Is there any way, even with rooting or a ROM, to disable this stupid GPS notification?
I completely understand that it's trying to tell me that an application is occasionally using the GPS in the background, but it's irritating and unnecessary. I don't care that something is using the GPS. I'm fine with it. Stop telling me every few minutes.
My last two devices were Nexus phones and they don't bother popping up a notification unless an application is attempting to maintain a continuous GPS lock. That makes way more sense.
So is there a ROM that offers the ability to turn off these GPS notifications? Or some method of disabling the notification that doesn't involve stopping the applications from using GPS.
did you ever find the answer?

I've read a number of sources talk about how enabling the GPS pulls a lot from the battery unnecessarily.
But on the Atrix, when I'm not in an app that uses it (such as Google Maps), the icon dissappears from the taskbar. Does this mean that the Atrix doesn't suffer from this problem?
Or is the GPS always on when you have it enabled?
Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but most of my phones have been this way. If you have the GPS it stays on, even when not used. The icon appears when an app is using your location and disappears when not in use.
That seems like such an obvious bit of poor programming and design. It makes no sense.
Well, if it's confirmed that this is how it works, I guess I should be using Tasker to fix that...
In 2.1 there was no warning when enabling GPS, but now it is. And for that reason all widgets that enable GPS lost functionality because, that action cannot be done with one click. Is any way to bypass or disable that warning?
if i am not mistaken this issue started with GB.. not only it renders all widgets and toggle into less useful thing to have in our phone, it also renders some anti-theft apps that requires automatic activation of gps radio to work.
I dont know when is started, but I know that is very bad "feature" and hope someone will find way to fix or bypass. If we can root device I am sure there is way to disable this warning.
I just leave it on all the time.
As long as no app is using it there is no battery-drain afaik.
Hello all!
Since yesterday, when I updated the firmware of my phone, the GPS icon has been shown constantly in the notification bar. It did not use to happen before. I am afraid it might be draining more battery than needed but I don't want to turn off GPS completely as I wanted it to be "ready to use" whenever I need to use, for example, Google Maps.
Is there something I can do? How can I control which app's might be using GPS connection in every moment?
Thank you!
+1
Every once in a while I see the GPS icon light up for a couple of seconds without apparent reason. I have no auto geo locating widget or so running, which might be an obvious guess.
Edit: just noticed I had weather information enabled on the lock screen so that may be the cause.
Recently my phone has been randomly, though not often, pinging my GPS location. I'm sure an update of some kind started it but I am not sure what triggered it. Is there a way to track what application is/applications are asking for a GPS location? It's very random. No pattern (like not every time I launch an app or wake the phone- it'll just happen periodically- might be texting or reading twitter, etc.).
Hello,
I recently noticed that when my GPS is activated, and I write a text (new or replying) the GPS icon in the notification bar will start flashing. I know enough from other programs, like Maps and such, that the flashing means it is trying to get location. At the time this happens, I am not (actively) using any apps that require GPS. Usually I'll turn off GPS when I see this.
My question is, why on earth is my phone trying to get location when I'm writing a text message? How do I figure out what app is triggering it?
I've owned this phone for a year, and have not rooted. I am using the native texting app.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Try turning it off, I had this issue with my stock ROM, where GPS would turn on automatically, if I turn it off, it would turn back on in 5-10 seconds.

Thank you. If the GPS is off before I text, then the Icon does not flash.
If GPS is on before I text, then it flashes.
I haven't seen the GPS (as a whole) turn on by it's self like you mentioned.
Thank you
