[Q] full android backup? :s - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'd like to completely backup my n4 running 5.1 (rooted and xposed installed), so i can try some things with it and not be worried about any kind of data loss. The thing is, ive tried the nexus root toolkit by wugfresh and the skipsoft android toolkit, but neither of those COMPLETELY backup my apps , app data and shared storage, it does not matter what i use, something is always missing. For example, i made a "full Android backup", the one with the .ab extension, but its only about 8 Gb in size, and my phone says i have 500mb out free out of 12.9 total, so that makes absolutely no sense to me, as that is over 30% missing and not a full backup at all. a nandroid backup using twrp i not really an option as i have only those 500megs of free space and the nandroid backup wants to back up the data to my phone first and then copy it to my pc.
What can i do? are there any solutions that will literally bring my entire phone back to the state it was before? (recovery cache and kernel dont HAVE to be incuded, that i can reinstall myself)

You can try using an online Nandroid backup.

Copy your internal storage to a PC. Make some room on the phone by deleting enough stuff for a nandroid backup. Copy backup to PC. Mod away. When finished and all is well, return data back to the phone's internal storage.
You should also be able to use USB OTG in TWRP and make a backup to external storage as well.

When you flash a new ROM

having backup-ed everything with Titanium, do you need to move the Titanium backup to your computer so it wont be wiped?
Could you move it to your it to your External SD?
Secular
Always make a copy for your computer just in case it wipes. You could also put a copy in external but some roms are having an issue seeing external.
I've been keeping copies of the TB folder on my computer. I have a version I took after rooting the stock ROM, and one from every ROM I've put on since. I probably don't need that, but I usually do a full back of all system apps as well and that changes from ROM to ROM, so I hate seeing all the old backups for stuff I no longer can apply to the current ROM.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
its ALWAYS a good idea to backup your sd cards to PC just in case of an accidental wipe....when i flashed the new Onyx 4.2 ROM it wiped my internal sd....pics...ringtones....apps....nandroids......GONE because i didnt read the small print that said the kernal may wipe...so back up everything....better safe than sorry

ClockWorkMod image loaction

I'm trying to create an image of my device, but the memory of the device is way more than half full.
Since ClockWorkMod is trying to backup to the DEVICE memory, and not the SD card memory, it obviously doesn't have enough room to do so.
How can I change the location of where it does the backup?
I'm using ClockWorkMod recovery v4.0.1.5 with CF root, and I'm quite a newbie when it comes to ROM changing and everything, never done that.
Thanks
In the backup/restore settings in CWRecovery, you should have the option to backup to internal/external storage. Choose external if you don't have enough space in internal.

I do not see any "settings" in the backup/restore.
Also - I cleared about 700MB from my device memory, leaving it with 10GB used space and 2GB free, and it seems like it did a backup which its size is about 2GB leaving me with about 100 free MB. How does it make sense? doesn't it backup the data like images and videos?
Will still prefer to try and backup to SD.
Thanks
CWM will make an 'image' of the phone at the time you make the backup minus the modem & external SD card (if you have one). If you have photos/videos/whatever stored in the usual place on the internal storage these will be backed up. That backup size is normal.
Do you have an external/separate SD card, or are you talking about the two separate parts of the internal storage; you have the part that's used by the 'system'; & the 'userspace' which is normally referred to as 'sdcard' ? If you are using an external/separate SD card, there's definitely an option in the backup & restore settings to backup to external SD card (I'm looking at that menu right now).
I have a feeling the version of CWM you're using may have something to do with you not having these options; 4x is ancient, I don't even remember what options are in the menus of that; we're now using 6x.
Perhaps you might want to use a kernel that has a more recent version of CWM if that's the case & it's not allowing you do what you want ?

I did mean the external storage, yes.
I tried to update to 6x but it stayed the same version.
Anyway, if you're sure it makes sense that 10GB became 2GB after backup, then I'll trust that and will use the backup it created in the internal storage.
What I meant was, you said the backup size was ~2GB; that is indeed normal. If you attempt to update CWM independently of the kernel, you will revert to whatever version is baked into the kernel when you next reboot. If you want to update to a permanent later version of CWM, you'll need to flash a kernel that has said version of CWM.
if you're on PhilZ kernel, you can choose to compress the backup file. (low, medium or high compression)
You can also get a smaller file size, by uninstalling apps you certainly dont need. You can clear off cache files.
For cleanup i recommend Clean Master - search playstore

root question

do i need to save my rooted stock rom backup on an xternal sd card before i install a new rom like viper that wipes everything or is it safe to save on internal storage
Slightly tricky question. Flashing a ROM is not supposed to wipe internal memory. For the large part, it isn't going to happen.
That being said, I tend to back up lots of things on my computer before flashing any ROMs (alternately you can use cloud services) due to the fact that on my old phone (One X EVITA) where was some bug which randomly wiped/corrupted files on the internal storage. It didn't happen all the time, and it seemed to happen less and less as time went on (updates to TWRP?). But it happened to me at least a couple times. Enough to make me back up anything not replaceable (photos in particular), as well as "emergency" copies of nandroids and Titanium data to my computer before almost any flash.
Also, I know that some builds of TWRP even wiped the removable SD. So even that is not guaranteed to be untouched when flashing. Don't know if Philz CWM has reports of any such issues.
Moral of the story: Nandroids should be fine on the internal storage. But never a bad idea to back up to other locations (even a computer) "just in case". Same goes with any other important personal data (photos, etc.). If it will upset you to lose it, back it up.
How can I back it up to my computer or to cloud storage

To backup any files on your phone to computer, simply connect the phone to your computer by USB. Navigate to the desired folder or files, and simply copy and paste to your computer.
Cloud solution, it depends on what solution you pick (Google Drive, Dropbox, Mega, too many others to even list). For instance, Dropbox will prompt you when you first start the phone app if you want to backup your photos. You can then also backup any other phone files to your Dropbox.

.

is it possible to...

backup app data of the xperia z2 (mainly game apps) without root?
sister wants to root her z2, but it's on 5.1.1, so phone obviously needs to be downgraded.
i've turned on backup & restore in settings & accounts sync automatically... i've also backed up to sony pc companion, though i'm not sure if it backs up the game data.
i know some games back up to game servers/google play games, not sure about some. if i move apps to sd card, will the data be stored there as well?
edit: could someone tell me if this is still the most used method of rooting?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/development/stock-d6502-03-23-4-0-546-completeguide-t3171219 using 17.1.2.A.0.314 going to 23.4.A.1.232
You need ROOT, unfortunately, try ESfile Explorer, it can backup apk files
Edit: install recovery and do a factory reset it only deletes apps and it's data, internal storage will be untouched, then through recovery flash a pre-rooted zip
If you want anything i could try to help
game data are not stored in the cloud. There's no way to back up your game data. Downgrade will wipe your internal storage.
Try Backup&Restore app to backup data to sd card. However, she can only restore it after she get back to 5.1.1.
So she needs to downgrade then root then upgrade thru recovery for rooted 5.1.1 then restore using Backup&Restore.
well, i havent tried this so im not really sure if this will work.

twrp (2017 version 18) Restore - files visible only in file manager (Galaxy Note II)

Not my first root and custom ROM install but first one in 4 years. Much has changed...
So, I installed TWRP backed up and installed Nougat. Now I'm trying to revert back to my original system but twrp shows only storage media Internal/external with small sizes and no content. However, in twrp file manager I can see all the folders and files in both internal and external sd card.
I had made a full backup of original Android 4.4.2 (~6GB) with latest twrp (18) that I stored on my external sd card (see screenshot, I hope everything is there!).
What do I need to do to be able to see the relevant file(s) for restoring?
I also have adb installed and it sees my Note II alright but I have no idea how I can use it to make twrp see and restore to my previous state.
If you can help please bear in mind that I'm not very familiar with most of the current developers stuff. Thanks.
If there's a problem with restoring from what I have, I would do a factory reset as I have also saved my most important files separately. I am reluctant though as I have read too much about bricking the phone doing that. Pointers?
Do I have a valid twrp backup in the first place?
This is the page whose instructions I followed. https://www.androidexplained.com/move-twrp-backup/
I backed up directly to external sdcard where a twrp folder with subfolder backups was created. I never had a path with media/0 something that I see people talking about to restore from.
Can somebody please confirm that I have a full backup according to the screenshot I did?
Ah well, live and learn. Just to say that I'm not the only with this problem and it's not phone related either. People with this problem post all over the net! However, iIt looks as though there is no real solution. I would have expected to have a full restore when I hit the backup button in TWRP! This is total BS!
I NEVER had any probs with CWM in the past and I tried a lot of Custom ROMs. It's a pity it's discontinued.
TWRP for your phone doesn't support restoring from external SD cards? That would be odd. I've always found TWRP to be vastly superior to CWM and have installed it on dozens of phones. Why not just move the subfolders to the TWRP folder on the internal storage? The main cause of this isn't the recovery as much as Samsung incorrectly namied the different partitions vs the way Google and custom roms based off of AOSP / CM / etc.
OK, I did the following: took another external SD card and formatted it in the phone. Did another backup with twrp. Uploaded my first backup into the same folder on SD card. Booted into twrp, wiped, and voilá, I found backup folder.
Was able to restore and it looked ok BUT! after seconds the apps one by one started stopping. Now I am in a bootloop with all the apps stopping. I can't get to anywhere.
So much for a "smooth" TWRP backup.
ETA: Finally, I also wiped internal storage and am back to factory settings. Thank god I had the sense to save important folders separately. It's really really important to chose more than one way to backup your files (I also did a myphone explorer backup before the twrp one).
