Galaxy S3 low memory problems (Unfortunately, system UI has stopped). - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I was having problems with my S3 recently on CM 11 mod - chrome crashing, slow-to-appear keyboard etc when I got fed up with it, did a factory reset, and installed blisspop. But the problems persisted. Now I'm constantly getting the "Unfortunately, system UI has stopped" which I consider to be a problem of the same vein - memory leak or something that has got to be related with the memory. Is there any particular app that might be the problem or I'm looking at it from the wrong angle?
Thank you.

You can try returning fully to stock then flash other ROMS and see whether this problem is still there or not.
Or try other alternatives first because this quite troublesome process

Well I agree it's a troublesome process and I don't think it solves anything since the problems were never there when I began using custom roms..

Bump.. can someone please suggest what I might do here?

Flash the same rom straight over the top. You shouldn't lose any data and it will replace all system files back to original state.

[Q] Radio Malfunction, com.android.phone error

My phones been acting strange the past two days, but today it decided to die on me.
I was using alien #1 ROM, when I got spammed with error messages. My CDMA radio quit working, giving me the com.android.phone error
I decided to install another ROM, this time Cyanogen Mod 7. Same problem.
I did a standard wipe and install, fix permissions, everything.
Either its the Kernel, or my radio's shot.
If someone has any more insight into this problem, or has fixed it, please let me know
I'm getting a new phone next monday probably, but if anyone can fix my problem before then, I'd be greatful.
Also, Stock ROM link would be awesome.
No homebase ROM, please. I'd like the full stock ROM, bloatware and all.
Different, but similar Google seaches pull up nothing. Almost got hacked as well by a malicious ad.

Having issues is it 4.0.4 or my phone?

I am having real issues with 4.0.4, When I upgraded to ICS from GB I did the usual clear caches, factory reset and all the rest, but performance was slow, the phone would restart, the phone would lock up resulting in having to remove the battery to get it going again, I've had apps close unexpectedly, launcher crashing and restart, it was a major pain in the behind. I thought OK I will install a custom ROM so I installed CM9, did the usual reset procedure etc but still performance is not great, its like the phone is struggling with memory or something, and yesterday opened the BBC news app and the entire phone locked up again resulting in having to remove the battery, so the same issues are happening on a custom rom that I had on stock.
So I am wondering is it something with 4.0.4 or is it something with my phone? Memory problems etc.

- update your apps to latest versions via playstore for best compatibility.
- don't restore app + data using titanium backup after upgrade, or flashing CM9, it will drag down the performance. You can however, restore apps only.
Swyped from my Galaxy SII
You might be onto something, I used TB to restore app & data on CM9

and that's the reason why you have sluggish performance.
If you read the warnings on CM9 thread, first post, it's categorically started there too

If you have been rooting in the past then it might be a problem for you my i9100 has ics 4.0.4 no problems flawless.Try downloading a stock rom from samfirmware.com

My Note is very unstable - can't tell if it's a lemon or something I did

This phone was an insurance replacement from ATT, so alway a bit wary of these refurbished phones.
So for the longest time it has always been a bit glitchy, hanging, and unstable. I assumed it was a software problem, and something i had done wrong when flashing...but now I am wondering if maybe my phone is a lemon. Lately it has been rebooting randomly on its own,
I wanted to try flashing back to stock, just to start from scratch, and I did with Da G's stock rom . Then i just rooted it with Da G's root, and put on CWR. Then I flashed King Kang Rom. It's been still real buggy. Maybe I need to to stock ICS or JB then flash a ROM? OR maybe it's just this phone....either way not real happy with the stability i've been dealing with.
If youve tried multiple roms and stock roms and its still buggy then its probably the phone, I have got so many replacement phones that were duds
Are you doing a wipe between all those roms or just flashing one over the other? That could be a major problem that is easily fixed.
Yes, i do full wipes/factory reset in CWM every time.
I know i have seen some guys say you must flash like 3 times, so maybe i'm not flashing it enough times or something..? i also saw someone say don't touch your phone for 15 minutes after flashing. i have no idea if these tricks actually work or what. doesn't seem to be a definitive rule book on how to flash the right way
How are you restoring your apps? TB or letting Play reinstall them?
using TB. I usually do a just apps reinstall, then data
Was the TB backup from a different version of android, i.e. GB, ICS then installed on JB?
yes, i did create it on an ICS rom. you think that could be causing me problems?
Good possibility. I had the same issue. Moved from CM9 to CM10 and restored through TB. Lots of FC and reboots. Wiped and let Play reinstall everything, now its smooth.
great thought and worth a shot if that's what could be causing a problem. so did you lose all your data then with all apps? msgs, etc? sucks to start from complete scratch. i'll even miss call log
Lost data, but was able to d/l everything else. Messages and call logs were gone. It is worth it to have a working phone with out glitches. Let me know if it works.
Well a good test is to install a known solid ics problem free ROM like Padawan or Black ice? (exact name escapes me). If it works for u then over clock it to 1836 with setcpu and u will have a ROM VERY close to the JB rom smoothness but actually works.
If u still have problems then u may very well have a flaky phone.
(Oh yeah don't get to worried about stuff like wipe 3 times etc...old wifes tales. I haven't done that for over a year on 3 android phones. ). Also it is Safe to restore apps AND data with titaniumb (just not system data).

+1 on the old wives tale. Seems more like a placebo effect. I only wipe once, and I've flashed roms on tons of phones.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
tried installing padawan...so far so good, have not overclocked yet....will report back
Some roms will format your system partition prior to flashing the rom while others do not.
Beyond the wipe of data, cache, dalvik and such, it is wise to go into " mounts and storage" and format the system partition while in CWM recovery.
This ensures that nothing remains on the device before the new rom image is pushed to the system partition.
I agree that wiping 3 times is a bit over the top, but wiping the entire image base before flashing a new one is almost always mandatory.....g
For future reference, you can back up call and sms logs and restore them without causing lags or fc. The logs are simple .xml files.

Random freezing

So I have had some weird issues. I was running on Slimbean when this started. Out of nowhere my device started freezing from time to times, like if I was writing a text message or something. Everything would just stop and then I had to reboot the system to get it functional again. This started to get annoying so I did a clean reinstall of Slimbean, formatted system and cache etc. That didn't help so I decided to change the rom. I installed another AOSP rom, Carbonrom but that did't help (of course I did a clean install). After that I decided to try if changing the rom to Sammy based would help. I was wrong.
At this point I taught that something with my hardware would be broken. So I installed triangleaway, formatted system and then installed samsung's official firmware with odin. Then I did a factory reset from system settings. My plans were to send the phone to warranty but strangely after running the stock rom for about a week, the freezing problems were gone, when earlier it was a daily thing.
So now I'm wondering what could have it been and why? If I reroot and install a custom rom now, will the freezing start again?
Hi there,
There's a big thread on this, with a solution(I can confirm that it worked for me):

Help on Android 4.3

Hello all, I am having some issues with 4.3 roms that I hope someone is able to help with.
I first noticed the problems after flashing PA 4.3, and after doing the usual restoration of my apps, I found that some of them now stutter very badly, the key apps that come to mind are Feedly, Dolphin browser, Opera, and the stock browser.
I searched the thread for users suffering from the same problems, but none seemed to have it. Therefore I took it as my own fault and tried to reflash the rom again. When flashing a rom, I always do the following: Full wipe, with system, preload, data all formatted. This I do via Philz recovery.
I then restored all my apps as usual via titanium backup, and still found the problem to exist. I took it as perhaps bad luck of mine, that my phone just would not play nice with PA 4.3. I then tried other 4.3 roms, PACman and liquidsmooth, but again the problems occurred.
This time, I eliminated my backups as a possible culprit by only downloading the affected apps via playstore immediately after a fresh install (after the entire wifi, google setup) and nothing else. However, these apps are still affected by the stuttering problem.
Flashing to 4.2.2 roms do not present this issue at all.
Therefore i searched for possible incompatibilities of the apps with 4.3, but was not able to find anything. Seeing as no other users of the roms are having the same problems as me, I can only concur that it may be something I am doing wrong, so I am hoping if anyone can help shed some light on this situation I am in, thank you.
Summary:
- Several apps stuttering on 4.3
- Full wipe fresh install with no other apps installed does not fix problem
- Issue is not present on 4.2.2
- Multiple 4.3 roms tested
Info:
Liquidsmooth JB - v2.9
Googy Max kernel 1.7.5
Philz recovery 5.11.2
If more info is required, I would be happy to provide.

I did not notice my notifications drawer stutter, however i mostly run in expanded desktop mode with PIE and halo so i do not use the notifications much. I was always on googy kernel for my roms, and tried using the phone, but gave up after 1 day because the experience was terrible with stutters and all. I also tried a cache wipe and dalvik wipe but to no avail.

the above is strange indeed. I am running SlimBean 4.3 since the first beta and never experienced stutters (also with TB restores).
You could try to setup your phone from scratch with MegaWipe (it will wipe anything clean, only leaves your external SD intact), whereas I would be surprised if this will help. Otherwise did you try another kernel (e.g. Yank's)?

Aye, hoping to exhaust every possible means before such a drastic "nuke" is attempted. I used yank before googy, but to eliminate all possible causes, i have only installed the apps that are affected on a clean fresh rom with no modifications or other apps installed. Since its impossible for 3 clean roms to be having the problem, its either me or my phone.
Oh and on an extra note, my phone has died from SDS twice, both times i have sent it back for repair. After the second time, i believe they updated my bootloader iirc, so it now has the red "!" sign after a software flash. Using the emmc checker app, it is also no longer the sds affected version.

I guess you are correct considering that:
(1) your procedure of flashing a rom is following the guides
(2) you tried different ROMs
(3) you tried different kernels
knowing that you had SDS problems, maybe it was not resolved 100%? I had, for quite some time, also occasional freezes and lags and the procedure here helped me to solve them, maybe also worth a try?

Thank you, I will try that out later. I AM having some bootloop issues but that is on 4.2.2, no freezes though, but the DFG seems like it wouldnt hurt to try.

Well I tested the DFG out, now back on 4.3 but issues still present sadly. One thing i did notice about my browsers though, is that it only starts to stutter when running 2 or more tabs. On one tab alone, it is smooth. Most of the other apps are also functioning smoothly. I guess I will stick with the setup for now and use replacement apps for the affected ones.
