I have bought a galaxy alpha four days ago. The device was working very well the first days with no problems. Excellent phone. It was getting warm, but I know this is normal for phones.
However the warm became worse, at the point the display was heating so much to risk to burn my finger. The display is now constantly getting warm even when doing simple tasks (whatsapp, browsing internet) and it is uncomfortable to use.
If I try to do a intensive task (like playing a game), even only for a few minutes, then it becomes hot and it makes the display almost untouchable. The top part of the display is especially affected by the problem. The back cover in plastic is also warm, but nothing that prevents me from safely holding the device in my hand
I have tried to turn off the phone and let it to cool down. However, after turning on the device again, the phone gets warm like before.
Is all of this normal? I'm aware that every phone becomes hot with use, but I believe my alpha is exxaggerated. I think it's a problem of faulty device, but I'd like to know your opinions first before to go back to the shop.
Thank you for answering

I say return it and get a replacement. Yes, the phone does heat up from both Kitkat and Lollipop builds but not to the point where it "burns" fingers.

hi had a similar problem like this with my alpha phone as well not to the degree where it felt like the screen was burning my finger just that it was unusually warm what i did to solve this was to disable every and anything that's unnecessary that's running in the background that came on my phone, disable all gesture feature as well as set the screen brightness to auto, change launchers, make sure WIFI NFC and bluetooth are disabled when not in use and if you do not use LTE on your phone disable it as well doing all of this should help to speed up ,increase battery life and hopefully make your phone cooler
I would suggest a factory reset and a day of testing after. If its still the same go for service.

Update: I have followed your suggestions and The alpha looks to be fine now. I'll bring It back to the shop if the heat happens again.
Thank you for your attention.
I already make a 6-8 time root my Alpha 850F
a test same builds from eudemony 502,with problem google.play services..google.music...google.play.store stoped working in mean time was lose root & TWRPrecovery than again flash stock 502 throuth odin,& again ...
when Oscan rom appair I flashed this Aroma rom & have no problem at all with google app & rom boot exellent
but in this rom & Oscan SGS6 rom I have very little antutu score 34000 ,i know that is with samo old scripts on my Alpha.
I make again flash via Odin stock XEF Firmware ,than root & after that TWRP
now SGS6 rom work perfect,I get 53000 antutu ,phone is cold etc 3-4 SOT
I`m very satisfied
If your phone was to hot,let him finish the update ,sync, apk play store update
dont turn off wifi or data after update phone will be cool down

Hello,
I know, I know... old problem, yet there is still no definite answer to the question of continous random freezes. My HD2 is also experiencing them (worked fine for about 3 months, during which it never fell down whatsoever)
but!!!
I knew from a few days before the first freeze that something was wrong. The bottom of the phone was getting incredibly warm while heavily using the hardware (watching HD vids, browsing web etc.) Me being stupid did not think of it till today. So once again, knowing that my HD2 would freeze, I plugged it in to recharge the battery. This time - enlightened by the thought of old overheating problem - I put it right next to the opened window - it was -1 *C outside. Results? No freeze! Battery fully charged for the first time without a random reset! In my case this is definitely temperature-related problem, it could possibly not be just mine.
The question is: How to lower the temperature? I don't feel like using my phone in a fridge or moving to subpolar areas.
EDIT @28.02
So far my theory is correct. Once I kept the screen on for 10 minutes and was far enough away from the window, the phone restarted itself (and I was not abusing the hardware; I was, in fact, just writing a text message.) Normally it would shut down right after the attempt to load and stabilize the main screen, but since I put it right next to the window at the PIN window, it cooled down and now works fine again.

Maybe it is the battery, you could try an inexpensive replacement one from ebay.
Well, ebay is off the limits for me, but I will surely try some cheaper counterpart. It's been over a week and thus far my theory is proving to be correct - low temperature = no freezes.
The heat might also be caused by lots of stuff running in the background - have you checked this out as well?
Of course I did - Task Manager is one of the 3 apps on the main screen. I always make sure nothing is running, be it an app, or an unnecessary process.
But yes, some of the applications do increase the temperature, however I find that normal... well, as long as the heat does not make my HD2 shut down!
EDIT @ 09.03:
Waiting for a new batt to arrive. I just hope this is just some minor energy output problem and that's why my hd2 is overheating, leading to shutting down.
Got my new battery from a pretty decent company. Normally after turning off the phone and even reattaching the battery I'd have problems turning it on again (would have took me several attempts); however this time it went very smooth.
Any update on use with the new battery? I have the same overheating/screen lock problem with my HD2. Mine has done so after taking a call and having the phone up to my ear for several minutes.
Unfortunately it wasn't the battery. The most common circumstances in which my HD2 freezes is trying to use the internet, followed by playing music from the Sense player. The only thing left to do is to return it.
I declare HTC HD2 and the HTC tech support piece of junk.
Final edit:
Sold my HD2 and bought Desire HD. <3 Android!
I got my 920 today and I'm quite happy with it. However I'm facing a weird issue. My screen is noticeably flickering. At first I tried to restart the phone a few times, and at last with a soft reset I got rid of it in some areas (eg the unlock screen) but in some others (typing an address in the browser, typing into Bing search) it's still there, even tho it's not very noticeable anymore. However I'm quite picky so it annoys me a bit, also I don't think it's fair that I have to use a phone behaving this way. Anybody else having this? Workarounds of any sort? Otherwise I guess this guy is going back to the store...
Edit: I found out that this issue pretty much comes and goes randomly, I happen to have it for a few hours then it goes away, so on so forth. I really don't know if I'll ever be able to get the phone replaced if the issue is so hard to be reproduced.
Same intermittent problem

You're not going crazy as I have the same issue with my 920. It is VERY intermittent and probably happens about once every 3 weeks I guess.
I'll wake the phone to check it and it seems that the display is not working fully and looks interlaced and flickering. No loss of functionality and when I put it to sleep and wake it up a few times it's fine and back to normal. Appears to be an intermittent issue with either the display or drivers but no way to reproduce unless you separately take a video/photo of the screen when it is in this state when you are returning it to the store for an exchange. For me it doesn't happen enough to really worry me although it is slightly annoying...

Man, this is driving me nuts. I noticed it does it every time the phone reaches a somewhat hotter temperature (like body temperature, a couple minutes of usage normally) or when it's plugged. When the battery is 100% loaded it usually stops, but then after a few minutes it comes back, very annoying. Since it does it like 90% of the time I guess the guys at the shop will notice it, when I'm at max brightness it's like a freaking strobe, I can't take this any longer, makes my head ache. One thing I also noticed is the fact that the lowest light setting available is still way brighter than when on auto in a dark room: low looks more like medium, so to speak. Is this ok?
Today I'm bringing it back to the shop anyway, I'll keep you posted.
Update: I got my phone replaced. We had to open 3 boxes before finding a non flickering one, insane. For the last try I decided to open a white one and it was flawless, weird...
Are you guys in cold areas or keep your phones in cold areas? By cold I mean under 65 F. I have noticed in certain types of LCD's that if they are cold they seem to slow in refresh rate. Try warming your phone up and see if it gets better.

Not really my case I guess, actually the phone kept acting up even after an hour usage, so it was plenty hot. No problems with new one so far, fingers crossed...
Dear all,
I've been waiting a little before rooting and installing a new ROM to make sure I don't need to return my phone for any reason. (So, it is stock now, no root, locked bootloader, KNOX still there, etc.)
So, far I've noticed three small problems, which I don't know if they are universal or just mine:
Sometimes when I get a call, the touch screen is irresponsive. If I press the lock/power button twice, it seems to work again. (I now have set up to press home to answer.)
It often feels a bit warm, more than I'd expect. (I have it in a case, though, a Spigen Slim Armor. It fits perfectly though.) But this happens sometimes when it is just sitting, not playing games. It is not really hot, but I can feel it warm in my pocket.
Sometimes I get a pop between songs. See this post
(So, at least one person also has the last problem.)
I can live with any of the problems above, but I'd hesitate to have a defective unit which can have bigger problems later on. Is any of the above an issue for you? Any suggestions if I should exchange the phone?
Thanks!
Luis
Do you remember when were the times when the screen was unresponsive?
I've read somewhere that sometimes when the screen is woken up and is under some pressure this will happen, and the only way is to do what you did. It's not uncommon in touchscreen phones though, so I wouldn't worry about it.
The verge app was broken until the most recent app update. Also, the s5 seems to refuse allowing Dashlane's accessibility service from working properly. So no more auto filling passwords for me. Ugh. I hoped rooting might help but it didn't. Now I really can't wait for custom ROMs to start appearing. Samsung, you make great hardware (like amoled displays) but your software sucks. Even the software on my Samsung TV is stupid.
Yes on two out of three!

The unresponsive screen is more than a little issue, it is being reported all over the web, and get's more severe over time. I'm thinking that it is a bad proximity sensor defect, either firmware, hardware or software. Some people are reporting along with myself that sometimes for no apparent reason, the screen will not turn on even though the phone is completely operational! This has happened to me four times now and I am stock with very few apps on my phone, five total games and Pandora. I do use a substitute launcher that I've used for years but I don't believe that would be the issue since others report the same issue with stock launcher.
The pop or skipping you speak of in sound happens to many of us who stream music in our automobiles. It even happens on the note3. The fix is simple for that one though! Turn the screen on. I was told that with many of the streaming software music programs that the phones CPU goes to sleep and does not offer enough processing power to the music program. I stream all day via bluetooth to my Auto's sound system and it will usually start to skip, click or whatever after the phone has been untouched for about twenty minutes. The second I turn the screen on the problem alleviates itself. You can find even more information by googling that one, in fact both of those! The heat one I have not had, both with stock battery and zero lemon high capacity battery. The phone very rarely get's warm. However, when I was using wireless charging it would get warm even after charging was complete but I believe that is a normal event with QI type tech.
Hey everyone. I literally just got my G5 in the mail a couple hours ago and went through the setup process. It was plainly obvious that the phone was really hot. Has anyone else noticed this? I don't know if this is a common thing or if it may just be my phone....
My LG G5 is not received.So I don't know.When I get it,I will answer this.
Mine gets a little warm after heavy use and while charging, but I wouldn't call it hot. Try pulling the battery and see if the battery is causing the heat.
Mine also got hot during the setup process. I was adding my gmail account and fiddling around with it while it was charging and it got noticeably hot. Haven't had a problem since then.
I was playing with one in the ATT store and it seemed to be getting warm on the back just to the left of the fingerprint reader (if looking at the back). I wouldn't say it was hot, just warm.
Most phones heat up a bit during setup, just like some do during updating. I'm guessing it may be a little more noticeable with the metal design.
Verizon unit here and mine was also hot when setting up but quickly cooled down. I will add that i did not have my phone plugged in when setting it up.
Mine was really hot during the setup process. If I'm doing nothing with the screen off, it's cool. But doing anything with it, generates more heat than I would like. Taking photos feels like I'm holding a hand warmer.
I read LG isn't aggressively throttling the CPU like Samsung so at this point that's what I'm assuming is going on.
It would be nice if there was a straight forward way to compare temperatures objectively instead of subjective descriptions like warm, little warm, hot, too hot.
Honestly I wouldn't worry about it too much unless it happens after your initial device set up. Normally with the LG's I've noticed that they get hot during a first boot and setup. The only other time I've experienced it like that is if I'm playing a game or on Skype.

after setup, (not charging) installing all my apps it got warm but not where i would have to put it down.
it seem that this phone have a lot of problem............... should i go pick up my package?
Verizon user here. I didn't notice anything warm during setup but I noticed on my first test call that after about 10 minutes it was getting warm to the point of being uncomfortable. I've a text message restore running for about 10 minutes now with the display on and the phone is cold to the touch. Not sure what may be causing the temp variances. An unlocked CPU sounds plausible which i'm kind of okay with. Has anyone notice poor call quality. According to the person I was talking to my voice would go through periods of crystal clarity and inaudible garble. Not sure if it was on my end or theirs. I'll return with updates.
Got my My LG G5 from T-Mobile... After 3 days the phone has been overheating, and every 10 seconds it drops Mobile Connection...I went through a plethora of tests with T-Mobile Support and they determined that I need a replacement device...so waiting for the replacement...One other thing, I notice this happened after calling T-Mobile to Unlock the device...So not sure if there is any correlation between my issue and T-Mobiles Unlock App, T-Mobile said the two were not related.
I did factory reset and left for 10 minutes after first boot then setup my credentials and left phone on WiFi for 1 hour before I did start downloading

The only 2 times i had the phone get warm was whdn i setup it up and when i tried to film a 4k video while charging it and it caused the phone to stutter and even the clips stuttered.
I think there are communication problem here, when people mention hot, how hot is it, as different people defines them differently, I know my friends phone is only warm, but he just say hot.
all the LG phones i heard get HOT or overheated. this has been happing for so many years, nothing new.
i notice this 4 years ago with my LG phone. i thought they would have fixed it by now.

I had the V10 for about 4 months, only get s warm, not hot.
Setup no heat, installing all apps for 20 mins no heat. Lots of photos not heat. Not seeing an issue with over heating
I've searched and googled . I cannot find a good fix for the heat issue . I've turned off location , ran cleaning apps , reduced brightness , and others and still extremely hot on power button area while downloading or watching a video . Is there a kernel tweak for this? anybody ?
I don't have this issue on mine

I have same issue. I've had the issue for awhile. My phone gets so hot, that many times it feels like the screen is going to melt. I literally can't touch it sometimes, it is that hot. It actually hurts to touch the screen. Many times it's popped up and had to shut phone off because of heat.
This is when nothing is running. I am completely stumped.
Also lately my LTE is stupid sloe, so I force it into wcdma[4g] only and it's much faster.... How does that make any sense?
Idk I'm getting bunch of problems, that I'm absolutely sick of this phone now. My G4 ran 100x better. So did my G3 and G2.

I've reduced the heat dramatically even at a benchmark it didn't get extremely hot like it did before . Deleted bloat, downloaded the v10 tweak on this forum that tweaks the build.prop and others. Turned off gps and wifi related things. Did alot. Battery life is great with screen off but will drain on average 1% every few minutes with screen on
I have never had any heat issues. Sure it gets warm from time to time. (especially out in the blazing summer sun) but never so hot that the screen will melt.
I'm still in 100% stock. The only strange thing would be recent apps list disappears but a restart fixes that.
The only time mine overheats is when I run Facebook live..
I actually get a message about overheating. Lol.
