Hi guys,
I was wondering if anybody could recommend me a simple, clean stock-like custom ROM without unnecessary programs and things installed. The primary reason for me wanting to flash to a custom ROM is for the considerable performance gain I keep reading about.
I have an Australian-bought unbranded HTC Touch Pro (raph100).
Thanks in advance,
Tim

Tim,
Since this will be closed very quickly by mods....read in this section for a lite roms...the cooks put in the heading if they make lite Roms. Click on the rom and read the first few pages and it will tell you what is included in it...some examples are Da G and NATF's. No one knows what "unnecessary programs and things installed" is because it is different for each person.
I would go with this one. Actually, I am. It has ZERO bloatware in it and is very fast.

I use the Optus stock ROM w/ 1.08.25.20M1 Radio. It's fantastic...

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The Optus stock ROM is actually the one that came with my device originally since this is an Australian TP. If you don't think that any considerable performance gain can be had by installing a cooked ROM then I may as well stick with this. Thanks anyway
Tim
(PS. I'm new here, so I don't quite understand why this thread will be quickly closed by mods... sorry
You can flash any rom you want since most don't include a radio.
I use Da_G's Roms because they don't include ANYTHING. The ROM is a very basic WM6.1 rom with all of the latest drivers for the best performance. All programs outside of the standard windows apps are separate downloads which can be installed as you see fit.
This is nice because you get to see what a BASIC Windows Mobile environment is and what the phone runs like without all the extra HTC extras. It also gives a very good starting point to customize the phone the way YOU want.
The good thing is that because YOU install all the extras manually... you can also uninstall them in the event a newer version comes out.
There are other good ROMs too... but most come with a "standard" set of programs, most of which I don't ever use or want. I like Da_G's because I can be in control of what is on my phone.
My 2 cents.

so? new or not, it would make sense to read the wiki first. i think they even put sometihng in to tell u to read the wiki after signing up (though i'm not 100% about that), but either way, you should try doign some reading before posting. it can seem liek a lot to read, but if u want to make improvements to ur phoen, then take some time to invest in it.
Hi All,
I am new to this forum and also to this Smartphone world
I am planning to buy Galaxy S2 , but want to use ICS Stock UI ( I can wait for official ICS update or use some ICS ROM ) , but what I want to know is that how can I use default ICS Stock UI on my Galaxy S2.
And another question when we use unofficial ROM on our Android phone , what are the risks we should consider in terms of our personal data security and also the stability of our phone ?
Thanks,
Maverick

If you do some reading around the SGS2 forum, you'll find all of the information you seek. Or you could try google...either way, the powers that be here at XDA aren't very friendly to those who don't bother trying to research, read, or use the search function. I'm trying to be a bit more personable.
At the moment, ICS is in either the Alpha or Beta stage...meaning that it's still buggy and doesn't really function as a daily driver yet.
To get ICS right now, you have to flash a ROM...which involves root access. The risks are pretty high. You have the risk of bricking your phone, if you don't read the instructions and follow them exactly, which isn't always easy because you're not very likely to find exact instructions for your specific phone (the hardware specs will match, but the ROM/Radio/Modem numbers may be different which can lead to confusion). You also run the risk of voiding your warranty, which is a pretty significant one.
I flashed an ICS build yesterday, and then my S2 wouldn't charge. I eventually flashed back (thank God I had made a backup yesterday, and 2 days ago as the one from yesterday didn't work!)
As far as security goes, nothing really to worry about. Dev's don't build in Carrier IQ and don't really want your personal data. But the flip side is, that they don't get paid for what they do...so if you have a problem or 'eff something up, you're pretty much on your own. You can ask for help, but again, sometimes the dev's don't want to be bothered with a question if it's already been answered or if you could've found the answer by searching for it. This is where it gets rude, sometimes.
That's the long answer. The short answer is READ, READ, READ...everything about your phone and flashing ROM's. Start at the beginning of the forum, as that's where the 'stickies' are and work your way thru. ICS will be released officially and stably later.
Hope that helps.
Thanks ,
I have googled it and read some threads on this forum and on others as well... thats how I came to know that you can root your phone with unofficial ICS ROM... but wasn't sure that in that case , will I get ICS with TouchWiz or Stock UI...
And 2nd thing that if I screwed up what will happen to my personal data...
anyhow thanks for replying my (dumb ? ) question
Hi,
Ive had my Galaxy S3 for about 4 months now, and being in Australia waiting for the Jelly Bean update is driving me crazy, So i wanted to know how hard it would be to root my S3, I would have done it as soon as i got the phone however, My first galaxy stopped working after putting a new rom on the phone and my galaxy s2's screen turned blue and then died, although this could have been because i dropped it the day before, not sure both of these have kind of put me off rooting, however ive had a xoom and optimus 3d that are still fine on custom roms.
Also, If i wanted to return to stock, and unroot the phone, would that restore my warranty?
I have the International Galaxy S3, I think With Optus in Australia,
I would have searched how to root by myself, but i really dont want to brick the phone.
So if someone could link me to a stable rom and some instructions on how to root it would be fantastic
Thanks for reading
4 months..... I couldn't even wait for a day after received my S3
Even with custom ICS ROM you ll see huge difference
Hehhe I don't really care about warranty anymore after I chose to root
As long I enjoy the phone... But there's a way to do that...
I can't help you to find the link for rooting and apply CWM since I haven't been to any threads
If I were you, go search root by CF....
Good luck

Hi, Thanks for the reply,
I am going to follow this guide, Its from another website so my apologies if i am not allowed to post links to external sites, Although i found the link on an XDA thread so i figured it would be okay
http://www.androidrootz.com/2012/09/how-to-root-any-samsung-galaxy-s3.html
And im just looking at ROM's now, Just out of curiosity which ROM are you using androbot?
Thanks
I would always root my phone Just because you can use AD Block
Haha yeah i will look forward to that , Just Root'd phone then Tested with Titanium backup and works fine Just wondering if any of you could recommend a good ROM, or the ROM your currently using that your really happy with? Thanks
I'm using crDroid 6.3 at the moment...
I like ROM doesn't get stripped but still performs fast and fluid too...
Each user has their own taste....
The ROM is around 9xx mb...
It's got AROMA installer too....
After you root and install CWM, crDroid ROM requires touch recovery to avoid any problem...so you need to flash touch recovery recommended ...

I gave stock a try for a while.... Lasted 3 days. Samsung managed to create something that can't run on a quad core phone.... That's almost something to be proud of, I shouldn't experience lag and homescreen redraws on a $500+ phone. Installing a custom rom is a must for me, I don't understand why OEM version of Android are so horrible but they are. Rooting only will give you a few benefits and extra things you can tweak as well as ad blocking and making the GPS faster. But if you really want a change, custom roms are the way to go.
Hey guys new to android based phones, ive had the s3 for a few months and have read the forum for a while, i want to flash a custom rom and read about imei backup which i just did but i want to know is it common for the imei to delete when flashing?
I lasted about 3 weeks on stock.. now dual booting CM10 & UltraROM. You won't regret it :good:
Should I root??
Sorry for posting here but it's the closest I have found to what my question is. I have an AT&T S3. I would like to root to get rid of my bloatware but I'm a chicken. I rooted my HTC Inspire over a year ago and I didn't really know how to remove to AT&T apps and the stock rom was not as snappy as it was prior to rooting. I planned on staying on ICS until an official JB OTA was available, as I've never flashed custom roms before. What I'm most concerned about I guess is whether rooting will mess up my 4gLTE and wifi. I rely heavily on wifi since sadly, AT&T is lame, expensive, and doesn't offer unlimited data. So I want to make sure I don't screw up wifi if I do this. Can anyone provide insight or point me to a good resource that can help?? Thanks a bunch in advance and sorry for the noob questions.

Using Odin to flash CF-Root is super-easy, so don't be afraid. Rooting will not affect your phone's smoothness, but if you use it to remove apps with Titanium Backup without making sure they are not useless, you may end up having performance issues or worse. Of course, I'm not saying you shouldn't root, just that after rooting, take care with what you remove via TB.
CF-Root can be found in the Original Android Development forum, follow the instructions and you'll be ok.
All three mobile networks are releasing them this month, November! Telstra, Voda then Optus.
Hopefully it's XXDLJ4 or above or XXDLJ6 etc

-Flashing to think of it in basic terms is pretty much 'installing'. So when someone is flashing a rom/kernel, they are installing it.
-For a kernel, it is responsible for dealing with all the process that your phone does (someone could give a better explanation)
-Stock kernels are the kernel that comes with either your stock or orignal rom and also most roms these days have there own kernel. So stock is well the orignal.
-The bootloader is the first thing that runs when you boot your phone and is responsible for loading the OS.
-Custom roms are roms that arent your orignal manufacturers rom, so popular ones for the i9300 are ones such as Cyanogenmod, paranoid android, aokp (android open kang project), carbon rom etc..
-Archi kernel is a custom kernel made by the wonderful @JustArchi
-KNOX is samsungs security so they when you root or modify your phone from stock and trip Knox, Samsung can tell. (Will probably prevent them from helping you if something goes wrong seeing as you modified your phone)
-AOSP is android open source project
Hope I helped you with your queries and welcome to xda, enjoy
P.s if anything needs adding to my response other xda members just add it
Thanks! and Additional Query.

I agree with the above post, do that. It really does depend on how you use your phone on a daily basis etc. some people play heavy games and thus their battery would drain quicker than say someone like me who uses their phone not too much during the day. Mine has lasted 1d 3h 2m (curently 38%) because i only check my internet apps every so often and my phone is usualy in UPSM (ultra power saving mode). My screen on time is 1h 42m just to show you how much i use it.
If you want good battery life on your s3, i recommend getting the zerolemon 7000mAh external battery - http://zerolemon.com/product/zerole...hout-nfc-black-tpu-full-edge-protection-case/
Thanks! Additional Info

Hi,
I decided to Root my device due to this Battery Drain issue. Can give some suggestions about ROMs as my main concern is about Battery Life.
I know in this forum, it is not allowed to ask questions about " which is the Best ROM / Best Kernel for this , for that". I am not doing that.
Since I don't have have any knowledge in this, just only asking about some suggestions/help.
Please consider this in that case!
My phone usage are mostly for :
- Whatsapp and other Social netwok chats.
- Seldom play games.
- Install Selected Apps only
- Internet Browsing
- Watch movies/videos (offline; downloaded via Computer)
I have installed some apps similar to BATTERY SAVER/DOCTOR but couldn't find much difference in using that.
Thanks and Regards,

I told you in the above post changing the rom will not change the battery life. Do not believe anything that tells you other wise. Stock and asop roms are so close now it doesn't matter.
What will drain it is your use and wakelocks preventing it from going to sleep. The apps you use and the way you use it is different from everybody else. What I get good battery life on you may not. @Grimzee could get good life on one that you and I don't, so choosing a rom based on battery life is a bad idea and a bad move.
Try these instructions first.

Yeah sure no problem, i can help with that.
The volume up button is used to manually boot into recovery mode (holding home + power + volume up). There are other ways to boot into recovery, say for example rom manager from the play store (provided you have clockworkmod installed (the custom recovery i mentioned earlier)). But if something goes wrong in the process of flashing anything and your phone gets stuck in a bootloop, then you will need to use odin on windows to fix it. If there are any issues you come across, there are plenty of people ready to help you on XDA.
Regarding ROM choice, everything @Darke5tShad0w said is what you should follow. To put it simply, ROMs, Kernels, Custom recoveries are ALL personal decisions. You can try what you like.
Hello everyone.
I have an international version of S3 (I9300) and it works pretty well (the only thing that annoys me is that sometimes when i swipe left or right, the background of pages when on middle is some random, usually non-transparent image, but i just reboot it and it's fine), but i really like android kitkat and would like to install it on my I9300. I searched through various web sites and videos (also here on some threads) and i saw a lot of ROMs for "S3 kitkat" and i can't decide on my own which one is the best. If anyone could help me choose the best S3 kitkat ROM i would be veryveryvery thankful!
PS the first one i saw is cyanogen mod and i think that that one is probably the one i should install, but it's just an idea (aaand when i say the best ROM, i mean the one that could give me the most and the best of my I9300 (pretty obvious i think, but oh well...)) also i saw on sammobile.com an article about South Korean version S3 getting kitkat and when i saw one of comments it gave me some hope for not needing any custom ROM (i would probably be the happiest person if they would relase an official kitkat for I9300 or if it would be possible to take kitkat for some other S3 versions and install on I9300) and the comments go like this:

(i'm not that much into ROM stuff and had never installed any custom ROMs, just rooted, unrooted and did binary counter reset once, so please forgive me if i said something stupid or nonesense)
It's no nonsense, but a version of 'what's the best rom', which is against the rules (avoiding endless threads about personal preferences).
Choose the roms with the most and actual posts here, read them and decide. All of them, AOSP- or TW-based, will have some minor bugs. Test it and enjoy.
