[Q] Did I get a bargain or screwed over? - Xperia Z2 Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm in the UK and we have a place call Cash Converters, it's known for selling second hand goods.
I bought myself a Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet LTE 16gb in mint condition with all the accsessories and box.
I paid just under £150.
I was running Lollipop but for me personally the device was slow. I downgraded to KitKat and it's great, fast as hell. really impressed!
I'm not rooted and I'm on the latest KitKat before the Lollipop update.
I removed all the bloatware 1 by 1 and removed the Google apps I wasn't going to use.
I'll tell you now, it's reallly fast.
well to my question; Because I'm on the latest KitKat before Lollipop - is there a way I can root my device?
PS: I don't want to spam the forum so I'll ask here - what sort of battery life are XDA Members getting with their Z2 Tablet?

Lollipop is faster than Kitkat on this device.
Must have been something else than the firmware which slowed your device down.

Well, it depends on the version of KK. If it's 4.4.2 the root process is definitely easy by running the easy root (towel root) program. After that, the towel root author got hired by Sony, so, so much for getting any simple root processes.
As with 4.4.4, you can get root, but you'll need either to use;
a) Bootloader unlocked, and a modified Boot Image Ramdisk to get full System RW
b) Install Nutz dual recovery (easier with bootloader unlocked)
With LolliPop, I already had bootloader unlocked, so I installed the latest Dual Recovery by Nutz, and installed the latest pre-rooted LolliPop build.
One note on unlocking your bootloader if you decide to go that method. Back up your DRM keys first. Then if you ever decide to go back to stock, you can reflash them. Note it only works initially with 4.4.2 Builds if I'm not mistaken. To be honest, I have them backed up, but don't really notice them missing. Supposed t maybe do something with camera or video enhancements, but I can't tell the difference.
As with speed and battery, I can't tell the difference between the 2 versions. Benchmarks are about the same. Battery life is subjective depending on how you use the tab.

You can unlock your bootloader with any version. In the forums there is an app called Flashtool if I'm not mistaken that you can use to relock the bootloader.
Read this;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2747676
Be aware it'll wipe your /Data partition so you'll need to re-install your downloaded apps. Maybe docs and photos as well.

Aha. Similar to mine. I wound up getting a Demo model (unknowingly). Had the same "no" for bootloader. I wound up flashing a different "Ftf" file using Flashtool. Put a different region Rom on it. Workedfor a couple of folks, unless you have one of the carrier brands like Verizon, ATT, Tesla, etc.
So try flashing a 4.4.2 FTF file from a different region. See if it installs an unlockable bootloader. It's worth shot.

Having issues copying the link, but go to the regular z2 forum, then the cross development forum. There is a thread for "xperiafirm". This is a Pc app that will download almost every version Ftf file for Sony devices. Find your device (511, 521, etc) and download a couple different region Ftf files.
Flash using Flashtool that I sent you a link to.

OK, so here's the scoop.
1. Don't flash any files from our forums (zip) files. They are for custom recoveries.
2. Use the experiafirm software to download specific ftf files for your device. I'm mobile now and can't paste a link. You can find the Pc app by going to the Z2 phone forum, then go to Sony cross development. There you find the ExperiaFirm Pc app. Install it to a Windows Pc (instructions are in the post). Select your device on the left (Z2 Tablet), select specific model, and you should get all available factory firmwares on the right.
3. Select a firmware to download to Pc. Pay attention to the carrier versions. You probably don't want these. By carrier, I mean phone companies like Orange, Tesla, Version, etc. These are devices that are sold by the phone providers and usually you can't unlock the bootloader.
You want just normal Ftf files, like Vk, Ru, Baltic, etc. Should be about 30 or so available for your device.

thanks for all your help but I've gave up.
the link you told me about, xperiafirm, I couldn't get the ftf files. NO matter what I done.
I messed my Z2 LTE Tablet up and it was in a boot loop.
I fixed it with PC Companion and left it at that.
I have a Sony Xperia M2 too that I couldn't unlock it's bootloader, I kept getting "failed - command not succeed" so I just give up.
I have literally done everything and I still can't do it.
all I want is to calibrate my battery on my Z2 LTE Tablet & Sony Xperia M2.
is there something else I can try?
I'm running stock on both of them (latest in the UK through Sony's PC Companion) and I've disabled all the crap Sony apps and Google apps.
they're both fast now.
ugh.

Wow! Sorry experiafirm wasn't working for you. When I get time I'll install it here. It was working fine before I left Moscow. Currently on extended trip to care for elderly parents in the states. In the original post it stated a couple thing for the Pc,like recent Microsoft.net for example. Generally you just select your device on the left, then hit. "check all" in the upper right. Double click a firmware and it should download (if I remember correctly)

yeah mate I tried that and it wasn't downloading any ftf files, I kept getting "file" formats and trying to flash them after creating with flashtool was a nightmare!
but thanks for your help, I appreciate it. I think I'm done though, I have charged my device all night and most of the day and both of them are sitting on 100% full.
so I'm happy.
I also found a way to calibrate my battery on both devices without root too. so all is good.

any chance you can help me? I'm trying again.
what firmware should I flash to try and get my bootloader unlocked?????

You have to bundle the files downloaded from XperiaFirm, into an FTF, you do this with Flashtool:

You can skip the parts about Decrypting, because XperiFirm does that for you.

[Q] Some questions from a new owner.

Got my XZU last Saturday and decided today to keep it. Being long out of the Sony-world (last was an XS, now coming from a Find 5), I've got some questions. I'm also going to search for the infos, but I feel a single thread for "my stuff" makes it easier for me, so please be kind.
So, for the current state, here's the device's information.
- Sony Xperia Z Ultra (C6833), black
- running on Vodafone DE
- Android version 4.2.2
- Baseband version 8974-AAAAANAZQ-10220006-09
- Kernel 3.4.0-perf-gde8296d-02194-ga2561a5
- Build 14.1.B.1.510
- The device shows me an update to 14.2.A.1.136
Questions:
1) Do Sony's official updates only update Android + Sony Apps or are there also firmware updates included?
2) I want to root and install a custom ROM, should I start from the current build or should I upgrade to $something first?
3) I've read that KitKat is restricting SDcard usage for non-system apps. Do custom 4.4 ROMs work around this(,yet) or should I update to 4.3 max?
4) I probably won't use the camera much, if at all, still, most custom ROMs can't get the camera quality on a level the stock ROM has, so how bad is it on this device?
5) is the PowerCover CP12 available somewhere in the EU? It's "out of stock" in all big shops I looked at in .de,.at,.ch and the Twitter-Team wasn't really helpful. Ordering from outside the EU would be possible, but pretty much guaranteed to get stuck at the customs where the next office is ~50km away and doesn't have work-friendly times at all.
6) About screen protectors: a) can I apply them over the shatter shield and if so b) will input by pens or something still work on a decent level?
7) is there a prefered solution of recoveries on this device or does it not matter at all, if I'd choose CWM or TWRP(or is there something else entirely)?
8) are there known problems in general with custom ROMs regarding external hardware? I'd like to use my "SmartWireless Headset Pro", my "SmartWatch (1)" and TV-Out
That's it for now, thanks for any help
1) The 136 update is a firmware update (to Android 4.3), but they also push out updates for their Sony apps.
2) You have to update to at least 290 (Android 4.3) if you don't want to lose your IMEI when you flash a custom ROM. Also note that you'll lose your IMEI if you downgrade from 136/290 to anything older. There are no real reasons to downgrade though, but just keep that in mind. It's easily fixable, so it's not the end of the world if you do it.
3) Yes, there's a workaround to get SD card working on KitKat (you just have to replace one file)
4) The camera is still bad on custom ROMs. It might get better with official Sony KitKat.
5) I have no idea.
6) a) Yes. b) Yes.
7) We've got double recovery, meaning you'll get both CWR and TWRP when you flash recovery, so use the one you prefer. (Vol Up for CWR and Vol Down for TWRP)
8) I think the only known issue on 136 is that Bluetooth might be a little wonky, but i'm not sure, so be sure to read around here since there's a thread about it.
Thank you for that.
In regard to 1), I meant firmware updates of hardware, f.e. the Find5 received some updates regarding the touchscreen.
As for 2), so there's currently no reason not to install the latest official Sony update, meaning it's also rootable without too much hassle? What would be the consequences of a lost IMEI?

Bugfixes are included in firmware updates, so they don't release an update to fix one minor thing. The Find5 receives updates every two weeks, if i'm not mistaken?
There's really no reason to update to 136 (the newest) if you're going to flash a custom ROM. Rooting is fairly easy if your bootloader is unlocked, and it only takes a couple of minutes, but it's a little more complicated if your bootloader is locked. Luckily, you're on 510, meaning it's even easier to root, and once you've rooted 510, make a backup of your TA partition. It holds all of your unique DRM files that makes X-Reality work etc. You'll lose the TA partition when you unlock the bootloader, so that's why you have to make a backup of it before you unlock it. Once you've done that, update to 290, unlock the bootloader, root it and do whatever you'd like to do.
Thanks again.
Now rooting worked(+OTA keeper from the Playstore), so did creating the TA backup.
Having a glance over the custom ROMs available as of now, I think I'd like to stay on rooted stock until Omni (official) comes around.
So what would be the (better) procedure to get latest Sony ROM running? Use Sony's updater and hope OTA keeper works or unlock, install recovery and flash a pre-rooted FTF?

OTA Root Keeper doesn't work on 4.3, so you'll lose root no matter what you do. Are you still on 510, or have you updated to something else?
You have your TA partition backed up now (recommend you to upload it to your Drive or Dropbox), so you can unlock the bootloader without permanently losing the TA partition. It'll delete it when you unlock the bootloader, but you can easily restore it again in case you have to send it in for repairs. Rooting 290 and everything else becomes so much easier and faster the second your BL is unlocked, so head over to the General section and look for Jackie's root guide and see if that's something you might want to do...
...or you can simply stay with the firmware you're on now, granted it's not the most stable firmware version, but it'll save you a lot of time. Official KitKat is also scheduled for release this month, so you can:
A ) Stay on current firmware and wait for official Sony KitKat
B ) Go all out and flash a custom ROM
I'm currently running the GPe ROM, and I can highly recommend it. It's solid as a rock with no bugs.
Any questions?

Yes, did that and mirrored it over a few systems. BTW, if I'd ever go back to stock, would the TA-p get changed so I'd need to back it up again or does it stay the way it is over the phone's lifetime?

No problem, I had my Xperia S unlocked, so I now the procedure. Only question related to that: I read that for the Z1(?) there's a minimal version one should update to before unlocking the BL, if you don't camera stops working or something - so, is this also a problem on the ZU or has this already been fixed?

So to be clear, when you're talking about the GPe ROM, you're meaning this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2608708 ?
So if I'd like to try this, I'd need to:
1. unlock bootloader
2. install recovery
3. take NAND backup
4. Flash .290 fw
5. flash this ROM
Correct?

The bootloader unlocking doesn't need to be the first step since you can flash Recovery on a locked bootloader. You can do everything except the ROM flashing on a locked bootloader. But yeah, that looks fine to me. Be sure to download the tweaked GPe version that includes Recovery and SD fix.
If you can't bother making a NAND:
- Unlock the bootloader
- Update to 290
- Flash boot.img (includes recovery)
- Boot into recovery and flash (VOL UP when LED lights up)
- Done.
Thanks again, could/would you link me to a .290 ftf for germany/europe/generic? The ones I found are either for other regions or the links seem to be down.

Thank you very much for all your help, GPe is up and running smoothly now.
Apart from anything looking pretty huge, guessing different DPI settings compared to Sony's values, it's fine so far. One question though: under display settings it says X-Reality is on. Is that just cosmetics, since at no point I restored the TA-backup. If it's "fake", is it possible to restore TA and have it working or would that "trash" the system and restore should only be done in case of a stock re-install?

Yeah, the leaked footage from the Z2 KitKat build shows the option to use double tap to wake, so it looks like we'll get it. It's a kernel feature, so it'll work on mostly anything out there.

Bricked? Help!

HI - just got my ZU and I wanted to test the GPe ported version and now things won't come on. First I rooted it and it was working fine. Installed superSU. Then I went to utilities and booted into CWM. From there flashed the GPe rom. Then it came on a dialogue saying that root might be lost and ask if I want to fix - clicked yes => brick! I saw two instructions one for hard and the other for soft. Is this bricked? any thoughts? Thanks!

Did you unlock the bootloader? I think that needs to be done before flashing, also you would want to backup the TA partition prior to unlocking the bootloader.

I think I was in the same situation. If you can hold volume up/down on the phone and plug in a usb cable plugged into your pc and see a light come on you may be in luck. If so follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2428319
You need to get the a .ftf file for your phone and go into flashboot mode and install it using the guide in post 2 I believe.
Yes, sounds like you haven't unlocked the boot loader.
Do you know what the # of the software was before the flash?
Once you have it booting again do a TA backup, then unlock the boot loader. This will save your DRM keys

I don't think its entirely bricked as vibration still comes on when i hold down the power button - when holding down the power+vol down vibration also comes on but doesn't do anything. Also, when connected to charger the notification lights was also blinking. Will test this once I get home. Thanks!!!

The software number ends in 108 and I just updated it to 4.4.4 and yes, I'm totally guilty of this and have not unlocked the bootloader. I looked around the forum and remember seeing a post saying if in the back it say "Xperia" then your device has unlocked bootloader and flash away - I flashed away and it sounded like a good idea in my mind at the time :-/
Question: I bought mine from Amazon as an international version with no US warranty - Other than Bravia engine would DRM do anything else? Don't shoot me for this but I tested Bravia ported on another device before and honestly couldn't tell the difference. Thanks!

I can only speak from experience regarding the GPe model, which ended up having broken camera when updated beyond 4.4.2 with bootloader unlocked. Regardless it is cheap insurance since as far as I know there is not anyway to get it back after unlocking.

as said... I would back it up just in case Sony break something with an unlocked BL like has happened on both the Z1 and the ZU GPe with the camera
To put your mind at ease - no it's not bricked, that the BL wont load an unsigned kernel.

Can you point me to a link? I downloaded the file in the thread but it is ftd. The flashtool would not recognnize this and it doesn't show up with my device. I read through 11 pages of the post but couldnt find anything on there or any link to a ftf to drop in the firmware folder. Of note, Flashtool doesn't work correctly on Win 8.1 (I found out the hard way and Win7 works fine).

Always remember: bevore unlocking BACKUP TA PARTITION!
Never do this whithout :good:
Softbricked, huh ^^? Easy method below .
In PC Compendium (PC Compendium must know your device)
-go to the first one in the list and open it
-top left one, Klick on that
-my device dont works as it should (blue text) - click
-follow instructions
alternative - Sony Update Service (support ended last month, try to download somewhere else):
-Select your Device
-Connect it whith pressing Vol. down
-Sleep for about 25 minutes
Update Service german version found: http://www.chip.de/downloads/Sony-Mobile-Update-Service_44169249.html
If this doesn`t work because it says that this is not a supported device you have to flash a ftf via flashtool
Sorry i dont have a PC in my near ^^ because of PC Compendium
Hopefully the above works since that looks easy.
The post with the FTF files is the same thread I used to get the FTF file for mt device(6806 I believe).
As for Windows 8/8.1 you need to go into the start up settings by going into the Run tool wither by pressing the Windows key +R and typing in Windows key + R, type in "shutdown.exe /r /o /f /t 00" without the quotes and there should be a start up setting option you can choose. After you select that the PC should reboot and you will see and option to be able to use unsigned driver(I think it's option 7) and then after selecting that you can install all the needed drivers from the flash tool.
After that fun download the FTF file for you device if you haven't already and fire up the flashtool and plug in your device to the PC holding the Volume down button to put the phone in flash mode.
Once you do that hit the lightning looking button in the flashtool and select flash mode.
In the prompt thing that pops up direct the source folder to where the ftf file is or put it in the location it shows. You should see your device in the device list once it sees the firmware. Select the firmware and make sure all the "Wipe" options are selected and hit that flash button.
Hopefully I didn't skip anything. I mainly wrote the above from what I remember and anyone can feel free to jump in and correct me or call me stupid if needed.:highfive:
Yep all the above looks correct, there is a flashtool guide / video in either of the FTF download threads

I would give it another shot with bootloader unlocked first if it were my phone. The Sony version has more development at this point, but the GPe shold be seeing some more love here in the near future. Whatever you decide I am glad you were able to get it sorted out.

Im my own defense, I didn't give up after only one try. Plus now that towelroot is out the GPe can be rooted before unlocking bootloader, which may have swayed me to keep GPe had I known it would be released.
Update: my GPe came home and after playing with it for two days I totally love it!!! I noticed that battery life is not as good comparing to stamina mode. I noticed while using ZU is the "smart sync" feature when things are synced when you unlock it as opposed to constantly syncing. I looked around in market but didn't see anything like that. All these battery apps just tell you to lower screen brightness setting, shut off WiFi/data, etc .. All of which you can do yourself without the app (which defeats the purpose cause now you have another background app eating up battery). Any battery apps you guys recommend for gpe??
it's fairly hard to completely brick these devices, the secret is to not to panic and make things worse, and to take your time when considering how to recover!
If you get XperiFirm you can get the FTF for any Xperia variant, I used it last night to get the latest firmware for my C6802

p.s. I destroyed my TA partition the first day I got my XZU, so I don't know what I'm missing. Yes, I unlocked my bootloader without doing enough research, I didn't realise you couldn't simply generate some new DRM keys, that once gone gone forever :-/

[Q] Verizon Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet (SGP561)

Recently picked it up, an SGP561. I have some questions and I'd love all of the help I can get.
1. How to install a custom ROM on it (just in case). If I can't get the updated Sony firmware, I might as well jump to an Android 5 ROM once they're stable.
2. How to update the stock firmware. Everytime I go to the System Update thing it says there was an "Error during DM Session"? I'd really like to update to 4.4.4 stock to get some of those nifty Sony features.
3. Anyway to get the damn thing to shut up when I turn it on? I'm not using it on a data network, just WiFi, but I like having the option, but everytime I start the damn thing up (from being completely off) it makes a calling new and does through this automated annoying thing asking me about purchasing a calling pin, and it does that for about 7 minutes and makes me about go insane.
Anyway, thanks guys. Boxes of donuts to all of those who answer.
(Already rooted the thing)
Hi Grayson,
1. Currently, there is no way to unlock the SGP561's bootloader. So basicly, you can't install any custom rom that is not based on stock rom (or use custom kernel).
2. Mine gets the same error. But you can download the latest ftf file for SGP561 and flash it manually using flashtool (sadly, the latest version is still at 4.4.2).
3. I face the similar situation, the tablet automatically dial some number to activate it when it boots up. All I did was just simply removing the Verizon SIM card (I don't use data anyway).
1. Well ****. That's actually very concerning... This tablet probably won't ever see Android 5.0 then... unless some genius out there cracks this bootloader deal. I know how Verizon is with things.. or I'll see an outdated version of Android a year after all other variants get it. Are there any ROM options?
2. How do you go about doing that? Pardon the noobishness.
3. Thanks! I didn't even know that there was a SIM card in there in the first place. That was a great help. Same here though.

1. Yeah, I know how that feels. You bought one of the top high-end tablet and then figured out that it has the outdated software and there is no way to update. I've been looking for other solutions for months but still found nothing.
2. The latest version is now 17.1.D.0.437. You can check in your tablet settings to know whether yours is on the latest or not. If it's not the following links may help.
Here is the instruction how to use flashtool (just in case you have no idea about it): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2054486
And here is the link for the latest ftf file for SGP561: https://mega.co.nz/#!VZYHRAKT!wky8U_6G9aB4XctdfKMIaJQZtdlnWTtNv0pNLlgh0AM (I got from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2-tablet/help/flashed-wrong-boot-bricked-t2839828)
Well this all sucks a lot. Why can't they just leave the bootloader unlocked... hopefully this tablet wasn't just a massive waste of money.

I got mine two days ago, also have the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2, which I use at the office, but I needed something that had a smaller screen, was light, and had 4G, and the Sony ticked the right boxes. I WISH I could use Xposed but it can't write to /System. I have it rooted and got rid of some bloat, and the only thing I really want now is for Xposed to work.
You guys don't think Verizon will update this tablet to Lollipop?
Hi I just updated my tablet to lollipop and I'm having problems with it. I tried downloading the ftf for kitkat above but he kinks we're dead. Do you still have it by chance?
Still no options to unlock the Verizon's SGP561 ?

Verizon Xperia Z2 Tablet will not update. Help, please.

Hello,
I just purchased a Sony Xperia Z2 32GB Tablet. I don't have Verizon, and since it is Wifi, I thought I would be able to use it just for Wifi. Well, I can use it for Wifi but I cannot update. I keep getting an error message. So, I think I just wasted a bunch of money, since this will be of no use to me now.
Do any of you have any experience to help me out? I would surely appreciate it. I don't know too much about this stuff.
Thank you in advance for any and all help!
What error message are you getting.
You do have a reliable connection?
Which firmware is on your tablet now?
Why would it be useless? There is no critical feature in 5.02 lollipop.

When I go to Settings > System Updates, I get "Error during DM session".
Yes, I have a very good connection on 5GHz and a very good ASUS router. I am next to the router and my network speeds are +75 Mbps.
I cannot seem to find and install PS4 Remote Play in the Google Store. That is one of the main reasons I bought it. Plus, I like to be updated to the latest version.

I seriously doubt that you have a paperweight. Have you looked into doing the update via PC Companion instead of WiFi. If all else fails, you can flash the generic Sony firmware (FTF). It wont root your tablet, but it will wipe it and bring it back to factory state like if it was being turned on for the very first time. I don't know your level of comfort but Sony tablets are pretty simple to understand ...as long as you're ready to do a little homework. Lots of Verizon customers are *****in about that error you got...your tablet isn't broken or anything

The tablet is set to factory settings right now, it is just that it is Verizon's factory settings. If I did the FTF, will it wipe out the Verizon stuff and give me the ability to update to the latest Android version? I do not know too much about tablets, but I will certainly be willing to give anything a shot. I really want it to work (well, maybe work is the wrong term since it is a running perfect, really) with the newest update.
Would you be willing to point me in the right direction, or give me a few pointers?

You really need to move all the FTF files from the old directory to the new directory or the message wont go away. Also install the drivers for your tablet. The exe for the drivers is inside the install directory of flashtool. I cant give you the exact path as my Flashtool is installed on a different computer. I don't believe you need Java installed.

That's extremely strange, which firmware did you download?? Did it flash successfully, after the flash did the tablet take a good 5-10 min to reboot. Did you build your own FTF or downloaded another one...something is definitely not right..
The tablet does take a good 7-10 min to flash properly. image.sin is the longest.

Flashtools said it flashed successfully, but it did not go through a long time load before it rebooted. I am using Selected Bundle for Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet (SGP561). FW release : 23.0.1.E.0.208. Customization : USA. I followed the tutorials and created my own FTF. Do I have to check anything else other than the suff in Flashmode? On the screen while I am flashing in Androxyde, it reads "Upgrading, do not disconnect device from PC. Software status: Official". It says that I can unplug it, but the tablet still reads, "Upgrading, do not disconnect device from PC. Software status: Official".
After that is complete, I unplug, restart and it splashes to Verizon logo and all of the bloatware is still there and cannot update the system. I am stuck! Am I able to do this on a Verizon tablet?

Cannot update Xperia Z3 Compact tablet (SGP641) to Marshmellow. Help, please.

Hello. I just received an Xperia Z3 Compact tablet (SGP641) compact tablet that I bought used. It is unlocked. I don't know if that means it is rooted, as well, as I am new to this.
Anyhow, I tried to update the tablet through the device itself, but it says it is up to date at version 5.0. So, then I try to update it using the Xperia companion on my PC. When I try, it gives me an error message that reads: "Update failed. The device contains modified software that cannot be updated. Error code: UEGetPhoneInfoRootedDevice
UE_2003"
I have no idea what this means. Does this mean that I cannot update the tablet, at all? Can I "un-root" the tablet? Basically, what are my options at this point? I would just like to update to its latest Android version. The battery life is not what I was expecting. I mean, it drains over 20% in an hour. Is that normal? I am hoping an update might help this out a bit.
Thank you in advance for any and all help, advice and suggestions. I really don't know anything about this, so I really would appreciate all the help I can get.
Thanks!
Edit:
So, it turns out that the device has been rooted and the bootloader unlocked. The seller just conveniently forgot to mentioned this during the sales process. Very frustrating. What can I do?
No the battery drain is not normal. I did not get an update either, here in The Netherlands. So I flashed a stock German version instead and changed the language afterwards. You would need Flashtool for that. The Xperia Blog has a good tutorial for Flashtool, but I guess you can also find it on xda. If you flash a stock version you will be unrooted as well.
If you wish, you can also lock the bootloader again in Flashtool.
Since your bootloader had been unlocked your DRM keys are probably lost, resulting in lower quality photos at low light conditions.

Could you possibly explain more about flashing to stock, please? I am going to search and check out what you recommended, I just thought in the mean time you (or some other helpful poster) could clue me in a bit more.
Do you know if I can use the Xperia companion tool to do a software repair? It is an option within the program. I am just wondering if that will re-lock it and allow me to update.
Thank you very much, again, for your help! I really appreciate it.
I am not sure if Xperia Companion still works with an unlocked bootloader. But you can always give it a try. Flashtool is a much more powerful tool as it allows you to choose the rom you prefer, even if it is a downgrade.

Do you if there is any way to tell what, if anything, is on the device...as far as custom ROMs, rooted, unlocked boot loader...etc?
In Settings -> About you can access diagnostics with some basic info. More advanced diagnostics can be accessed if you install a phone dialer (I tried Pixelphone Dialer) and dial *#*#service#*#*. In Service Tests -> Security you can find your bootloader status. If it is locked it says Marlin [Key OK][Active] and the same for the other items. In addition you can find lots of other info there.

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond and help.
Will I mess anything up if I go ahead and flash a stock version or try to relock it if, by chance, it is not locked, rooted or anything?
Nope, but make sure you flash a correct ftf for your model. I'd advise you to wipe data, cache and apps log in Flashtool to make sure you have a fresh start. Any Marshmallow stock rom would be ok.

I can find that just by searching for the model number (SGP641), correct?
Flashtool will recognize your model as well.

Thank you so much. I am going to try and do it now. I will post my results, just in case someone else may be having the same issue.

I am having a rough time finding out what to do. The only thing that I can see is the Taiwanese version, which is the model the SGP641 is, but I am confused about how to do it. Can I just flash it to the file that is on Xperia blog, or do I have to downgrade it first?
Edit:
So, it turns out that the device has been rooted and the bootloader unlocked. The seller just conveniently forgot to mentioned this during the sales process. Very frustrating. What can I do?
Well, as the Dutch philosopher Johan Cruyff said: every disadvantage has its advantage. It depends on what you want. If you want to stay rooted, you can flash a prerooted Marshmallow rom for your model from recovery. Usually you can enter recovery by pressing volume down or up during boot until the led changes color. Root is attractive because you can remove bloatware and install costumizations. If you do not want root you can flash a stock rom with Flashtool.
dude you want only to update marshmallow?if not,i can give u 2 options for a veeery stable and battery friendly tablet.
