[Q] Official wireless backplate + what case? - Samsung Galaxy Alpha

I can't find which case I should buy for my phone when using the wireless charging back cover. Does anyone have any good recommendations?

I thought I would go ahead and answer my own question. For those who are interested in having some kind of case with the Galaxy Alpha and who also want the wireless charging backplate, I am here to confirm that the Spigen Neo Hybrid case for the Galaxy Alpha does fit with the official Samsung backplace and it does charge. The fit is snug however, the lip does cover it as if there was no extra thickness. I have three other covers from Korea and they all aren't able to cover the phone with the wireless charging backplate. I am glad that it works.
For those who never used this brand of cases, make sure to leave on the plastic ring part and don't try to do it in two stages. I thought I had to put the rubber part on and then the ring, however, if you do that, you will most likely break the ring. Instead, just put the phone in the case all at once.

will the official extended battery work with this ?

No, I don't think so. The extended battery requires a special modified case because the battery is too fat and the official charger plate requires the regular battery, as there is no room for a bigger battery. However, in this case, I would recommend getting one of those internal pieces that you can put between the battery and the cover and attach it to the right spot, like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Alpha-SlimPWRcard-Receiver-Samsung-integrated/dp/B00QMIM6EM
I have never used it, but I assume it would work. The only reason why it might not is if it isn't long enough to go over the bigger battery, but I'd say it is worth a try. Qi wireless charging is fantastic! I am going to build one into a desk I bought at the thrift store.

silicone case and standard dock

Fellow asteemed geeks,
How snug a fit is the Standard cradle? Will a silicone cover work with one without having to remove it?
If folks do not believe it will work, I'll skip the purchase of the cradle. I want a cover that just stays on 24*7.

Not unless the cover is "wafer-thin" in my experience.
There is an insert that is removable in each of the docks, but it doesn't give you enough room with most covers.
Sorry. I wish they had planned better ... say multiple inserts of differing thicknesses.
You can remove the standard dock insert which will give you room to dock the phone with a case. With the Body Glove Mirage (soft) and Incipio Feather, I can dock the phone without that top plate installed. Downside is that it looks tacky and looks to put a lot of stress on the charging port on the phone since the top plate supports the weight of the phone.
I ended up getting the 'Ruggedized Battery Cover plate' from Motorola. There is a thread around here that details how you can get Motorola to send you one for free, although with the Atrix going EOL, it might not still be available. With this adapter plate you can dock the phone with pretty much any case that is not overly bulky (ie OtterBox Defender). Try searching for the thread on the 'Ruggedized battery cover' to find the exact instructions and part numbers you need.

Working charging dock for xperia zu WITH a case on?

I recently got the Nillkin hard cover case which is extremely thin. Unfortunately, even with this case, it does not work with my ebay charging dock. Links to both products:
Case:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EEAVJ1Q/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Charging dock:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/221302293102?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
With the largest "attachment" to the dock - 9.5mm, the case will go in and even clip magnetically, but will not charge. If I remove the attachment (ultra wide), it will not stay in, but does charge.
If anyone knows a solution or has a charging dock that will work with this sized case, please post a link!
Well what you can do it tear up the case and the cable out, you will not get the dock functionality but you wont have to remove the cover or open the flap everytime.
If you are creative enough, make your own dock and install the cable (from original dock) into it!

Had that case, and the official dock. Problem is the case side's raises the phone up so a tiny bit but enough so that it'll just sit right above the charger but won't properly connect. Modifying the dock or making one seems a lot more hassle than cutting the case, so I went and cut the case's charger slot so that it's wider, and also make a long rectangular cut along the back (about aslong and wide as my pinky finger) so I can slide it into the dock (small adapter, forgot if i tried the big wider one or not, might have made the back cutout unncessary though).
I don't think any of the cases are designed to be used with the dock. All the back-only cases like this all look the same - all designed it to cover up as much as possible. And all the chinese docks look like the official dock. So i don't think there's any dock/case you can buy as a solution... unless there is one since i last check two months ago.
But anyways, to me a dock is more necessary than a case, so 90% of a case is better than no case.

Wireless Charging Battery Cover is Thicker ?

Hi on my note 3 I decided to be clever and purchase a wireless rear battery cover ... you know not the stick on QI charging sticker that goes onto the battery but the expensive complete replacement cover that replaces the battery cover and adds wireless charging toi the note 3
Well ... just for the record it is THICKER than a normal battery cover so you cant fit the note into a case OTTERBOX Defender in my example
just thought this should be on record ... so the advice is to save money and get the cheapers internal stick on QI receiver and not the replacement rear cover
hopes this is of use and save somebody cash and problems when fitting the note 3 into a protective case if its got the charging battery cover
The best way to save cash is just buy one wireless card. more cheap and no additional thicker.

This one is cheap and it works.... and you use the original back cover, so you can use a normal case. Please be advised that is creates just a little bump just below the camera.

Have you read anywhere that indicates a slim case still works? I have the Incipio case on it and don't want to lose its use but want the wireless charging. Thanks.

It should fit because the bump is not that big [though you better do some research first] . I used a UAG navigator on mine and that case was a tight fitting case and it still fit.

try folding a piece of paper to .5mm thickness, maybe half inch square and put it inside your phone on the upper part of the Note 3's battery, put back cover on, then try the otterbox case.....
look in post no. 1996 of this thread so you have an idea how the receiver looks like.
goodluck

Wireless Charging Back Cover

Black one in stock now: http://www.mobilefun.com/47945-official-samsung-galaxy-alpha-qi-wireless-charging-cover-black.htm

For wireless charging how does this exactly work?
It works by induction. You need a special charging station (read: a square box that is resting on your nightstand from now on), where you can put your phone on. You don't have to fiddle with plugs.
The charging station works with a standard USB connection and for your phone you need the above mentioned back cover, with is a complete replacement for the existing backplate. The special back cover contains all the electronics and contact pins to connect with the phones battery.
looks like it make the phone super thick!!! Plus cant use with any cases

Of course, they have to place the coil somewhere, it's just a sacrifice you have to make for having the convenience. Also most flexable rubber/silicone cases do work because they stretch (I just prefer to go without them for the sake of ruining the design of the phone).
It should be arriving here by end of week and I'll be sure to take a few pics for you guys.
FYI, I have purchased a wireless charging back for every single Samsung device I have ever owned so I have plenty of experience (S3, S4, Note 3, and currently S5)
I was running the wireless charging back on my LG G3 so I have some experience as well. That back only added 1 millimeter to the thickness...I measured it. Just better design. I have the alpha and I'm currently testing next to the iPhone 6. Liking both phones alot. Need to test battery life

The most disappointing thing about the wireless charging back cover, other than its extra thickness which makes it less flush, is on the standard cover, the SAMSUNG logo is shiny and embossed, giving the same effect as the metallic edging. On the wireless charging cover, its matte and flat like a cheap tacky plastic print. Not at all in-keeping with the quality of the rest of the phone.

Hmm this is quite strange, usually Samsung does not cheap out on those wireless charging back covers and try to make it as identical to original as possible (at least on all the models I've used them on). Perhaps they didn't spend as much into this one due to the lack of popularity/demand for this device. Still surprises me though, it should cost cheaper in that case as well.
@jerflash: Actually on the S5 the gain in thickness is almost not noticeable. My dad uses one and switched backcovers and you don't see it.
Inductive coils are super thin copperwires that need next to no room for themselves.
I bought one of these for my note 3 and even though it did give it some weight and thickness, the battery cover was thick enough that the camera lens would not come in contact when places on a flat surface which was nice.

That is the wireless charging cover of the Alpha right? Can you tell me if it has magnets in it for alignment? I'm trying to build a car dock with magnetic attachment like the Nexus 5 and wonder if this cover for the Alpha would let me do that.

I am. As far as am aware there are no magnets in the cover but a metal plate is there.

And it works? I emailed Samsung and they told me there are no qi chafgers that work with the Alpha. If youre saying it works I might actually buy it and build a magnetic charger for it so I can dock in my car. Thanks!
They also confirmed thr Alpha has OIS.

It definitely works (using it daily at work) so whoever you talked to has no idea what they're talking about. Wouldn't be the first time honestly.
That wireless charging cover looks super ugly and so doesn't fit the amazing design of the rest of the pone. Not sure what Samsung was thinking when making such a poor looking charging cover.

Thay confirmed OIS,i try to find out anywhere this info but I only find in one US site nowhere else
is it possable that Alpha has OIS
Can you shere this info with us m8
Could you please tell me whether the extra thickness of the cover makes it impossible to fit a case over it? I have in mind a flip case.
Samsung do not yet list a wireless charging back on their web site for the Galaxy Alpha. I wonder if this is a picture of the back for the bigger battery.
I got my official wireless charging back. Unfortunately, it does make the phone slightly thicker which means cases are not going to fit over it. I tried a cheap plastic soft case which I thought would stretch enough to fit but it didn't. So I had better not drop my phone.....
Otherwise, the wireless charging works fine with a Nokia DT desktop charger.

[MOD] Cheap wireless charging (~$15USD)

I wanted wireless charging, but the only one available (from fonesalesman.com) costs about $80USD to my door.
So, I bought an S5 pad and used some copper tape I had lying around. NOTE: Copper tape (or at least the one I have) is only conductive on one side because of the adhesive. I rolled the ends up to make large contacts for the terminals on the phone and wireless charging pad.
I also removed the golden pins from the wireless charging pad because they were a bit thick. If you do this, be careful not to remove the silver pad underneath (I almost did).
See pictures attached, they're pretty explanatory.
The current pad I am using is a bit thick, and have ordered a new one, but it works! And it doesn't cost the earth.
Hope this helps people.
Also, see attached the wireless charging pad I got.
It works, but its thick.
If anyone has some thin wireless charging pads, please recommend.
How does it look with the back cover on? Im thinking about doing this with the extended battery. Since there is some room available to the left it might fit better? Can you take a picture from the side so that one can see how thick the charger thing is?

Hey guys,
It doesn't look as good as the post from DimonVideo, but as I said, I'm waiting on a thinner wireless model.
I'll put some pictures up later when I get home.

I'm planning on getting this one.
Can't post the link to amazon as I do not have the minimum posts to do so.
Search this:
Alpha SlimPWRcard - 0.5mm Qi Receiver for Samsung Galaxy Alpha with integrated NFC coil
Those are the only model available for the Alpha. But since I don't live in USA, it would cost at least $50USD for me. So, I put together this thing
Where you get the pinout of the alpha wireless charger?
