Hi Guys & Gals
Happy Memorial Day. I am trying to get a zImage file I have on my phone, but it has not completely worked for me. My problem is I am not sure if the issue is with the zImage or what I do to it to get it on my phone. Basically I used mkboot script to unpack a stock rom; then I replace the zImage which came with the stockrom. I hear Clockwordmod recovery flashes zImages, so I am trying to flash my device with CWM and give this a try. But I am not having much success. Now I do not know if I am doing something wrong or the file is incompatible with my Android version, which is Kitkat. Can you tell me a sure way to flash my zImage or point me to a version of CWM which worked for you? Here is my phone's specs:
Software N900PVPUCNC5
Hardware: N900P.12
Android version 4.4.2
Kernel 3.4.0-951 486

I believe zimage is your kernel but its probably in a different file format that can't flash in recovery so you may have to use odin to flash it. Moblie odin might work too. http://youtu.be/R7u-iUo5C6MR7u-iUo5C6M Check out this link to better understand what part are called what and where they go. Hope this helped.

Hello everybody,
I got problem with reverting my SGS2 to stock ROM.
Recently I bought used SGS2 with this ROM flashed:
http://www.dialandroid.com/2011/09/install-android-235-i9100xxki3-on.html
I want to put VIPNet ROM from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928
When I flashed VIPNet ROM with Odin everything went OK in Odin but phone is stuck on screen with SGS2 logo (static one, not animated) and after some time lot of text scrolls on screen that basicly says "E:failed to mount" and "E:can't mount".
I guess that problem is that original owner flashed ROM with PIT file and repartition option so now when I flash original ROM it can't mount partition.
My question is how to repartition partition for stock ROM and what PIT file should I use?
Sorry for my English.
Thank you.
Don't use a PIT file.
Most FAQ that relate to stock roms or rooting, will make it pretty clear you don't touch PIT section on theses phones unless you want to pretty much brick your device. So please just read!
I found the best way to return to stock for me was
Flash cf-root via download mode
Format system/data/cache/dalvik mounts
Flash stock rom using odin + download mode
Take .pit file from samfirmware ,.but be careful. Only use 3parts firmware NEVER firmware with only one part. The means for newest stock firmware use XXKI3 with.pit file and then flash XWKJ3.
I have also problem with reverting to stock rom. I have check rom and i want to put back to VIPnet stock but when i start flashing over odin it stuck on installing factoryfs.img. What should I do to?
Do a complete wipe of your phone before flashing.First root with cf-root.Then boot to recovery and wipe cache patition, dalvik cache, format system, format data, format battery and factory reset.Boot your phone. It will not go past boot logo so after 1min pull battery put it back in and boot into download mode and flash via Odin.
now it stucks on cache.img, please help I'm going crazy.
Use Fus Downloader 2.1 and download the latest stock ROM.
You do not need a PIT file, since it has a built in Sbl.bin file.
It automatically does a repartition when used with ODIN.
Before flashing, remove battery from phone.
Thank you everybody.
I used LiFE1688 solution and everything went fine, so big thanks to you.
There is one more thing I am not sure about, information in about phone is like this:
- Android version: 2.3.5
- Baseband version: I9100BUKI1
- Kernal version: 2.6.35.7-I9100BUKJ3-CL647431 [email protected] #2
- Build number: GINGERBREAD.BUKJ3
Is that realy stock kernal version?
Is my phone still rooted? How to check?
I have to take it to service so it can not be rooted.
Thanks

Thats fine. Some stock kernels come like that.It doesnt mean that you are still rooted. You just now need to make sure you have a clean binary counter so they cant see you have been flashing.
Thank you
What a stupid name for stock kernal
that's interesting, I found tutorial on another forum, where .PIT file use was marked as necessary, I flashed 3-files stock then 1 file with .PIT provided by that forum and everything went smoothly, phone is working
so I did something wrong, it's so confusing for a newbie, what problems can I have in the future after flashing with .PIT file?
Odin doesn't work
Odin detects my phone but not able to write anything. It just gets stuck.
I have a retail galaxy tab 10.1 16gb and was wondering how do I flash the newest clockwork recovery touch .img? From what I understand we don't have access to fastboot and doing the method on terminal emulator doesn't work either. Is their another option to do it without having to go to rom manager and purchasing the touch recovery
You could tar it and flash the new tar with Odin. Also, you can find cwm in pershoot's blog and flash it with Odin, sans the "tar it" part.
http://droidbasement.com/db-blog/?p=2487
Well koush finally released a new version so trying to get the touch version of it installed.
I'm using a CM9 ROM, it has ROM Manager included and I can flash cwm touch without problem and free of charge (cwm touch works well).
Anyway, I made a .tar.md5 from the recovery.img of cwm touch and tried to flash it via Odin, but Odin crashes when is doing the analysis of the file. If you want I can upload it, maybe it works for you (the error is non descriptive, so I don't know what's wrong).
I think you might have to rename the touch img to recovery.img but thats what was my next plan of action. I have Rom Manager premium and yet I don't find any way to select the img itself besides selecting I want to pay for it.

Do you mean for the .tar.md5 for Odin? Because i did.
Edit: Damn! I don't know what I did wrong, maybe the download was bad =/ but I tried again and now works fine for me. You can flash this with Odin: recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.3.1-p4wifi
Thank you for that link to the odin recovery!
i was flashing steves kernel and something went wrong and went into a boot loop after i backed up my rom. i tried to install the Galaxy Player USA 4.0 .pit file and the stock rom, but when i did i got a screen that said:

Did you wipe your data?
yes. i think something got messed up with the .pit file because i did not get the error screen until i flashed the .pit
By flashing the pit you wiped out every partition on your device except efs. Why did you flash one? You NEVER need a pit unless reverting from mtd or if you screwed up your partitions.

i did this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1389873
is it able to be fixed? can you give me a .pit file that will work, please?
Follow the instructions in this thread.

The US 4.0 stock rom should be posted there in the next few days. I used the instructions to recover my US 4.0 but I had to use a custom ROM that is buggy. I'm just waiting on the stock ROM.
what rom did you use? did you use odin or heimdall?
Wait for a stock US 4.0 ROM to be released.
I used heimdall and loaded the Klassic ROM. But for the partitions PARAM, CACHE and DBDATA I used the files in the international stock ROM from from zaclimon. I would not recommend mixing them like that. I just did it to practice for when we get a stock ROM for the US 4.0. Currently Android boots but the home button does not work (US version has a touch button instead of a physical button for home) and the settings process crashes on startup.
I'm using a Galaxy Tab 10.1 P7510 and I need to install a custom kernel zImage that I have built from Galaxy's kernel source code. I'm doing this for research purposes, I don't need to do fancy stuff with this. I just need to test my kernel changes. I tried any way I found in the forums to install it, but I couldn't.
I used a custom rom called CLEAN 1.4 and installed it. Then I modified its boot.img to replace the zImage with the one I have. After that I flashed boot.img using PDA in odin. The tab booted with a ! sign at the first screen and then the screen went scrambled but when connected to PC using USB, the PC recognized it. So, I went to recovery and used the CLEAN 1.4 to recover again.
I'm going crazy with this. I just need to install this zImage and that's it. Could anyone on earth help me with this?!
OK. I got it working. Now I can put my zImage in a template kernel zip file and successfully install it in recovery mode. However, I see that the kernel version in Settings -> About device -> Kernel version, does not change. Is that normal? Any thoughts?

In shell type:
uname -a.
That should provide you with kernel version with a timestamp. Confirm with when you have build the kernel.

Hi @It_ler / All,
Ok, so recently I picked up a phone to upgrade for my friend. It came with stock firmware, Android 4.0.3. My mate wanted me to flash a safe recovery and upgrade to KitKat, which I have done.
Looking around the phone, on it's internal flash storage, I notice folders for ClockWorkMod and what appears to be a stock rom file. Clockworkmod didn't appear to be on the original setup, and only the recovery is now.
However, I am wondering if it is safe for my mate to flash this file to return to stock should he so wish too.
Phone: Galaxy S2 i9100 (based on BVLPD kernel)
Rom File: i9100xwlss_i9100oxxls9_i9100xxms2_home.tar
As it's a TAR file, I assume I have to flash this with Odin? I have Mobile Odin Pro 4.00, can this rom be flashed within that, and is it safe based on my kernel? Will this produce the Yellow Triangle if I do it in Mobile Odin?
Thanks, Lister

Which KK ROM do you want to flash?
Maybe you will find detailed installation instructions in the ROM's thread
Hi @bhavstech / @It_ler,
Thanks for replying to my post/question... However unfortunately you've misunderstood what I meant... (most likely my fault in the way that I have described it...)
Flashing a KitKat rom is not a problem, I can do that part just fine....
My question is...
Is this file i9100xwlss_i9100oxxls9_i9100xxms2_home.tar that I have found already on the internal storage of the 2nd hand phone safe to flash on my phone (even though its based on BVLPD model), and as it's a TAR file format, do I just flash it with Mobile Odin.
----
He shouldnt ever need to go back to stock, but should he want too... Would that file be ok to return to stock??
Thanks, Lister

The filename looks OK. It seems to be the XWLSS stock ROM for the international SGS2 (GT-I9100).
But I can't garantee that the tar file really contains what the filename promises.
I recommend to download latest stock ROM (XWMS2 or XWMS3) from a reliable source (e.g. from SamMobile.com).
And put this on your phone ... just in case you will have to go back to stock.
