If you're on the MDK bootloader, you can update to the stock/rooted/deodexed OC1 ROM in the development forum.

As the title says, is it too late for me to root my SCHI545 if I'm updated to 4.4.2? I can see there is a way to root the GS4 with towelroot but wasn't sure if that has been patched out yet by Verizon at this point in time.

Towelroot works fine on 4.4.2, I've tried it and it worked

There is no way to downgrade once you've gone to OC1 via Odin or OTA.

Depends, if you odin'd the I545VRUGOC1_Neutered_Full_Odin then yes you can go back to kitkat. If you're baseband is OC1 then you're out of luck.

Well, MDK is the only one that could install a custom recovery.

There is a bootloader exploit that allows that.

The only Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 (SCH-I545), aka jfltevzw, that has an unlockable bootloader is the one that has the baseband version "I545VRUAMDK".

Did you accept the 4.4.2 OTA update from Verizon? If so, your bootloader is locked out and I don't believe there's much you can do besides running the stock ROM.
