[Q] RAM usage (memory leak/background RAM clearing) - E 2015 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Planning on buying the 4G model, but I'm a bit worried because it's got only 1GB RAM.
Is it enough? How much RAM is free on boot? Will it slow down/ clear apps if I use FB messenger, reddit, soundcloud and chrome? Not looking at running 5+ apps in the background, so will it do?

For me it is enougth, the only apps with usually the phone closes itself are games, everyone else didnt

Do you multitask? How's the performance with 3-4 apps open?

I'm not a big multitasker, but I do cycle through apps a lot. Like I'll browse Facebook, then G+, then Twitter, then some websites, then maybe play a game or two. Even with heavy apps like Facebook and Clash of Clans recently open when I check the RAM I usually have around 34% free, and the phone is not sluggish. The only thing I do a lot is after I'm done with what I did I clear all apps from the recent apps menu. I don't like how 5.x stores so many snapshots of all the things I did. I like the old 4.x way where it only showed what apps you used, and not the exact place. I think if the phone slows down it's because of too many snapshots in the recent apps since it's holding all those in memory. Clear those, and the phone should get snappy again.

With the sotck rom i usually do because it doesnt have the clear all button like CM and it is very responsive and works fine, the unique apps who are disposed of the ram are games basically, firefox for example doesnt and it is a heavy app
I am happy, it is enough fast for me and i played so far everything i want

I am not happy. Usually my phone always have 200MB free ram but it closes simple applications as music players.
I was discussing that in this topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e-2015/help/bug-music-players-suddenly-close-t3114383

[Q] ram question

I understand that apps reserve a certain amount of ram so they can open faster. Everywhere I look it says this is a good thing. If my phone starts to lag, I check active apps. Usually slim to none. Then I clear ram, and 30 Apps close. All of a sudden, phone lightning fast. Then apps reload and phone boggs down again. Since there are no active apps I. Assuming a task killer won't help. I know the more apps I DL the worse my problem will be but I figure the point of having a smartphone is to have toys to play with on it. How can I get my phone to always run just as fast as it does right after I clear the ram? Running blackstar X if it matters.

RAM does not take speed, CPU time does. If the apps are sitting in ram, and they are not running then those apps are not taking up any speed. (at least none that you should be able to perceive)
Check other things, remember everything resets when you reboot, so maybe a widget, or the os is running sloppy and causing your slow downs, live wallpaper takes processor cycles also.
Only widget is clockr. No live wallpapers. The time I most notice is bringing up webpages. Go to task manager, ram tab, clear memory and bam no more waiting on a webpage to load. I know I'm not just making it up but everything I research tells me I am.

Why do apps I don't have open consuming 20MB of ram each, and significant CPU time?

Hello!
I installed ES task manager today on my new Nexus 7 and I was shocked to see that several apps are consuming 20mb+ of RAM when I don't even have them open, such as Titanium Backup, Facebook Messenger, PIE Controls, Auto Hide Softkeys. Even apps like YouTube, Gallery, Chrome, Currents and Hangouts seem to be running and using RAM and I have never opened any of these applications before. The actual app switcher shows that I have no apps open, yet ES Task Manager reports that 25% of my CPU is being used. All in all, an almost fresh install of Android idling is consuming 1GB of ram and 1/4th of my CPU time.
I have Googled this issue and discovered that many people are annoyed at developers who have background services, and sometimes even refuse to use an app that has such background services, but I haven't been able to discover why these background services use so much RAM (or even why titanium needs a background service), and I would really like to be able to just kill Chrome, Youtube, Currents etc because I never use these, but of course when I kill them in ES Task Manager they re-open within several minutes.
Can anybody shed some light on what's going on here? From what I can gather after searching around the forums, some people advocate the use of task killers, and some people also say killing all these services and apps just makes battery life even worse.
Edit: google+ is using 20mb of ram and I never even use it-- why!
If you are rooted you can use apps like Greenify to pause them temporarily until you run them. You can also use apps like Clean Master that will kill all task on every screen off. Ultimately you can remove these apps that are taking up a lot of ram as the best solution.

Wow, didn't know something like greenify existed, thank you!

[Q] ram managment

hi everyone
i've been using the d620r version for half a year now and there is a problem i see with the ram managment. the phone just can't keep a few tasks running at once. when i listen to music, or chat with chatheads (fb messenger) and open another app, for example maps, browser, or any game, the system simply closes the music and messenger apps running in the background. and i don't even want to mention the homescreen which reloads everytime i open the simplest app...
i am rooted, and this is what i've tried to do to solve my problems:
deleted lg the bloatware (like lg sync etc)
deleted google bloatware (google search, play games, play music, etc)
played around with auto memory manager (setting really low values so apps would not get killed)
tried to force ongoing notifications using the xposed module app settings
tweaked around with gl tools, to decrease graphics so apps would be lighter
decreased screen resolution using resolution changer pro (this helped but it made the phone and message apps to forceclose)
i even flashed another rom, the crystal PA 8 available here on xda.. this actually helped, there was much less closing, BUT the rom is too unstable and buggy for everyday use...
is there anything else i could do?
thanks a lot
I don't know about any other users but root takes something from performance, at least here (D618). What I suggest is: flash back stock, full wipe (KDZ), root but don't heavily use apps that require root, don't use a lot of xposed modules and etc. Hope it helps.

make swap in cache partition because its so dumb to have that much free memory
and thats why apps are being killed
thanks for your opinion. actually, this problem occured even before i rooted the phone. right now, i'm back to stock. i hoped that maybe i could expand my ram using rohesoft swap expander but our kernel is not supported and i couldn't find any custom ones...

kernel doesn't support swap
oooh i was sooo wrong... the cache swap file works perfectly, the phone is much much smoother now
if anyone is experiencing the same issue, just download ram expander, choose the swap file location to cache and enjoy

Xperia Ray with Super Jelly Bean 8.0 + Fusion Kernel - experiences

This ROM/Kernel combo is a great one, I must say. I want to share my experiences running it, and maybe somebody has more tips on how to improve even further. Feel free to ask questions as well.
-- some basic info --
The phone is rooted, obviously.
I have a fast 32 GB card and Mounts2SD app, so storage of apps is not an issue in any way.
I use Nova Launcher, Xperia Keyboard (with gestures and two languages), MyAndroidTools for managing apps and services, and Greenify to hibernate some stuff.
I limit background processes to 4 under developer options. Sometimes I kill apps with a long-press of the back button to make room in RAM for the next activity.
-- what to disable --
I'm pretty into Gmail Inbox, but in the end it was too slow to run on the phone. And besides a stupid parking app Inbox was the only app that needed Play Services, so in the end it had to go. You see, Play Services is the main thing that will choke the phone on random occasions. It's got 325 services(!) and counting, so no wonder that it runs amok every now and then. Just cut them away by disabling them in MyAndroidTools.
Play Store is also something that is not a very nice background thing on a low-end phone, so I disable that, too. It's relatively easy to enable temporarily if/when I need to install something.
I have location services disabled. Navigation is therefore a no-go which is kind of a bummer - Google Maps is also Play Services based and won't run on 400 MB RAM anyway, so don't bother. Maybe there are other navigation alternatives around for low-end phones, IDK?
** A note: Play Services and Play Store irritate me as they turn on themselves spontaneously every now and then. Every few days the phone will turn to quicksand and when I diagnose there's always Play Services running again, even though it's disabled in MyAndroidTools. I would really like to have those two be well-behaving citizens **
-- apps --
Shuttle is a nice music player for this phone, I have about 25 GB of music on the card and it manages well.
Mailbox by Dropbox is lean and fast and a fine alternative if it wasn't for the fact that I'm not able to type in more than one word when replying to a mail - bit of limiting for a mail app wouldn't you say?
Twitter, Trello, Slack, Dropbox run fine although I won't run widgets due to RAM limitations.
Business Calendar is my longtime favorite and it works well. I tried upgrading to BC2 but that's not for this phone as far as I could judge (and with no new need-to-have features).
Opera Mini works for me, seems to be pretty conservative on RAM if a limited number of tabs are kept open. Of course, not everything renders optimally, but on the other hand the data savings are great so you can even surf decently on Edge connections, which come in handy sometimes.
The SJB camera works great, as does the FM Radio - and no problems ever with Wifi which I had with the phone on other ROMs previously!
No games. Not my thing. Not on a 3.5" display anyhow.
-- final words --
With the setup described here, this phone is still very much usable. Sure it's not the fastest but hey Zen right? And you won't be able to run any app comfortably, but the abovementioned make my workday more than manageable. Kudos to the ROM and Kernel developers, and to SonyEricsson for a still-great phone in a really pocketable package!

Apps keep closing on galaxy S3

Hello, I have a really frustrating problem with my galaxy S3.
All apps are closing when I am using them.
It started with Google Chrome that was closing after browsing the web for a few minutes but more and more apps keep closing.
I installed many different web browsers but they all do the same, they freeze and close.
Games and other demanding apps are also doing this, for example: Real Racing 3.
I am running Android 5.1.1 Cyanogenmod and I already tried multiple roms that all had this problem. (All clean installs and I did a factory reset before and after the flashing)
I was thinking of a ram issue (the s3 only got 1gb) I checked the ram usage and there is always about 200mb free ram.
Using Greenify didn't make the apps crash less but it did give me a battery boost.
I don't know anything about the kernel ram settings and I don't know if this can solve the issue.
Is there someone with the same problem or does someone know how to solve this?
Thank you in advance.
edit: i also tried freezing all user apps that are active in the background
I found a sort of solution to my problem, I downloaded the app: Lspeed and I did set the ram preset on "game mode".
Background apps close so I won't get any notifications but I can play games or use heavy apps.
It is not the best solution but I will have to deal with it due to the 1gb ram.
