[Q] unnecessary cache? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So after having updated my n4 through all versions from 4.4 to 5.1 i have realised that everytime i clear my cache using TWRP i gain 1+ GB of free storage, but during the first boot, ~140 apps get "optimised" and my 1+ gig of cache is back? Why is this necessary? If i install a 5.1 factory image, wiping my device clean, and reinstall all my apps (including xposed and so on), would there still be this much cache that would rebuild itself on boot after deleting it? It just does not make any sense to me.
I'm just interested in the background... Ok well maybe im gonna do the wipe thing, as i have about 500mb of space left and 1Gb or even more (i think it's changing between 1.2 an 1.4, depending on how much apps i have insalled, duh) would really help.
Thanks in advance

Wiping before flashing custom ROMs

Hello,
I rooted my eris about a month ago and have flashed about every rom thats been on grdlock's site. But one thing I've never been quite clear on is the whole wipe process. Can someone explain the difference between the factory wipe and the dalvik wipe? For instance why should i do one or the other or both before flashing a new custom rom?

Can anybody help??
The factory wipe cleans the phones OS out, the dalvik wipe clears the cache. You don't need to know exactly what they do to know they definitely make ROMs run much cleaner when you do it, because I really dont know the specifics. I don't know how commands are programmed into DOS but I still know that the commands work...if that metaphor makes any sense.
PS - you should definitely do both before flashing a new ROM or restoring a nandroid backup
thanks taco. that helps a ton.

Sorry to let you down my friend.
factory wipe is like formating your harddrive on your computer before installing a new OS.
dalvik is a way to run multiple virtual machines where parts of the applications your running on android also run during normal operation to minimize memory and cpu usage, the cache obviously plays a part in memory usage, clearing this is like rebooting the ram on your computer to run faster.
in summary: format both and google your questions before asking them.
thanks guys. and trust me i did search all over for this but couldnt find a definitive answer. i just wanted to know for myself exactly what each "wipe-type" does, but i'll just stick with using both before i flash a new rom unless the dev instructs otherwise.

Factory wipe is not wiping the os
...factory is like restoring the os, to how it came when you first got your computer, deleting all your programs, personal files, and stuff, that you added over the life of your computer.
You got cache down though.
Hope that makes it a little more clear.

Hey guys,
So I'm planning to flash the ROM at this URL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131217 but it requires that I "wipe" first. My rank says it all--I'm new to this stuff.
So, to the question; What should I wipe, and any tips on flashing this ROM?
Thanks,

Well, Its for a different phone, so I would say no.
First of all, Linux has a few different folders. /data is used to install all your apps and stuff, but /system is for the 0S and stuff. The /system section is restricted unless you gain root access. Anyways, /system isn't removed via factory reset, just /data. Installing a new rom, /system has files usually overwritten.... Hope that helps a little. The other folders are for cleaning up what's ever left over.

[Q] What kind of system maintenance does Android require?

Is there a kind of system maintenance routine necessary (or beneficial) to keep Android running in top condition? I've seen that permissions can be repaired via CWMod and Dalvik cache, etc, but what else should we do to maintain the system performance and stability, etc.?
well, idk if this helps, but tmobile told me to clear the user data every 2 months or so...
User data holds what?
I'm not sure I trust the "expertise" of a T-Mobile rep, but thanks for the response.
I've had one instance where the system told me that my DB data was getting too full and asked me to purge it manually. I removed some stuff and then I noticed that the DB data went down in Titanium Backup, but I don't know what that does either, or how to keep it cleaned out.
If you are plain stock not rooted, delete cache data as the previous poster said. There is not an specific amount of time for this, but if you feel your phone starts too lag more than usual
If you are rooted, and have CWM installed wipe cache partition, and in Advanced do Wipe Dalvik cache, nad if you want wipe battery stats (Do this when your battery is full once in a while so yo get better battery reads)
I need to clear out the directories for apps from my internal SD card periodically. As I install and uninstall apps I get a bunch of directories on there that I don't need. I also like to reboot every few days to a week when my phone gets laggy.

[Q] Maximum speed out of my device? worth it?

Hey XDA!
I tried looking up a little bit in regards needing to do a factory wipe/clearing my cache for maximum speed/newness. I flashed my first roms for the first time on sunday and I went back to 4.0.4 but then suddenly the official version of 4.1 came out and I updated to it without having to factory clear and wiping my cache it just worked perfectly. All my contacts/messages and apps were there.
Now, I'm a person who tries to juice out every bit of power I got and I'm wondering if I really need to clear cache/factory wipe to get the most speed out of my new 4.1, keep in mind I just factory cleared it less than 24 hours ago and just added 16 of my usual apps.
any responses would be appreciated!
(I also have titanium backup pro to restore all this stuff on a new ROM but I don't think it'll work without having an SD card cause it'll just wipe off my internal storage after I factory wipe, and uploading to dropbox takes forever with my down/up)
Thanks so much!

yes you really need to wipe cache /dalvik and data(factory) when coming from a totally different version of android , a format of the system would be a good choice to, even if an update from a rom for eg checkrom v4 ics to v5 ics when no wipe needed its always better to full wipe and restore etc it really takes no time .. and as you have come from ics to jb then get wiping after you backed up and start from scratch

[Q] HELP: Trouble with Dalvik on Ray running stock 4.0.4 SOLVED

Hello good people of the xda forums,
I'm having trouble with the Dalvik on my Ray running stock 4.0.4 (587). I recently updated from GB to ICS. I did not wipe anything, as I was in no mood re-set and re-install all my settings and apps. (Did this numerous times before, and my GB installation was running as smooth as an Android's butt (haha)). After flashing 4.0.4 I flashed the older 4.0.3 (562) Kernel, rooted, and re-flashed the 4.0.4 Kernel. All went well. I just had to reinstall some apps that wouldn't load via Titanium Backup. Now everything is fine.
Except for the fact that upon each and every reboot, the system re-initializes all Apps in the Dalvik cache, as if the cache had been wiped. Note: before I updated to ICS, I had moved my system Dalvik to the system partition as I was running low on internal memory. Now, my system Dalvik is back in the user partition, but for some strange fact I have even more free memory than before with GB.
Anyway, everything runs fine once the system is done booting. But it's a bit annoying that the system is re-initializing the Dalvik during each reboot. Does anyone have any idea as to why this could be, and what I could do about it?
Thanks!
Whatever ... the problem seems to have fixed itself. ICS 4.0.4 is now running as smooth as GB 2.3 did before. It still baffles me though that even though the complete Dalvik is in the user partition, I still have more free memory than before ...
Then, write a [SOLVED]-Tag behind the title! :good:
Good luck! :fingers-crossed:

[Q] Insufficient storage available - how?

My friends,
I have a weird problem with installing some apps and I have tried so hard to fix this, but nothing have worked. This is not a problem with dalvik cache or some other cache, I have enough space in every partition, reflashing from start (with wiping and everything) did not resolve my problem.
The best thing is that I have installed some apps that are over 50mb, but e.g. Readability with is ~7mb cannot be installed, even though I have apps that have exactly same size.
What can it be? What can prevent me from installing some apps, even I have fresh ROM, full space and cleared every cache? I am using latest MIUI v5 ROM - Android 4.1.2 (before flashing it I had older version, which did not work too). I do not think it is because of ROM, it must be something else.
Have anyone had this problem? Please help me, my friends.
