!

I'm sorry for the late reply, I checked out the thread and downloaded the file from this link "Full stock tar.md5 files for MJ4, NAB, NC5 and NH7 here.", so I'm just double checking to make sure I'm right cause I didn't see one exactly 4.4.2 and I downloaded another one "N900PVPUCNC5_N900PSPTCNC5_N900PVPUCNC5_HOME.tar.md5.crdownload" "N900PVPUCNC5_N900PSPTCNC5_N900PVPUCNC5_HOME.tar.zip"
so wich file should I use and wich file should I download, I know how to flash now thanks to you but the fear not knowing the whole concept alwaysmakes me double question everything, thank you so much again lol I hope this thread helps other peopl in the future.

Yes "N900PVPUCNC5_N900PSPTCNC5_N900PVPUCNC5_HOME.tar.zip" is 4.4.2 . Just download file and then extract it to your desktop that will change it from a zip file to a .tar file and then it will be ready to flash with odin.
N900PVPUCNC5_N900PSPTCNC5_N900PVPUCNC5_HOME.tar.md5 is a computer generated numeric representation of the "N900PVPUCNC5_N900PSPTCNC5_N900PVPUCNC5_HOME.tar.zip" file. The md5 file is only a few KB's in size, it is used the check the .tar.zip file if there is a problem. The 4.4.2 NC5 .tar.zip should be about 1.42GB to 1.5GB in size .
I have seen all the posts about being able to root Lolipop 5.0.1 with Kingroot. When I try this on my phone, it fails over and over. Any suggestions?
I've tried everything I can think of and tried what others have suggested. I can't get the apk or the windows version to work. Personally I'm a bit leary of Kingroot anyway.

At least you are not the only one having the problem as I thought I was.
If you're on OF1, I believe Kingroot isnt working currently. OC1 works from experience and people on the forums on the desktop. Check your build number. If on OC1, maybe you didn't turn on USB debugging?
I wish I could say it was something as simple as USB debugging. I'm on OC1 and took the update from 4.4.2 via Kies. That was my fault. My understanding was by doing that or taking the OTA update from Verizon it permenantly locks the bootloader.
I've tried every version of Kingmaster...apk will get to 52% and stop. The only thing I can think of is that I have not clicked the correct buttons on the PC version which is very possible. I have yet to find any English instructions for it. If anyone has them detailed please send.
Thanks

I get the same thing. Kingroot gets to around 50% and then quits. I do feel that nothing is permanent, and with all the savvy techies out there, someone will figure out some sort of exploit. It is unfair for Verizon to lock down their phones to discourage people from switching carriers.
Well, read the EULA..
That said, Kingroot is still hit and miss.on OC1. OF1 came out in the past few weeks so I wouldn't expect anything for atleast a month.
Yep. It's unfortunate. For me, the reason I need to root is that I can't send texts with Tmo Simi a Verizon phone. This only happens on Tmo 4G. When signal drops to 3G or E, I can send text. I thought I would switch the antenna setting to stay on 3G. There is another post about this workaround somewhere on this forum.
Oh well. Maybe I'll find someone to trade me for a Tmobile S4.
Hello, I've tried running the apk of KingRoot on OC1 and it gets to usually 33% before its done so no root here either. I tried to download the desktop version and it won't even come up, so I guess we're stuck for now. I'm like a few others here, I don't fully trust KingRoot so I hope someone way smarter than me can come up with a program to root!

I tested on my OC1, KingRoot is working perfectly. I can't root it initially, but after changing another computer it works brilliantly this morning
Lots of people have talked about success with OC1 and Kingroot. Doesn't appear to work with OF1 though.
Sounds great...can you let us know the exact steps? I'll give it another shot. For me I guess since it's not in English I have found it tough.
Thanks

I was in the same boat a week or so ago. I had been rooted but had a problem trying to flash another rom. I had to Odin back to stock but when I tried to root again the kingroot app no longer works. This is what worked for me. I went to the kingroot site and let Google translate the home page. You have to download the root installer zip, which to me, was the hardest part. I just used trial and error by clicking on boxes on the installer page until I got it downloaded. If needed I can download it again and post the methods, step by step.

I'll give it another look. I tried Google Translate but it's still doesn't completely translate. ..at least for me. I just find it odd that there is not at least clear English instructions somewhere. Even if it was just a listing of screen shots.

Initially I was having the same issue while using KingRoot. This was what I did to make it work:
1. Uninstall KingRoot, restart your computer
2. Re-download kingroot from kingroot.net, choose " [windows logo] 下载电脑版本 "
3. Install KingRoot, run it
4. Turn on I545 usb debugging, plug in to your computer and you will see kingroot is running.
5. After loading you will see some chinese words 尚未Root。。。。。 or 发现新的root档案 。。。。 etc, click on the green button to start rooting and you will get it done.
6. I successfully have done more than 300pc I545 yesterday, however, sometimes if it keeps on loading without rooting what you need to do is to restart your computer and re-do it again
I can understand chinese, you may show me picture if you need me to translate
I'm going to try that method when I get home from work today. The app doesn't work for me and the desktop I was having issues with but resolved those by uninstalling KingRoot then downloading it again . It ran that time but never rooted, must've ran the desktop version close to 10 times with no luck. The program tried to root, it would run for about 5-10 minutes then it would show a pic of a phone with a red X on the screen, no root.
I think this is the problem...I see no green button when Kingroot loads and I've plugged my phone in.

I tried again probably 15 times. Uninstalled, reinstalled, shut down PC several times, it just does not work. I don't know what's going on but I can't get it to root. The desktop version gets to about 60% every time before saying no root. Once again a no go but I am curious to see if anyone else is still being successful at it. I almost thought that maybe Kingroot took down the root for the S4 for some reason, not sure why they'd do that but its a possibility I guess.

i got my S4 like 2 months ago with of course lollipop 5.0.1 installed and I had to try rooting via Kingroot several times before the root was successful except now i soft-bricked de-rooting to install an update. I believe i read somewhere to keep trying and it eventually works, i used the PC version of Kingroot. Good luck

Hi, I'm having issues with step 5. There isn't any green button that comes up. The first time I run the kingroot after reinstalling it, it shows just a blue button after thinking for several seconds.
(I can't figure out how to attach an image to my post, and apperently links aren't allowed either...) i.imgur.com/8BilQtT.png
After clicking the blue button, it goes to this screen: i.imgur.com/wScf2TT.png
There's a checkmark there, but my phone is not rooted. It did install KrHelper4Pc to my phone though.
Subsequent runs of kingroot (without reinstalling) show this after thinking for several seconds: i.imgur.com/HVmqOLm.png
I've tried this several times and the exact same thing happens each time.
Hey peeps, i also have this cricket version and I am currently trying to get some of the secure checks off, and I came across an apk that is normally only available to chinese customers, I guess they have to allow bootloader unlocks, so I ran across this file and installed it it opens and seems to have allowed for custom boot image, which if correct is good news, however I flashed an unofficial recovery just to see how that went and still got the secure check error but only on recovery this time, which i also discovered if you get this error while testing a recovery don't fret you have a couple of options the easiest for me i found that once you get that message reboot into download mode by holding power/vol down/home button once it starts to boot release power while still holding the other buttons then when prompted press volume up to enter download mode from here you can reflash the original recovery orrrrr their seems to be a loophole in the secure check here that i have found to be handy. you can just hold power from here as if you will reboot while having the phone plugged up to usb power mine was on pc usb. As soon as phone vibrates let go of power you should now be at the charging screen wait til you get the grahpic of the battery actually charging now hold power again to reboot seems to work. Now below I will post link to the apk i used for bootloader unlock, I am interested to see if other peeps have success with the cricket version, so we can move on to cracking the remaining checks to get a custom recovery on this device. This CROM does for sure work on some S6 devices and it looks like it does on ours too, but for whatever reason i still get checks for recovery anyhow a more experienced dev if you have this device please take a look and see for yourself.
I also wanted to know if this would possibly work if I was to unpack the recovery.img from a custom recovery then repack and sign using the releasekey.x509.pem contained in /etc/security/otacerts.zip? Would it show up as authorized then perhaps? From download mode currently my readout is current binary: custom
current status: custom
Reacvtivation lock: OFF
Qualcomm secureboot: Enable (CSB)
Secure Download : Enabled
so i guess the apk is not working afterall, but maybe someone can decompile it like im about to do just to see if their is another method hidden within.

YES - now THAT is handy... THANK YOU... best bit of "fool the machine" that I've come across... very helpful - not sure how you stumbled upon it but great find... thanks again...
Stumbled I did indeed lmao dumb luck really. I do however see this as a potential security hole which should be explored by someone more knowledgeable than myself.

that's funny, however->> potential security hole = potential exploit...
I'll take it if it's a "get in anyway I can" - could prove very useful... dummy up about it, as you have to be physically local to run it (if it is) an exploit - not something that can be implemented remotely, as far as I can tell...
why do you the think they call it ROOT - ing... savvy?...
this is a good thing for us on this side of the phone...
Ya you can also just pull battery. Plug in charger wait for charging graphics then turn on I think as well....also another tidbit I zeroed my sec partition and it did not brick...all is well I did this to see what happened when entering download more but nothing was different I had viewed it in a hex editor and it had in plain text stuff about download mode and security checks I thought it may be the download mode partition however it is not I'm not sure what purpose it served if nothing else you can gain a small bit of space by doing so.

I'm trying to get all apks from variants that allowed oem unlock from settings/developer settings I think of we can trash our settings and replace with those we may be in business without having to hex edit the aboot and/or boot. I was lookin through some database files as well and I think something I read may be telling the byte that controls security checks not completely sure just yet but it sure seems that way...also I think if we could change the csc app to a diferent variants it could be needed. Not sure but just a few ideas.

I too have the SM-530A with 5.1.1 and have been looking for about a month now for ways to unlock the bootloader and root. I am far from a developer and know some about rooting as I have done several HTC phones , which are considerably easier than Samsung. I found a forum called GSM, there I found some links to the stock firmware , stock kernel and other firmwares. They are also available for a cost at another site but can't remember. I do have them on file on my computer .There is another system that is supposed to root and unlock the bootloader called , Samsung Octoplus which is a small box connected to the PC and software used. Possibly there is someone on this forum that knows of that system and might have it . I have semi rooted with KingRoot .apk and flashed the stock kernel with flashify following some instructions from a contributor at the GSM forum, but failed to get a custom recovery on. I still get the same thing in download mode or odin mode of the fastboot stops working there and get "waiting on any devices".
Now can any one here add to this? Seems most any of the variants of the SM-530 can be unlocked and rooted except this one .
Well I do have full root on mine but bootloader is locked up the octoplus is for numerous uses for multiple devices it can revive bricked devices and unlock some etc. Not sure about its use for unlocking the bootloader though.

I guess though if you brick it in process of trying to unlock then at least you can recover it

toxinburn, would you please explain the process for the custom recovery and what did you use? I tried all of the TWRP's and CWM's that I could find none would flash, and too the process for superSU , that I could not get my phone would not allow any of the above and give all kinds of errors but would never lock up.
I just followed the root guide in forums but as far as a custom recovery we can't use until we get the bootloader unlocked

I may end up getting a octoplus box just so I can safely experiment more because it looks like we will require a dirty method of unlocking which requires hex editing the factory images like aboot and boot.
