[Q] Acton Needed - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

I have been away from the boards for a while but I am back because I have a problem I need help with.
My rooted Note 3 tried to update itself and I lost root, but it is also not unrooted. The update failed and only managed to annoy my phone.
BUT....
I got a text message today saying, "Action Needed. Perform a software update to prevent service interruption.
My work phone has company paid for Hot spot so I don't really need to have my personal phone rooted any longer.
Is there a way to reset my phone so Sprint thinks it was never rooted and the update goes through OR should I update with the latest mods and a new ROM?
Currently running:
4.4.2
N900PVPUNCNC5
w/kernel: 3.4.0 - 951486
any help would be... well.. .um... helpful
Thanks

I got the same text today. When i try to download the software update, it says that my phone has been modified and to try going to samsung kies on a pc to download the update.

Got the same text this morning, but I still need root. Does anyone know what the update is actually for, so we can work around it?

You could try to restore it to stock and try the ota update again. I know in recent years Samsung has implemented the KNOX warranty bit (switch) that gets tripped by certain root methods, flashing kernels, recoveries and is basically un-revertible.
Try out this guide below and let me know how it goes. I don't own a note 3 but thought I might try and help.

You guys can download the OC5 (Lollipop) tar from this thread and flash it using ODIN. **Fair warning: this will get rid of your root access and also any custom recovery you installed** If you want to regain root, you can follow the same procedure but with CF-Autoroot instead of the OC5 .tar file.
1) Download the OC5 .tar.zip file and ODIN
2) Unzip
3) Go to the ODIN folder and right click, select "run as administrator"
4) Click on the PDA button and select the OC5 .tar file you just extracted
5) Completely power down your phone (I pull the battery for a few seconds)
6) Enter Download mode by pressing and holding Volume Down + Menu + Power button, then Volume Up to continue
7) Plug in your phone and click start
8) Your phone will reboot and be upgraded to OC5 Lollipop

I am at work, I will try this this weekend.
Thank You!

I also received this message this AM, and am very curious...
Is Sprint basically forcing all Note 3 users to update to Lollipop?
Anybody have any additional info, by any chance? Even a suggestion of why this is or could be necessary...
I'm happy with my KitKat, especially since Xposed will cease working if I update...
Thanks!

Thanks for info. I figured i may have to lose root. However, im already on oc5 and still recieved the text. I originally flashed the nab and let the ota update happen. So i was stock unrooted oc5. Then i rooted by installing twrp with odin and then flashed that updatesu.zip in twrp. So why would i be getting an update notification? Is there a way that sprint knows my phone is rooted? Why would i lose service?

No, they wouldn't be sending that knowing your phone is rooted. Mine has been rooted with Knox tripped since the second day I owned it and I haven't gotten that message. Maybe it is their way of trying to get people on to the latest modem. They are are probably saying that they think you will have better service on the OC5 modem? As long as you made it to OC5, I wouldn't worry.

They just want you on 0C5. They dont care if you're on kitkat or lollipop

Got this message today as well.

I was also a recipient of this unwelcomed text. I've been on a MJ4 ROM for a long time and had no intention of upgrading, especially until Xposed framework works with Lollipop.

For those who took the update, anything good from it?

It's not all bad, definitely different then other android version but overall I think it runs rather smooth

Just odin oc5 modem not the bootloader. I wanna stay on kitkat a bit longer.

Here is the thread with the baseband/modem that you can ODIN to keep KitKat. There are instructions in the first post but don't be afraid to ask if you have any questions.

Would this work for MJ4 or would I need to upgrade to KitKat?

Just to clarify, ONLY push the modem through Odin in those instructions. I wasn't the only one stupid enough to try and push an OC5 bootloader on 4.4.4
Got it figured out with some help, but what a waste of time.

ICS update on S2 without network

Hi Guys,
I recently updated my GS2 to ICS via Odin as my network( Vodafone Ireland) had not released it yet. Now I have a constant notification to register for software updates. Anytime ive tried doing so it fails. I had ignored it think that it will fix itself once my network releases the upgrade.
However, ive just found out that Vodafone Ireland launched ICS a few days ago. Any idea what steps i need to take?

Instructions For Flashing ICS:
Extract the firmware
Open the included Odin
Put your device in Recovery MODE (Home + Volume up + Power)
Wipe Data/Factory reset
Wipe Cache
Take Out Your battery & put it back in
Put your device into Download MODE (Home + Volume Down + Power)
Click PDA and select *.tar.md5
Then finally click START!
Maybe i wasnt clear. Ive already installed the update, i am currently running ICS but i dont seem to be able to register my update?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436854
Follow his instructions to the letter
ok there are 2 things going on........
1: either you mean the icons that show up after you flash ics stock rom
2: or you want to update officially by your carrier / OTA update.
if its option 1 just click the samsung thing and than skip it will go away, other icon you have to signin and it will check for ota update and say u have latest blaa blaa.
needless to say u need tobe online for both
Hi,
Again I'm not sure if people understand so I'm obviously not being clear. I have an unrooted SGS2 which I updated to ICS before my carrier launched it offically. I now have a constant notification to register my device update but whenever I try, I get the error "Software Update. Processing failed".
I have attached a scrnshot of the notification.
Any help is appreciated.

That's for OTA software updates. Now that you've already flashed via Odin (and probably not a firmware that matches your actual CSC) this probably won't work anymore, which is why it fails to process.
You can safely ignore it, or if you want to get rid of it, you can root and freeze the Software Update application with Titanium Backup. (there are probably other ways to get rid of it as well)

Use CheckFUS to figure out what the actual firmware is for your region, download that, and flash via Odin.

I'm not worried about the bootloader as all I need the 4.3 for is gear support...do you load the zip in the bootloader spot, the pda spot, or phone spot in odin?

Just to warn you. If this locks your bootloader, its probably locked forever a la the S4 and N3. If you previously used a custom recovery, you will no longer have this option, likely ever again with this phone. In addition, getting Hashcode to develop SS for this phone is unlikely in my opinion because we've been unlocked for so long and the phone is over a year old. Many times users take root and unlocked bootloaders for granted, thinking that if they take the OTA, someone will figure out how to reunlock or reroot the phone, the former is HIGHLY unlikely. If you can wait a day, someone will likely post an unmodified flashable zip of the newest OTA that won't jeopardize your unlocked bootloader. If you truly don't care about losing this option for good, then by all means go ahead and odin the OTA, the PDA slot should do it.
So this is what I am pondering. I'm running cleanrom which is no longer supported; should I stick with 4.2 forever or take the 4.3 build from verizon ?

There are more than just those two options. You can stay on clean ROM til a rooted, stable OTA flashable is posted. Beans is working on that now I believe. That way you'll have the same experience that the OTA gives, but you'll retain the option to root or even flash a different ROM should you desire. Beans will also be updating his custom ROM build to my knowledge based on this new OTA.
How do I track this? I mean is there a thread that Bean post to that will indicate wehn this is ready ?

If you can get to download mode it's not bricked. Try doing a factory reset in stock recovery or figure out why your drivers aren't recognizing the device.

[Q] Unable to access recovery mode and wifi

Hi all, I recently rooted my Verizon galaxy s4 i545vrufng6 4.4.2 and ever since I did I have had some issues. The way I did it was by flashing the ng5 kernel and using towelroot then reflashing ng6. After I did that my wifi was stuck on the dull green light but I read on a forum on how to fix that by going into the system and deleting one of the wifi files. After I did that everything worked fine for a few days! Then I went out of state and when I got on the airplane my phone was put on airplane mode, by the time I landed and took off airplane mode wifi wouldn't work at all. I tried to do the same thing I did earlier but it didn't work. Matter of fact, i cannot even find that file anymore Wifi will no longer even go dull green, i can hit it as many times as I want and it will stay in the off position. I thought if I flashed a custom rom it would restart the wifi, so I looked up how to install cyanogenmod and followed the YouTube vid from wwjoshdew (30minute). I didn't get through the whole thing because when my phone restarted it had an unlocked padlock at the bottom of the Samsung start up logo and when it went into recovery mode it came up with a yellow triangle saying that system software is not authorized by Verizon wireless. I can boot it up normally or I can go into download mode but I can't access recovery mode meaning I cannot do a factory reset. I took it to Verizon and they said they couldn't help me cuz I void the warranty. If anyone could please help me get my phone back to normal I would appreciate it so much! Thank you!

Sooooo.... you soft bricked your phone by flashing an unsupported ROM on your particular firmware. Cynanogenmod or ANY OTHER pure AOSP Rom is not compatible with firmwares later than MDK. Don't do that again.
You need to flash one of these http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735172 in Odin. Instructions are in the thread. You are going to be downgrading back to NC5 (the firmware version before NG6). This may fix your wifi issues as well.

Towelroot.com will work for you as far as root goes as long as you stay on NC5 firmware. Just download the APK, install it and go into the app to "make it rain"...profit.

[Q] Could someone help point me in the right direction restoring my NC5 S4?

I'm sure this has been asked before but I have no idea how to find the right thread, I've been searching but I'm not sure which method to use. I used towel root to root my S4 with NC5 build running 4.4.2 a while back and lately my phone has been randomly powering off. It shuts down instantly as if holding down the power button for 10 seconds. I'm not sure if this matters but I have xposed installed and before I found out about the locked bootloader I tried to install TWRP and CWP, so when I boot up it says custom. I want to factory reset the phone to hopefully solve this powering off problem, and I wanna be able to root again so I can put xposed back on. I have a laptop to use odin on if I need to. If someone could help me out it would be very much appreciated.

You want stock yes? Should just download Odin and the NC5 image. Place the NC5 in PDA if I remember correctly, been a while but should be. Once it is flashed you can then re root and do what not And yes I would do full wipe.

Yes I want stock NC5 so I can use towel root again. Sorry if these are stupid questions, this is my only experience with anything like this and I'm having trouble understanding.
So I should download Odin amd the full wipe NC5 image, unzip the image and place it in AP correct? But in the video he talks about drivers, do I need these and if so where do I get them? And in the thread under the directions for the full wipe step 3 says to extract the PIT file from your phone, do I need to do that?

We all start from somewhere :highfive: Yes, follow the instructions to the letter. Follow step 3 and you are golden. First Check to see if you already have drivers installed. Open Odin with your phone in download mode and plug it in. If Odin finds it then you already have the drivers if not windows may install them for you, if you are on 7 and up I know for sure. Had to use Odin a lot before with my old S4.
Well I finally figured it out. Nearly had a heart attack when I pushed the run button lol. Thank you guys so much for the help!

I did the full wipe via Odin to restore to NC5 and the only hiccup I'm having is that WiFi will not connect. I've done multiple reboots, too, just FYI.
Any suggestions, please?

i managed to get the OF6 sprint full rom file through kies.
this is only to be flashed using odin in the ap slot.
you will probably lose root and your custom recovery.
you may be able to root it and restore the data . That up to you to try.
This is the Sprint version Only!
here is the link: if someone wants to provide a mirror that would be appreciated.
Disabling 'Reactivation Lock' from 'Security' in the settings allowed me to root and add a custom recovery (TWRP).
your on your own from here!

here is another link thats a zipped MD5.tar file. this must be unzipped before putting the file into odin ap slot . (thanks to itskapil for the link)

It's always great to have a TAR file on PC. Thanks!
But btw, this is Android 5.0 update, right? Have read on android blogs that OF6 has been 5.1 update for T-Mobile Galaxy S6 sets. So..
Okay, it's 5.0.2. Brings Reactivation lock.

First is this a necessary update? Second does one have to update to OD3 first before doing the update. I'm still on OA6

no you dont have to update and no it isnt necessary. but if you are on stock OA6 I would take to guess that this rom is 5 months newer with improvements in alot of areas. they claim its for factory reset protection (so someone cant steal your phone and just factory reset it and it theirs now) and for reactivation protection (same thing so noone can reactivate the phone and make it theirs)
if i was on straight stock i would update. if i was on a stock rooted i would either try and root it or wait for someone to root the tar file and make it flashable through recovery.
thats my take on it.
cool... thanks. I like the security features, but at the same time I may wait till the new Moar comes out to do the work.
Is there a new radio and modem version with this update?

Has anyone successfully loaded a custom recovery and possibly one of the available OA6 ROMs after updating to this full tar?
I know there are separate modem and firmware files, but I was just curious if anyone has tried to go there from full stock.

Yes. In fact, I did a full rom install, with nand erase all (after a bad flash), and I still went back to OA6 and OD3 stock deodexed roms.
Flashing TWRP from Odin works fine after flashing OF6 or OD3. I also used the CF one click root method, and that also worked for me.
Everything I did was in Odin 3.10.6.
Chainfires auto root makes odin complains about the recovery and shows 'fuse>3', which (I assume) means I've already burnt thru three of the 400+ fuses in the phone (kernel, recovery and probably rooting). I've tried odin 3.10.6 and the version that comes with chainfires auto root. Towelroot v3 says my phone isn't supported, even when using the command mod options.
I'll boot back into Windowz and try this a few more times. I don't see/know how joshdv rooted his phone...
edit: let's add insult to injury. I can't downgrade the firmware/OS to OA6, says it fails OS version.

@joshdv
Maybe it would help if you posted the link to the autoroot tar and any special steps you took to get it working.

Ya, before I flashed this, I knew I was probably stuck with OF6 and that there currently wasn't a reliable method to get root. Now, it's a waiting game to see if someone comes up with a method/hack to root this. GooooOOOOO CHAINFIRE!!!

Depends how long you're willing to wait and if you want to keep the warranty bit untripped.
If it doesn't matter, you can still flash custom recovery in odin and any one of the pre-rooted custom or stock roms that will run on the lollipop bootloader.
I got root by just installing custom recovery and flashing super su. zip
